WRT54GS Admin

I just set up a WRT54GS V6 for my kid. Everthing is working so far except the admin pages in her browser. 192.168.1.1 brings up the admin page but the only thing available is the basic setup page. No other options at all. I was going to update the firmware but that page is not available. What do I do?
Tnx,
Dusty

To view the router's web pages:
Use Internet Explorer, it usually works.
JavaScript must be enabled.
Use a computer that is wired to the router.
In the non-working computer, temporarily turn off your software firewall.
If you are using Zone Alarm, right click on the ZA icon in the system tray (lower right corner of screen) and then click "Shutdown ZoneAlarm", and see if this fixes your problem. If this does not work, try the following with Zone Alarm: Open the ZAISS control center, go to Privacy, then temporarily turn off Ad Blocking and Cookie Control, and see if that fixes your problem.
If you are using Noton Internet Security with the Add-on Pack, be sure to turn off the Pop-up Blocker. Some users have reported that they needed to uninstall the entire Norton Add-on Pack.
If you cannot get anything at 192.168.1.1 then perhaps this is not your router's address. Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key. Look at the "Default Gateway". Is it 192.168.1.1 ? Point your browser to the "Default Gateway", then login to your router.
If the above fails, disconnect your modem from the router, and try again. If this corrects your problem, then most likely you have a "modem-router" rather than an ordinary modem. Check to see if your "modem-router" is using the same 192.168.1.x address space as your Linksys router. If it is, then report back with this problem, and also state the make and model of your modem-router.
If all of the above fails, power down your entire system, unplug it from the wall, wait one minute, then power up and try again.
If all of the above tips fail, then reset the router to factory defaults: Power down the router and disconnect all wires from it. Wait one minute. Power up the router, allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes), then press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release the button and allow the router to reset and reboot ( 2-3 minutes). Power down router. Wait one minute. Connect one computer, by wire, to a LAN port on the router. Boot up system. It should work.
If the reset does not fix your system, then you need to download and install (or re-install) the latest firmware for your router. After the firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.

  • Question re Zone Alarm and WRT54G admin page display problem

First - thanks to all who posted about Zone Alarm - I was going to exchange my router this weekend - I spent an hour on the phone with tech support and she was trying to get my router updated with v9 through a roundabout way, but I kept getting an error that said my Flash could not be erased - so she thought the firware on my router was somehow corrupted. But I'm definitely going to check out the Zone Alarm idea first.
My question is - can someone tell me exactly how to disable Zone Alarm? I thought I had done so, but I guess not - I'm not very familiar with Zone Alarm. Also - I had purchased Zone Alarm about a year ago, (was using it with a Linksys wired router) and suddenly I am getting messages on restart telling me my "trial period is up" - of course I can't find my original packaging to enter a serial number (altho one is already entered and they say it's not *valid*) so I have to select an option that tells me I am no longer protected. (unless I pay another $40 to re-register it!!) Could this be part of the problem?
Final question - sorry for being such a newbie - but do I really need both Zone Alarm and the firewall in the router?  ZA says it has caught thousands of attempts on my system - while it was running with my non-wireless router installed - is that a crock? Or is actually good to have both software and hardware routers?  And if I do need ZA still - does it have to be disabled everytime I want to access the admin page? Then turned back on?
    ugh!
    thanks -
    Mary

LOL - This forum is great, I've been here 5 minutes and now have some fresh perspectives on a couple of problems.
I would NOT recommend paying for ZA. What the heck were they thinking when they created their 'Zones'? They should have named it something else for one, like 'Complicated rules and policies that are guaranteed to hack up everything you try to do (and it gets even worse when you restore the settings you tweaked back to their defaults)' But I guess that's a little too long.
Marynospam: Your Windows firewall (if ur on windows) will do a pretty good job of keeping out unwanted visitors from the Internet. It will NOT stop malware from calling out! Modern day scumbags slip you a trojan that will spy, record, copy, and call them back with whatever they want from you. If you are using Microsoft Windows DO NOT TURN OFF your 3rd party firewall! Of the firewall/security vendors I have experience with, McAfee is the best. I have only used their firewall and viruscan, and don't have experience with their 'spyware' package.

What is the exact model and version of your router?
What's your dsl modem? the address on the status page of your router which is 192.168.1.97 is actually the address of your dsl modem: your modem actually is what we call as a modem-router) semi-acting routers.
Try setting the modem into bridge mode by doing that it will propely syncronize your modem to your router. and if the  same problem exist>< try setting a static ip and dns on 1 of your computer that you always get the ip address conflict.

