WRT54GS Wireless security two routers (WDS)

2 WRT54GS
Wireless connection between routers.
No1 SSID test (connected to ADSL modem) disabled security
No2 SSID test1 disabled security
After some hard work I was able to make a wireless connection (50m/150ft) between two WRT54GS routers. But when I enabled security (WPA-TKIP) on the router (test1) that is't connected to the ADSL modem, it could't connect to intenet anymore, only to the secured router (test1).
I would be very happy for some tips how to enable wireless security on both routers.

I took over a project that was started a while ago and the fore some reason it was't finished. The only thing thats left is to secure both routers.
Wireless Distribution System (WDS) compatible? Yes

Under the tab WDS I just added the wireless mac from the other router.
test added test1's wireless mac address as LAN
test1 added test's wireless mac address as LAN

My friend has the same router and we haven't noticed a WDS tab in the setup page of this router. Can you mention the exact firmware version installed on your router?

  • Wireless bridging two routers

I have two routers. an airport express base station bought this earlier this year and a linksys WRT160N router. I am looking to bridge them wirelessly with the airport acting as the main router. It is upstairs with the broadband modem. The linksys router I have I would like to use downstairs and connect the bluray drive, directtv wireless box and xbox to the system. I have looked on the internet to help however I am still stuck on trying to have the linksys router "connect" to the airport and relay that signal.
I think the thing that gets me is not being able to correctly label the static IP address inputs. Under internet settings It asks for Internt IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS1 ( 2 and 3) are optional. In addition there is an option for network setup and that asks for Router IP address and subnet mask and DHCP server setting (which i assumed is disabled). Can someone help? Thanks in advance.

The issue is that most non-Apple routers are not compatible with Apple routers when it comes to extending their Wi-Fi range via a wireless connection ... and this is true the other way around.
The only option to extend your Linksys with the AirPort Express is to interconnect them by Ethernet and configure them for a roaming network.

  • WRT54G Wireless security setup

I'm having some trouble setting up wireless for this router.  I set up WEP and entered a passphrase.  When i try to connet to the network it asks for the passphrase. When i enter the phrase it says the network security key is not valid.  Any ideas on how to fix this.  Tx in advance

With WEP, you must enter WEP "key 1"  (found in the router)  into your computer, not the WEP password or passphrase.

  • Connecting two WRT54G wireless routers - how to configure

    Hi All,
I have two WRT54G wireless routers. One is currently providing wireless access for several users at a local law firm. I need to connect a second wireless router for a user who works for another company in the same office. The second wireless router is basically going to be used for Internet access. The Office Manager at the law office does not want the user from the other company using their wireless router directly, BUT they will allow me to hook up the second wireless router for Internet access. I realize this doesn't really make sense in terms of security, but this is the scenario I must abide to. So I am wondering how to configure the second router. I am thinking that I connect a CAT5 from one port on the first router to the Internet port on the second router. I am also guessing that I need to assign the the second router a static IP with a different subnet such as 192.168.2.1. I am not sure if the first router still has the default 192.168.1.1. If the first router does use 192.168.1.1 would I need to change the IP on the second one to one on another subnet? Thanks.

You will need a setup like this:
    Modem  ---  new WRT54G  ----  existing WRT54G
                     192.168.2.1              192.168.1.1    ( "Local IP address" )
Modem connects to Internet port of new WRT54G.
LAN port of new WRT54G connects to Internet port on existing WRT54G.
SSID:  different on each router  (do not use "linksys" )
SSID broadcast:  enabled on both routers
encryption:  recommend WPA2, or at least WPA  (can be same or different on the two routers).
    passwords:   different on each router.
channel:  try to stay at least 5 channels apart.  Usually channel 1, 6, and 11 work best, but any two different channels can be used.
Any "port forwarding" used by existing WRT54G must also be done on new WRT54G.
Both routers need a real login password (not "admin" )
New WRT54G will need "Intenet connection type" set to whatever is currently on existing WRT54G.  Internet connection type for existing WRT54G will need to be set to DHCP.

