WRT54GS - 7.0 Wireless signal disappears periodically

I have had my WRT54GS - 7.0 for about two months. Because of the way my apartment is set up, I am using a wireless card in my pc instead of a wired LAN connection from my cable modem. My ISP is fine; the computer wired to the router never experiences any difficulty.
My problem is that once in a while my wireless signal dips or disappears. My pc is only about 40 feet from the wireless router, and most of the time my signal is quite strong. I have software that allows me to see competing wireless networks and I know that I am not sharing a channel with anyone. It doesn't happen regularly; it will be fine for a week or even a month, then I'll have a horrendous couple of days where nothing I do can get it to connect. Sometimes it is two hours before the signal comes back. Cycling the power and resetting the router has no effect.
Should I buy a wireless repeater, or is there some other sinister agent at work besides cruddy signal transmission?
Any and all suggestions are welcome, and thanks to all who took time to read!

dgold!
Make sure that there are no interferences between the two devices. Changing the channel would do as well, an if still it's the same. Set the "advance wireless settings" on the router [Beacon = 70; RTS = 2305; Fragmentation = 2306].

  • WRT54GS V2 Dropping wireless signal

I have a WRT54GS V2 wireless router that performed flawlessly up until recently.  Now, wired access works just fine, but any wireless device connected will lose signal in 5 minutes or less.   I have upgraded to the latest firmware, reset to factory default, etc. etc.
This is occurring with multiple devices.  It seemed to start when we tried to connect my wife's Nintendo DS and changed the security settings.  Now, however, the connection continually drops even with security disabled and nothing but MAC filtering managing access.
Also - and this is the oddest part - the primary laptop trying to use the wireless (XP Pro) shows connectivity opposite what it should be.  When the connection is valid, Windows says it is disconnected, and vice-versa when there is no signal.
Any suggestions?  This device was absolutely rock-solid until a few months ago, and I'd hate to have to replace it.

Make sure you upgrade the firmware using the ftp.linksys.com downloading the tftp file & also reset the router for 30 secs in such a way that power light is blinking on the router & do a complete network power cycle.
Also, the advanced wireless settings to Beacon Interval=50,Frag thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet Requests & it will definately work!!!

  • HT1218 2.4 GHz wireless signal not working has disappeared

I have a Time Capsule running the firmware version 7.6.1 (the latest) and today for some reason the 2.4 GHz wireless signal stops works and disappears (the signal no longer appears in the list of available netowrks on my iMac or iOS devices).  The 5GHz signal remains and does just fine.  When I cycle the power on the TC with about 30 sec downtime  before powering back on the 2.4 GHz signal comes up just fine; however, after about a half hour to an hour the wireless signal disappears again .  I have seen posts on the net that suggest renaming the wireless channels and changing the channel.  Will try these but this seems to me to be a bit of a bandaid - while this may help I'd like to know why this is happening so I can perhaps take other actions to prevent it in the future.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

  • E1000 Router Wireless signal will disappear after some time

    Hi,
I have set up the E1000 this week, i found that the wireless signal would disappear after some time if the wireless connection is not in use.
    For example, on my iphone
    1. I search for the wireless signal and successfully got the IP
    2. after using for some time, i put the iphone aside
    3. when i want to use the wireless again, the iphone is not yet connected to the wireless
    4. i would then need to search for the wireless signal and connect again.
This causes problems because i am using some VPN connection at my laptop and it would disconnect it.
Is there any config that would keep the wireless signal ?
    Thanks!

Try changing the wireless channel on the router.
Also try to change some advanced wireless settings on the router. Click on Wireless tab and go to Advanced wireless settings. Change the Beacon interval to 75, RTS threshold to 2307 and fragmentation threshold to 2306. Save the settings.
    See if that helps you.

  • Wrt310n wireless connection disappears

    All,
    I recently bought wrt310n. I wanted a GB switch and N wireless.
Consistently, the wireless signal will stop (disappear) then reappear, maybe. It's very sporadic and I've done about everything I know to do to stop it.
It's not interference or settings. I can get it stable for 2 days then down. Then back up...
    Any clues?

Access setup page of router .....
    Click on Advanced Wireless
settings>>Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation
Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings" .....

  • Does WRT54G receive + transmit wireless?

I'm concerned that the WRT54G recommended by Best Buy is not the solution I need. I don't want to open the package until I figure this out (since it's no fun trying to return at Best Buy). I have a wireless router in-place serving both wired and wireless devices in one area of my house. I have another area that has 3 wired devices I want to connect and bought the WRT54G router as an access point with wired ports, so I wouldn't have to run cable across my house. I downloaded the users manual and checked what meager specs were on the linksys site and can't confirm that the WRT54G will serve as an access point by receiving a wireless signal from my existing wireless router, rather than getting input via cable from the cable modem. The access point I found at the store only had one wired port and I didn't want to have to put a hub behind it to handle multiple devices. Hope this makes sense. Appreciate any input.