  • WRT54G Router vs. Zonealarm

Ok, i thought my router was defective when i got it because for a week straight my internet connection was going down.  It seemed to happen at the same time 5pm EST every day.  I couldnt tell if it was because the router and computers were idle and the connection would drop and be a network card problem, or if it was the router.  After two weeks of frustration and cursing out my WRT54G router something caught the corner of my eye, it was red and in the corner...ZONEALARM!  There was a lot of red, in fact there were thousands of blocked intrusions.  I shut it down, and amazingly the internet came up, and has been up for 2 weeks straight.  I didnt try a lower security level, I just turned it off.  I dont understand why it is doing this.  I have trusted IP's set up, 192.168.1.1 as well as my home network 192.168.1.100 thru 192.168.1.150.  The problem is not in the cable modem, everything checks ok with the router as far as ip address, and connection to the internet, its definately zonealarm.  Has anyone had a problem with this besides me?  If so, what am i doing wrong?  I have never had a problem using zonealarm in the past with a different type of router.  Thanks all!

I have the same issue with ZoneAlarm, and not having the wrt54g admin pages display. But you don't have to uninstall the program. Rather from the zonealarm icon in the system tray. Right click and choose shutdown zonealarm internet security suite.
I called linksys tonight to understand why this happens, and they said for wireless connections moreso than wired connections, the software firewalls (zonealarm, macaffee, norton, etc) can cause troubles. The linksys support lady went as far as to say that you shouldn't have a software firewall running, since the router performs the firewall function. The two will get things messed up.
    good luck

  • Can't connect to router's admin interface (WRT54G v3.1)

    Hi.
I have problem with my Linksys WRT54G v3.1 router. I can't connect to its admin interface and broadband Internet connection doesn't work.
The power LED is flashing. When I restart the router or unplug and plug it again, nothing happens. The power LED just continue to flash and I can't connect to the router. I even tried to put new firmware but program that I downloaded from linksys.com can't connect to the router.
When I enter http://192.168.1.1 into Firefox or Explorer, I get "Connecting to http://192.168.1.1..." and nothing else happens.
I hope that someone can help me because it's pretty annoying that my home network doesn't work...

Sounds like your router is bricked, flashing power LED is not good.  Contact the RMA department and explain whats going on.  Your router has the Linux operating system.  When you talk to them make sure you mention this and you want the same router as a replacement which is the WRT54GL.  If you dont specify that you want the same they will send you a version 6.  Then you are looking at more headaches.
In the RMA form you have to add "ONLY" to the version box on the RMA form. That's because most customers prefer the latest if they have it, and they try to accommodate as much as possible. Rarely is there a need for a specific version.

  • WRT54G v5 admin screen does not load completely

I have a WRT54G v5 and when I go to the admin screen (http) it does not load completly.  It was working the other day.  I was in the process of downloading a newer version of the firmware, I am using 1.0.6 and was looking at the 1.0.9.  I have it on the computer but have not applied it to the router yet.
I am using IE7 and was able to view the page previously with IE7 but am not able to now.  I have rebooted the router (cold start).  No difference.  I can still get to the internet and the wireless is working also, I just cannot make any changes to the router.
I need help, if someone is willing.
    Thanks
    Dave

Check if your firewall is on. I was having the same problem and I just shut down Zone Alarm...

  • Admin problem with WRT54G

I am logging into my WRT54G to try to upgrade my firmware. The problem is that when I log in, I get a error on the page and it will not bring up any of the links or icons that I would use to go to Administration or check my wireless or anything. Does anyone even know where to start with this? I am using XP Pro and IE6 SP2.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Derek

If you are getting a 401 error, the router most likely did not accept your user name and password.  The defaults are:  user name is left blank, and password is "admin"  (with no quotes).  If you changed these, then you will need to enter whatever you changed them to.  If you cannot remember what you set them to, then the only other option is to reset the router to factory defaults.  This will reset the user name and password to the values noted above.
Sometimes this problem is caused by communication errors between the computer and router.  To correct this, do the following:
Use Internet Explorer, it usually works.
    JavaScript must be enabled.
Use a computer that is wired to the router.
In the non-working computer, temporarily turn off your software firewall. Note that some Zone Alarm users have had to uninstall the firewall to get it turned off.

