WRT54GS help?

My friends and I got a WRT54GS router for our apartment a couple of months ago. One of my friends and myself can connect to the router with no problems, but the other two are having trouble. They have been connected before, but now when they try to connect it says that they are connected to the network but when they open the internet browser it just says page cannot be found. We've tried resetting the router multiple times and changed the network security. Only when we have the security completely turned off can they access the router with no problems, but when I turn on security they can't access the internet. When they try to repair their connection, it brings up a message that says their IP address couldn't be renewed. Any ideas/solutions?

First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
What encryption are you using?  WEP?  WPA?  WPA2?
If you are using Windows XP, and you are using WPA2  (= WPA with AES), then you need to upgrade to SP3.   SP2 will not do WPA2 properly.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys".  Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use.  Delete your current network (this will remove any old settings).  Reboot computer.  Return to "Preferred Networks" and re-enter your current network info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".  Reboot computer.  You should connect automatically to the router (this may take up to 2 minutes).  If you still have trouble, temporarily turn off your computer's software firewall, including Windows Firewall, and see if that helps.
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.

  • WRT54G help - Web pages not loading

I'm running a WRT54G v8.2 to link up my Intel Core Duo iMac (wired), and Xbox360 and iPhone (wireless.) Everything was working great until this morning when certain sites stopped loading or fully loading. (Have made no changes to any settings on the router or the computer.) Gmail and other simple sites are OK - but many other sites (including message boards and FedEx) don't work in any browser. I'm getting the same problem surfing the web on my phone - it's actually faster (and more reliable) to bypass my wireless network and just use my AT&T Edge. Xbox connects - but I haven't tried using it to see how fast the connection is. I downloaded the latest firmware and installed that - didn't seem to help much if at all. I've tried restarting my modem and router - and the problem seems to get better if I remove the router from the equation. Any bright ideas are appreciated - I'm an amateur at best when it comes to this stuff.

Or else ...change the MTU size to 1300 & click save settings. ..

  • Can't connect to internet after updating new Firmware wrt54g Help please!

So i just updated my firmware on my wrt54g ver 2 router, went through all the steps it updated successfully after that i hit the reset button and unplugged the router as tehe online instructions said to. Now i can't connect to the interent at all with either of my two wired computers or through the wireless. All the lights on the front of the router are on like the power, internet, and wireless connectivity. Also the the two WAN ports my computers are connected to in the router the lights are on and it's recognising them. But I can't connect to the internet or even see the router on my network settings. Somone suggested to reconfigure the router but when i go to set up new connection my computer doesn't detect the router and also i cant connect to the router using the ip address 192.168.1.1/ since there is no internet connection. Is there a way to get to the router options or a way to revert it to its old firmware. Any help would be much appreciated. I should after updating the firmare the power button is contantly blinking.

I am having the exact same problem..  I have the same router and same version as well.. I followed the directions and upgraded the firmware. it said update successfull and then I reset it and power cycled it to find that my network no longer works and I cannot access the router..I've looked through all the troubleshooting guides and they do not help..  It says if you can't access the web based page then to use the TFTP  utility to re-flash the router’s firmware but it seems it cannot make a connection to the router..  I've tried to ping it like it says to in the TFTP guide but it does not seem to be able to make a connection to the router..  I tried to access Management Mode to recover the router and resume the loading of the firmware upgrade but I can't get the Management Mode Firmware Upgrade page to open as well..  So what gives?  I followed the directions  but the only thing I seemed to accomplish was to brick my router..   Does anyone have a clue on how to go about fixing this problem?   Any help is appreciated..

  • WRT54G Help Online games

Ok, I have 2 computers that I'm splitting the internet connection to wired and have the wireless for my game systems (which I am not even using atm). The issue that I'm having is I play online games where latency can cause trouble. When I first start up WoW I have like 100ms latency. It slowly climbs to an unplayable 1800ms latency. Thing is, it's not consistent, meaning it happens in spikes like every minute or so. When I'm connected to just the modem I've got a cool 75ms latency that spikes to maybe 250ms latency during primetime. I upgraded the firmware on the router and that didn't do anything. Any help?

http://www.pctools.com/mirror/sdasetup.exe Use that link run an intelliscan of your computer after getting the initial updates. The problems you are describing sound to me like your router is fine, but that you may have some malware that is probably getting past your current security. If you do find things infected on your computer I would recommend registering that and then removing whatever it is you are using as it currently is probably not doing the job when it comes to protecting your PC.

