WRT54GL - two xboxes - moderates nat... sometimes

Modem: RCA DHG525
Router: WRT54GL
ISP: Cogeco (Ontario Canada)
I have two xboxes connected to my router (wired).  Both xboxes have unique static IPs.  xbox1 is in the DMZ.  xbox2 has ports 53, 80 and 3074 forwarded for TCP and UDP.  Block Anonymous WAN Requests is disabled.  MTU is set to auto.  uPnP is disabled.
I just ran the connection test on xbox2 and got an open nat.  I left xbox2 on but signed out of live.  I went to xbox1 and ran the connection test and received a moderate nat.
I powered off both xboxs and reran the connection tests with only one xbox powered on at a time.  Both xbox1 and xbox2 report moderate nat.
After having both xboxes powered off for a while I ran the connection test on xbox2 again and the nat is open.  I powered off xbox2 and ran the connection test on xbox1 and again the nat is moderate.
Again I left both xboxes powered off for a while and ran the connection test on xbox1 first.  The nat is moderate.  I powered off xbox1 and ran the test on xbox2 and the nat is open.  I've run the test on xbox1 before and received an open nat though.
Is this a timing thing?  Is something released if the xboxes are both powered off long enough?
Is there a way I can get both xboxes to have an open nat consistantly?  I don't need to have them both online at the same time.  I'd just like to have an open nat whether I'm playing on xbox1 or xbox2.
Thanks,
imcndn
Solved!
Go to Solution.

ok... I tried that out:
Set MTU to 1364
enabled uPnP
disabled port forwarding
disabled dmz
enabled port triggering:
53 TCP
80 TPC
3074 TCP
53 UDP
88 UDP
3074 UDP
Both xboxes powered on:
xbox2 has an open nat
xbox1 has an open nat
That did it... thanks for all the help!  Awesome support from the forums!

  • Moderate Nat On PS4 & Xbox One

    Hello There!
As the title says my PS4 and Xbox One Are both Having Moderate Nat Problems And Im Pulling My Hair Out, Any Help ?

    G33MAN wrote:
Yeah but did you do the multiplayer test and then hold all the bumper buttons and the two triggers ? It works just google xboxx one wireless issues and one of the very first links is by MS telling people to do this to open the nat.
Yes but this is only temporary.
As soon as you restart even in energy saving mode the nat goes moderate again.
I am using wired as well so the problem isn't just with wireless.
I think the xbox one has major UPnP bugs that makes it incompatible with the bthomehubs.
The only NAT I can get to stay open is call of duty ghosts. Thats through port forwarding port 3075.
But the xbox one dashboard is having problems even though I port forwarded port 3074.
I think the problem is that the home hub overwrites this port forward rule whenever I switch on my xbox 360 as the xbox 360 opens port 3074 by UPnP. I still get open NAT on the 360 suggesting the home hub has allowed the 360 to steal port 3074 which is when I start getting the nat problems on xbox one.
Oh and can someone with a bit of knowledge explain what this cone NAT is and whether it is a problem?

  • WRT160N V2 - Connecting TWO Xbox 360's with OPEN NAT...a nightmare. :(

Need to run two Xbox 360's on a WRT160N V2 both with open NAT.
    This must be possible...somehow.
I've tried a few times through the linksys support chat (which seems to be gone now?) to get this working properly but always fails. I've got my http://192.168.1.1/ open, so please if anyone knows how this works that'd be just awesome.
Both 360's are connected via wire. We want to be able to play the same games at the same time in the same party while both having an open NAT. Right now only one of us can have an open NAT while the other has a Moderate or Strict. We have plenty of speed, but that stupid NAT makes it nearly impossible for us to connect to games together. Then even when we DO connect to a server/lobby it takes forever for that lobby to fill up with other players as they can't connect to US. Painfully annoying.
I DID do a search of this very forum and found a thread or two, but they are very long and I am having a hard time filtering what is correct or not. Too many people saying different things with no reponses as to whether or not their solution worked. I'm still reading through them, I'm not a technician in any sense and don't want to mess it up more than it already seems to be. I am capable of reading/following instructions, so if anyone knows I'll give you all my "One Free Internet" coupons.

