WRT54GS V6 Issues

Hi Everyone I've recently purchased the WRT54GS V6 Router and everything was working fine until a couple of weeks ago. The Cysco yellow light turns off and I have to reboot the router in order to get back online. I have F/W 1.5.2 loaded. However before the router completely loses connections things start to get really slow to the point where internet surfing is almost impossible, then if you try to access the router admin page (192.168.1.1) unable to do so. So I have had to on several occasions not only have to hit the reset button but also power cycle the router, and 2x I have lost all my network key settings. I've spoke to Linksys Tech and they have no clue and everything they've suggested I've already tried. Any suggestions?

Connect the computer directly to router using Ethernet cable…. Access routers set up page using http://192.168.1.1 ….you will get username & password screen …leave username blank & under password use admin.
Click on wireless tab….. Change network name (SSID) – non Linksys name.
Change channel –1 or 11 ….click save settings.
Click on wireless security sub-tab under wireless tab…. Change the security mode to either WEP or WPA …click save settings.
On the wireless computer try to connect to new network name …..if shows connected status try going online.
If not then let me know the exact error message you are getting while connecting to network.

  • WRT54GS Connection issue

I have been using a WRT54GS without issue for the last 3 years. Two weeks ago a problem arose which stopped the router from opening new connections after some arbitrary amount of time. Thinking it was just an age issue i quickly went out and purchased the identical router only to hook it up and find an identical issue. The problem causes both wired and wireless connections to lose the ability to create new connections to the internet any old connections opened, for example an online radio station or an online game continue to work if they were opened before the issue arose, I can not however open new connections. After the second router proved useless i figured it must be my internet connection so i bypassed the router and hooked up my connection directly to the back of my computer, no issues. I have already updated the firmware of both devices to no avail, any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated after already wasting the $50 on the second WRT54GS and losing the receipt to return it i would prefer to avoid spending more money on a new router if possible, thanks.

Hard reset your router to factory settings and then re-configure it...To reset the linksys router press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...

  • WRT54GS firmware issues

    Hello all,
I have a befsr41 now for about 6 years and it has been great.  I recently purchased a WRT54GS to replace it, so that I can have another wireless access point, along with TZO.
I installed the 54GS and manually copied all of my port forwards from the BEFSR41.  Things seemed to work.  I was on firmware 1.50.6.  I upgraded to the 1.52.0 and suddenly all of my port forwarding stopped working.
Not exactly sure what to do, so I stuck my BEFSR41 back in and everything went back to normal again.
Any sugestions, other than backrev?  I upgraded because I did have issue getting an IP address from my provider.

    Nopers, did not work.
I did get some aftermarket firmware to load on my router that seems to work much better than the Cisco/linksys firmware.  .
    Thanks for the help anyway.
    Sincerely,

  • WRT54G VPN Issues

I just purchased a WRT54G v8 to replace my old wireless router.  I need to be able to use the wireless connection to connect to my business VPN.  I can access and use my VPN (Cisco) when I am connected to the router via cable, but I cannot use it when conneted over wifi.  Over wifi I can connect to the VPN, but I cannot see any of the resources over the VPN nor can other users on the network see me.
I have not had this problem when connected over wireless at many other locations so I have ruled out issues with the wireless adapter on the laptop.
I have all VPN pass-throughs enabled on the router and I have firmware version 8.00.2 installed.
    Please help.

    5. VPN pass through on ur router is enabled or disabled?

    OK, here we go...
    1) When I have a good cable connection with vpn active there are two additional entries when I run netstat.  They list ports 2540 and 2641 for the local address and 1026 and 1334 for the foreign address respectively.  I'm not real educated with the whole port forwarding or controling ports at all for that matter.
    2) I currently have Block Anonymous Internet Requests and Filter Multicast checked.
    3) Current MTU is set to Auto.
    4) Beacon Interval - 100, Fragmentation Threshold - 2346, RTS Threshold - 2347
    5) All VPN Passthroughs are enabled on the router.

  • Linksys WRT54GS setup issues

Good day all and sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.
I recently bought a computer off of a friend which came with a WRT54GS router, which I am having issues setting it up.
I have the setup disc version 6.0.  I get to about step 8 and I am asked for a password, whichIi never set up.  I have seen on here a few places that suggest the default is admin, but I am not sure if that is for a secure log in or the set up.  Any rate, admin doesn't seem to work.  I have looked elsewhere on the forum and found that i can hold the reset I can default the router's factory settings, but this doesn't help either.  If it is useful,I have also cleaned the drives and installed a new OS (WXP), so I don't believe it is any lingering PC password type of issue.  This is my first rodeo with a wireless setup, so any info that you all may have would be most helpful.  Thanks!