  • Connecting Two WRT54GS Wireless To A Cable Modem w/ TIVO, PS3, and Wii

Not real great in the networking thing. Upon reading I have found that you can only use WEP on a wireless adapter pluged into a TIVO (series 2 that is christmas gift to wife) to connect it to the internet, and as a concern of having to downgrade my entire network on my main router to WEP I looked for a solution. I read somewhere that if you cat5e from the TIVO into a WRT54GS you can then use the router to send wireless with WPA (or WPA2) to another WRT54GS that is cat5e  into the modem. To complicate things I am giving my kids a PS3 and a Wii for christmas and wanted to connect it to the same router as the TIVO.  My internet is Charter Comunications cable. The two routers are Versions 5 and 6. The TIVO is remote and I cannot get cat 5e cable to it so I need to use wireless. All distances are ok for wireless. The "main" router that is plugged into the cable modem is a ver.6 and is set in DHCP. All "gifts" are wrapped under the tree so I can't set those components before christmas. I would like to setup the routers to speed things along. I have a laptop (hardwired ) to the second router to set it up. Two other computers and a HP printer are connected to the "main" router. All computers are Windows XP -SP2.
    Questions:
    1. Can this be done with these components and keep security on the "Main" router maintained?
    2. Upon reading these boards it sounds like I should split my system into two seperate routers with the second one passing thru the main router. How would this be done? What are the settings? Reserve addresses for static in the main router to use in the second and run as one system? Remember I am not to good at the network thing... so be complete in the explaination.
    3. If I do things as indicated in question 2 will that leave my TIVO, PS3, and Wii open to attack to the internet? Any way to better secure?
    4. Any pointers as to how this really should be done would help. Any better ideas in setup??
    Thanks.......

Yep, I wanted to connect them wireless but it sounds like I cant without some issues.
Second choice: Cascade--  Connect routers by Cat 5e and make the second one a WEP that has the TIVO, PS3, and the Wii connected wireless to it. The main Router would have the computers and printer connected to it. The main router would be WPA (2) protected for a wireless laptop.
    Is the second choice possible??
Should the second router be with static IP's??  Is this the best way to do this with these types of items connected?
I think this will make two wireless systems but if I make the second one a DHCP enabled one then I think it might cause conflicts with a chance of both routers picking the same IP for a connected item. What is the best method for doing this and keeping some type of security??

  • WRT54G keeps resetting the SSID name and wireless security

Over the past few weeks, my WRT54G (which I've had for about 18 months) has been resetting itself by changing the SSID name back to the default "linksys" and losing wireless security. I have updated the firmware.
Any ideas of what is going on here?
    Thanks.

After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
Routers seem to be sensitive to electrical surges and noise. This can cause them to loose their settings. You should keep your router plugged into a high quality surge suppressor with EMI/RFI filtering, such as the Belkin SurgeMaster Gold Series. A surge suppressor alone is not enough because surge suppression does not start until the voltage exceeds 330 volts. Alternatively, most UPS devices have both surge suppression and EMI/RFI filtering.
If this does not prevent your router from "forgetting" its settings, then the router is malfunctioning, and it should be replaced. A router that forgets its settings is not secure.

  • WRT54G V8 will not let me set wireless security

I'm attempting to do a manual setup of a WRT54G V8 (i.e. not using "SES" or the windows-based setup program). However, when I go to the "Wireless Security" tab, it refuses to let me select anything other than "Disabled" for the security mode setting. Any other option will just set the pulldown back to "Disabled". Any suggestions? No other settings seem to affect this.

As you are able to access the routers set up page ….click on “Administration” tab…..click on “Firmware upgrade”
Download the latest firmware version 8.00.02 from http://linksys.com/downlad  ….upgrade the firmware …reset & reconfigure the router.

    I'm using a WRT54GS v.5.1 with the latest firmware (v1.50.9).

