WRT54GS problem with bittorrent

I have a WRT54GS, flashed to firmware v 1.52.8. It's been working fine up until a recent move. I set it up after I moved into my new place and got service connected (Comcast) and that's when I noticed the problem. I have a PC connected via CAT5 through the router and use the wireless access point for my laptop. In the past, my average download speed on torrents with decent seeds have been around 1.5 - 3 MB/s (yes, that's MBps not mbps... I know the difference) Recently however they are topping out at anywhere from 150 KBps to 250 KBps. Uploads are not affected... they seem to be averaging about the same. Additionally, while a torrent is downloading, web browsing/email/etc is not functional: everything times out in spite of QoS settings I have in place on the router to avoid these issues.
Initially I assumed it was my ISP throttling my connection--Comcast has been known to do this in the past, after all--but after testing at Glasnost reported no throttling by my ISP, I tested with the PC hooked directly to my cable modem. Result: sustained download speeds of 2.5 - 3 MB/s over the course of two test downloads (Ubuntu install ISO). During these downloads, I was able to browse to wesites without getting timeout errors like I do when behind the router. This pretty conclusively points to the WRT54GS as the source of my problem, so I'm wondering if anyone else has any suggestions for resolving this other than tossing the router and getting a new one.
EDIT: I should mention that I only torrent on the PC so this is not a wireless issue.
Solved!
Go to Solution.

That seems to have done the trick. IDK what caused it to stop working, but after the factory reset and putting my wireless settings back in again (plus port forwarding for my games and bittorrent) I'm able to stream video from Netflix while downloading a torrent at a reasonable speed and still click on web links and have them load. Thanks for the suggestion!

  • WRT54G Problems with internet, help, used to be fine on old router

    Hello,
I've bought this router yesterday and have 4 major problems with it ( I've had a cheap router before this and all these problems didn't occur when I use that old router again):
1: I can't access some sites like gamershell or nvidia.com, while they DO load up with a proxy.
2: I can't download from at least half the sites on the www, for example everything from microsoft.com times out.
3: This disconnects after like 5 mins after starting a p2p program. Why is this thing not able to keep my connection alive ?
4: A lot of sites load slower, my internet speed is same, but it somehow now takes ages for some sites to respond after ticking in their adress or clicking on a link.
I'm Cabled to the router, the router is plugged to an old ADSL isdn speedthouch home modem from Alcatel ( 5 years old the modem is), I'm connected with it with PPTP.
    Its a version 7 WRT54G router.
( my isp is planet NL, I'm on a 6mb down 1 mb up connection)
Help! Why does this disconnect with p2p, the cheap old router used to be fine 24/7 with p2p.
    Please help, thanks in advance.

Go to the Setup page and look for the setting called MTU....set it to 1300 and save the settings.... close the browser.... turn off your router by unplugging it from the power.... turn it on after 15 secs then try getting online again.........
Check if you can access the sites afterwards..

  • Has WRT54G problem with DynDNS been fixed yet?

The DynDNS.com web site lists some problems with the WRT-54G built-in DynDNS client. See http://www.dyndns.com/support/kb/linksys_wrt54g.html under the section "The Bad".
The biggest issue is that the router will not update the server once every 28 days if the IP address does not change. If accounts are not updated, DynDNS deletes the host account. Their suggestion is to use a paid service. Ideally, this could be fixed in the firmware so the router sends out an update every 28 days even if the IP address never changes.
The DynDNS page is dated January 2005. Has this issue been fixed in the WRT54G firmware in the last three years? I was unable to find the change log for the stock WRT-54G firmware.
I'm setting up a new router for someone else and they need Dynamic DNS. I know I could pay extra for a WRT54GL, install 3rd party firmware, and eventually find a DynDNS client and service pair that works right. If this bug has been fixed, I would prefer to buy the cheaper 54G, and just stick with the stock firmware to save the extra effort debugging time.

We haven't had nay reports of issues with RabbitTV. All I can say is update to Firefox 22 and give it a try.

  • Problem with Bittorrent

I recently moved to a new place which provides wireless internet access. At my last location my bittorrent client was working well but since I arrived at my current location I haven't been able to get any torrent downloads started. I've tried two different clients and multiple different torrents but I can't get anything going. Any help would be extremely appreciated...

