WRT54GS MTU Question

Hi. I owned a WRK54G for a few years and just replaced it with a WRT54GS. I'm not too knowledgeable in the area, but I've been wondering what a good MTU to start off with would be. I have most of the other settings down.

The Optimum Online website didn't have any info. So, I found a FAQ for Optimum Online on dslreports.com They stated that an MTU value of 1500 should be used as well, so I'll go with them. I have another noob question thats been bothering me. I realized that I purchased version 6 of the router, while the newest version is 7. Looking at Wikipedia, I see that version 7 has a faster clock speed. I won't be using third party firmware, so does it matter?

  • WRT54GS linkage question/Netgear wireless router add-on

My house has a wired Linksys setup and my roommates and I wanna add wifi to it. Question is: Can EFAH05W EtherFast® 10/100 5-port Auto-Sensing Hub be linked up to WRT54GS Wireless-G Broadband Router with SpeedBooster or WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router or WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband Router, so we can have wifi and have more then four 10/100 ports with wifi access for laptops?
    Our current configuration: EFAH05W EtherFast® 10/100 5-port Auto-Sensing Hub + BEFSR41 EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch connected to BEFCMU10 Cable Modem with USB and Ethernet Connections
I figure with our current configuration, all that is needed is the WAP54G Wireless-G Access Point.
Also, I got a Netgear WGR614 v6 54 Mbps Wireless Router for free from Dell when I bought my laptop. Is there a way of connecting it to my households current configuration as a wireless access point? I tried connecting it to my cat5 plug in my room, but can't get anything to work but I do see activity on my network connection.Message Edited by DKSquall on 09-02-200601:54 AM

You can connect it this way:BEFCMU10 Cable Modem with USB and Ethernet Connections connected to  BEFSR41 EtherFast® Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch then connect your  Netgear WGR614 v6 54 Mbps Wireless Router.
Your WGR614 v6 will be the access point for the network.
You can start with that thought for your network setup.

  • ASR - IPSEC, GRE, channel group, and MTU Questions

I have an ASR1004 and am trying to load-balance a 1.5G data rate over two 1-Gig ports using IPSEC ports, but I have a few questions.
    1. Can GRE support a 9K mtu
    2. Can you run IPSEC on a channel-group
    3. Can the ASR load-balance per- S&D on a channel-group?
I currently have two separate tunnels, one on each outbound gig link with OSPF running. However, I can't get a 7000 mtu w/ the DF bit set through to the distant end. I am guessing this is because of the GRE interface.
So is it possible to run IPSEC on a channel-group and have this load balance per S&D? I need to use the BW of both ports.
    Thanks for the help!

The ASR1004 router we can only send packets with a maximum MTU size of 1438 Bytes over the encrypted tunnel.

I have the WRT54G Version 6. I could not connect -- First I updated the firmware. Check the linksys site for your router under support to ensure you have the most up-to-date firmware. Still could not connect. Observed which IP it was assigning to the XBox then put this IP address into the DMZ. It has worked since. Might work, might not. I noticed you have the V3 router, so hope this helps in some way.

  • Wireless WRT54GS speedbooster question

    Hello everyone.
I have a few questions if someone could give me some answers. I'm using Vista Ultimate. I've got to tackle  installing the router again since I have a different computer and then I'll have to set up networks to other computers here (3) actually. But I have had my wireless speedbooster for a year and now got to go through the whole process again. My question is why do they call it wireless when you have to plug in cables? What is the wireless part suppose to consist of? Someone came to my house this past weekend and said something about it and it did make me wonder about that.
And how far can you actually set another computer to your network. Is it only in your household location or can you let someone 10 minutes away to network with you or add them on your network.
I tried to search for the wireless question but I couldn't find it and I did go under general question but for some reason couldn't find a new message so I could ask. It's been very aggravating and I didn't remember it being this aggravating before. Also I've read here that I don't have to install the router through the CD. I have tried to do that on these vista windows which I hate and I'm going to install windows 7 over this when I get the chance but I got to tackle one thing at a time. You'll never know if you don't asking tried to connect the router and computer using the CD it goes through the whole thing but never really configures it but then it was very very slow after that so it must have done something. So  now it's not even plugged  in or connected at all. Ever since I disconnected and connected my DSL back to my computer I have these issues  whenever I cut my computer it telling me these message. When booting up 1-"cannot communicate with DNS 208 104 244 45 network diagnosis pinged the remote host with no response". And this message "windows confirmed that primary DNS server is currently online but is not responding windows confirmed that primary DNS server is currently online but is not responding at this time this usually means the firewall is running between the two and computers (I have only one connected at all at home for now!) and blocking the domain. Windows have confirmed that the firewall on computer is confirmed correctly to allow this connection but however a firewall is blocking your connection". Can anyone guide me somewhere or give me links to follow because I have a serious cornea infections and hoping that I haven't lost my eyesight in one eye and I'm not suppose to be on the computer to let my eye rest.
Any help would be very much appreciated very much
    Thanks, Harley123