I would be very grateful if you can help me mainly why I need this fixed is because I cannot portfoward with this error

Open the setup page of the router.
On the setup page you will find Domain name. What do you have in Domain name?
Host Name and Domain Name: These fields allow you to supply a host and domain name for the Router. Some ISPs, usually cable ISPs, require these names as identification. You may have to check with your ISP to see if your broadband Internet service has been configured with a host and domain name. In most cases, leaving these fields blank will work.
What error message do you get when you try to forward the port on the router?

  • WRT54G Help I'm going mad

I have 2 computers, one of which I just purchased and it has windows vista. The other is connected to a cable modem and have the WRT54G hooked up to it. I'm trying to setup my new computer for the internet and am having a lot of difficulty. OK, so  computed 1 (with the cable modem and wireless router hooked up) works fine. I plugged in the wireless adapter into computer 2 (new one with vista) and followed the on screen instructions. It can not find a driver. What am I doing wrong here. I thought no updated were required and this device was compatable with vista?  Please help me.

also, some cds may have problems with vista, so i suggest you put in the cd, and x out of the pop up installation. Then plug in the adapter. Your computer should ask you if u want to install the new hardware, click yes, and then vista will search the cd for what it needs and intall that. Otherwise you may get an operating system error during install and it wont install.

  • Wireless clients unable to access internet on new WRT54G - Help!

I have multiple wireless clients that cannot access the internet. They all get valid IP addressing. I can ping the router. But I can't access anything on the internet. I just setup this router and I do this sort of stuff for a living and I give up. It shouldn't be this difficult. Two of the clients are Vista and the other is XP. Again, the connection to the router is perfect. I just can't access anything beyond the router. The single wired client works fine. Help!

Thanks... I've tried that. All of these hosts were actually working just fine with my old DLink router, but that router died over the weekend, so I replaced it with the Linksys. For the life of me, I can't see any reason why these hosts can't route out to the internet.

  • WRT54G help needed

I'm so not a tech person but here goes:
I just bought a WRT54G router and an HP Notebook with Vista. The router is connected to my DSL modem correctly and I can see the connection, but I can't connect to the internet. I have done the MAC clone thing, the PPPoE thing and the block anonymous thing.
I worked last night. But I attempt to secure my router and now nothing. I can't even connect to the IP address 192.168.1.1 or the 192.168.2.1. I have reset and reset and reset my router and modem. Any suggestions?

You wont be able to access it because the vista laptop is not associated with the router since you enable security on the router. the laptop needs to be associated with the changes.
    Try these:
    - start > control panel
    - switch to classic view > network and sharing center.
    - manage wireless networks > highlight the lists of network > remove.
    - network sharing center > connect to a network.
    - click refresh (the button on the right that has the 2 arrows).
    - highlight the name of your network > connect.
    - type the password (key#1 on the setup page of the router.
    - try connecting to the internet if it says there connected.
If you forgot the password, just connect the computer directly to the router using an ethernet cable and just disable the wireless security.

  • WRT54G help!

Hello Linksys forums! I've been having extreme troubles with the aforementioned router model and I've called Verizon Technical Support and spoke with a Linksys tech person but to no avail. The situation: My Vista computer that has a DSL modem which is connected to the router works fine (web pages and any internet related activities are able to be done) and a second computer running XP connects fine to the router and can surf the web as well. The part that strikes me as odd and extremely irritating is that my iPhone detects the router, can connect to it, but cannot access the internet. This is case with my Xbox 360 as well.
I have followed some instructions here that tell me to put the router into Automatic Configuration - DHCP mode and my status page shows:
IP Address: 192.168.1.45          Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

I request help on connecting these devices to the router successfully! In the Vista "Network and Sharing Center" tab, it points to a DNS problem...?

