WRT54GS v7 firmware options

Hello everyone
I am using a wireless Linksys wrt54gs v7 and for the past few weeks I have been loosing internet connection on my laptops about once a day to were I have to pull the power on the router to reestablish my connection. This is happening on 2 different laptops so I feel confident that they both don't have bum wireless. I was thinking about reflashing the firmware on it and thought if I was going to do this I would look into some 3rd party firmware. The trouble I am running into is that it appears from what I have been reading is that after version 4 they dropped the flash from 4mb to 2mb which seems to be the stopping point for all the 3rd party firmware. Are there some out there I missed that are worth while to look at or is my only option to stick with the Linksys firmware. It is not a show stopper but I would like to know my options
Thank you in advance for any advice given.

Whats the current firmware version of your router. As of now the latest firmware for WRT54GS v7 is Ver.7.50.5, Which you can download it from the Linksys website, and your can re-flash the firmware of your router again. Once you re-flash the firmware on your router, you need to follow some setps on your router, i think it might solve your problem.
Once you sucessfuly upgraded the firmware on your router,Press and hold the reset button for 60 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 60 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router... Here are some settings which you can set on your router to make your wireless connection stable.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
-Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
- Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bits.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • WEBSITE BLOCKING ON WRT54G V6 (Firmware Version: v1.02.8)

    Hello Friends,
Short: why some webpages block and others don't using this feature in my router?  As mentioned above, I run a small office and  am using an ::: WRT54G V6 (Firmware Version: v1.02.8) ::: router.
For instance, I have been successful in blocking sites such as "sex.com" and others.  Also, in blocking sites by keywords such as: news, music, vid, nude, etc.  BUT, when I try blocking FACEBOOK or TWITTER either by URL or keyword, guess what: IT DOES NOT WORK...!
Any ideas why this happens and how can I be successful in configuring this feature???  I will appreciate this!  Blessings...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Those sites have a random connection and DNS entries. Your best bet would be to use a DNS servcie like DDNS.com or OpenDNS.com service. Point your router to one of those DNS services and there DNS addresses, then set up one of those services to block FB and Twitter. If you use there DNS addresses on your router instead of the ISP DNS, and you block FB and Twitter, users should beable to get to FB or Twitter after that.

  • WRT54G updating firmware problem

I am trying to update a WRT54G v5 firmware using the TFTP.exe.  When I enter the ip address (192.168.1.1) and my password, select the FW_WRT54Gv5v6_1.02.7.011_EN_20090727.bin file, click "Upgrade", I get "unable to get responses from server".
I am able to connect to the router via IE.
    Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I have a similar problem but neither  via webpage and tftp.exe do not work.
I need to do an upgrade because my webpage looks like ... it was mostly empty. Most of information is missing. And it looks like this on different computers, different softwears (firefox, ie, chrome, opera) and even deferent ethernet (I also tried to set it in my sister house, she has a differenet internet provider)... I can't tell when it happend. Once I just wanted to change wi-fi settings and it was like that.
After some trying (looking inside the source of page) I finally get to the page you should browse and browsed an upgrade file but OFCOROUSE "upgrade" button was also invisible and absent....
    So...
I've read some more and found the solution: tftp.exe. I've download that, tried... and had the same problem. The information is: "unable to get response from server".
Guys, I really do not know what to do... I don't like the idea to buy a new router but I'm getting afraid that this is the only solution...
PS. If such problem was ovewritten somewhere else - I'm sorry. I could not find any similar. That's why I'm waiting.
I would be very happy for any help, and if someone is from Warsaw, Poland - I can buy a beer
PS 2. sorry for such plain and poor explenation, but I'm only a "lady"
    Best,

  • WRT54G v5 firmware that contains service name option?

I noticed there are some firmwares out there for WRT54G routers (maybe different versions 3 or 4 , etc) that do indeed have service name option added.
However,  when I update my router to the latest firmware it doesnt have service name option.
Is it possible to add the service name option to version 5 WRT54G routers?
    thanks

I don't think so that there is some service name provided with firmware version (either 3 or 4 ) on the linksys website .........the software is only a .bin format file ...........
I will suggest you the router or the firmware version didnot require any service name ..........

