WRT54G, Firmware Version: 8.00.2, Stops routing after a day, requires a quick 10-15 second power cyc... work properly for a day or so before powering down again….
I was using for years the BEFW11S4 Model without any issues before it finally failed. Due to loyalty, I went out over a month ago to purchase the current model. The problems did not pop-up until month of December… The issue had me thinking at first was the internet connection…
Any advice on dealing with this issue… Is it a Software and/or Hardware? It appears to be a software related condition…
For those other WRT54G users that appear to be having similar issues, regardless of the firmware, it would appear we all seem to be facing the same condition of resolving the issue after a power cycle…
Is there anyone out there that has already resolved this issue (e.g. Configuration changes)? Does anyone have input that Linksys is actively working on this issue?
Although I am sure we will find a solution, having to cycle the power is a bit disappointing since my older model had no such flaws with my current internet connection…
Thanks for the support out there….

If you have an Intel wireless card you can try this.  I came across this link on the forum a days ago and it seems to help.  The problem is that my problem was much more intermittent than some people are experiencing.  It mainly seemed to appear when undocked the computer or if there was a power outage during the day.  I would be interested to see if it works for you or if I'm just chasing my tail.  I've seen other suggestions for changing the thresholds in the router which may be related.

  • WRT54G firmware failure leaving no access to router config

I have a WRT54G router.  Running Vista SP2 64-bit on a laptop wired to router.  When I first tried to upgrade the firmware I was connected wirelessly.  (I know, please just think it but don't type it)  During the upgrade the internet connection disconnected and the upgrade failed.  I am connecting right now wirelessly using someones unsecure network.  I attempted to upgrade the firmware to 8.00.7.  Since then I am unable to access the router config using IP 192.168.1.1.  I have read as many posts as I can handle.  I have checked and that is the IP showing in Vista, (Network & Sharing, view status, properties) however I cannot ping that IP.  It times out every time.  I have done all the resets (10 seconds and up to 1 minute) on the router and power cycle etc.  Nothing.  I downloaded the firmware utility and I get an error message everytime that it is unable to get responses from the server.  I have tried my password, which I think is gone due to all the resets, and am using admin as the password.  I have disabled my firewall.  I do have Network Magic and when I checked control internet access it says I am able to do so.  Is there a way to disable Network Magic?  Can that be the issue?  When all this started I had my own internet connetion.  I'm in the process of moving so I have disconnected my internet service.  Since I'm only trying to connect to the router locally, do I really need to have a live internet connection?  Please, HELP!  I don't want to buy a new router.  This one has been very reliable.  If I do have to buy something new, can you recommend something just as reliable.
There have been 2 or 3 times where it looked as though I was going to be able to connect to config interface and the firsrt basic screen loads with minimal data and no clickable links to allow me to change screens.  The "&" from one of the links that is supposed to appear but does not,  is the only thing that appears in that area and if I click it, I either get a error from IE that it cannot connect, or, it takes me to the Ports screen with minimal data and I cannot progress from there.  In the top right corner of the screen, it does show the firmware version is 8.00.7.  ?????
P.S.  Obviously, I'm not very computer savvy so excuse me if I'm missing the obvious.

  • Regarding a WRT54G: Firmware and trouble with Vista

    Hey all,
First of all, this is my first post here on this board so please don't have me assassinated if I skipped some board rules/policy. I'm trying to find a solution to my problem a.s.a.p.
My first question is: what's up with the firmware versions and my router's modelname? When I bought the router I got it in a box saying WRT54G (v1.1) with firmware version 4.30.7. As a first step getting the problem described below solved, I downloaded the latest Linksys  firmware for a WRT54G v1.1 from this website. After the firmware update my router now seems to be known as a WRT54GL and next to that my firmware version number didn't increase, it deacreased to 4.21.1. I don't know about you guys but this doesn't seem logical to me. Any explanations? Also the firmware's date seems to be somewhere back in 2006, isn't this a bit outdated for 'latest' software?
Now onto the next subject: the fact that my Acer notebook keeps losing the wireless signal since Vista. The wireless connection between the router and my notebook has always worked very fast and flawlessly when I ran XP SP2. However, as soon as I install Vista, something odd happens. With the same drivers for my wireless chipset (they're for both XP and Vista) either my notebook keeps losing the wireless signal or the router has trouble providing my Vista notebook with a steady signal. For 30 to 45 minutes I seem to have a steady signal with 5 blocks filled on Windows' signal'O'meter and then suddenly I get disconnected from my router for like 10 seconds to 1 minute. At first it says my connection turned from "local and internet" to "local only" and after a few seconds the entire signal is dead and the wireless tray icon gets covered by that little yellow triangle. Without interfering it'll take up to a minute at most and the connection will be back as it was before. However, this minute is just enough to mess up skype sessions, downloads, streams, you name it. To be honest, I haven't got the faintest idea what might cause this. Does anyone of you have?
    N.b.
    - I think I've noticed the issue occuring more frequent during high bandwidth usage like downloading with 2.5 to 3 MB/s but I'm not very sure about that.
    - My notebook hasn't moved an inch over the past years and there are no other devices added in my house that might interfere with the signal.
    - I've tried all the eleven channels.
    - I've set up a dualboot system on my notebook with XP SP2 and guess what, problem is gone when I use XP SP2 again.
    - I'm using an Atheros AR500G wireless adapter.
    - I'm only using Acer's drivers for the wireless adapter, not their useless resources consuming utility that "manages my wireless settings". Which seem to be Acer's words for slowing sh1t down a lot!
    - I'm using exactly the same internet security software with Vista as with XP SP2. Turning this software off won't help in any way.
    Any help is much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    G.