  • WRT54GS Connects to the Internet Not Admin Page

I am able to connect to the internet with the WRT54GS and was able to access the admin page, but now all I get is "Page Can Not Be Displayed". I powered everything off and than turned on the broadband DSL modem, the router and than the PC but still can't get the admin page to load. I am using Windows XP. Can someone please help. Thanks in advance

What is the Ip of your DSL modem? is this the same as your WRT54GS perhaps?
have you setup a proxy cache in your web browsers LAn settings perhaps?
any antivirus/web scanning or firewall utils that are blocking it?

  • HTTPS Admin causes WRT54G to pause for 3 mins!!!

Using Firefox 2.0.6 (with HTTPS Enabled) for Remote Admin Functions on a WRT54G (V 8.00.2) causes the Wireless Router to stop all WAN and WLAN Activity for 3 Minutes (Wired LAN seems unaffected)!!!  The "problem" does NOT
occur when Firefox is run from the WLAN/LAN nor when IE 6 SP1 is used Remotely???  A quick "workaround" is Disabling HTTPS Access, even though that is NOT "idle" for Remote Admin Functions (outside of disabling Remote Admin all
    together)...
Has anybody else noticed this "feature"???

    Hi There,
Go to Slide Properties > Under Actions > On Enter set Show Widget and On Exit set Go to the next slide.
Then preview it and see if that makes any difference.

  • WRT54G ver.6 Admin page not available

Hi, Two days ago I saw on linksys website new firmware and decided to upgrade.I guess the installation went wrong, and my router WRT54G ver.6 ended up faulty. The problem is that I cannot access the router's Admin page (http://192.168.1.1), the browser gives me message "connection interrupted - The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading." The power light on the router when it starts is steady, no blinking. I can ping the router and as far as I can see it's fully functional in its default mode. I can access internet via cable and wifi. The ssid is Linksys.
I tried all kinds of hard reset, I guess evertything I could find on your forum.
Is there hope for my router or is it "Bricked"?
    Thanks for your Help
    S...

    Hard reset your router -
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
Also make sure that your computer is set to 'Obtain IP Address Automatically' , disable any firewalls, security softwares on the computer before trying to access the setup page...
If it does not work try connecting a different computer/laptop to the router's ethernet port and see if you can open the setup page...

  • Setting up security and such for wireless router wrt54g without admin rights (work computer)

We are moving, I am in a new location with a new company and my only computer is this one from work. Trying to get my home network setup, I'm locked out of admin rights on this thing and am trying to set up the above router. I thought I had a modem problem at first, but finally I am online wired for now to the cable modem. I would like to get this router up and running, but I can't use the easy setup disk, and I just tried using the easy setup download and it is locked out as well. How can I get my router setup with security, with no admin rights on the pc?
This will be my first wireless router, so I am very green on the specifics and terminology. Any help is most appreciated.
    Many thanks,

    Thank you toomanydonuts!
I will do this when I get back to the townhouse this evening.
Just so that I am prepared for tonight - I want to confirm and ask a few questions on the "options" and note a couple things I noticed that may help with answers...
Internet connection type - should be easy, I assume there is a "cable modem" option.
SSID - I do not know what this means or what to choose
wireless encryption method (WEP, WPA, WPA2) - Which is best, or is there one I must pick due to computer used and such, I also want to get my Nintendo Wii accessing correctly, I saw these options on that setup, though it didn't work per my first message on the board. I assume whatever encryption method used needs to be chosen for the Wii?
wireless encryption password - I think I can handle this one
    A couple of notes -
this laptop has this always on radar looking for wireless connections - how can I name my router so I know it's mine, other than the fact that it is the strongest signal. Maybe that's a network setting?
Thanks again, glad I came here.
Edit: I suppose I should add, just to ensure - in order to do this process through the url provided above, I need to be ethernet wired through the router to the modem? in order to access last night, I was straight into the modem, didn't seem to work wired through the router.

a shotgun :-) If you've reset it properly, you should be able to get into the web management. If you can't, there could be something wrong with the PC or browser you're using.
i've read on another website that if i download firefox it will work. something about the cookies.
You can enable cookies on Internet Explorer too. Take a look at cookies setting under Tools - Internet Options - Privacy.

  • HELP WRT54G: Remote Admin working with it DISABLED!

