WRT54GS Need Help

Hi, I'm currently using a new Dell computer with a cable modem and Linksys router, WRT54GS with speed booster. The main computer is hard wired to the router and I have internet .  I have been trying to connect to the internet on my other wireless Dell computer which is using a USB network adapter #WUSB54GS.  My wireless icon on the wireless computer shows an excellent connection, but I cannot connect to the internet. I have spent several hours on line with the Linksys Technicians trying to solve this problem. I was told that the router was a problem and I have returned it for a new one. Both computers are using windowsXP. Does anyone have a clue? Could it b e the new computer or modem preventing the wireless from getting connected to the internet?
skihouse

no...the modem cannot prevent the wireless getting connected to the internet..as one of your computers is already online through the router, that means the modem and the router are functioning.....it could be the adapter that is not installed correctly...
as you have windows xp, try this :
uninstall the adapter completely and install only the drivers....allow windows to manage the wireless connection...also ensure that you do not have any static ip assigned to that computer..
let me know if it helps you....

  • WRT54G - Need help asap!

First and foremost, thanks for helping...
I've been running into a problem with my WRT54G.  When I try to access the admin page at 192.168.1.1, it will ask for the password and accept it, but then the page loads VERY slow (sometimes timing out), and if it does load... a lot of buttons/options are missing/misplaced.
This is trying to access it from any of the 3 computers connected to it (one wired, two wireless).  The internet connection itself is blazing fast.... not problem there.  But I need to get into the admin page to change a few of the port settings.
My ISP is Comcast, and I have ping'ed the 192.168.1.1 address with good results.
    Anyone have an idea?

Try to adjust the browser settings...Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on O.k...Close the IE and re-open it...

  • Wrt54gs- need help please

I have replaced my wrk54 router with a used wrt54gs router. I got it from a someone who had no need for it since going to FOIS- I did not get the set up CD :~(
Q is there someway of setting it up with out the cd? can the set up program be downloaded for example?
Q By plugging it in and holding the reset for a minute -does that wipe out the previous config, password , does it go back to "out of the box" etc....?
    Any other tips or ideas?
    Thanks so much.

► reset... not really for a minute... 20-30 seconds of reset would do
► go to www.linksys.com/easy and download the EasyLink Connect Software (that more or less functions like the set-up CD)...

  • WRT54GS Need help, interesting security problem

    Hi All,
New to this community, so I hope that my description is understandable. Plus, I've been reading with ernest, am totally confused and wish someone could just tell me "this is how you fix this: Step 1..." but it never seems to happen that way.
    1. WRT54GS Wireless Router, (not sure of the version because my setup page says one thing and the bottom says different) was originally setup with a Gateway Desktop, longer than 5 yrs ago.
    2. Currently the host computer is a Dell. We have 1 wireless laptop, 2 netbooks, 1 iPod, and 2 wireless printers in a home network.
The main problem is getting online (I never know how many devices will try to do something at the same time) with the router (keeps saying that the "Security" is Open"). I've tried to setup new networks, resulting in the same problem. Is it possible to just remove the Dell from the network or could the wireless laptop become the host computer? And could someone explain to me how to do that? The last time I tried to change the security on the router, (I believe that WEP is what the Dell set it at and I was trying to change it to a higher level), I got a notification that not all the devices were the same, security could not be changed. Help, I just want us all to be able to use a secure network!!

If you are not sure of the version why don't you post what is printed on the bottom and what is shown on the setup page?

Where does it say "security is open" exactly? What page? Where? When?
Go to the setup page of the router. Wireless and Wireless Security. Post your current settings on those two pages. That will show how your wireless is configured.
    We'll take it from there...

  • WRT54G Need Help ASAP Please

so i had my router setup and working fine and all with a static ip, which was used for internet gaming... then today im the middle of playing it decided to come up with an error with the router. i had this computer wired for setup then went wireless.  it says that i have full signal but the internet is not available.. does anyone have any idea what the heck is going on???
Message Edited by icmorhinee on 01-12-200705:26 PM

    Hi...
The static IP that you were using was it on  the router or on the computer ? In case if you are using a static IP on your router, make sure that the IP is valid. TO verify the IP address setting connect the computer to the modem directly...Assign the IP address, Subnet Mask, Default gateway and DNS server on the computer. Make sure that the computer is able to go online. In case if the computer is unable to go online make sure that the IP address is correct.
If the computer is able to go online with the static IP. Disconnect the computer from the modem. reset router. set the computer back to DHCP. open Internet explorer ……in the address bar type http://192.168.1.1 (default IP address). Leave the username field blank  and in the password type “admin” ( Default Password).  Now configure the router with the IP address setting. Also set the MTU to1300. Make all the wireless setting required. Powercycle the whole network.
In case if the static IP address is on  the computer , make sure that u are able to ping the router . Also check all the wireless setting on the router and make sure that your connected with the same.

  • WRT54GS cannot be configured, need help!!!!

