Wrt54gs AND TORRENTS problem

I just went from a d-link router to a Linksys wrt54gs. Before the light on bit torrent when downloading was always green now with the new router it is staying yellow and the download is real slow. I also have a game adapter WGA54G hooked uo to a xbox 360 which downloads the demos super fast. How do i get the yellow light to go to green????

try and adjust the MTU on the router ....start at 1492 and if necessary go to 1200...
have you forwarded the ports required by torrents on the router ?

  • WRT54GS Router torrent problem on 2 PCs

Hiya. I recently connected 2 PCs to a WRT54GS ver6 Linksys router. The PCs each use a WUSB54GS ver2.1 adapter to connect to it. Everything is fine, however I'm having a problem with torrents being limited on one PC. The first PC connects fine, everything runs smoothly and fast. However when I try to connect to the same torrent with the other PC, its greatly limited. Its never given full access, and whereas normally it would have 20+ seeders, I'm lucky to get 2. Download speed on the first PC is 100kbps, whereas the second is 5-20kbps. I've looked around the internet and been unable to find this specific problem. It seems as if 1 PC has been giving the OK by the router, but the other is being throttled back for some reason. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks

Running peer-to-peer software is a known cause for router slow downs and disconnections.  When a "torrent" is running, it will typically make over 100, and often over 200 connections.  The router must keep track of all these connections.  The router has a limited amount of memory to work with, so this leads to router slow downs and disconnections.
If possible, have only one computer running torrents at a time.  Additionally, you can go into the peer-to-peer software and reduce the number of connections that the software can make.   This effectively limits the impact that the torrent is having on the router, and this sometimes helps.
Alternatively, if one of your computers has this "slow" problem even when torrents is not running on the other computer, then perhaps you simply have a poor wireless connection.  This can happen even with a 100% signal strength.  There are many things that cause poor wireless connections:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, Bluetooth (including Bluetooth game controllers), microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
    Hope this helps.

  • WRT54G and Playstation problems

    Hello,
I have the WRT54G router v. 4 and I am connected to my playstation 2 through an ethernet cable.  I have my PS2 assigned a static IP address and have disabled UPnP (I read somewhere this solves many PS2 connectivity problems).
My wireless connection is nearly flawless and never goes out.  However, my wired connection to my PS2 goes out quite often.  I also receive "can not connect to ISP" messages sometimes when trying to connect online.
What is the problem and what can I do to establish a more reliable connection?
    Thanks.

Try this link to configure the Play Station with the router .....
    Hope it works ....

  • WRT54G and laptop problems

my new laptop picks up the signal from the router and says the connection is "excellant", yet when I test the connection, it says it cannot find one and that windows cannot identify the problem. I know for a fact that this is a router problem and not a laptop problem since my Wii has similar issues. Any suggestions?

    What's your laptop's ip address?
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

  • Problem with WRT54G and DSL NAT router

I have a WRT54G connected to a Westell DSL NAT router. I would like to be able to allow incoming connections to my FreeBSD server.
The Westell router allows me to set IP Passthrough (they call it "Single Static IP"). This gives the WRT54G the outside IP address given to the DSL router. I can then set up the WRT54G for DDNS and port forwarding to forward specific ports I want to my server.
This works, for about 2-3 days. Then, I start to randomly lose outside connectivity. Web pages start coming up with missing elements, or taking a long time to load. This will eventually lead to total loss of outgoing communication.
Normally, I would blame this on the Westell NAT router, but as I'm losing connectivity to the internet, I'm also losing connectivity to the WRT54G. It will try to load configuration pages but will be slow with missing elements, etc.
All communications between computers on my inside network continue to function properly, it's just connectivity to the WRT54G and the internet that seem to start to fail.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I just upgraded the firmware on the WRT54G from 1.01.1 to 1.02.0, but I don't imagine this will help.
    Thanks,
    David Chamberlain

Try setting the MTU to manual and change the value to 1450

  • Both WRT54G and WRT300N stop responding

At one of buildings at our church, we have had a WRT54G acting as an access point. For awhile it would require a reboot about twice a month due to lack of connectivity. About two weeks ago, it would barely function. Our staff could connect to it but connectivity would go down several times a day. After reboot it would work for an hour tops. I pulled out the WRT54G and replace with a WRT300N. The staff experienced the same problem. There are about 8 staff members that connect to the router for LAN and internet access. What could possibly cause the dramatic drop in performance? Given no network changes. When folks connect with wired Ethernet at their desks, they do not experiences any problems. There has been an iMac and an MacBook Pro added to the wireless network. Is it possible at wireless interface is sending spurious/chatty packets? How could I monitor this? An MAC address filter is used for security. No WAP or WPE password security.

try putting the following wireless settings on the router
    ssid  - any non-linksys name
    radio band - wide
    n-channel - 9
    standard channel - 11
also ensure that the router has the latest firmware on it ..