Only the Client Bridge, WRT54G, requires DD-WRT.  Have you seen the sample pic for Wireless Bridge?
    http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge
Also the instructions say WEP security....  WPA works too.  Just take your time and follow the instructions to the letter and you should be fine.  And dont forget the resets, reset before flashing and reset after.

  • Using WRT54G as second wireless with E2500

I've been reading threads on this but want to make sure I have this correct.
Currently, I'm using the E2500 as my main wireless router in my home (upstairs).  I replaced my WRT54G with the E2500 for my DSL connection throughout the house.
I run an ethernet cable as a hard connection downstairs to my smart TV.
I'm now adding another device (Channel Master DVR+) that will also need an internet connection.
I need two connections from one ethernet cable (already run downstairs).  After reading a little on this it sounds like I can use my old WRT54G as a secondary router/switch downstairs.  (Sorry if I'm not using the correct terms.)
In order to get my two connections (Smart TV and DVR+) I need at least a splitter, or something?  However... "why not extend my wireless downstairs for a stronger wireless connection downstairs?" was my thinking.
How do I setup my E2500 to recognize the WRT54G - run two hard connections to my TV and the DVR+, and also extend a stronger wireless signal downstairs for my girls iPod touches?
    Thanks - Glen
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    No problem,
Actually the E2500 also has a 5GHZ signal you should change the SSID for:
    Ex:
    UpstairsWifi
    UpstairsWifi_5ghz
Sorry I was wrong about the guest SSID you can't change that.
Login on your E2500 at the link below:
    http://192.168.1.1
You can change your wireless SSID's and passphrases as show below:
For you WRT54G depending on which IP Address you gave it login:

    or as the doc mentions

  • Home nw w/ two distinct wireless signals

I've got a AEBS (gigabit) and and WRT54G. I've got the WRT54G set up as a router (not gateway) device, attached to the AEBS, broadcasting a G-only signal (unique SSID to reflect this).
I'm doing this so I can set up the AEBS for N-Only access (again, unique SSID to reflect this).
My question is this: if I were to set both devices to the same SSID, would my MBP automatically connect to the WRT54G becuase of better signal strength or would it automatically "prefer" the AEBS because of the better connection speed?

My guess ( and only a guess) is that you would see two wireless networks with the same SSID, but since they have different MAC address's, they would connect differently. If the WRT54G is in bridge mode you would still have two different access points. I don't think it would prefer one over the other. Which ever you joined last.... Couldn't hurt to experiment.
Label one AEBSn and AEBSg ?

  • Time Capsule not producing wireless signal

We have a time capsule serving as our main wireless for the house and it recently stopped producing a wireless signal and has a solid amber light. I've tried leaving it unplugged and I've tried resetting the device. Neither of those plans had any effect at all. How can I fix this?
I believe my wife bought this in 09 and its got a 2 TB hard drive. Not sure which version that makes this.

Unfortunately, a solid amber is light is not a good sign.
Try a complete Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule using the steps below. This procedure will not affect any of the data that you have stored on the internal hard drive.
Power off the Time Capsule for 15-20 minutes or longer
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule first, and keep holding for an additional 9-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power back in to the Time Capsule
Release the reset button after the 9-10 hold period and allow a full minute for the Time Capsule to restart
The Time Capsule light should normally stay solid amber for about 30 seconds and then change to a slow, blinking amber light, indicating that the Time Capsule has been reset and it can now be reconfigured.
If you try the Factory Default Reset a few times and the light stays solid amber, unfortunately the hard drive has failed, or there is an internal power supply issue with the Time Capsule.
You should take the Time Capsule to an Apple Store.....if you have one in your area.....or contact Apple Support directly to discuss your options.

If the Time Capsule is out of warranty or not covered by AppleCare, Apple will not offer repairs but there are some shops that specialize in this type of repair. See this link for more details:

Hows it going every one? I have a WRT54G V8.0 wireless router, and I tried to update it's firmware earlier and I guess I failed miserably! The thing wont network, wont let me into thelinksys GUI toconfigure anything. But all the lights work... and it wont let me go into administration mode either to force the old firmware back on. I am really stuck so if anyone knows how to re-flash a router without the routers GUI or something similar, that would be of great help... thanks!
    -Stephen.

there seems to be consistant issues with Linksys routers according to all the posts ive been reading for the past month while i try to fix my on and off again internet connection.  its becomming very annoying.  i have asked my cable company to replace my modem, which they did and that didn't even help.  last year i bought a new linksys router thinking it would solve my problem back then.  it did for a while, then my lap top wouldn't connect any, so i sent it into have it checked and it came back with no problems.  soooooooooo apparently, while i am connected to my neighbors open connection from his BELKIN ROUTER and even though the signal is very weak............amazingly enough!! i am still online while typing this.......funny eh?? WELL........it seems to me......that i guess i wont be buying linksys anything anymore.  Especially after spending hours on the help line (INDIA) trying to reset channels and reset the router box itself.  i give up.......i  have 2 pieces of crap routers for sale cheap......any takers?  dont waste your time

