WRT54GS WEP Security Issues

I have used a WRT54GS for a few years with MAC filtering but no other security.  A few months ago, I decided to add WEP security.  While using WEP security, my wireless connection would go from an excellent signal to dropping randomly.  Additionally, internet browsing would be very slow at times to the point of being unusable.  When I disabled WEP, these issues went away.  What should I look at to troubleshoot this issue?
Thanks.

  • Airport Express to extend network - WEP security issue

I have an existing Time Capsule based wireless network (set to WEP Transitional Security). I just bought Airport Express with the intent to extend my network. The TC is set to allow the network to be extended. I also set up the Airport Express to extend an existing network - however, I am not sure what security protocol to set since WEP Transitional is not an option. I chose WEP 128 but it resulted in the Airport Express hanging when it tries to update and restart. If I chose a WPA protocol it does update and restarts fine. iTunes recognizes this as a speaker. However, I'm not sure if this is a correct setting. Also the Airport Express does not show up in the list of wireless networks to connect (which I assume is the way it should work).
I went through the discussion board but could not find any solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to the discussion area, Katan!

    That is the correct setting.
Also the Airport Express does not show up in the list of wireless networks to connect (which I assume is the way it should work).
That's correct. It's extending your wireless network, so you'll only see that wireless network as a choice to join from each computer or device.
Your computer will automatically connect to the device with the strongest signal, which is almost always also be the closest device unless there are major obstructions involved in the signal path.
Post back if you are interested in checking to see which device your computer is actually connected to at any given time.

  • C4580 Wireless Networking Issue - WEP Security Key not accepted.

I keep getting this error whe doing network setup on my new Photosmart C4580.
"Your wireless rounter requires a WEP secuirty key. The security key configured on your printer does not match exactly. Reconfigure your wireless network WEP security key for your printer."
I have downloaded an updated installer. I have tried to access the printer via the IP address to make the change. It is never updated. When I run the Wireless Network Test Report it also shows it fails. I am entering in the first WEP security key (Index 1). I know the key is being entered correctly. I have even copied and pasted it. Nothing works.
    Help Please!

    Jim:
Thanks for your comments. I think you may be right. I have more information now. I installed a later version of the C4500 package (to fix another problem where the PC Firewall and internet access was disabled for 3 mins at startup), and the network setup/diagnostics are different in the newer package. After installing this the first time, everything worked - I mean everything, even scan from printer. During the Network Setup the wizard found only one network (mine). However, the Wireless Network Report said it had detected two.
However, the next time I switched the printer on, it never connected. Network diagnostics then told me that the PC and the printer were on different networks, 192.168.0.0 and 169.254.0.0 and that this usually results from two close networks with the default router manufactures SSID. This is not the case here - I am in any case in a very isolated country farm!  It also (predictably) said the WEP was wrong. At one point in the diagnostic I can see it's trying 169.254.196.213.  There's nothing on my network other than 192.168.0.*  Attempts to reconfigure the network again show that there is only one network detected on-air, and no duplicate SSIDs, but the same result in the diagnostic - crossed-networks. Even re-installing the software won't fix it now. Whereas before I could at least print/scan from the PC and only the printer 'thought' the network was dead, now the network really IS dead and I am left with a USB-only setup.
I think you may be right that the printer somehow 'remembers' a phantom/ghost network. What I need is some way to hard-reset the printer. I saw in other postings that you know something about this, at least on other printers. Alternatively, I need a way to set the printer network parameters, including hard-coded IP address, over the USB but WITHOUT the router radio on, then switch it on and let the HP network setup wizard find it over the radio. Any ideas on that one please?

  • Intel 5300/5350 Intermittent Wifi Solution - Don't use WEP security!