Some BitTorrent variants require the ability to make inbound connections to your computer (the BitTorrent "client", in these cases, acts as both a network client (initiating outbound connections) and a network server (responding to inbound connections). If at your last location, you had a direct connection (no router) to your cable/DSL modem -- or had set up the router to put your machine in a "DMZ" -- then you may have been using this variant.
This won't work at your new location, which has a wireless router serving several customers. You probably can't ask the administrator to set up port forwarding for the BitTorrent well-known ports. The alternative is to use BitTorrent clients and trackers that support a different variant of BitTorrent. I've successfully used Transmission (as a client) with two different trackers in this situation.

  • WRT54GS problems with internet

I'm apologize if this was covered already.
I have a WRT54GS ver. 6 and dsl modem(speedtouch) for about 2 months now. I lost connection this morning, so I did all the necessary things and nothing helped to get me back online. When I hit "repair" for the LAN, I got the windows error that the following action could not be completed: clearing the dns cache.
I called my provider help desk and found that I'm able to get online fine if I bypass my router.
So is there a fix so I can use this router? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • WRT54G Problems with setting up UPnP

My roommates and I have our computers hooked up to the cable modem through the router. I'm trying to setup the UPnP so we don't have to worry about port forwarding as often, but it's not working. According to the UPnP tester found here, the problem is when it tries to map a port to the router. I've checked all the settings, and everything seems to be enabled. Any advice?
The router is a WRT54G v4, firmware version 4.30.5. I'm connected to it through one of the Ethernet ports in the back, if that makes any difference.

try to consider disabling some antivirus or firewall on your PC that not mapping out the ports.. if by disabling those firewalls, then you will need to forward the port on the firewall that is blocking it

I have three computers on my wireless lan, 2 pc's and 1 macbook. The 2 pc's (one connect directly to the router) and the wireless one are working fine. Could anyone help me try and figure this out, its really a pain surfing the web on the macbook.

well...as per your post 192.168.1.3 is the ip add of the macbook .. as you are trying to ping the macbook from a different computer ... it doesn't actually reflect whether the macbook can load webpages or not ...
rather you should try pinging some website add from the macbook to check whether it is able to ping it or not...and as the other 2 computers don't have any problem i don't think it has anything to do with the router settings ..

  • WRT54G Problem with connectivity loss

Unit is 4 months old. ALL lights work. Used w/ Comcast Cable. Every 10 mins I lose total wireless function. I pull the pwr jack & it comes back up. It will not come back up unless I repower the unit. Cable box is certified ok. This is driving me out of my mind. It won't stay up long enough to write an email any more. It is 15 ft from my laptops. Other folks we know have them in their attic & they work all the way to the basement, so that is not a problem. This began about 6 weeks ago. We have Apple & Windows XP laptops & have the same problem on ALL units. It works fantastic until it goes out. PLEASE HELP ! ? ! ? !

If you have any wired computers, open the setup page, 192.168.1.1, and go to wireless link
under wireless we have a link for advanced wireless settings.
    change Beacon interval to 75
and also checkif you are using the upgraded firmware.
and also check whe you lose internet connetion is the power light blinking?
if yes, we might have to reset the router.

  • WRT54G problem with saving changes?

    Hello,
To all you people who have this router I need to know if you have experienced the same problem. My problem is that when i get to the wireless networking settings I try to change my network from disabled to mixed and it says it saved but it keeps going back to disabled and in which case I have a feeling that this may be a simple problem or a problem deep within the confines of the computer settings. If someone would help or at least telling me whats going on it all would be appreciated...

Did you set your wireless basic and wireless security?
In Wireless basic did you set your network name?
In Wireless security did you setup your security and key?
    Ex Change Linksys to Yankee.
In XBox you should see Yankee network in your wireless network list or profiles.

  • Network cable unplugged problem with WRT54G

I just got a WRT54G wireless router recently, and experienced some problems with it. There are 5 notebooks in my network using wireless card and 2 PCs connect to the router through cables. The router is with ver 7.00.1 firmware.
The router is working fine, the problem is sometimes it will show "Network cable unplugged" on my PC, and the whole network will be interruptted, the network will be resumed in few seconds and all machines need to get IP from the DHCP server again. It's quite annoying to be disconnected from middle of the work. I don't know what is the cause, seems like the router is re-reading it's configuration. I have tried to refresh the fireware but with no luck. Someone else got this problem before? anyone has a solution for this? Thanks a lot!
    Regards,
    Leo

