WRT54GS (v5.1) bricked

Hi!
I tried to find for the following problem a solution, I've searched the internet for an answer the last few days, all unsuccesfull.
I have a WRT54GS, hardware version 5.1. When I plug in the power cable the power LED starts immediately to blink rapidly, the DMZ and the WLAN LED remain dark, the Ethernet 1, 2, 3, 4 LEDs and the Internet LED are constantly on. The router remains in exactly this state indefinitely for as long as it is connected to the power cable.
Pressing the reset button does not help, also the 30-30-30 reset procedure does not change anything.
I tried to upload the most recent firmware for my model + hard ware version using TFTP, but no luck: if I connect my computer via an ethernet cable to any of the 4 LAN ports of the router, then the green network light of my network card remains dark (normaly it should turn green to show that a network cable is pluged in). Seting the network address of my computer manualy to a 192.168.1.100 (or something similar) and issuing a tftp command to upload the firmware does not succeed.
Does anyone know what I still make wrong? Or is my router unrecoverable?
Many thanks for any help,
- Martin

  • Is my WRT54GS v7 perma-bricked?

    http://blog.rim3y.net/zero/?p=942
I have a problem doing this step:
"Still holding the reset button, connect your router to the power cord.
…and STILL holding the reset button, keep pressing it more than 30seconds.
    Then release the reset button.
By the time you doing so, you can see there is a reply from your router."
Even though I'm holding down the reset button, the ping test I was doing in command prompt gets a reply even though it says it should get a reply AFTER I let go.
So ignoring that I continue and do the tftp command and it says "transfer successful". But my router does not restart and remains bricked even after reseting power.
I've been able to do the tftp command and get "transfer successful" every time with different firmware (dd-wrt firmware, linksys official firmware) but still nothing is happening.
The power light stays on but is very dim.
some more info if any of you could make sense of this:

Also, after this happens, the router is re-ping-able after taking the plug in and out but it still remains bricked.

If you had already resetted the router ... power down the router ... for few seconds then power it up ... Check the light status ... & let me know ...
Also if the Power light is still very dim...Possibly the router is gone bad ....

  • Adding zone dns edit to firmware

    Hi,
I have the WRT54Gs.  I bricked my old WRT54G trying to add zone edit dynamic dns to it.   I need to run a dns client for zone edit but would like the router to run it for me.  Any ideas how I can add zone edit to the firmware with out failure would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    PCWEBTeK

That's not really what I am looking for. I have a privet DNS zone set up on my server and would like to point a different zone to a different server while still using the root hints that are built into the dns server for everything else. take a look at this http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/NetworkServices_Adminv10.6.pdf
and search for Forward Zones it's on page 50.
This doc talkes about the ability to do what I am trying to do just not how to do it.

  • WRT54GS v7.2 firmware upgrade problem caused Router to "Brick"

    Hello,
I accidentally “bricked” my Linksys Router WRT54GS v7.2. I tried everything on your website to un brick it, but it still does not work. I have 5 solid lights (4 where the cat5 attaches and 1 internet light). I cannot log into the router and ping 192.168.1.1 does not work along with no network.
I took it apart thinking I can take a jeweler’s to a “short pin’s 15 and 16, but this has the Broadcom (not Intel)  chips so I do not know which one is the flash chip and what pins to use.
Can you advise? Can you tell me what flash chip and location?
    Thanks

Are you referring to this procedure? Have you tried 30-30-30 reset?

  • I just bought a WRT54G and it has already "bricked" :/

I just got this thing a week ago and last night it suddenly stopped working. I rebooted it, everything was fine. About 30 minutes later it freezes again. I reboot it again. This time it lasts about 5 minutes, and after another reboot it comes back with the power light flashing. The local area was still working at this time, but internet would not work. When I went to the web access setup screen on the router, all it had was a "Management mode, upload firmware." So I plugged directly into the net, downloaded the new firmware for it (I have version 8 btw) and tried to upload it at the router setup screen. It said upgrade failed. After that I got the remote upgrade software and tried to use that, assigned my pc a static ip just like the directions said, and used the program. It said it connected to the server and it was erasing the flash, but the progress bar never moved, and then it reports it failed with no responses from the server. Is the router toast?