I recently purchased a Lenovo T400 with the Intel 5350 wireless card (same as the 5300 but with WiMax), and, like a lot of other people on this forum, I could not get the wifi to consistently work. I spent several frustrating days searching these forums and trying pretty much every solution offered (XP 32 bit, Vista 32 bit, Vista 64 bit, w/ & w/out Access Connections, w/ & w/out Intel software, Lenovo drivers vs. Intel drivers, etc.). However, in the end, the solution was totally unrelated.
What I found was that when I was using WEP security on my Linksys WRT54G router (v5 w/ the latest firmware) I could not get wifi to work consistently. In most cases it was hard to get it to work at all. In other cases it might work after a reboot for a few minutes, then stop working again. However, as soon as I either turned off security or changed it to WPA2-Personal, wifi worked like a charm.
I was originally thinking about returning the laptop, since no wifi makes it pretty much unusable. But, with this finding I think I will keep it. Since it is obviously a driver issue, I'm going to assume there will be a driver update in the near future to fix the problem.
Hope this helps some of you who are having the same problems!

That is a fascinating solution to the intermittent mess the Intel cards can go into. Never would have thought secrurity and encryption would affect the performance.
For what it's worth, go into the properties of the wireless card in Device Manager. Go to the Advanced Tab. Set "Roaming Aggressiveness" slider to the lowest, "Power Managment" to lowest, and "Transmit Power" to highest. These were solutiosn that I've run across and fixed the problem for me (I have the regular 5300, hope you will get to use and enjoy WiMax).

  • VPN with WEP security?

I have a desktop WinXp pc networked through my WRT54GS router to a laptop pc and HP IPAQ PDA. The IPAQ is 802.11b only so I am stuck with WEP as my security at this time. Would setting up a VPN through Hamachi solve my security issues if I continue to use the IPAQ, which is the weakest like? Thanks.

    Hi……
Well the WEP is a certainly a good security you can use in order to secure you wireless network. Though not as secure as WPA is. However, the encryption is setup for the wireless connection
And Hamachi is VPN software which uses some sort of firewalls which is also a secure network. And you can use the Hamachi VPN software along with the WEP Encryption.

  • WRT54G Ver 6 Issues

    Hi
I hope this helps people.  I am extremely disappointed with Linksys support.  I have talked to at least 6 support people for a least 1 hour each without a resolution to a simple problem.  My problem is that I can not get onto the internet with my access points(WAP54G .ver 3.1)using WPA security with WRT54GS ver 3.  I decided to do my own testing since Linksys did not.  I configured my WRTGS with no security.  I used my ssid, channel, broadcast ssid turned on.  I configured my WAP54G exactly the same.  I was able to ping the WAP54G with no problem.  My next test was to test WEP security.  The only changes I made were the exncryption to 128 bit with a code on both the WRT54GS and WAP54G.  I was able to ping it with no problem.  Since I needed more security for my house since the houses are almost right on top of each other, with many people using wireless in their homes, I changed my security to WPA Personal.  I changed the code and of course saved all of the changes, like I did previously.  I tried to ping the the WAP54G.  I couldn't ping it to save my life.  I figured that the hardware was up to date on the WRT54GS ver 3 so I purchased a new WRT54G ver 6 router thinking that this will support WPA Personal. (I already knew that WPA Personall worked on that Router with version 1.01 of the firmware.)
I noticed on the Linksys website that there was a new firmware for the router which is version 1.02.  I had to update the firmware on my router since the version that was on it was 1.00.52.  My firware is now 1.02. I started the same tests I performed on the WRT54GS ver 3.  I turned off security on both the WAP54G & WRT54G.  I tried to ping the WAP54G.  I could not do it.  Now I know the WAP54G worked because I proved it earlier.  I reported the problem to Linksys and asked to talk to a supervisor.  I never received a call back from her.  This is the lousiest support I have ever expereinced.  I explained to tech support that the WAP54G's are no use to me since I can't talk to them with this router using WPA security or anything else.  It was extremely frustrating dealing with their technical support.  This is suppose to be a simple setup that should take about 5-10 minutes.  Instead it has cost me days of calling them and many hours, trying to figure why it did not work with absolutely no help from them.  Does anyone have any good suggestions?
I would like to get a hold of firmware 1.01 because I know that works.  Thanks
    Scot

    Hi,
This is an update to my first post.  I was correct that ver 1.02 of the firmware for the WRT54G ver 6 of the router has some problems with it.  It does not allow you to use WPA encryption.  Version 1.01 of the firmware does allow you to use the WPA encryption.  Hopefully Linksys will fix this problem.  I will continue to use 1.01 until this is fixed.