  • WRT54G V7 firmware?

    Hello all,
I have been having a few problems with my new WRT54G. Mainly an intermittent connection to the router over a wired connection. Sometimes every few minutes, my pc loses connection to the router then it gains it again. I have tried looking at the help on the Linksys site about changing the MTU (appartently the default 1500 is where it should be for my network). That didn't work so I looked at the next (and only other) option which was to upgrade the firmware.
The current firmware I have is v7.00.1, May. 4, 2006. However, upon trying to find the firmware release on the Linksys site, I find that here is a V6 and V8 option but no V7 option. So is there a firmware release for V7 or would V6 or V8 be ok?

well....you would find the firmware file on www.linksys.com/uk

  • WRT54G v8 firmware that does not block ports?

Hello everyone! Is there a 3rd party firmware for the WRT54G v8 router that does not block ports or has the option to disable port blocking? I would like all ports to be open on all devices in my network. Thank you!

This setting is not recommended because it opens your entire network to attack.  Instead, you should selectively open only the ports you need to play your Internet games.
People who open all their ports often get their computers infected with viruses which send out spam.  When your ISP sees you sending spam, they will turn off your email, IM, or even disconnect you.

  • WRT54G / upgraded firmware, unable to access across subnets

    Hi,
I have a network with 10 WRT54G (v6) 's.  Recently I upgraded the firmware on two units from 1.00.7 to the latest 1.02.2 and am experiencing some network wierdness.
The wireless routers are connected via the LAN port to a linux router which is a firewall/bridge between subnets 10.1.3.x & 10.1.1.x.  I have rules in place to allow my workstation to http to the 10 routers and disallow everything else.  All of this is logged.
I cannot from my workstation (10.1.1.x) access the web interface on the two units I upgraded the firmware on 10.1.3.x).  I can still access the web interface on the remaining units (10.1.3.x)
I can however access the web interface from the same subnet to the newly upgraded units.
I can see from the firewall log that the packet is making it out correctly and tcpdump verifies this.
Does anybody have a clue what is going on.  I feel like it would be best to return to the previous firmware, but where do I find it???
    Thanks,
    Lee

    Hi Lee,
logon to ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/ and download the previous firmware version and try downgrading the firmware...

  • Wireless-G Model WRT54GS V7 Firmware 7.50.0 - easylink Advisor 1.5.1044

    I have a Wireless-G Model WRT54GS V7.50.0 Firmware for easylink Advisor 1.5.1044
Connected to a highspeed connection, and then connected (Hardwired in port 1 of router) to a Dell system running XP SP3.
I bought a new Laptop that is running Windows 7 and the laptop causes the connections to drop when it is powered on.
Then the laptop is always dropping the connection and re-establishing the connection. Is this problem because of windows 7?
If I do not bring the laptop up, i can run the desktop with no problem. Running WPA security mode.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
    John

Is your Desktop computer is a Wired or Wireless? Are you facing the problem only on your Windows 7 Computer or on all the wireless computers?
You can try to change the Wireless Settings on your Router and check if that makes any difference...
Login to the setup page of your Router and click on the Wireless tab.... and below change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.462GHz and click on Save settings.... Then click on the Sub tab "Advance Wireless Settings" and below Change the Beacon Interval to 50 .....Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 ....Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Can't connect to WRT54G after firmware update

I just tried to update the firmware on my WRT54G (version 8.0) and have not been able to connect to the router since then. The firmware said that it had been updated successfully, however I have been unable to connect since it reset itself, and the Ethernet and Internet LEDs are all constantly on even though nothing is connected (the power light on the other hand is behaving normally, not blinking or anything). I have tried resetting the router by holding down the reset button for 30 seconds, but this does not change anything, the router still cannot even be pinged. If anyone can give me any help at all with this, it will be very much appriciated. Thanks.