  • Wireless repeater using wrt54g and wap54g

i am having problems connecting my wrt54g and wap54g as wireless repeater. my setup is as follows: 1. wrt54g (192.168.1.10) is connected to a dsl provider modem/router (192.168.1.1) (dhcp server). With this setup i do not have any problems connecting my wired pc and laptop to the network. 2. on my 2nd floor the signal is faint thus i need to extend the wireless signal. 3. i have a wap54g (192.168.1.12) that i would like to repeat the signal of the wrt54g. 4. i tried the guide from the website but it was general thus there are some settings (recommended) that are missing. questions: 1. does the 2 wireless ap need to have the same SSID, channel and wep settings? 2. what should be the gateway for the wap54g? 192.168.1.1? 3. when using wifi, would i see 2 access point? or a single 1 and whoever is nearer? 4. does the wrt54g need to be a dhcp server? or the 192.168.1.1 can do that. 5. does my ideal setup be 2 AP and not 1 wireless router/ap and 1 ap? 6. can the wrt54g use wireless distribution mesh? 7. i cannot see my wrt54g from the firware downloads, mine is v7 and there are only v6 and v8? am from asia and this might be an asian version? any help would be appreciated.

what i did was the following: 1. enable wap54g as a wireless client to look for the main ssid. 2. copy the mac address to the option for wireless repeater. 3. i can now use the wap54g as a repeater. when i shut down everything and turn it on, i cannot again hook up. again, i have to do the steps above for the wap54g to act as a repeater. any idea on what the problem is? i am sure that what i am putting on the mac address is correct. even when i shut down and turn on all router and accesspoints. the connection seems lost.

  • I just bought a router WRT54G and a Compact wireless-G

i just bought a router WRT54G and a  Compact wireless-G and by the time to connect them it seems that both things work correctly but there are two icons that show if u are connect to the internet, so here is the problem one icon says that my connection is excellent, but the other ones says that my connectivity is limited or there is not connectivity at all.
What should i do to fix that problem i've tried everything i think but nothing happened?

Is the "limited connectivity" icon the icon for your ethernet card (which presumably is not plugged in, and therefore has no connectivity) ?  If so, then this icon is reporting its connection correctly.  You do not need to fix it.

    - grub cannot detect correct bios boot order.
It may happen that hd(x,x) entries are not correct,
thus first reboot may not work.
Reason: grub cannot detect bios boot order.
Fix: Either change bios boot order or change menu.lst to correct entries
      after successful boot.
This cannot be fixed it's a restriction in grub!
Further documentation can be found on-disk and on the wiki.
    Have fun!

Could you include dhclient in the next iteration of the boot image?
I'm testing the boot image in virtualbox and dhcpcd can't get a proper configuration using dhcp, everything is correct except the dns servers.
I believe this may be due to a change (or bug) in vbox but what is curious is that dhclient can get everything right. I've seen threads where other people report having problems with dhcpcd and dhclient working properly (with physical machines I believe). dhclient would be there only as a fallback and would need to be invoked from the command line so it doesn't force any change in the setup scheme.

  • Torrent Problems

I have just done a fresh install trying to fix this problem but that doesn't seem to be the cause.
No matter which torrent client I use, Vuze, transmission , utorrent, etc
I set global upload and download values but they are ignored.
I can see this by using istats menu, but more importantly through the tomato firmware on my router which confirms it. When I set a speed limit in any of the programs the program makes it look like it is obeying the speed limits but with no other programs opened prior the system uses 0 to .2k up and down. only with a torrent program open it goes well above these limits maxing out both my upstream and downstream bandwidth. I heard this problem may also leak into other programs as well, world of warcraft etc... anyone have a fix?
    Thanks!