  • WRT310N - Wireless WEP Security

Has anyone had problems setting up WEP security on the WRT310N router?  When I configure the router to use WEP, then I cannot get any of my wireless devices to connect to it.  If I disable security everything works fine.  However; I don't feel very comfortable without security enabled.
Any ideas on what I need to do to correct?

I made the keys very simple for testing...that wasn't the problem.
I was just about to give up and return the router to the store...when I decided to try to a couple of hard resets on router.   After resetting the router...
I finally figured out, that if I put the network mode on 'Mixed' (because I have wireless B,G, and N on my network) and set the standard channel on '11' regardless of whether the Radio band was set to 'Wide' or 'Standard', then I was finally able to get my wireless devices to connect.   This time around, if I tried to put the standard channel on 3 or 6, then my wireless computer would give me an error message saying my wireless network was not in range.   It seems Standard channel 11 is the one that works best for me.
The only outstanding issue I have is that my Wireless-N devices do not seem to be any faster than Wireless-G.  They are receiving around 54 Mbs, same as G.

  • Rv042 change wep security to wpa2

i have a linksys rv042 router and it currently has wep security enabled.  i need to change it to wpa2 for pci compliance.  i cannot find anything about this in the user guide, tech support says the warranty is out, and the web management console has nothing about wi fi at all.  there is no other wi fi on the network, i have two dlink switches and a cable modem.  please help me, it's been two days on an hour long job.

the only things connected to the network are a small cable modem, the rv042, a nettrend switch, two telephony modems(no rj45), and a dlink switch in another room supplying the printer and a laptop.  since the switches are dumb, and the cable modem is just a modem and not a router, the rv042 is the only thing that it could be. we traced all wires physically and there is nothing else hooked to the network in the building.   the reason i know it's not another wi-fi network (there are several on the list) is that the server machine was talking to the other machines while they were hardwired.  i am getting the same info as you, that the rv042 is not wi-fi capable, but there is no other choice.  can an internal antenna be placed inside?  the guy that set up the network said it had an internal antenna, but the technician working with him cannot be reached and he is not technically literate.  i have solved the problem by purchasing a 2950 switch and when it gets here, i will set up a seperate vlan for the pos machines, but it still bugs me that i couldn't figure out the issue and they need to get the wep turned off.

  • Other web browsers and security issues?

Since even an Apple KB article recognizes the need for an additional browser and because of Safari's limitations and problems, I'm going to try switching to another browser (most likely OmniWeb and am looking at Firefox, Shira and Opera also though perhaps not as a primary browser) but I'm wondering about their ability to keep on top of any security issues for Mac? (and how do you keep up with security updates?)
Though perhaps unfounded, at least with Safari, I feel that Apple has a vested interest in keeping on top of security issues (for Safari and Java) and I can readily find out about security updates via software updater.