Ok.. I am getting so lost.  I will try to explain the best I can what is going on.  I just bought the Wireless G router with speedbooster and put the CD in to set it up, did everything it told me to do on the screen as far as pluggin cables in yada yada. When it came to step 4 of 4 it said "Waiting for Router". Then after about 2-3 minutes it comes back saying the following:
YOUR ROUTER DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE CONNECTED PROPERLY
Error 322: New router or Gateway not detected
    Follow these steps:
    1) Make sure you are connecting your new router and not your old router
    2) Make sure the ethernet cable from your computer is securely connected to a LAN port on the back of your new router
    3) Click retry to try installing your router again
Also, when I try to retry the setup without unplugging anything it says this:
Linksys EasyLink Advisor Setup Wizard has discovered that you are already connected to a router. Many people choose to replace an existing router with their new Linksys Router.
I can connect to the internet without configuring the router!!! It isn't secure though!  I want to configure my router so that it is secure and I don't know what to do to fix this.
I am using a Comcast provided modem, RCA model # DCM425
Any help would be greatly appreciated... Remember I am a noob so please don't confuse me more with words I don't understand.. Thanks
One more thing.  When it is "Waiting for router" the 2 computer icon comes up at bottom of screen saying acquiring IP address so I double clicked on it and it would be connected with the IP address 192.168.1.1 and then all of a sudden it would say Invalid IP address not connected.  I really need help here!!!

Ok, I'm not 100% sure I can help you, but I will try.
First thing, find the setup disk that came with the router and use it as a coaster or a frisbee or something because it is almost completely worthless.
Until you have completed the setup of the router, I would suggest using a computer that is connected directly to the router via ethernet cable. The reason being, if you change any settings wirelessly, such as security features, you will be disconnected and unable to access it again. So use a computer that is directly connected for setup.
The IP address you saw in you system tray is the IP address of the router itself. You actually need this for your router setup. Open whichever web browser you use and type in that IP address, nothing else. 192.168.1.1 A login screen should appear for you to enter your user name and password. Leave the user name blank and for the password enter "admin" without the quotes. This should bring you to your basic settings screen for the router.
From this point, I'm sure exactly how you want to set everything up. If you're not very familiar with networking or routers I would suggest you change very little. If you desire security for your network (which I suggest) click on the "Wireless" tab at the top of the screen. This should bring you to basic wireless settings. From here, you can change the name of your wireless network, change the broadcast frequency and enable/disable wireless broadcast. You can change these if you like or leave them alone whichever you prefer. I do suggest changing the name of you network (SSID) so you can tell which one is yours when you try to connect. It gets confusing when everyone in your neighborhood has a Linksys and all of the names look similar.
Once you're done here, next click on the "Wireless Security" tab within the "Wireless" tap. Make sure you are click "Wireless Security" and not just "Security." From here, you can select the kind of wireless security you want to use. I'm not highly informed on which of these is the best, but WEP is probably the strongest security you're going to need anyway, so I would go with that. After you select WEP you get a few more options. For "default transmit key" just select one. Then in the "WEP Encryption" drop down, select "128 bits 26 hex digits." 64 would most likely be ok, but 128 bit encryption is definitely better.
In the next box "Passphase" enter a word or short phrase that is only known to you an click generate. The four boxes below will now have you WEP keys. I delete all but the first key to keep things simple, but whatever you want to do is up to you. After you delete the other three lines, select the key in your first line and select/copy it so that you can just paste it into the box in network options when you're connecting to the network. Regardless, I would also write this key down somewhere. If you have multiple computers in the house you have to enter it on each and every one and it's a pain to go back and forth. Click save settings. You're pretty much done. There are other things you can do to beef up security, but this is the most basic and it's still quite strong.
If you are looking at playing games frequently or anything like that I would go to PortForward.com
Any other questions you have, you should be able to google I think. I hope I can help. Good Luck.

i need help bad with getting command and conquer generals to play online because i never had a problem before with connection prior to getting the router but now i can't stay on for more then 30 seconds and i am really frustrated, can u please help me?

Hi…Every game works on different TCP or UDP ports.  You need to forward these ports on your router and reduce the MTU to 1365. So get the port no required by your game, forward the port for the IP address of your PC.

  • Need help accessing the router web page.  I have been tol...

Need help accessing the router web page.  I have been told my router is acting like a switch and the IP address is not in the proper range.  I have tried reseting the router (hold for 30 sec and unplug for 5 mins).  Didn't work.
    thanks

What router are you using?  Almost all Linksys routers use 192.168.1.1 as the default local IP address, but there is at least one that uses 192.168.16.1 , namely the WTR54GS  (not the WRT54GS).
You need to try again to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank (note: a few Linksys routers have a default user name of "admin" (with no quotes)), and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Need Help using WRT54GL as Wireless Bridge for Xbox

    Hi.
I need help configuring my WRT54GL as a wireless bridge for my xbox.
I have a Billion BiPAC 7404VGO currently in service as my main router/modem. i.e. I have my ADSL connection and PC connected to this. I also connect to this with a laptop.
I have an original xbox at the other end of the house (cat5 NOT an option).
Basically I want to connect my xbox to the rest of network. I have a WRT54GL I can use for this. I just dont know how to set it up.
The WRT54GL has Firmware Version: v4.30.7 (out of the box).
My Wireless network is using WPA.
I have a VPN setup through to work via the Billion.
The idea is to stream media from my PC to the xbox (media centre).
Any help would be HUGELY appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.
    Katman

A wireless router is a device which requires its own wired internet connection. A wireless router is not a wireless access point like the Linksys WAPs. A wireless router does not connect wireless to other wireless routers/APs with standard Linksys firmware. With Linksys firmware you need a WAP54G or similar. The WAPs support wireless bridging and repeater mode.
If you already have a WRT54GL then you have to install a 3rd party firmware which adds wireless bridging capabilities. Read the wikipedia article on "WRT54G" for information about which WRT models support 3rd party firmware and an overview of projects and links.
Remember, however, that you may brick your router if you install a 3rd party firmware incorrectly and you probably void the warranty if you install 3rd party firmware (it is even possible to find out after you restore the original Linksys firmware if you don't clear the NVRAM before).