I have no idea about what part of the OS it is, I know it started with snow leopard. I even did a clean install with no programs running besides istats menu, which shows me how much bandwidth is going in and out. My first thought was that istats menu was wrong, then i tried istats pro widget with same results, and then finally going into router and seeing it for myself, I did this by classifying all traffic from my mac address as high priority and leaving only myself plugged into router, it showed the same results as istats menu. My provider shaping traffic? They have never done it, I use roadrunner by time warner, and this problem only appeared w/ snow leopard so it would be too much of a coincidence and a few others have this problem.
If I'm not using bittorrent I have 0 system problems as far as I can tell, web-browsing, mail, ventrilo, and video games all run blazing fast as ever.
Only when bittorrent is used, no matter the client, and no matter the global upload/download limit, the connection gets maxed out and it slows down all other systems on the network as well. In the torrent client it will show the download/upload speed on each individual torrent as obeying the download/upload rate. IE, I set global upload to 20k/sec, in bittorrent client it shows upload going between 19.5-20k/sec and it looks as if it's working. istats menu, shows 70-85k being uploaded/leaving my computer (my connection is maxed out at 70k, so this is the normal throttling behavior). I log into router and it confirms that I am sending out 70-85k.
The system runs perfectly fine unless a torrent client is open at which point all the bandwidth is used, I'm not sure if the client is using it all (which I doubt because all the clients show the appropriate speed cap and when looking at seed ratio it appears to move different if you adjust it) so when the torrent client is open, all this extra upload is coming from somewhere, I have no idea where though.

  • WRVS4400N and WPC4400N Problems

This is part rant and part problem report.I don't know who's listening, maybe someone who knows more than I do.
Let me preface this by telling you I am a reseller of Linksys products and a Linksys Partner. I have had pretty good experience with the products. I am currently installing several of their products a week. I've been doing IT support for over 12 years. I have configured a lot of routers.
So I think why not treat myself to a top of the line router and test out 802.11N at the same time.
    Here is the setup:
Dell D520 with fresh reload of WinXP SP2
    Linksys WRV4400N
    Linksys WPC4400N
First problem was I installed the card with the CDROM it shipped with. Big mistake. The driver and utility would not connect when WPA was configured. Ok my mistake, always download the latest drivers.
Second problem was my HP2600n that is connected to the router was unable to get print jobs. It was connected on the LAN, could ping but print jobs would fail, more on this later.
Third problem is that my wife could no longer get connected to her corporate VPN over this router. They use a Cisco VPN solution. Yes, VPN passthrough is enabled. Hey it  worked fine on my WRT54G! She has a dell D630 with an Intel Pro 2200 WLAN card. It worked PERFECT with the WRT54G.
Fourth problem is the wireless connection would periodically disconnect.
Fifth problem is that I pulled the WRVS4400N and reinstalled the WRT54G and now the Linksys WPC4400N has a fluctuating signal level. The router is in the next room and with my build in Dell WLAN card the signal stays strong.
Yes, I upgraded the firmware on the router to the latest version.
IN regard to problem number two, it turns out the WRVS4400N uses 192.168.1.3 for the WLAN interface. That was the same IP I had on my printer. OK, now you all know that you need to resever 192.168.1.3 on your LAN if you use a WRVS4400N
IN regard to number three, no amount of tinkering allowed the Cisco VPN client to connect. I changed MTU size, turned off the firewall, added port triggers, you name it. Nothing worked but replacing the router. Now this is just supposed to work. I should not need to be a network engineer to make a WRVS4400N work. VPN's are supposed to pass through!!!
In regard to number 4, periodic dropping of Wireless, connection, I tried going to channel 1, even removing wireless security. Nothing seems to work except revert to the Dell WLAN card. This issue was seen on the WRVS4400N and the WRT54G. Acutally worse on the WRT54G and WPC4400N combination. I also noticed my Dell card was picking up about 10 WLAN's in my neighbor hood and the Linkys only 2.
So there is a special support phone number for partners. I waited for 55 minutes on hold and did not get an answer.
    One Disapointed Linksys Reseller