The Router which you have its an 4 Port Ethernet / Wireless Router. Well its not necessary to Hardwired your computer always to the Router. Once your Router is Configured properly, then you don't need to connect your computer, you can use all the computers Wirelessly and they all will be able to go online... Just for an Initial Setup you need to Hardwired your computer to the Router, Once its done then you need to unplug the Ethernet cable from your Computer and your computer should be able to go online wirelessly.
The wireless signals of your Router can go upto 80 to 100fts, Not beyond that. As you have mentioned that you want to share the connection with some who is 10min away from your Place, then its Impossible.
There are 2 different ways to configure your Router, Using the Setup Disk or Configuring all the settings on your Router Manually.
Whenever you connect your Modem to your Computer and if you face that problem just you need to Unplug the power from the Modem wait for 10sec and replug to the power to your Modem and check if you are Online.
Windows Vista has Many issue while connecting to Internet. Sometimes you get all the information on your computer and your computer is properly connected, but the Vista computer doesn't let you go Online.

  • WRT54GS Stability Question

I have a WRT54GS that I am using in my home to connect various devices to the internet. I have my computer and Xbox 360 wired to it. I have my Wii, brother's Xbox 360 and various other portables. Recently I have been having issues with the WRT54GS where when playing online with my Xbox360 or using the internet on my PC the connection will just drop. However, the wireless will stay online to where my brother can continue to play his Xbox360 or his other wireless devices. In order to get my wired components back online I have to shut everything down and reboot the modem and the WRT54GS. Haven't tired just rebooting one and not the other but doesn't seem like it would be a modem issue if the online wireless still worked. Any ideas on what I can do to prevent this? I am about to go buy a new router but rather figure this problem out.

Same problem with a MAC Laptop. Working on the MAC is fine, when the MAC is shutdown, or goes to sleep, the router must be shutdown and restarted.
I have tried getting the newest firmware and rebooting. Did not help.
    Any insight?

  • Wrt54gs configuration question

I have an existing computer with a DSL modem (dynamic IP), I have (2) NIC's one DHCP plugged into the DSL router, and one DHCP plugged into the WRT54GS I just bought.
I use dyndns.org to map to the IP from the outside. I have IIs running, hosting a website, I have an FTP server runing, I use RDP via tsweb, I also use torrents, p2p and have a boinc client running. I don't want to change any of this...
I can browse my shares from the laptop via wireless and browse the laptop from the PC, now how can I enable Internet access on the laptop without changing anything on the PC? I've been trying for about 6 hours without any luck.
    Please help....

Your modem connects to the PC.
The PC connects to the WRT.
The WRT connects to the laptop.
    Correct?
You have to modify the settings on the PC, otherwise it won't work. The PC must forward the packets from one NIC to the other (i.e. do routing or packet forwarding). You have to enable that on the PC. Right now I am not sure how to that on Windows.
However, it won't really help to have the DHCP server on the WRT running. The DHCP server by default assigns its own IP address as default gateway in DHCP offers to the clients. Therefore internet traffic will be routed to the WRT where it will be dropped because the WRT does not have an internet connection.
You would thus have to define the default gateway manually on your laptop and then you are basically using a static IP address anyway.
I would rather suggest you enable ICS - Internet Connection Sharing - on the PC. With ICS the computer will also work as DHCP server for the LAN plus it automatically forwards traffic between the LAN and the WAN and it does NAT, too. Turn off the DHCP server on the WRT, then. Your laptop will get an IP address from your PC and connects to the internet through your PC.
As ICS uses 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0 per default you won't be able to access the web configuration interface of the router after the change. Therefore I would suggest to change the LAN IP address to something like 192.168.0.2 on the WRT. Then the WRT is still accessible even with ICS.