Sounds bad, but it's hard to tell yet if it is bricked.  If it is bricked, it should still be covered by the warranty.
To try to fix it, do the following:
Download the tftp.exe program from this web site:
    ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network
Also, download the directions for using the tftp.exe program from this web page  (the directions are at the bottom of the page) :
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3703&p_created=11515...
Also, download (or re-download) the latest firmware for your router.
Set your computer back to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain a DNS server address automatically".
Next, you need to try to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Bricked WRT54G? Please help!

I have a old Linksys WRT54G V5, It does not work anymore. When I plug it on I see a white flash on the Cisco Systems light but it goes away, the power button blinks really fast, the ports 1234 lights are on steady and the 3 has a line above it, the DMZ and the WLAN lights are off, I can not ping 192.168.1.1 or get any connection to it. I really want to get it fixed!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Follow the steps bellow to Unbrick your Router. Try this trick to make your router up and running again.
hold down the reset button for about 30 seconds, then unplug the device, while you are still holding down the reset button.
leave unplugged for about 5 seconds, while you are still holding down the reset button.
plug the unit back in, while you are still holding down the reset button.
after about 5 seconds, let go off the reset button.
go to the webpage of the router.
you should see the special mode.
If you are able to see the special mode, Management Mode firmware upgrade, then you can download the firmware from the Linksys website and then upload the firmware on your Router...
Once the firmware is uploaded on your Router perfectly, then you need to reset your router and re-configure all the settings on it again.

  • Can't connect to router's admin interface (WRT54G v3.1)

    Hi.
I have problem with my Linksys WRT54G v3.1 router. I can't connect to its admin interface and broadband Internet connection doesn't work.
The power LED is flashing. When I restart the router or unplug and plug it again, nothing happens. The power LED just continue to flash and I can't connect to the router. I even tried to put new firmware but program that I downloaded from linksys.com can't connect to the router.
When I enter http://192.168.1.1 into Firefox or Explorer, I get "Connecting to http://192.168.1.1..." and nothing else happens.
I hope that someone can help me because it's pretty annoying that my home network doesn't work...

Sounds like your router is bricked, flashing power LED is not good.  Contact the RMA department and explain whats going on.  Your router has the Linux operating system.  When you talk to them make sure you mention this and you want the same router as a replacement which is the WRT54GL.  If you dont specify that you want the same they will send you a version 6.  Then you are looking at more headaches.
In the RMA form you have to add "ONLY" to the version box on the RMA form. That's because most customers prefer the latest if they have it, and they try to accommodate as much as possible. Rarely is there a need for a specific version.

  • Airport and WRT54G (LINKSYS)

Does any use the Linksys WRT54G with thier Mac? I bought one knowing it wasn't Mac compatable because I was just going to use it to play my Xbox wireless, but wanted to get airport down the road. I have an iBook and just wanted to know if anyone used it or if they had any problems. Thanks.

    Hey Guys,
Just wanted to update you on this process. After tooling around with some 3rd party firmware, some de-bricking techniques (mainly due to me not reading instructions!), and a bit-o-patience...I have my AX sucessfully working with my WRT54G, and the AX is working as my "wireless adapter" for the xbox!
As Henry said, it would be MUCH simpler to purchase a wireless game adapter...and use apple approved base stations (go figure!), but it can be done if you have some time and patience.
I really considered myself fairly dumb on how wireless/routers/etc interacted, and this whole experience boosted me into mild-network-guru status, "mild" being the key word.