Fourth problem is the wireless connection would periodically disconnect.
In regard to number 4, periodic dropping of Wireless, connection, I tried going to channel 1, even removing wireless security.
    ---- end quote ----
I have a WPC4400N PCMCIA card, and I am having this same exact problem too. I am using drivers 1.0.2.5, which also carries the designation of "Lite" - what the heck is up with "Lite" anyway? I want the full blown drivers!
Anyway, I can't seem to stay connected for too long, even though my router (ALSO a Linksys product, a WRT350N, with updated Linksys firmware 1.03.7) is only 4 feet away, if that.
My wireless card (the WPC4400N) keeps dropping connection, even if the router is right next to it! And of course, when I had my wireless router all the way across my apartment (roughly 20 feet) it would keep doing the same thing too, kept disconnecting periodically! Any kind of adjustment to driver parameters in my network card settings would just simply not help it at all, and I don't know what the problem is!
    Can anyone please help?
My brother is a CISCO C.C.I.E. (Linksys is owned by Cisco), and I have yet to ask his help, but somehow I doubt even he could help me with this one.
I should not have to change my channel #, nor my security method, in order to keep a connection, especially when it has problems while the PCMCIA network card is being only 3-4 feet away from the router!!

  • Wrt54g strange signal problem

I have a new wrt54g and I have a strange signal problem. When I am in the house close to the router I only have a good signal (3 bars) but when I take the notebook outside or all the way in the back bedroom I have a excellent signal (5 bars). I am thinking that something in the house might be interfereing with the signal but I have tried changing the channel and still have only 3 bars when in the house, and 6 bars when I take the notebook outside or to the back bedroom. I am using wap but I tried disabling it and still only 3 bars when around the router.
Any thoughts, and thanks in advance.

I tried it all but still the same but I did find this, when I take then computer in the back of the house or outside the signal goes up to excellent and stays there even if i take it back in the front of the house where I previously only had a good signal. But the only way to get a excellent signal is to take it far off from the router but once it does get a excellent signal it will stay there even when I take back around the router, crazy I know.
    Any more advise or thoughts?

  • WRT54G and IP Address of Connected Devices

An HP laser printer and a DLink network drive are among the various devices connected to my network via a WRT54G and an eight port switch. Every now and then the IP addresses for these two devices change. With respect to the printer, this means I cannot depend on reliably printing something and  I periodically have to delete the printer and reinstalli it on the various computers. This also presents a problem with the DLink drive because when the address changes the mapping of it as a lettered drive on each computer is no longer valid.
How can I fix the IP addresses of these network devices so it does not change?

Set static IP addresses on the devices. You can't change it on the WRT.
(unless your WRT54G has a firmware which has a dhcp reservation function in the web interface, but think the WRT54G is too old for that. For that it would be helpful to know which model & version you have exactly as printed on the label underneath the router and which firmware version you are running as shown in the web interface).

  • WRT54G and multiple wireless machine (including gaming)

    Hi all,
I had bought (as you can clearly see in the subject ) a WRT54G, as I wanted one to play online with the Wii and Playstation 3 (Mario Kart and Battlefield: Bad Company, in case you're interested ).
I also bought a Laptop (I was on a roll ), with <drum rolls> Wireless Support (duh) ... I was thinking though, comparing it to the Wireless-N series ... will I have any problems in games? Or will I have performance decreases? When someone is browsing and downloading via the laptop, and another person is playing a game ... will that affect each other?
What I mean to say, if you want something like this router for doing this stuff, is it a good router, or just acceptable? Will an N-router be a WAY better choice?
I still have a problem setting it up too, but that's a different issue. Sad isn't it ... starting CCIP, and having problems setting up a home wireless router .
    Ciao,
    Marco

I know a wireless N router can do the same.
What I mean is, is it reliable for online gaming? I have this WRT54G router, and I want to use it for gaming and a normal use of a laptop, but who knows, maybe also streaming videos (I tend to watch game and movie trailers). For me that's just "normal" use, I don't plan to download huge load of data with this connection, therefor I got a wired connection. And even if I had only a laptop, I'd connect it to a Ethernet port directly on the router.
I was playing Battlefield: Bad Company yesterday on the PS3, and I got sort of a laggie connection. With these console gaming, it's not usual it seems to connect to a server you want to connect to, but you're just connected to one. I have no idea what the ping response to this server is, and I can't see any troubleshooting methods on it either.
To be clear, for this use, and next year we'll be moving to a new house with concrete walls / floors, now it's wood ... what is best to do, to ditch the WRT54G and get a 160N ? Especially the gaming, I just don't want to get used to laggy gaming.