You don't have to use the CD to set up the router. Just configure it manually. Follow these links for instructions, depending on your Internet Service Provider:

  • Wrt54gs setup issue

I have just purchased the wrt54gs router to replace an old Microsoft router.  When I run the setup off the included CD, right after the router is configured, I get an error saying the router cannot connect to the internet.  I know I have connected everything as I should (cable to modem, modem to router, router to PC) and power up in the correct order.  When I connect the modem directly to the PC, the internet connection is great.  When I look at the face of the router the "Internet' light is on and flickering as if is receiving a signal.  What should I do?  Anybody have a similar issue?

Did you try cloning your pc's mac address ? Some ISP lock the mac to the first pc connected to the modem .

  • Wrt54G compatability issue

Recently I have been unable to connect my PC with my wrt54g. When I try to connect to my linksys I get a response the settings do not match the settings required by the network.  Any suggestions on how I can fix this issue?

Remove all the preferred network on the computer and try to connect the wireless network again.Make sure that the password (network key) you are typing is correct.

  • WRT54G DNS Issue

I just bought a new WRT54G after my BEFW11S4 v4 crapped out on me. I set up the new router, to the best of knowledge, the same way I had my BEFW11S4 v4 set up. When I try to hit any site I am redirected to my ISP's support page (http://register3.vzavenue.net/VerizonAve/lzone/index.html). If I remove the router from the equation and run my vzavenue connection through my PC w/out the router, I have no problems getting anywhere. I have tried setting the router to factory default (read: wide open) and I still have the same issue. Any body have any ideas? I have tried rebooting both the modem (sometimes they can cache MAC addresses) & the router. I have tried manually setting my DNS to the same DNS that I get when I am connected directly to the modem (ipconfig /all). And I have set the DNS option in the router to use the two DNS #'s from the ipconfig.
I would greatly appreciate any help! Thanks!

go to the "internet Options" of your browser,(IE) , and then the connections tab , then to LAN settings and disable all/any proxies.

  • WRT54G Connection Issues *Odd!*

    Hey All,
Before I begin, I'll just say now that I do have some networking experience and have tried both 'Googling' and searching for an answer on my own.  Ok, on to the problem.
Host Computer (Desktop): Windows XP 32-bit
Wireless PC (Desktop): Windows 7 32-bit
    Router: WRT54G Firmware Version 8.00.8 build 001
    ISP: Optimum Online (Cable)
Router to Wireless PC distance: approximately 15-20 feet, same floor.  2 Wooden doors between them.
Issue: The wireless PC (running a Netgear WPN311 Rangemax Adaptor) is having frequent connection drops and latency issues.  I've upgraded the firmware, hard rebooted, changed the wireless channel, moved any objects emitting a frequency away, and reset all settings to scratch.  I've deleted all wireless profiles off my PC (then added the correct one) and made sure to change the settings so it does NOT connect to a stronger signal network.
Now here's the odd part.  About 80% of the time I get a drop or extremely low signal I notice the wireless PC picks up a phantom network with the name "linksys".  The network has a poor, unsecured connection.  Is it possible my router is emitting 2 SSID's??  I'm pretty frustrated with the drops as it (of course!) happens when I'm in a game or watching some online videos using significant bandwidth.
    Any help would be appreciated..Thanks!

Set your SSID to something unique. Lower down the MTU. Increase the Beacon Interval found in Advanced Wireless sub-tab.

  • Linksys wrt54g setup issue

    hello all,
ive recently setup a cisco modem with a linksys wrt54g i had lying around for a friend.   i enabled the security (WPA/WPA2) and changed the name for the wireless connection. I restart every thing and i see the new name wireless secured connection but unfortunately a while later i see that the original unprotected 'linksys' access point still available. ive tried resetting the router and doing the process over a couple times. first by enabling the password and then changing the name and vice versa but i always see the unprotected access point show up again and again and its driving me crazy. i know its my router as well because when i disable the router both connections are lost. so basically my router is showing 2 names.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks!

Did you try removing the entire preferred network from the preferred list? If not then try to remove the entire preferred network from the list and then check it still shows the default network of the router “Linksys” or not. Here is the link for removing the preferred wireless network from the list:

  • Can anyone help with a WRT54G connection issue - it just stopped working

I have a Dell running Windows XP.  I have a DSL connection with a Westell 6100 modem connected to a Linksys WRT54G router connected to my main computer.  I use the router for a wireless connection to my laptop.  This setup worked fine for years - until a few days ago.  I no longer have internet access on my laptop and main computer.
If I connect from the modem directly to the main computer, I have internet access.  But as soon as I put the router back in - I have no access.
All the appropriate lights on the modem and router are lit.  When I do try to access the internet I get the dreaded PAGE CANNOT BE DISPLAYED.  When I run the diagnostic, the error log shows: "Not all base service provider entries could be found in the winsock catalog. A reset is needed".  I don’t know if this is a standard catch-all error or not?
Everything was fine until a few days ago when I just lost access.  Do I need a new router?  I hate to buy one and then find out something was corrupted on my computer instead. :-(
    Thanks!

