WRT54GS Looses Connection.....

I have read the other threads about a similar problem, but the problem i am having is slightly different
My wireless router is attached to a cable modem, and broadcasts into my house on a secured connection. I have changed the network name from linksys to my own name.
My laptop always connects to my network without exception, and ignores the other 5+ wireless connections in the area, BUT there is one connection that when it is turned on, my computer insists on joining that unsecured network, and drops my connection.
The wired connection still works, so i can just switch between the two, although this kind of defeats the object of awireless router!
I have changed the channels, configured XP to ignore other networks but still the connection is dropped.
What do i need to do to ensure my laptop ignores the other conenction when it is turned on, and remains connected to my network at all times?
thanks and best regards
Chris
just to confirm, i have NOT updated any firmware in the router, and the router has been installed and working correctly for about 6-9 months now, and the problem has only recently started....: smileymad:

Open the network connections control panel. Select your wireless connection and right click on it. Open the properties. Click on the wireless network tab. Verify that the top check box is set, i.e. Windows configures the wireless. Also verify that in the list of preferred networks there is no network listed that you do not want to connect to.
Next press the Advanced button and verify that you only connect to access points and also that you do not connect automatically to non-preferred networks.

  • WRT54G, looses connection to internet..

Hello, i have a problem wich i dont know if it is because of my router or my modem. I got ADSL. So i need your help how i can figure out what this depends on, what happens is that i loose connection quite often in like 30 seconds, then it works again.

Disconnect your router out of the equation and connect a computer straight to your modem, see if you loose the internet connection from your modem as well...
Do you loose the internet connection just on one computer or multiple computer's ?
Do you loose the Internet Connection on wired computer's or wireless computer's or both ?

  • WRT54G looses connection

    I have a WRT54G connected to a Netgear DG632 ADSL modem.
I have frequent dropout problems where the router drops the modem connection and also freezes my pc. I am not sure if I have an IP address clash or something like that.
My modem is set to 192.168.0.1 and logs on to my ISP (V21) ok. My router is set to 192.168.2.1 with DHCP enabled. Both modem and router run stand-alone (i.e not directly connected to a pc). All 3 pcs in my network are connected via wireless and exhibit the same problem, therefore I beleive it is a network problem not pc.
The only way to reconnect to the modem/internet is to reboot the pc.
    Any suggestions are welcome

Router has been working for last year. Within last few days, router stopped passing photo's attached to forum discussions. In order to trouble shoot. Router was accessed and channel changed to #11 per instructions. (There has always been a dropped internet issue/reboot to fix, with this router.) The most recent firmware update was installed today with no positive effect upon the picture problem. Has something changed or become innoperative in the electronics? The router seems to work fine on any other website that provides pictures, just the forum sites. (www.exracers.com) Photo's are viewable on desktop computer (at this site) that is ethernet cable connected to router. It is the wireless feature that no longer seems to pass the photographs. (I believe many of the forum users place their photo's in photobucket.) (All computers used are 2years old or newer Mac's.)

  • WRT54G loosing connection

Would it help to change the channel on my WRT54G to possibly solve the connection dropping issue I am having? I am in a different room about 20 feet away with open doorways and can't seem to keep a connection. Thought I would try this before upgrading. Thanks

You can do the following settings on your Router...
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
Click on the Wireless tab...Click on the Sub tab under Wireless >Advanced Wireless Settings..Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Loosing connection

    How's everyone.
I know this has been posted a million times, but I just can't seem to find an answer to my problem. I have the WRT54G wireless router not sure Version # (bought 2 weeks ago), with one computer conneted wireless and one wired. Now I've done search after search, I've even done the online chat with a linksys associate and can't get this to work. For some reason, at any givin time, I will loose connection to the internet on both computers at the same time. Now when I check the router settings, everything seems fine, I have a IP from my ISP, both computers are listed in the DHCP list, but in order to get it back up, I have to release/renew the router connection to my ISP modem. Now I had the MTU set to 1500 and have since lowered it to 1300, which really should not matter since I had another brand of wireless router setup about 2 weeks ago @ 1500 with no problems. The only thing I have not done yet is update the firmware. Reason being, all the other posts I've read said that they have done the upgrade with no results. At work I have the same router (actually a little older) with the same ISP and all the settings seem to be the same as mine.
If anyone out there has had the same problem and know's of a possible fix, it would be greatly appreciated.

The version of the router is printed on the label behind the model name.
Have you tried some pings to see you far you get or a traceroute?
Pings to the router, to the ISP gateway, etc.
A traceroute (tracert in windows) to an IP address in the internet.