It sounds like the router might already be dead.  But there is always hope that you might be able to revive it.
You need to try again to reset the router to factory defaults.
To reset your router to factory defaults, use the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, try the setup disk (or setup the router manually, if you prefer), and see if you can get your router setup and working.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state your ISP, the make and model of your modem, your router's firmware version, and the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • WRT54G v6 firmware upgrade under Vista problem

I'm not sure if this is related to Vista or not.
I downloaded the correct firmware version for WRT54G v6 and selected upgrade using the web interface. After a few minutes, the browser directed me to a site with the following URL
    http://192.168.1.1/upgrade.tri
My IE7 had problem displaying this page and the Power LED on the router kept blinking. I tried to connect to the web interface and it was still showing Firmware Version: v1.00.9
I don't think there is anything wrong with what I did and not sure if the upgrade was successful. Any suggestions?

I had the same problem. I found the solution here http://www.scorpiontek.org/portal/content/view/27/36/1/3/:
This could be because you are accessing the router over HTTPS. You cannot upload firmware or settings to a WRT54G v5 over a HTTPS connection unless you have Linksys firmware v1.00.9 or later. Try accessing it using just plain HTTP.
Enabling and using http instead of https worked for me. No need to reset or reconfigure.
    I upgraded from 1.00.1 (IIRC) to 1.02.2.

  • WRT54GS V7 Firmware version?

Hi all! I've recently bought a WRT54GS V7 cable router/access point. Now, given the problems I've had with previous devices, I'd like to make sure that the firmware is completely up-to-date. However, when I go to the Linksys UK website, and find the product download page, I am asked which version of the device I have. I have version 7, but it is not in the list. Interestingly enough, when I clicked on version 6, and then looked at the firmware version details, it said something like "for version 5 only". My router seems to have version 7.50.0 firmware installed. Maybe this is the version which they all have, and there are not yet any updates available. Does anyone know? Thanks Michael

Change the default country to US.
Well, I thought I'd tried that already (although it makes no sense to me - I bought the item in the UK).
However, when I look carefully, I notice that my location is being changed back to 'UK' whenever I try to navigate to the 'Technical Support' page. So this time, I've cleared my cookies, it works, and I can find the file.
Someone from Linksys might want to get around to updating the UK page, and sort out the location changer so it actually does change when you tell it to. I'm sure that I'm not the only person in the country to have bought one.
Anyway, thanks for the help, and for the quick response!

  • WRT54G V5 firmware

    Hi All,
Can anyone tell me why the web site at linksys is now showing firmware version 1.00.9 for WRT54G V5 dated May 2006?
I have been to the site and picked up firmware version 1.01.1 dated Nov 2006 around Christmas. I went to check today to see if a new version was available and it is now showing the older one.
Why was the later version removed? Should I be reinstalling the older version?
    Specific answers would be great.
    Cheers
    Habbie

Usually Canadian ISP's works well with US based firmwares since they are  treated as one and the same anyway.

  • WRT54G with firmware 1.01.1 and Vista

Has anybody tried connecting wireless using Vista Home Premium with a WRT54G v5 using firmware 1.01.1?  I have tried to get this to go and can't ping the router.  I can get this to go using firmware 1.00.7 using someone elses unsecured network.  I have tried forcing in an IP address, default gatway, and DNS server into Windows Vista network set up  These settings work on the other network but not mine.  I have tried disabling the firewall in the router and the wireless security.  Any ideas would be appreciated.

If I connect a cable to the router I can do surf the web or access the router ui.  I can ping the router.  If I try to use wireless, there is no connection to the router.  Resetting the router does not help.  Re booting the router is no help.  I can connect to another network (unsecured) and surf so I know the wireless is working.  I have even tried another router (not Linksys) and that is no help.
I have upgraded now to firmware version 1.02.0 and still can't connect.

  • WRT54G V8 firmware 8.00.2 no WLAN

Hello, I have recently purchased a WRT54G router, which stopped working earlier today. After getting some advice to upgrade to the next firmware level (8.00.2) It hasn't worked since. The WLAN indicator light will not come on. While updating, the internet connection may have been lost. I was curious as to whether or not the original firmware would fix this problem, and if so where could I download it.

reset the router to factory defaults...check whether the firmware is upgraded to 8.00.2 or not .. if not , try upgrading the firmware again