I have AT&T DSL and the modem is a 2Wire.  I have a Linksys router downline from the modem and has been working fine until I lost power the other day.  Now the linksys can't see the internet.  All the laptops in my house say they are connect to the linksys, but the linksys can't get past the 2wire.  Help please.

Before you got the router, how did you get online on the 2wire? Did you need a username/password or were you online right away?
The box said windows xp or better... So I installed Linux!

  • WRT54G - Help, intermittent stopping

Okay for about 4 months now my router will just stop working during periods of inactivity.  I have 2 PCs hardwired (1 XP, 1 ME) a Wii, a TIVO connected wirelessly and anothe XP Laptop wirelessly occasionaly.
So what happens is I will wake up, go use the wired connection and get the site not found message.  I then have to go down to the router and actually shut off the power, then once it powers back up do a hard reset of the router.  I won't reset until I cycle the power.  Once I do that I go back in restore my settings (correct time, WEP on , G-only) and go back to using it.  It works I'm just tired of doing it.  Do I need a new router?

Go to website linksysbycisco.com/downloads.........insert model no of your router in serach tab......select proper version of your router........download the firmware file......save that file on desktop.
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device: -Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 Leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed". Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
You can do this Settings your Router so you should face any Problem. When you logged in to Linksys Router Setup Page... Change the MTU Size to 1365 it will right Below the SetupTab.
Do this wireless settings : -Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bits.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network.
    Click on Advanced Wireless-
settings>>Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation...
Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect..

  • WRT54G Not Supported By LELA...help needed

Alright, roughly 2 days ago I hooked up this router (WRT54G) to the computer, and then later that day hooked up a laptop by wireless signal.  These first couple of days were fine, but last night while on my laptop searching the web, I began to lose a signal every few minutes for roughly 30-45 seconds.  After becoming annoyed, I went to check out my network by using LELA.  However, instead of the screen I expected (showing your network diagram), I was told that I was using a new router.
Obviously, I hadn't changed the router so I was confused and decided to update, which was the option it gave me and because cancelling out wasn't possible.  However, it didn't work.  After going through the setup, which was essentially just like the original setup for the router, I got to the last step and it said the LELA didn't support the router, as though I was using one from another computer or something.
My dad said he had installed an Internet Explorer update and it had prompt him to change settings, and he had, but nothing that he thought would affect it.  Also, I did a system restore to a point just shortly after it was originally installed, and at a time I knew it had been working, but alas that didn't work either.
I've searched on google and all over these forums for some help, but I've found nothing that gives me good answers.  I saw somewhere to roll back my firmware, but I don't know how, as it won't let me connect to the internet through the router, and if I unplug the router and bypass the router for my internet then I can access the web, but obviously not the router.  I'm stumped, and wondering if maybe all I need to do is a power cycle or roll back my firmware.  Please, answers would be helpful.  Thank you
EDIT:  Also, I'm not sure where to find what version I have or what firmware I have.  I just know my model number, and that I can get to my settings by typing in the IP of the router in IE address bar.  I had enough knowledge to get it going, but its been very frustrating in fixing the problems.

Oh, and a couple more things.  Why did a system restore not work, shouldn't this technical reset the system back to a time when it was working?  Or, does firmware not change?  I suppose, I'm kind of a newb to the whole router thing, and to be really honest, we just barely changed to high speed internet the day before I bought the router.  The high speed modem was professionally installed.  I know for a fact I had it hooked up right, I mean it didnt seem too confusing and plus it was working great for a short time.  Thanks.
EDIT:  You know, now that I've done so much searching for answers, I've found that lots of people are having this problem, but yet, I'm having a hard time finding answers.  So you would think Linksys might fix this problem in a firmware update, and yet the only valid solution I have found is to go back to the previous firmware.  Yet, I don't know how to do that, besides I'm at school right now, so yeah thank you for the help in advance.