I have just upgraded to Windows 8 and my scyning and upgrading my phone with new apple software fails, Itunes looses connection with the device (phone), cant backup the phone or download new software, is this an issues with Windows

    Hi, stig2013.
I would recommend the steps in the article below.  See the section labeled Verify that the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is installed > For Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 > Update the Apple Mobile Device Driver.
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1538
If you are receiving an error message, find the exact error number that you recieved in the article below and process the steps.
iTunes: Specific update-and-restore error messages and advanced troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if you manually disconnect the device during the restore process. You can resolve this issue by using USB troubleshooting, using a different Dock Connector or Lightning Connector to USB cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

  • Firewire device looses connection when external screen is inserted into the thunderbolt port? HELP

    HI
I am a recording studio engineer. Ive got a Firewire AD/DA Converter (Focusrite Saffire Pro 56) running from my Firewire port of my MacBook Pro, which is running OSX Mavericks. I've also got an external Screen I want to use as an extended display. I'm using a HDMI cable from the screen to a HDMI to Thunderbolt Converter which I then plug into my Thurderbolt Port.
As soon as I plug the screen in, the Firewire Port looses connection completely and I cant use or even choose the Saffire Pro 56 as audio driver. Another thing happens where the Thunderbolt port replaces the Saffire Pro 56 Driver with the screen as the audio output source.
Please help, there's nothing I can find to fix this.
    Thanks Maurice

You don't mention which model you have, but this is from the M-Audio Firewire 410 Manual Troubleshooting section:
The FireWire 410 has been designed to give you high performance and professional quality audio. It has been tested under a wide range
of systems and operating conditions. In the real world, however, there is a nearly infinite number of possible operating scenarios, any of
which could affect your system’s performance. Much like owning an automobile, “your mileage may vary.” This section can not begin to
cover all possible issues you may encounter, however we want to give you some suggestions on common problems you may experience.
One thing to avoid is connecting too many devices. The FireWire bus is a dependable, high-speed, high-bandwidth protocol which is ideally
suited for digital audio. Nonetheless, it’s important to remember that audio and multimedia streaming places considerable demands on
your processor and the FireWire bus. Although it is theoretically possible to chain many multiple FireWire devices in series, doing so may
    potentially degrade your audio performance.
I guess this degradation could also affect the Firewire HD. Maybe there is a simple fix, but it sounds like the M-Audio people have been down this road before.

  • Wi-Fi loosing connection every few seconds on my macbook pro and its not my router's fault (running yoseomite)

Basically I bought my new Macbook Pro retina display in September 2014. My wifi was working perfectly well for about a month or two until Yosemite was brought out. I'm not sure if it was immediately after I downloaded Yosemite or not, but not long afterwards I noticed I was having trouble with my wifi (and not just mine but my schools as well). Every time my computer tries to join the wifi network it will work for a while (5 seconds) and it will say that I have a wifi connection but then it will just stop working and it will say I'm not connected to wifi. A few seconds later and it will then reconnect and say I have wifi. I am fairly certain this is not my wireless router ( a BT home hub) as I have other devices such as my iPhone and a computer which does not suffer these problems. After a while of it loosing connection and then gaining connection it will finally stop and the wifi icon at the top will suggest I have a wifi connection but when I hover over it, I see it says "Wi-Fi:looking for networks..." and then 2 seconds later it will say "Wi-Fi: On" and it will repeat like this for however long I am on the network. When the icon appears to suggest I have a connection I am able to load a webpage but it is slow and watching Netflix can be tiresome. I've scoured these forums for information that will solve my issue however all I have found is outdated information from 2010 or 2012 or too technical information that I can't understand. Does anyone else have this problem, has anyone else found a solution, it would be much appreciated if any one could help me solve t.