  • WRT54GS won't connect (oddly enough, it gets info correctly)

Here's a strange situation:  I have a three-year-old WRT54GS that was re-flashed to the latest Linksys firmware due to issues with DD-WRT; however, no clients (wired OR wireless) can connect to the Internet via this router. It gets the settings from the cable modem (Motorola SB-5120 with Comcast HSI as the provider), and the clients can connect to the router itself (and see the router) without issues; however, the router's clients have no Internet connectivity.
Have I managed to *semi-brick* the router?
There are two PCs - one wired (Vista) and one wireless (XP with SP3); both have the same issues, wired or wireless.  (I've even tried swapping the wireless NIC (USB) to the Vista PC; no such luck that way.  Also, connecting the XP laptop via a wired connection via the router is fruitless.)
I'll be making one last attempt to re-flash via DD-WRT before giving up as a bad bet; however, I will be following this thread, as I don't want to have to buy another router because I managed to brick this one in an odd fashion.

UPDATE: Re-flashing with DD-WRT (V.24 vice V.24SP1) fixed the problem (the router is now allowing connections via both wired and wireless); however, I have two other (unrelated) issues (both wireless):
    1.  There are other wireless devices/EMI devices (specifically, both a pair of 2.4 GHz coreless phones and a microwave oven) in the room where the laptop is usually used (yes; it's usually used in the kitchen!), therefore finding a solid wireless channel is a priority.  Lower channels (the router is set currently to use channel 2) have less of an issue with the phones; however, router connectivity is an issue.  Higher channels (11 or 12) have better router connectivity, but they tend to drop connection whenever the phone is answered (not good at all).  Channel 6 is a popular channel for wireless devices in the area (therefore, it's usually one to avoid, even when all the networks are secured with WPA or better, as is mine).
    2.  While both wireless USB adapter and router (with DD-WRT) both support WPA2; they will not connect reliably with it (WPA, however, works fine).  The wireless laptop is running XP with SP3; is there a specific patch to let XP use WPA2?

  • Connecting WRT54G with Westell Versa Link router via wireless

    Hi,
I have a Westell wireless router from verizon which seats next to my phone in one part of the house.
I got very week signal from that router on the other part of the house so I decided to use a WRT54G version 2.2 router I had to improve the signal.
I can set up the WRT54G fine if i use a cable but I don't like that solution. It would be almost impossible for me to run the cable from one part of the house to the other.
So that let me with only one option. make the routers commuunicate with each other via wireless. I tried for several hours to make this work and I couldn't.
I would greatly appreciate it if someone could tell me if this is possible and if so what are the steps involved to make this work.
    Thanks in advance

    1. The results are far better running a cable than setting up a wireless bridge or repeater. Thus, unless it is really impossible to run a wire I would always prefer the wired option.
    2. A WRT does not connect wireless to anything else with Linksys firmware. It is a wireless router. They only provide an access point to which clients connect but the access point never connects to anything else.
    3. The only alternative would be to flash a 3rd party firmware. Those usually add repeater and/or bridging capabilities. See the wikipedia article on "WRT54G" for a start. Remember, a bad flash may brick the router.

  • WRT54G v6 Connection issue

The firmware that was shipped with this router (WRT54G v6) seemed to have a corrupt web GUI. So I decided to upgrade and fix the problem as well as get some added features.  I successfully flashed DD-WRT micro Generic v23 SP1 onto the router using TFTP and have had it running smoothly for about 2 months now.
Side note: In the process of flashing the firmware I had several problems, but I found the router had a boot-wait automatically setup. Eventually resolved the issue.
Apparently my roommate came to it one day and saw it had no connection. (Not knowing what to do) He hit the "Secure Easy Setup" button on the front, with no results.  I'm not sure if this button has any affect on the router since the firmware had changed.  Now I can't seem to access to router at all.  All 4 Ethernet connection lights steady on as well as the power light.
I can't seem to ping the router (using static IP and 10base half-duplex or otherwise).  I've tried power-cycling a number of different ways (including holding reset, power off, power on while still holding reset)  Although when I first start the router, the power light blinks for ~8 seconds for the boot-wait sequence.  I can't get TFTP to flash anything onto my router as I did before (from command prompt or GUI mode).  After trying these methods repeatedly and varied, I've about run out of options.
I'm sorry for the length of my post; I felt I should describe the situation.  I'd appreciate any help you guys could provide.  Let me know if there is any info I've neglected to post.