  • WRT160N wireless routher, wireless signal not strong within apartment

I have had the wrt54g for a while now and just recently it stopped working and I had no choice but to get the wrt160n and with lots of difficulty was able to get that going. The wireless signal, on a wpa2personal is fine when I am close to the box which is in the basement of our apartment but upstairs the signal is never as strong as the older linksys wireless router was.
I am really at a loss and the customer service was absolutely no help.  I have tried several devices and same result on all of them, max maybe 4 bars for a few min, moslty 1-2 bars.
What is the issue? What other info do you need? any suggestions?
I am a day from returning the box and moving onto another brand or buying the old school one again if I can find it.
Please let me know anyone, you are my only hope!

  • Wireless signal but unable to view web pages

I have a WRT54G version 6 wireless router, it's security enabled and my XP laptop recognizes the signal and says I'm connected, excellent strength. Problem is that when I open IE no pages will load, if I connect the modem to my ethernet connection I can connect fine.
    Any ideas?

I'm having the exact same problem.  This morning I went to the website to follow the directions from Easy Answers: How to set up PPPoE DSL connections with Linksys Router......just a great help this was...after all the plug/unplug/plug/computer off/on/off/on....When I clicked on IE icon to connect to the internet, All it Connected to was this LINKSYS page...couldn't go  any place else!!!
I've had to unplug everything and go back to the DSL modem direct to this PC to get on the internet to go to this link....Now, interesting it does make sence that both the modem and router can not have the same IP address, but if I change the router..what do I change it too???  May DSL works at 192.168.1.1 which is the same as the link I went too to get the Linksys page.  Thanks

  • Cisco 7605 router dumps wireless signal

LAN neophyte (me) just switched to Linksys wireless-G router. After brief periods of excellent performance (13 minutes to 4 hours), router shuts down wireless signal. One episode also included no ethernet signal either; next day worked fine for an hour, then dropped wireless signal. Cisco setup menus are very complex... Where should I start? Reset to factory defaults?

Check the Linksys web site to make sure you have the latest firmware installed.

  • 3G signal disappears every time while making phone calls

    Hi all,
After my iPhone was updated to 4.2.1, the 3G signal disappears every time while I make phone calls, but if it is hooked up with WiFi then it would be fine. Does the same problem happen to anyone of you? Any suggestions?
    Thanks a lot

I have had similar problems. I-Phone worked beautifully for about 3 weeks the I started getting static on my end. I did some research and narrowed down the fact that the static was only heard on my end. It started just sporadically but is now about 85% of the time when Imake calls. It happens in multiple locations and cities. The caller on the other end never hears it. There is no problem with speaker phone or playing music etc...It happens when calling hard lines as well as wireless (ie...verified calls to Sprint, Verizon, Nextel wireless callers as well as Government Land Lines, Verizon home phone and Comcast Ip Phone callers) Stopped in to AT&T and they looked at me funny and suggested I ask Apple to replace the phone.

  • Losing Wireless Signal

For the last few weeks I have been having trouble with my wireless signal. I will lose internet on my Macbook or iPhones even though the signal strength will show that it's there. I have to unplug my Airport Extreme (802.11g) and let it sit for a few seconds before restarting it. It then works okay for a bit. Then it cuts out again. All through this, the airport indicator shows that it's connected and at full strength. Even the network preferences show it being there at full strength. When I try to log back in with my login and password, it can't connect. The only thing that works is unplugging.
    Help!

    Welcome to the discussions!
Signal strength is only half of the story when you are looking for a good quality connection. Noise is the other half. For example, you could have very strong signal strength, but also have high noise on your network. You would have a poor, intermittent connection as a result.
It's also possible to have just fair signal strength with very low noise. This will yield a much more stable and reliable connection.
So, the "bars" at the top of the screen are there pretty much for show. They usually display a stronger signal than you really have and they tell you nothing about the noise on your network.
To see if this might be the case, I suggest that you download a utility like iStumbler. Be sure to scroll down the page to find the correct version for your operating system.
Once you have it installed open iStumbler to display your network and other nearby networks. If you have a "good" signal, you'll see your network as a green graph. Yellow is marginal, red is very weak. You may be surprised to find that the "full" signal strength that you thought you had is actually quite a bit less than you might have imagined. Check the noise figures as well.
Look for any other wireless networks that may be using the same channel or a close adjacent channel as your wireless. If that's the case, change the channel on your wireless network to a setting that is as far away as possible from other networks. That may give you some "clear airspace" and help your signal.
If you have any cordless phones there, turn them all off for a period to see if your signal strength improves and noise goes down. Even a cordless phone at the neighbors can cause problems, which might explain the intermittent issues that you have there. Or, there may be a new wireless network nearby that's interfering with your network at times. These are hard to isolate, and iStumbler may not display all of the them because it displays "visible" networks. It won't display a "hidden" network if the user has enabled that option on his/her network.