I set up a web server last night and configure port forwarding to go to it (port 80). I connect to my IP address from the internet and I get the router configuration web page! I immediately changed my password from the default but now what.
I have Remote management disabled. When I click "Save settings" (like on the password change) it redirects to port 8080 so I think it "thinks" it's somehow got it enabled.
I think the router is a old version 4 but I'm not sure. The config window reports Firmware Version: v4.21.1.
What the heck's going on here?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Ok, figured it out myself.
Re-burned the firmware - same version. Reset to the factory defaults and set everything back up. It's working for now but I don't like how it just decided to take over port 80 on the WAN interface. Hopefully it will last for a while, it seems like there aren't many rock solid home routers out there these days. Maybe a good gigabit router will show up soon for under $100 bucks....

  • WRT54G firmware failure leaving no access to router config

I have a WRT54G router.  Running Vista SP2 64-bit on a laptop wired to router.  When I first tried to upgrade the firmware I was connected wirelessly.  (I know, please just think it but don't type it)  During the upgrade the internet connection disconnected and the upgrade failed.  I am connecting right now wirelessly using someones unsecure network.  I attempted to upgrade the firmware to 8.00.7.  Since then I am unable to access the router config using IP 192.168.1.1.  I have read as many posts as I can handle.  I have checked and that is the IP showing in Vista, (Network & Sharing, view status, properties) however I cannot ping that IP.  It times out every time.  I have done all the resets (10 seconds and up to 1 minute) on the router and power cycle etc.  Nothing.  I downloaded the firmware utility and I get an error message everytime that it is unable to get responses from the server.  I have tried my password, which I think is gone due to all the resets, and am using admin as the password.  I have disabled my firewall.  I do have Network Magic and when I checked control internet access it says I am able to do so.  Is there a way to disable Network Magic?  Can that be the issue?  When all this started I had my own internet connetion.  I'm in the process of moving so I have disconnected my internet service.  Since I'm only trying to connect to the router locally, do I really need to have a live internet connection?  Please, HELP!  I don't want to buy a new router.  This one has been very reliable.  If I do have to buy something new, can you recommend something just as reliable.
There have been 2 or 3 times where it looked as though I was going to be able to connect to config interface and the firsrt basic screen loads with minimal data and no clickable links to allow me to change screens.  The "&" from one of the links that is supposed to appear but does not,  is the only thing that appears in that area and if I click it, I either get a error from IE that it cannot connect, or, it takes me to the Ports screen with minimal data and I cannot progress from there.  In the top right corner of the screen, it does show the firmware version is 8.00.7.  ?????
P.S.  Obviously, I'm not very computer savvy so excuse me if I'm missing the obvious.

  • Step by step complete setup for WRT54G ver.6 with Laptop and XBOX 360

Hello.  I am sorry to post this, I am sure it is a juevenile and redundent question...but I have tried to look for the set up cd (I can find where to download it...though I can find the firmware upgrade or whatever).  My friend at work said it would do all the setup pretty much automatically for me.
I somewhat know computers, but you might go ahead and make your replies VERY lamen's terms or I might not be able to follow.  Anyways, what I need, is a step by step/screen by screen directions for a secure network.  I have made a partial attempt at setting it up and it technically works, but I would feel better if I did the steps a-z in order, so I know that it is done correctly.  I also am not totally confident in its security as it is now.  (Also, technically, I did not check the XBOX again after getting the new laptop, I am just assuming it is still working because it was before).
My problem is I can't seem to find very good directions for setting up the router...I only find partials or confusing directions.
So here are the things I am trying to connect:
    Liksys WRT54G ver. 6
    Gateway Laptop running Windows Vista
    XBOX 360 - WIRED
(I had a PC and a laptop, but they both died at the same time and I have only been able to replace the laptop at this point...the PC will come later and not sure at this point if it will be Wired or not).
I have a cable Modem between the Router and the wall...I didn't look at that for brand/etc...but I can get it ASAP if needed.
Here are the settings that I have so far:
    Changed the Router Name
    Changed the SSID
Have DHCP set to 3  (XBOX, PC, Laptop)
    Wireless SSID Broadcast: Disable
Username and Password changed to my own info
    UPnP: Enable
I may have changed other things without knowing it.  So like I said, a complete, step by step screen by screen set up would be totally appreciated.  I haven't done anything in the security tab, all that is totally foreign to me, so I am just not broadcasting for now until I can get some help setting things up with you guys.
And if someone is familiar with the Laptop/XBOX 360 setup, and I need to change any of the settings on the XBOX itself, could you please include that in your directions?  I know that isn't technically what THIS forum is for, but it would sure be helpful to me if you happen to know both parts anyways.
    Thanks a lot (in advance)!

So all you just need to do is, secure your Wireless Network. Follow the setps bellow and change the settings on your Router.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