First thing which you can check is the Model number of your Router. Flip the router upside down and below you will find the Model number of your Router and version number. Make sure it is WRT54G or WRT54GL. As you have mentioned that previously the firmware on your Router was 4.30.7, Basically that's the Firmware version of WRT54GL Router.
Since you have already upgraded the firmware on your Router, Have you resetted your Router and re-configured all the settings back on your Router? If not then you can do it now.
While Configuring the settings on your Router you need to change the Wireless Channel to 11.
Now you can try to connect to your Wireless Network and check if you are able to go Online.
The model on the router itself says WRT54G.
I've already resetted and reconfigured the router several times, doesn't help. Also tried all the 11 channels.
And yes, I am able to go online but the problem described in my first post still exists. I don't see why switching channels would solve it anyway since it's clearly a problem caused by the router in combination with Vista, it's not signal strength related. But like I said, I tried all the channels anyway.
Is it possible for a Linksys employee to take a look at this topic? Are there some known issues with a WRT54G and Vista and/or an Atheros AR5005G chipset? Is my hardware and software supported by the WRT54G at all?

  • Should I update my WRT54GS firmware?

I have a WRT54GS V1.1 router. I haven't updated the firmware since I bought the router in December, 2004. It is currently at version 3.37.2 of the firmware. The latest version is 4.71.1.
    Should I risk a download?
I'm trying to get my daughter's new notebook to work off the router. We haven't tried everything, but I'm wondering if I need to update the firmware. It always seems that updating or upgrading software causes more problems than it solves.

If you are not having problems with that yet, don't... it's like a last resort thing...

  • WRT54G firmware interrupted

    Hi,
Ever since I bought this router (WRT54G wireless G broadband router) it's been nothing but trouble. For months it was constant disconnects, changed channels and possibly every alternative and setting to try and figure out How to fix it. Latest settings I changed made it so it doesn't disconnect as much but it makes EVERYthing lag, web pages take forever to load and can't even stream a video on youtube. This will go on for hours until finally it disconnects and it works for a little while then goes back to it's old laggy self again.
So today I got a new modem, I connected 2 computers wired to the router, connected the internet and it worked fine. But the two computers who are on wireless cards wouldn't connect. My brother decided to reinstall the router. Didn't do anything. He decided to do a firmware update (I didn't know he was going to) and as he was updating my dog walked by and knocked the cord out of the computer so it got interrupted. Now the router won't even connect wired to any computer. Is there any way to even fix this?
I bought the router in December

Hi, I tried to update my firmware as I had my connection constantly on and off every 1 minute. While upgrading the firmware, the process was interrupted because I lost internet connection. It expressly says that the process must not be interrupted but unfotunatelly it happened. Since then I have not been able to connect to the router, nor have any connectivity using the Router. I tried resetting the router without any luck. Could someone help me out solving this problem?
    Thanks in advance

  • Can't update WRT54GS firmware!

    I have a WRT54GS v5.1 with firmware 1.50.5
When I try to upgrade to firmware version 1.52.0 I browse, select the .bin file and click upgrade. The loading bar reaches about 3/4 full, then starts again and reaches about 1/4. Then I get "The connection was reset". I navigate to the admin page again, and the firmware version is unchanged. Any ideas what to try?

In case anyone else has this problem i was able to update the firmware by resetting factory defaults first.

  • WRT54GS firmware issues

    Hello all,
I have a befsr41 now for about 6 years and it has been great.  I recently purchased a WRT54GS to replace it, so that I can have another wireless access point, along with TZO.
I installed the 54GS and manually copied all of my port forwards from the BEFSR41.  Things seemed to work.  I was on firmware 1.50.6.  I upgraded to the 1.52.0 and suddenly all of my port forwarding stopped working.
Not exactly sure what to do, so I stuck my BEFSR41 back in and everything went back to normal again.
Any sugestions, other than backrev?  I upgraded because I did have issue getting an IP address from my provider.