You can try this link and it will help you in setting up your XBOX with your Router. And for your 2nd XBOX Enable DMZ and assign a Static IP to your XBOX.

  • Time Capsule, hardwired to TWO xbox 360's, and NAT issues.

    Hello All,
I currently have an older Linksys WRT54G (version 1.0 LOL) which has been working fine for years. I recently bought my son an XBOX 360 for Christmas and we went through the issues of NAT and Call of Duty, and basically I have become quite knowledgeable on this topic. I recently added a SECOND XBOX 360, as it became apparent that one would not do with three boys in the house (Plus COD is a blast on line).
So I created a second Live Account and got the two xbox's running online stably with NAT wide open on both. This required abandoning the Linksys Firmware and installing "Tomato" on the WRT54G. That works GREAT. No modifications were required for the rest of the network including...
Macbook by Wifi, Minimac Hardwired (ya ya wifi works but hardwire is better), Airport Express (used only to stream music to stereo in family room - from ANY PC/MAC running Itunes...Itunes is VERY NICE), HP printer with network adapter, 5 other PC's including a mix of VISTA, XP, XP Pro, and multiple IPHONES, A Palm Tungsten C, WII, DS and of course the two hard wired XBOXs. NO Problems. The Tomato configuration only required the modifications for the XBOXs specifically as the rest of the network settings were not change after the firmware update.
What am I interested in? I'd like to upgrade to a Time Capsule for several reasons. One Newer wifi, faster, two frequencies, backup space for growing Mac branch of our network, and as the internet sharing router. AND to be able to access the TC from the internet for file access anywhere! LOVE THAT FEATURE. This requires the TC to be the first device after the cable modem as far as I can tell at this point. (any input on this specific feature would be great).
So I want to configure the TC with the input from the Cable modem as the main distribution of the internet. Then from the other NETWORK ports connect to my 20 port router for the rest of the house, as well as to the other items currently connected at the site of the current LinkSys Router (Mac Mini, Sony TV).
Also I need to maintain the current XBOX set up with (as well as Wii) with full open NAT on both XBOXs.
My question: Anyone here currently using the TC for hardwired connectivity for an XBOX with XBOX live running with open NAT for TWO XBOXs?
The issues with NAT and TWO XBOXs is that you cannot simply use PORT FORWARDing or PORT Triggering to make sure that the traffic goes to the correct xbox. The XBOX uses specific communication ports and the ROUTER needs to keep the traffic flowing properly or you get disconnected or never get open NAT (must have for XBOX live and internet gaming). There are many write ups on using Port Forwarding for one XBOX and setting the second one in the DMZ, but this does not work all the time.
The "Tomato" firmware on the LINKSYS allows fooling the router into giving a 'pseudo static' ip address to the XBOX's by doing MAC address based reservation of an IP number and then letting the DHCP give the xbox an IP address. The MAC address based reservation makes sure that the XBOX always gets the same IP address which for some GD reason must be in order for the traffic to be routed to the correct device. (you can of course use the same MAC address reservation for any device on the network).
Second Question: For those using the TC AND a second WiFi Router to do WIRELESS connection to the XBOX - which device do you have configured as the main INTERNET sharing router? I have read hear what appears to state that the TC is the main router and the other WiFi the secondary. Thus the ROUTING is still being done by the TC and the other wifi device is being used simply as a WiFi Access point/switch. If this is the case would the firmware on the TC allow the proper routing for TWO XBOXs on the network?
    Thank you,
    Mike

The ports are 53, 80, 88, and 3074. Since you are trying to make two Xbox consoles use those ports and you are trying to connect to a server, what you need to do is to use Port Range Triggering. You can't use Port Range Forwarding since it will only set those ports into listening mode to the IP address you set it. So if you use Port Range Forwarding it will only be open/available to one console(the one using the IP address).
You need to use PORT RANGE TRIGGERING. Disable Port Range Forwarding and DMZ. You need to enable UPnP as well if your Linksys router have this option (other model doesn't have this option but it is said to be enabled in default settings according to their tech support).
To solve the lag problem set your MTU size to 1364. This settings will work even if you have one or multiple consoles running behind the router.