Try the following tips to resolve your problem:
Disable the Ethernet network adapter if you are not using it. This applies, for example, when running a WiFi home network with computers that have built-in Ethernet adapters. To disable the adapter, double-click the small Network Cable Unplugged error window and choose the Disable option.
Check both ends of the Ethernet cable connected to the adapter to ensure they are not loose.
Replace the Ethernet cable with a different one to verify the cable is not damaged.
Update the network adapter driver software from the manufacturer's Web site.
Change the Link Speed and Duplex settings (using Device Manager) to use "100 Mbps Full Duplex" or "10 Mbps Full Duplex" instead of Auto Detect.
    Replace the Ethernet network adapter

  • Problem with two Xbox 360's being online at same time with WRT54GS router

Hey guys, I have a bit of an annoying problem. I have multiple 360 consoles which are occasionally online at the same time. When one is on, it either causes connection problems with the other or blocks the other from signing on all together. Both are using the official wireless adapters and are hooked up to my WRT54GS. Usually when one of them fails at the connection test, it's a DNS failure, but it has occasionally been an IP failure.
    I've already tried:
-setting them both up with static IPs. This caused NAT issues and didn't really fix the problem with one of the consoles kicking the other off.
-forwarding ports to one while leaving the other alone, setting one up in a DMZ while leaving the other alone, and setting one up in a DMZ and forwarding the ports to the other. All three trials showed no improvement, and caused NAT problems.
Also yes, I do have UPnP enabled.
    *sigh*
This problem has been driving me up the wall for months now. No one I've talked to has been able to figure it out. If anyone can offer me a solution I will forever be in your debt.

You can set a Static Ip on Both the XBOX and then login to your router and do Port Triggering, this may solve your problem.

  • Problems with a WRT54G wireless linksys router.

Hello, I'm having problems with my WRT54G linksys wireless router.
With this router, I tend to get lag spikes and often disconnect while playing online games at a certain time. The spikes usually get worse
    during the afternoon/evenings (2pm-12am PST).
    Some information about my setup:
    Firmware version: v.8.00.7
Shaw high speed cable (i think ~10mbit connect)
xp/vista OS (two computers linked up via router)
      - Both computers are connected via wire, not wireless
I've changed settings for my router through advice, but nothing seems to work. Nobody else is connected to my router because I get nothing
in the logs and the DHCP client list has only 2 IPs. I'm sure my router is the one giving me lag spikes because I sometimes connect my
modem directly to my computer (the XP) and receive no lag spikes. Someone does use wireless, but I turn wireless off at times so that
isn't the problem. I've also secured my wireless, so I know it isn't the problem.
Anyone know what's causing these lag spikes and how I can fix it? Do I need a new router?
If anymore information is needed, please do not hesitate to ask.

    Not so computer savvy

Try to readjust the wireless settings of the router...Open the linksys setup page and try the following settings...
    - Reduce the MTU size to 1364.
    - Change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.467GHz.
    - Under Advanced Wireless Settings,Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,RTS Threshold to 2304
Now,check the difference...If you are still facing the same problem then, try to upgrade/reflash the router's firmware, reset the router and reconfigure it from the scratch.

  • Problems with a WRT54GS

I'm using a WRT54GS router with a Dell Inspiron Laptop that's connecting using a wireless adapter and using an ethernet port to connect the Dell Desktop computer in my office.
I do not have a problem maintaining a network connection, or access to the internet, however when I try to retrieve files or use the printer that's on the desktop, I often get connection errors. The drives and the printer always appear but I get error messages quite often when I try to use them.
    Any suggestions?

try to disable any firewall or any Internet security software.

  • Problems with connecting to internet after power loss w WRT54G v3

I'm having problems connecting to the internet after a power loss with my WRT54G v3 wireless router.  I'm at the latest firmware version (4.21.1).
I found similar problems with the V2 version of this router.
After a power failure, I can access the http interface to the router, all of my settings are there (not set to factory settings),the unit is connected to my ISP provider,I can ping from the router, but none of my wired or wireless PCs can ping.
To "fix" this condition, I have to reset to factory settings, then re-load my saved configuration. This usually works, but sometimes I have to hard reset the unit.
Anyone having this problem? Anyone have a fix?

Sudden loss of power for extended periods of time will 9x out of 10 will corrupt the saved configurations and can only be fixed in the way you already described.
A solution for this is getting an UPS incase of a power failure your equipment will be on battery back up until either the battery runs out or power is restored (depending on the model changed the battery time)