When connected from modem to PC directly (no router) and I type in ip[config /all (don't know if this is what i should do) -- I get:
    IP Address 192.168.1.100
    Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway 192.168.1.1
    DHCP Server 192.168.1.1
    DNS Servers 192.168.1.1
Does this mean I should try to change the LinkSys Router?
I will go look there next.

  • Wrt54g connectivity issue

I have a wrt54g, it will only let two computers connect wirelessly at a time...Anyone got any ideas?  Thanks in advance

It should allow 32 wireless computers to connect wirelessly...What is the problem you are facing on the other wireless computer while trying to connect wirelessly...If you are using the network name as "linksys"(default) then, try to change it to some unique name...Make sure that you are typing the correct Security/Network Key while connecting to the wireless network.

  • WRT54G v4 Issues

    Hello,
I have been using WRT54G v4 for about 4years, it has been working smoothly throughout the years.
Recently, I have problems connecting to the internet. Whenever I switch on my router, I have to reset
it in order to get connected. I am tired of resetting my router every time I switch on.
Is there any ways that I can fix it? Can someone tell me what has cause this problems?
    Thanks!!

The 218.186.X.X address is a global address class, your true Internet address given by your ISP.
Your router NAT/PATs this address to a 192.168.X.X private address class, that is your local LAN address.
I've had a similar problem with a router after frequently rebooting the router because of troubleshooting. The router just did not receive a IP from the modem. Leaving all global IP information blank. Might be a software bug, you should check out if you have the same problem after reboot.
In that case a firmware upgrade might be a solution, as dudztgp said.

  • WRT54G Router Issues

I am currently connected to a cable modem and have 8 other computers connected to the internet via the Linksys router and network adapters. There is no problem with the cable modem it is connected and functioning properly, the router is experiencing difficulty picking up the IP address, and the error message continues to say "limited or no connectivity" when I attempt to transfer the cords to the router to get the rest of the house online. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It seems that you are using all eight computers wirelessly …in that case if you are facing problem on all systems the issue related to router…. Try this setting
Open router set up page using http://192.168.1.1 …..You will see username & password …leave username blank & in password use admin.
Click on “wireless” tab….. Change channel to either 1 or 11….save settings.
Click on “advanced wireless settings” under wireless tab….do this setting:
    Beacon Interval – 75
    RTS & fragmentation threshold – 2306
If you are facing the problem only on few computers check the Ip address on all & if using any secure network see the key is correctly used or not.
Let me know if it is helpful or not.

  • WRT54G connectivity issues (ram problem?)

I've done everything I can to try and figure out what is wrong, but unfortunately, all I've been able to do is narrow down the problem with something internal with the router.
    WRT54G v3.1 Firmware Version: v4.21.1
    RCA Cable Modem
TimeWarner Road Runner Cable Service ~6mbps
This is at my parents house, so I'm not actually around all the time, but it happened earlier this afternoon. The router will respond to pings, wireless signal is ok, the router pages load, I can change all settings. But from any computer behind the router, I cannot access anything outside, nothing makes it past the router. Unfortunately, I don't have anything I could put between the router and modem to sniff what kinda traffic is going between the two.
The same things happen regardless of wired or wireless.
I've tried sniffing traffic, doing pings and nslookup and tracert and such, and the router responds, but nothing after that. If I go into the router diagnostics page, I can do tracerts and pings from there, and everything seems to respond fine (gateway, dns servers, google.com, etc).
Power cycling the router doesn't work, and neither does resetting the modem (and any combination thereof). The only thing that seems to work is resetting the router completely with the button on the back (which of course resets all settings and I have to change them back, which is a pain, and has thus caused my family to leave the router wide open with factory default settings.
I'm considering custom firmware... I know my way around linux, I'd say my level is intermediate, so I'm not too concerned about that, but my family doesn't, so I'm not really sure what firmware I should use.
Thanks for reading my long post, hope someone can help!
Edit: Reason I suggest problems with RAM because I've read in various places that the router keeps connection history for a long time, and the router tends to die when my family runs torrents, when the most number of connections are made. When it died today, no torrents were running, but there had been a larger than usual number of wireless clients because of thanksgiving break, and having guests over.
Message Edited by coreno on 11-23-2007 04:48 PM

Your WRT54G has 16 MB of RAM.  Many of the newer WRT54G's have only 8 MB of RAM, and they seem to be more prone to the "torrents" problem, although it appears that any Linksys router can potentially have a torrents problem.
Obviously, the router should not work in the way you described.   Perhaps the firmware has become corrupted.  I would suggest that you re-download and reinstall the latest firmware for your router.  After reinstalling the firmware, you will need to reset the router to factory defaults.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
After resetting the router to factory defaults, I would suggest that you simply connect it to your cable modem and see if the problem recurs while using all default settings.   Also, during this test period, do not let anyone use "torrents" or any other P2P programs.  Assuming that this corrects the problem, the next step would be to begin using torrents, and see if that alone will cause the problem.
    Hope this helps.