  • Xbox NAT problems - two xbox in same home

I have two xbox, one 360 and the other one xbox one, the 360 is wireless, the xbox one is wired connected, the xbox one always starts with moderate and when both consoles are on at the same time, the xbox one acts very slow.  I need someone to tell me which way will be best to set this up network wise, i want the ports to be distributed to both xbox when they are connected.  If the 360 is on first then it takes over the udp 3074 port and the xbox one can no longer use it.  One post here said to create a different distribution of ip's under the my network then connect one of the xbox on the other network, for example create one to go from 1 - 125 and i just picked 140 and add the ports by forwarding them to the 140, but when i try doing that it tells me that the wireless one, which is using ip in between 1 -125 is already using it.  any help please, i appreciated.

Just enable UPnP and let the router do the dirty work. When having more than one type of game console in a home on one connection, this is usually the recommended way of doing things.

Xbox network test shows that I am running a moderate NAT. Experiencing significant lag.
How can I get the NAT to be open?

I still haven't been able to change the NAT settings on TC in order to get an open NAT with the Xbox Live connection.

  • BT Hub 3 xbox one moderate nat type

Ever since I got an xbox one it's been stuck on moderate nat type meaning I lag everywhere. How do I change this to open?

how do i do that and yes i play black ops call of duty
Look at my answer on this thread https://community.bt.com/t5/Other-Broadband-Queries/Xbox-one-moderate-NAT-on-Homehub-5/m-p/1109194/h...
This is actually for the xbox one but with slight alterations you can do the same on ps3.
Change the port forwarded to 3074 instead of 3075 and  instead of finding xboxsystemos look for the ps3.
    EDIT:
I'll list the steps again making changes that should work with ps3 although I can't confirm because I dumped my hh5 a few months ago due the fact that I now have 4 games consoles and the hub UPnP is so poor I had to buy a new router.
First  switch off ps3 then open a web browser on your PC.
First go into the hub settings by typing bthomehub.home in the address bar. If that doesn't work then try typing 192.168.1.254.
Click advanced settings. Type in password if asked then click go to advanced settings.
    Click 'Home Network'
Then find the ps3 in the network diagram. I can't remember if it is listed as ps3 or unknown
Where it says always use this IP address click 'Yes' then click Apply.
Next Click the Firewall tab then click port forwarding.
    Click 'Manage games and applications'
Click 'Add new game or application'
Where it says game or application name just type COD ps3
Where it says Copy an existing game or application click 'No'
Where it says protocol leave as 'Any'
In the port range setting type 3074 - 3074
leave translate to blank then click add
    Click apply then OK.
Go back to main port forwarding screen then where it says Game or application click the arrow in the drop down box and select COD PS3. In the device box select the ps3
Then click add then click Apply.
Switch ps3 back on and try testing connection to make sure you have nat type 2
Also try cod and you should now have an open NAT.

Hi, I have a Linksys Wireless-N Broadband Router/WRT160Nv2 and I have been trying to change my NAT connection from a moderate NAT connection to a open NAT connection for my Xbox Live on my Xbox 360. I can sign into my Xbox Live account but it is working on a moderate NAT connection. I have already enabled the UPnP and put in the proper port numbers. After doing that I signed into my Xbox Live on my Xbox 360 and tested my Xbox Live connection and still it says that I a moderate NAT connection. I do not know what elso to do and I would greatly appreciate step by step help from anybody who knows what they are doing. PLEASE HELP ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!
    Thank you

A known issue with Linksys routers is the NAT Type 3 or anything related to dropping of Internet connectivity during play time.  Network Address Translation (NAT) is the ability of a router or firewall to translate a public IP address to a private IP address and vice versa.  It adds security to the network by keeping the private IP addresses hidden from the outside world.

  • WRT160N V3 Two Xbox 360 consoles Xbox live NAT Resolution

Has anyone found a solution to the NAT problems involving two xbox 360s connecting to xbox live using the WRT160N V3 at the same time?  I always get one that reads Open NAT (usually the 1st one to sign in) and one that gets the dreaded Strict NAT type.  I have read of various solutions yet many of them do not resolve the issue.  Any help is greatly appreciated!!