  • WRT54GS Security Question

Hi;  We currently have connected:  Our Server (just a desktop computer) connected to WRT54GS Wireless router, which is connected to a 16 port Switch.  I am trying to find out if we can just have someone access the wireless router for internet without being able to access our server?

Your router will not block any Wireless Computer to access your server if you have File and Printer Sharing Enabled...If you want the Wireless Clients to prevent accessing your server you have to setup permissions on your Server(it depends on your server/OS)...
If you disable File and Printer Sharing on your server then no wireless client would have access to your server...

  • WRT54G firmware question

I have a WRT54G v.2 router that has been working great for close to a year now. I've never updated the firmware and see  that there have been a couple of upgrades since I put it into service. If I choose to update do I need to do so progressively by downloading and installing each of the updates or can I just download the latest and call it good.
Updating the firmware hasn't crossed my mind because the router has work well, but I have a distant weak area in the house and am considering a WRE54G extender and am not sure that I need the lastest firmware for my router before I make that move. Thanks.

If you are running a Firmware earlier to fw : 4.00.2, then you should Upgrade your router's firmware as WRE54G won't work with an older firmware...
Download Firmware 2.95 MB (fw version : 4.21.1)...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device: -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page.In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

    Best Regards,

    Hi,
I think you should move this post to the appropriate section because I don't see any relationship with IPv6 here.
Hi if you had an MTU problem all your packets should be dropped and you would have to set the DF-bit in the extended ping to test because by default if the DF bit is not set the routers will fragment the packets.
    Regards.

  • WRT54G Router Question

I was just wondering does therouter have to be connected to a computer, might be a stupid question, but i was experimenting last night and when i unplugged the ethernet cord that connects my router to my computer the other 2 computers in the house ran faster than they ever have, so i was wondering if i could buy an adapter for my computer and the internet would still work on all 3 computers

Yes internet will still work once you got Wireless adapter with either one two or three...computers. ..

Hi, I'm thinking of purchasing a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router With SpeedBooster (WRT54GS-CA).
Does it have url/domain filters? I know it has Parental Controls but I'm not interested in purchasing that service or using PC. I'd like to have url/domain filters as a free service.
What other Linksys wireless routers have url filters and Quality of Service components?

The WRT54GS have a Website Blocking by URL Address, and Website blocking by Keyword;  and it also have a QoS.

Oh, and one more thing. When i plug everything into the Router the Power button and the WLAN lights stay on, but the Ehternet and Internet lights flash. Is this suppose to happen?

well you need to logon router's setup page, open I.E. and inthe address bar type 192.168.1.1, it would ask for username and password, put "admin"(default password) of router... go to administration tab >> firmware upgrade >> browse for firmware file and upgrade it, reset the router and reconfigure it according to ISP settings...
ethernet and wireless lights are blinking staht indicates router is communicating withe wired connection as well wireless connection.

  • WRT54G Security question

    Hi everybody,
So I have aquestion about wireless security and if I need to set up encryption. I am a cable internet subscriber so I am using the DCHP configuration on my router. I had to clone my mac address and I clicked the option to permit only the PC's whose MAC addresses are on the list. Since I couldn't get on to the internet with my laptop until I put in my MAC address for wireless use, does this mean that my network is already secure or do I need to set up WEP or some other authentication.

You still need to setup your security.  Use WPA2 as it is more secured than WEP.

Is your PC going to be wired or wireless? Anyway, set-up CD usually does not work properly. Connect a PC directly to the modem and go to www.linksys.com/easy and run the EasyLink Connect Tool.