Please test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Take the applicable steps in this support article. The Wireless Diagnostics program generates a large file of information about your system, which would be used by Apple Engineering in case of a support incident. Don't post the contents here.
Be sure to test on more than one Wi-Fi network, if at all possible. A desktop computer can be tested with a mobile hotspot, such as the hotspot created by a cell phone. If the problem only exists on one network, then the access point of that network should be the focus of your attention, not the computer.
    Step 2
Disconnect all USB 3 devices. If you don't know which are USB 3, disconnect all USB devices except keyboard and mouse.
    Step 3
If you're not using a wireless keyboard or trackpad, disable Bluetooth by selecting Turn Bluetooth Off from the menu with the Bluetooth icon. If you don't have that menu, open the Bluetooth preference pane in System Preferences and check the box marked Show Bluetooth in menu bar. Test. If you find that Wi-Fi works better with Bluetooth disabled, you should use the 5 GHz Wi-Fi band. Your router may not support it; in that case, you need a new router.
    Step 4
Open the Energy Saver pane in System Preferences and unlock the settings, if necessary. Select the Power Adapter  tab, if there is one. Uncheck the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
    if it's checked.
    Step 5
Open the Network pane in System Preferences and make a note of your settings in the Wi-Fi service. It may be helpful to take screenshots of the various tabs in the preference pane. If the preference pane is locked, unlock it by clicking the padlock icon and entering your administrator password. Delete Wi-Fi from the service list on the left by selecting it and clicking the minus-sign button at the bottom. Then recreate the service by clicking the plus-sign button and following the prompts.
    Step 6
    In the Wi-Fi settings, select
              Advanced... ▹ TCP/IP ▹ Configure IPv6: Link-local
    Click OK and then Apply.
    Step 7
    Reset the System Management Controller.
    Step 8
    Reset the PRAM.
    Step 9
Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. You'll be prompted for the password when you reconnect. Save it in the keychain.
    Step 10
Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service center.

  • Loose connection between Mac Mini and Apple TV 2

Help!     I have a new Mac Mini 2.5 ghz running Lion and Apple TV2 hooked up to my 32 inch LG TV.
Before I got the Mac Mini, Apple TV was running just fine on the same network with my Win 7 machine.
Ever since I got the Mac Mini and I run the Apple Tv at the same time.  I loose connection on both.  My cable provider replaced the router and all my other Win 7 machines run just fine on a wireless network.  I might also add that when the apple tv and mac mini goes down, my ipad 2 goes down too.  Of course, air play doesn't work .  It comes and goes.
I have a 2nd Apple TV 2 and hooked that up to the same tv with the same results.  I have called Apple many times.  They are helpful but not been able to solve my problem.   The cable provider and I have traced down to a conflict between the Apple TV, Mac Mini and the IPAD 2 .
Does anyone have any ideas what may be wrong?

I have had multiple ATV's, desktops, laptops, and i Devices all running at the same time without a problem. Typically on a network when you start 2 devices and the connection crashes it is an IP problem. Check the IP address on both devices and see. It is usually easiest to have the router assign IPs automatically using DHCP. The router, computers, and ATVs should also be set to DHCP.
If everything is set to DHCP try disabling DHCP and assign fixed IPs to each device.

  • Help. Changing subnet mask looses connectivity.

    HI,
I know this is basic but is giving me a lot of head ache.
    I had a /30 between the Router(3925)  and the ASA(5515).
Installed EHWIC on the router to support ASA failover.
I loose connection when I change the mask at /29.
So currently the vlan interface at the router has address 10.xx.xx.xx/30 and ASA interface has 10.xx.xx.xx/29.
This works fine but the moment I change router's mask to /29 it looses connection.
Cant figure out why and I have checked all I could.
    - Did shut/ no shut on the interface
    - Speed/Duplex settings are set to auto both sides.
      Its frustrating. Please help.

  • WRT54G loses connection many times an hour

For some reason, I loose connection to the router config and the internet, many times during a normal web surfing session. I noticed it usually happens when I am 'clicking-thru" web pages quickly. The only way to restore normal function is to cycle the power plug. If i remove the router and go back to my old slower router or direct computer to cable modem connection, I have no problems. I am using the Ver 6 of the router and I am at firmware level V 1.01.0.
This happens from either one of my 2 wired computers.
Please help, I can't return the router because I tossed the box in the trash. I have had the unit for about 2 months.
If I can't fix this, I am going to get another router

Use a static IP address instead of DHCP.
Open your Wireless Connection Properties, click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Properties, Use the Following IP Address.
    In the fileds below enter:
IP Address:  192.168.1.x  where x is any number between 2 and 255.
    Subnet Mask:  255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway:  192.168.1.1
Then select Use the Following DNS Server Addreses and enter the IP addresses for the Preferred DNS server and the Alternate DNS server.
You get these numbers from the router.  Go into the router configuration and click on Status. At the biottom of the screen you will see DNS1 and DNS2.  DNS1 is your preferred server, and DNS2 is your alternate server.
After you enter the DNS addresses, click OK, OK. Your computer will then negoitate a session with the router using the address you specified instead of the router deciding which address to use.
    Good luck!

  • IMAC looses connection to Printer

Computer will not print and seems to lose connection to the printer. I deleted all printers and made a new printer connection. Printer has address 192.168.0.14.  Later IMAC looses connection to printer again. I look at address on printer and it is now 192.168.0.15. Its done this several times. So why does the printer keep changing its address? Is there a way to set it permanently?