Most of the other Mac browsers have their adherents. They are all good browsers (I have 7 browsers installed to test various web sites and for change-of-pace usage). They all have their strengths and they all have their weaknesses. Only iCab and OmniWeb are still shareware, the rest are now or always have been free (Opera just recently stopped charging for its browser).
I have settled on Firefox as my alternate browser and I use it maybe just a tad more than Safari, but I do switch back and forth between them. The Mozilla foundation is good at getting security updates out when needed. Firefox has a button on the toolbar to check for updates. One nice thing about Firefox is that you can install free extensions which enhance the features available. I have one to supplement tab features, one to control iTunes from Firefox's status bar, one to help me format messages in discussion forums, and one to block ads.
I prefer OmniWeb for doing intensive research because of the way it handles tabs in its sidebar, showing me which ones I've looked at and which ones I haven't, and giving me great flexibility in rearranging tabs, which are viewable as thumbnails or text names (I have had up to a hundred or so tabs open in OmniWeb.
Shiira is good and its fast. I have not checked for updates for a while, but the last time I updated there was still a problem with Shiira kicking you out of logged-in sites when you moved from page to page with in web site. This may have been fixed by now - they were aware of the problem back then.
Camino is a native OS X cousin of Firefox and is also fast, but is not updated as often.
I would stay away from Mozilla or Netscape unless you need all the additional modules they have and which take up hard disk space. Firefox and Camino represent the browser module of Mozilla/Netscape. Mozilla and Netscape have modules for email, irc chat, newsgroups, and for creating and editing web pages. Netscape is a branded and slightly customized version of Mozilla and is not updated as often.
Opera is a nice browser and some use it as their main browser, but I have not seen anything that really stands out for me, but that does not mean it is not worth a look.
I would stay away from abandonware Internet Explorer.
As for checking for updates, several of them, as with many Mac programs, now have a menu item that allows you to check for updates. Most of them also announce their updates on both VersionTracker and MacUpdate.
    Happy Exploring.

  • Security Issue with Apple ID

Today while using my iphone and trying to use facetime for the first time since updating to IOS6, my phone asked me if I wanted to use some email address that I do not have for facetime. What? The message pretty much said that this email address was linked to my apple ID. So I got to work logged into AppleID.Apple.com and saw the email address verified and also saw it displayed as an alternate apple id. Immediately, I changed my Apple ID password and called apple at 1800myapple since that is the number on the website and try to talk to someone that could assist me with this severe issue. Anyway, my iphone went dead and the people on the phone couldn't connect me to anyone because I couldn't give them a serial number to an apple device. I tried to explain to the technicians that this is a problem with my ID and that the alternate ID has access to everything that my Apple ID has access to. Both times the call went nowhere. This is ridiculous. Why can't I talk to a security team? Why is the technician telling me that I can manage my ID from the website, when I know that I am looking at the website and I cannot remove the alternate ID? How did this ID get associated with my account and why did I never receive an email informing me of the change?
Since Apple has other services and not just products STOP ASKING FOR A SERIAL NUMBER AND ASSIST THE CUSTOMER WITH THE ISSUE especially since it is a SECURITY ISSUE.

oh man, I know exactly what you're talking about. i have a relatively easy to guess apple id email and everybody in the world thinks it's theirs... but once I turned on two-step authentication, the emails stopped completely.  here's a faq about it:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5570
once i turned that on, whenever they'd want to reset my password, they would get asked for my recovery key, which they don't have, haha!  victory is mine.

  • Can no longer use WEP security on my G3 clamshell

This morning I updated OS 10.3.9 with the security update that was just released and now I have to disable my WEP security. What happened? My G5 still works fine with my Airport Extreme base station
    G3 ibook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Still hoping for some help. After updating Panther with the 2006 02 security update, I can no longer connect to my wireless network with WEP security activated. Internet Connect finds the network, and Airport is turned on, but it just spins and I have to do a force quit. I have the network and the base station passwords in my keychain, so it doesn't ask for them. My G5 hooks in fine. As soon as I turn off WEP security, resetting the base station from my G5, the G3 ibook connects automatically. I went to a lot of expense to upgrade this old iBook (Panther, airport card, new battery, upped the ram to 320 megs) and Apple suppposedly still supports it with Panther. I really don't want to be providing internet access for the whole neighborhood.

Why would you make a new account?  This will likely cause many problems.  Just get you old account enabled.

Everything you purchased with the old account will always be tied to that account.  You will have to authorize the computer for that account and you will have to update the apps from that account.