You can try the below mentioned settings and check.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
On the set-up tab change the MTU Size to 1365 and click Save Settings...
Click on "Administration" tab and disable the option UPnP and click Save Settings...
Click on "Applications and Gaming" tab and then click on "Port Range Forwarding" subtab...
    1) On the first line in Application box type in ABC, in the start box type in 53 and End box type in 3074, leave the protocol as both and under ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and check the enable box, click Save Settings once done...
    2) Once you return to the set up page click on the Security tab and uncheck Block Anonymous Internet Requests and click on Save Settings...
3)Click on the Status tab and take note of DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses...
    4) Goto the XBox Network Settings and IP Address Settings and select manual IP Settings and assign the following on your Xbox
    IP Address :- 192.168.1.20, Subnet Mask :- 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway :- 192.168.1.1...
    5) Also assign the DNS Addresses on the Xbox
Use DNS1 and DNS2 Addresses you took note off of the router status tab as Primary DNS & Secondary DNS for the xbox...
    6) Turn off your modem, router, and Xbox...Wait for a minute...
    7) Plug the modem power first, wait for another minute and plug the router power cable, wait another minute and turn on the Xbox and test it...it will connect...
IP Address: 192.168.X.[last part of ip in your device]    e.g. if static ip given to the device was 192.168.X.10 get the last part and put that to the empty box.

  • 2 xboxes - strict nat - airport extreme

    Ok here's my problem.
I've got two xbox 360s connected to two MacBook pros running snow leopard using Internet connection sharing. Playing on xbox live works fine, but when we try to join each others party on xbox live to play on the same team, it doesn't let us connect. When we run an xbox live test it says we have a moderate or strict nat type. The MacBook pros are both connected to our airport extreme on the same network. I've tested them both wired directly into the airport and they work fine on an open NAT type, but this isn't feasible we don't have two HD TVs where the router is.
So my question is, how do I get both xboxes to an open NAT type so we can play online in the same party?
Microsoft support said the airport extreme was not a supported router. I can't afford another one.
    Any suggestions?

Reply on @teressax with a question.
I was triggered because you are talking about a bridged situation, I have also a ps3 and want to stream music and video to that ps3. My current fritzbox modem router does not do the job good enough. So I was thinking on extending my network with an airport extreme. In my network is also a web server.
The modem/router uses the range 192.168.178.1-255
Question: Can I put the AE wired(!) extending into that same range? And connect my network to the AE then to keep the same internal network range?
I am intending to switch the wireless of the modem/router off and use the wireless if the AE also of course.
Is it then still possible to reach the web server from the outside?
I still have to find out how to do the streaming, but I am searching for someone that tells me that it will work.
    Regards,
    Jim

  • HELP with WRT160Nv2 (2 xbox one NAT)

I have 2 xbox ones in my house connected to the WRT160Nv2 router. I have tried literally everything. Port forwarding, triggering, uPnP, static IP's, blah blah blah. From the research I've done uPnP should be the only thing necessary to run two xboxes at the same time in the same game. Is this router's UPNP just total garbage? Is there a firmware update that will solve my problem? Please link me if so. I am currently running Firmware Version: v2.0.02  . (probably the default, but doing a few google searches people say some firmware updates for this router make it worse)
Please help me out because researching this stuff really gives me a headache after a while.
If this matters... We are able to play in the same games occasionally but often times one or both of us will drop out from the game. It's especially bad in call of duty. Sometimes I will drop even if the other xbox isn't even turned on, so i don't even know where to start.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Is ISP Modem/Service using Dynamic or Static WAN IP addressing?
What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link>http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CAT6 is recommended.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.
    http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=88e63d78588142e6bb68e22d7faf2046_Configuring_the_M...
If the ISP modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>http://www.practicallynetworked.com/networking/fixing_double_nat.htm and http://computer.howstuffworks.com/nat.htm If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
    Router and Wired Configurations
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Once IPs are reserved for both, Do a factory network reset on the XB1s to clear out any bad configurations.
    Turn OFF XB1s
Set up port range triggering using 0 and 65535.
    Keep uPnP enabled.
Disable any firewall temporarily for testing.
Save settings and reboot the router.
After router is back to ready, turn on one XB1 and check NAT. Turn on the 2nd XB1 and check NAT.