Well you can just send it to Linksys and see what they do and if they do it under warranty. Either they simply reflash the firmware with tools they have available and never notice or they notice and let you know that they won't do it for free. In the latter case you just let them know that they can keep it. As you are planning to buy a new router anyway you don't really loose anything except a bricked router (O.K. some spare parts maybe...).
I am not aware that all v6 routers have a broken GUI. Maybe your router was bad from the beginning...Message Edited by gv on 06-09-200710:53 PM

  • 2 WRT54G's - which one to be main router, which one to be repeater?

I currently use a WRT54G v.3 router with one computer connected via wire and other devices accessing wifi.  Wifi signal is weak in various parts of the house and doesn't extend to the backyard.  I have another WRT54G router (ver 6) that I want to use as a repeater.
Based on research I've done, it sounds like the v.3 router is better suited to accommodate DD-WRT firmware, whereas if I try to do this with the ver 6 router, it is more sensitive and likely to be bricked.
    Should I do the following:
    - replace the v.3 main router with the ver 6 router as the one connected to the DSL and to the wired computer
    - change the firmware on the v.3 router to DD-WRT and utilize this one as the bridge?
Is this the proper approach?  I strongly prefer not to purchase a dedicated repeater if I can use the 2nd router to do the job.  Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can try that if you don't wish to purchase an additional equipment like a Range Expander or an Access Point...

  • WRT54G v3 and BEFW11S4 Problems

It started off like this. My WRT54G Suddenly Bricked on me out of the blue. I dont know what caused it. So i hooked up my old BEFW11S4 to find a way to unbrick the Wireless G And i remembered it had the same wireless settings as the Wireless G. the Wireless was working fine For a while but it started timing out. so i get on the computer thats hooked up to the router via ethernet and i noticed the act/link light was blinking at a rapid rate but windows(vista) was saying the connection had little to no connectivity and couldnt ping the the Router. So i reset the router and it was acting wierd the Power started blinking and thats all, then i held the reset button even longer, but it came back on so i set everything back up and I quickly looked for a way to fix my wireless G, and it worked i got my wireless G back working. I set everything back up changed the router password, SSID and set it not to broadcast because I thought someone got into my router and started changing things. After a few hours the wireless G started acting strange again so reset it and it started Restarting By its self while the Powerlight constantly blinks. i held the reset button untill Dmz light came on nad the router stopped resetting itself. so i used the TFTP program from the site and it said the flash was successful and the router stopped responding. (I had cmd window running  ping -t 192.168.1.1)The router restarted and it went back to what it was doing before, constantly restarting it self.
I hooked the Wireless B back up and that rapid blinking activity light was bothering me so i restarted the computer while the computer was  off the like was still blinking. so when windows finished starting up i changed the link speed 100mbps full/half duplex made the the router blink but it stopped when i set it to 10mbps full.
Is it possible that one of my computers is causing my routers to act strange?

Well try upgrading the firmware of the router & keep on holding tightly
the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the
router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power
cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!
Also, the advanced wireless settings to Beacon Interval=50,Frag
thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet Requests & it will definately work!!!

  • WRT54G v5/6--- the answer to d/c!!

    DD-WRT v23 sp2
I went from being d/c every 1-3minutes to going over one day w/no disconnects!!
I am using a v6 router, and have absolute stability and TONS of control... the setup of DD-WRT was not simple, so this will not be a viable solution for novice users... but if you have faith in yourself and your skills, and PATIENCE then try it out
there are MANY warnings about bricking/killing your router using this file incorrectly... but luckily stayed calm and used it and IM happy to report AWESOME results.... over 1 day and no drops!!!!

Good job...  I have been using DD-WRT for about 6 months myself.  Have V23 SP2 standard on my WRT54GL v1.1 and WRT54G v3 setup as a wireless bridge.
A lot of people will rush the process and brick the router.  Need to take your time and let the process do its own thing.
    Congrats to you two.