Hi  I may have found what you are looking for to set the printer up with a dedicated IP Address. The printer obtains the IP address from your router, I'm not sure why your router is reassigning the IP addresses so frequently.  All of the steps for troubleshooting the Printer Does Not Maintain Wireless Connection are on available on that document, but I have copied the basics on setting up the Static IP address. (Solution five: Assign the printer a static IP address) You can review that document and try the other solutions if you continue to have connectivity issues. Locate your printer's current IP address, which you already haveOpen an Internet browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc.) on your computer.Type your printer's IP address in the browser's address bar, and then press Enter. The Embedded Web Server (EWS) opens.Click the Network tab from the EWS navigation menu.In the Wireless section, click the Network Address (IP) or IPv6 configuration, depending on your network setup.Click Manual IP, and then click Suggest a Manual IP Address.
A manual IP address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway displays.Don't forget to save or apply the settings I believe you might want to try to refresh your network connection afterwards. Power cycling your router allows it to reestablish a fresh connection to all of your devices. Here's how to power cycle your network if you are unsure: 1) Unplug the power cable from your wireless router (NOTE: Do not reset the router)
    2) Do the same for the printer
    3) Shut down the computer
    4) First plug the router back in, and wait for it to fully power up
    5) Then plug the printer back in and wait for the wireless light to become solid.
    6) Once both the router and printer are on, go ahead and turn the computer back on  Check to make sure the manual IP address has stayed on the printer.
You may also have to remove and add your printer in Printers and Scanners.Open your System Preferences, click on Printers and Scanners.Click the name of your printer, click the minus sign (), and then delete the printer.Once the printer is removed, click the plus sign (), click Add Printer or Scanner, click the name of your printer  Please let me know if these steps resolved your issue, or if there is anything else I can do to help.  I look forward to hearing from you!   Thanks,

  • Loosing connection to my iMac drive

    Hello Support Community,
I have an late 2012 late model iMac and a 13in Retina pro MacBook Pro.
I do a lot of graphics work and what I used to do (before upgrading my MacBook) is do most of my graphics work on my iMac, but sometimes want to sit on the couch and use my MacBook instead.
So i'd log into my iMac's drive on my MacBook and just access the files (so all the files stay on my iMac).
In the last 3 months I have run into a problem where while connect to my iMac's drive, the drive would drop out (loose connection, as you can see by my pings below), which would then make my MacBook not happy and the finder would have the spinning wheel of death for a long time, UNLESS I get up and "wake up" my iMac or force quite the finder on the MacBook.
I have set the Hard drives NOT to sleep on the iMac and made sure that wake for network activity is on, but in the past I could be connected for hours with no problem.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Also, as I am transferring files from iMac to MacBook sometimes it even drops out half way.

Your screenshot is blank and even clicking on it just brings up an error.. the site is having issues.. has done so since the latest Apple update.
Same with your Yosemite installed OS. It is bug farm. There are lots of issues and it is hard to get things working in a consistent way on the network.
Redo the setup of the TC.. starting with a factory reset.
Use only short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. eg TCgen5 for basestation name and TCwifi for wireless name.
Use pure alphanumeric passwords.. 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.
Then if you have issues.. try manually mounting the TC.
In finder. Use Go, Connect to Server from the top menu.
Type in AFP://TCgen5.local (use the actual name of the TC and local is the default domain).
If that doesn't work use the IP address. AFP://10.0.1.1 (that is the default IP in router mode.. you will need a fixed IP for this to be useful).
Save the password in your keychain.
Welcome to the bleeding edge. The problem with every new OS release now is the users are all now beta testers.. !

Got new ATV and all set up. It keeps loosing connection with iTunes on laptop and have tried everything suggested in set up guide. It works fine for a while then the iTunes account vanishes from 'computer' menu TV screen.  Full Wifi signal on both devices so can't think what could be causing it to happen. Any suggestions please?

Sorry, I updated another thread I was a part of but didn't update my own thread.....ughhh!
I updated all of my ATV 2's and 3's to the latest firmware when it was released and have been problem free since. I do believe the major issue of not being able to connect after a period of inactivity has been corrected with the latest ATV firmware.
I can look at my network connection table using "netstat -an" in a CMD window and I do not see the massive number of connections I saw before the update.
Here is a link to the other thread I was referring to above:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/19952545#19952545
Have you applied the latest firmware updates to your ATV 3's?