  • WRT54G Strange connection issue when wireless security is enabled

The model # is WRT54G v2.2 with firmware 4.21.1. I knew that my internet connection was good because I connected my laptop directly to the wireless antenna. When the antenna is connected to my wireless router I can't connect, wired or wireless. I decided to reset the router and program back in the changes that I have made. I checked for internet connection after the reset, it's there. Made more changes, still good. Then when I enabled wireless security using WEP the wired and wireless internet connection goes away. Any ideas to fix this. Can I go back to the previous version of firmware?

hi... go to ftp.linksys.com/pub/network and try downloading older firmware for the router and downgrade the firmware, after that reset the router back to factory default settings and reconfigure it...

  • Connect two routers-wireless

Hello, I am looking around the forums and can't find and i'd like to know next:
I have two routers Linksys (wrv200 and wrt110). One on one side of the house, the other will be at the other side od the house. Questions:
    - Is it possible to wirelessly connect second to frist
    - Second willl broadcast the same SSID (wireless and other settings) as the first and will have the function of covering the signal on the other side of the house and outside, where the first virtually could not
    - Which one of these two routerja recommend as the first (connect to a modem)
    - What is all need to set athe first and second routerj
    Thanks for help.

You cannot connect two Linksys Routers Wirelessly, you have to have them connected with cables...see this

  • Connect two routers wirelessely

I have two routers SRX 200  and WRT300N and want to connect them wirelessly. First of all would it be possible to do that and 2nd will it increase the coverage? I will appreciate for your response.

Both your routers have better signal/speed capabilities compared to the normal G routers. However, you can't connect them wirelessly.

  • Two routers WRT54Gv4 & WRT54GS --wrong ones?

I have two routers that I purchased new. The WRT54G v4 and the WRT54GS that I thought would resolve my problem. Apparently not! I have a Dell Windows XP Pro and a Sony Vaio laptop WinXP Pro that I want to have have connected at the same time sharing a Verizon DSL line. I am unable to accomplish this. Can anyone help? Do I have the wrong products to accomplish this?

You only need one router unless you want to use the second one as an access point.  One router will take care of sharing the internet for many PC's and/or laptops.

  • Best Wireless Security Settings-WRT54G Linksys Router

I've been running into problems attempting to set the wireless security settings for my router and then trying to connect to the internet from my iBook. As long as I enable SSID broadcasting I can find my router but the problem starts when I enable the security settings. The iBook will then ask for the password and nothing I've inserted works??? I'm at a loss. I've given up, those sorts of brickwalls can do a number on your head--major headache this weekend..so I will try again tomorrow. I thought the passphrase is your password--the only thing that I haven't tried (after searching the forums here) is putting the $ in front. Does anyone have this particular router that can give me some suggestions (in basic, simple terms please) that can help me get started on a good security setup so that I won't be scared someone in the neighborhood (as I've read previously) is scanning and can log onto my internet connection. Thanks!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Why in heaven would you want WEP to secure your network when you can have WPA which is more secure and doesn't have this kind of problems???
With the right tools (available free on the net) you can crack almost any WEP protected network in less than a day (I have done this with my friends to prove them how weak WEP is).
So imagine you set your WEP protected network, a neighbor crack it and use it, all of this while you CAN'T use your own network.
You should try WPA, good luck...
BTW: I have the same router, with WPA and SSID broadcast disabled.

  • Connecting 2 WRT54GS Wirelessly

    I have a client with 2 WRT54GS routers.
They have two different ISP's and don't want to buy a RV042.
They don't want to balance Internet service, they just want to use the routers to extend the network range.
They use Internet Mac Address filtering to prevent one ISP from being used.
How do I get both routers to talk.
I setup the same Wireless Security settings and key.
I setup the Wireless MAC addresses in the filter table.
They don't seem to want to see each other.

Well Routers are basicaly Transmitters and Recievers but they major in transmitting. So essentialy you can't make 2 router talk to each other. Linksys did not design them to be so. But there are 3rd party firmwares that allow the router to support such feature. I do not advise it to though becuase it will void your warranty and free technical support.