    Nopers, did not work.
I did get some aftermarket firmware to load on my router that seems to work much better than the Cisco/linksys firmware.  .
    Thanks for the help anyway.

  • WRT54G Firmware 1.02.6 Release Notes

I was wondering if anyone had the release notes for this firmware? I am curious as to what bugs/fixes are addressed in this version.
    Thanks!

I guess there are no release notes for WRT54G v5/6 router's...You have to wait until they put the Release notes on their website...

You don't open it.  You upload it from the Upgrade tab in the routers UI.

  • WRT54G firmware Mac DHCP conflict

I updated my WRT54G version 6 to firmware version 1.01.0 and (after 2 days when things worked fine) lost the ability for any of my 3 Mac computers (intel iMac and pismo powerbook) to get an IP address either by wired connection or wireless connection to the router. My Windows laptop connected just fine by wired and wireless connections. The Macs could see the router if manually set to IP 192.168.1.50, but did not get an IP address if set to DHCP. No amount of resetting router, modem and computers helped. I reflashed 1.01.0 using the PC but that did not help. I flashed back to firmware 1.00.9 and immediately got back wired and wireless connections with all of the Macs. There are at least three other reports of people solving exactly the same problem posted in the Apple discussion boards with other Mac models.

  • Tsclient drive redirection fails after wrt54g firmware update

Recently updated firmware on WRT54g wireless router. Ever since am unable to redirect drives in rdp client session to 2003TS. The drives show up as "system folder" on the server, no drive letters visible, not accessible.
This happens with all PC's on my home network. If I shut down my wireless router and poach a neighbors connection using my laptop the drive redirection works as before.
    Any ideas?

Are you able to access the drive before upgrading the firmware ?
If yes, reset the router as it is recommended by Linksys that you should reset and reconfigure the router after resetting .
Press and hold the reset for 30 seconds .
Power cycle the router and modem .
Open the setup page of the router and configure it again .

The IP address is not pingeable.
Cisco does not give another tool to recover it?
Do the upgrade via tftp again. Before doing it again do the following first:
Reset the router. Push and hold the reset button for 1 minute. After a minute, do not release the reset button from being pressed. Continue holding it and unplug the router's power cord for 20 seconds. After 20 seconds connect the power adapter to the router again while still pressing the reset button. When the adapter is plug in, wait for another 10 seconds and release the button. Ping the ip address of the router  192.168.1.1 using the command prompt.(remember the computer should be hardwired to the router and should be DHCP enabled).
    If getting replies:
    1. Set static IP, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway on the computer: IP: 192.168.1.10 DG: 192.168.1.1 SM :  255.255.255.0.
2: Force the card to 10 mbps half.
    3: Perform tftp.
    If getting rto:
    1. Set static IP, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway on the computer: IP: 192.168.1.10 DG: 192.168.1.1 SM :  255.255.255.0.
2: Force the card to 10 mbps half.
    3. Ping the router again and if you are getting replies already, then do the tftp. If not, you can try the steps again using another computer. If using another computer is not going to work then the router might be defective already.

  • WRT54G Firmware version problem

hello people i gotta problem and if you can please help me...
    I have a WRT54G wireless router v7.2.00 (defoult firmware)
in here last firmware is 8.2
    http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/WRT54G/download
i download this file, but can't install...
    then i find this...
    http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-eu/support/routers/WRT54G/download
in here last version is v7.2
    **bleep**?!
now can you tall me, can i  upgrade v7.2.01 to v8 or v8.2?

From what I’ve remembered, I don’t think there’s a v7.2 for WRT54G. I do know though that WRT54GS has v7.2. If I were you, check the FCC ID number because you will be able to determine the correct version there. Loading a firmware from a different version might damage the router so it is not advisable to proceed with that firmware.

  • WRT54GS firmware update

    Hi
I just updated my WRT54GS v2.1 from firmware v4.50.6 to v4.71.4 (yes, I'm not what they call the most careful network admin in my house), and I noticed 2 slight changes, I'd like you to confirm:
    1) On Setup tab, Basic setup page, I remember from previous version what was specified on Router name would be shown on "Connect to 192.168.1.1" login window, e.g. "The server 192.168.1.1 in ROUTERNAME requires a user name and password". After firmware update , it shows WRT54GS, ignoring what's I specified in Router name field. Is it same to you?
    2) On Status tab, Router page, it says "Current time: Not available". Help says "This shows the time, as you set on the Setup Tab". Setup tab only shows time zone setup though... I don't recall if it was available there in previous firmware version, but where is the clock adjust function?
    Thank you!

After upgrading the firmware on the router, it is recommended that you should reset the router and reconfigure it. Press and hold the reset button on the router for 30 seconds. Release the reset button and wait for 30 seconds. Power cycle the router and reconfigure it.
On the setup tab, you will find the Time settings.
