WRT54GS, WRE54G & Comcast Troubles

Howdy, folks. Here's the set up:
Charter Communications Modem > WRT54GS -> WRE54G -> Me
The signals between the points are good, as I've used NetStumbler to verify signal strengths. The problem is that sometimes the modem will drop out and reset its IP address, but the router is not compensating. Under the 'Status' screen of the router, it says the Internet is 'Disconnected'. Sometimes the router hoses up completely and I can't even get to its IP. Both the modem and the router has to be reset for it all to come online, and sometimes every piece of equipment has to be reset.
At first we thought it was the modem, so we had Charter replace it. About the same time the range extender had a heat stroke and we had to replace it.  We're still having the same problem, however, and since the modem/router, range extender, and myself are all in different buildings, it has become a PITA to reset the things every time we experience a problem (daily, often 2-3 times a day). Before we replaced the range extender, the modem/router didn't have as many problems, which leads us to believe that the range extender is somehow the culprit.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be causing the WRE to interfere with the WRT? Sometimes it happens when there is a lot of throughput activity, such as downloading something, watching streaming video, or updating software, but it seems to act better when the activity is lowerl (generic web surfing).
All firmware is the latest and greatest.
Please help!

What is the version number of the router and which firmware you have downloaded ?
Try to adjust the wireless settings on your router...
On the Linksys Setup Page...Click on the wireless tab...
Wireless Network mode should be mixed...Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and then, Click on "Save Settings"...

Go here to download your Linksys Program. This is more up to date then the CD anyway. You can always make a CD with the program too.

  • Comcast Troubles with RCA modem and WRT54G

Can anyone help me set up my router with comcast?  I have searched the web endlessly trying to find a fix to set up my router with my modem.  When my computer is hard wired into my RCA modem thinks work like a breeze.   AS soon as I connect my router things go south.  I have endlessly tried cloning Mac address, power cycles (removed battery), to no avail.
    Currently I have
Comcast Triple Play with an RCA Modem
    Linksys WRT54g running Tomatoe firmware.
Im wondering if the firmware is the issue, or perhaps I am missing a step with that firmware.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I have no knowledge about tomato firmware and how to configure it. However, configuration should be the same with Linksys firmware. It might be on a different tab or different name though. Here's the configuration.

  • Regarding a WRT54G: Firmware and trouble with Vista

    Hey all,
First of all, this is my first post here on this board so please don't have me assassinated if I skipped some board rules/policy. I'm trying to find a solution to my problem a.s.a.p.
My first question is: what's up with the firmware versions and my router's modelname? When I bought the router I got it in a box saying WRT54G (v1.1) with firmware version 4.30.7. As a first step getting the problem described below solved, I downloaded the latest Linksys  firmware for a WRT54G v1.1 from this website. After the firmware update my router now seems to be known as a WRT54GL and next to that my firmware version number didn't increase, it deacreased to 4.21.1. I don't know about you guys but this doesn't seem logical to me. Any explanations? Also the firmware's date seems to be somewhere back in 2006, isn't this a bit outdated for 'latest' software?
Now onto the next subject: the fact that my Acer notebook keeps losing the wireless signal since Vista. The wireless connection between the router and my notebook has always worked very fast and flawlessly when I ran XP SP2. However, as soon as I install Vista, something odd happens. With the same drivers for my wireless chipset (they're for both XP and Vista) either my notebook keeps losing the wireless signal or the router has trouble providing my Vista notebook with a steady signal. For 30 to 45 minutes I seem to have a steady signal with 5 blocks filled on Windows' signal'O'meter and then suddenly I get disconnected from my router for like 10 seconds to 1 minute. At first it says my connection turned from "local and internet" to "local only" and after a few seconds the entire signal is dead and the wireless tray icon gets covered by that little yellow triangle. Without interfering it'll take up to a minute at most and the connection will be back as it was before. However, this minute is just enough to mess up skype sessions, downloads, streams, you name it. To be honest, I haven't got the faintest idea what might cause this. Does anyone of you have?
    N.b.
    - I think I've noticed the issue occuring more frequent during high bandwidth usage like downloading with 2.5 to 3 MB/s but I'm not very sure about that.
    - My notebook hasn't moved an inch over the past years and there are no other devices added in my house that might interfere with the signal.
    - I've tried all the eleven channels.
    - I've set up a dualboot system on my notebook with XP SP2 and guess what, problem is gone when I use XP SP2 again.
    - I'm using an Atheros AR500G wireless adapter.
    - I'm only using Acer's drivers for the wireless adapter, not their useless resources consuming utility that "manages my wireless settings". Which seem to be Acer's words for slowing sh1t down a lot!
    - I'm using exactly the same internet security software with Vista as with XP SP2. Turning this software off won't help in any way.
    Any help is much appreciated!
    Thanks in advance,
    G.

First thing which you can check is the Model number of your Router. Flip the router upside down and below you will find the Model number of your Router and version number. Make sure it is WRT54G or WRT54GL. As you have mentioned that previously the firmware on your Router was 4.30.7, Basically that's the Firmware version of WRT54GL Router.
Since you have already upgraded the firmware on your Router, Have you resetted your Router and re-configured all the settings back on your Router? If not then you can do it now.
While Configuring the settings on your Router you need to change the Wireless Channel to 11.
Now you can try to connect to your Wireless Network and check if you are able to go Online.
The model on the router itself says WRT54G.
I've already resetted and reconfigured the router several times, doesn't help. Also tried all the 11 channels.
And yes, I am able to go online but the problem described in my first post still exists. I don't see why switching channels would solve it anyway since it's clearly a problem caused by the router in combination with Vista, it's not signal strength related. But like I said, I tried all the channels anyway.
Is it possible for a Linksys employee to take a look at this topic? Are there some known issues with a WRT54G and Vista and/or an Atheros AR5005G chipset? Is my hardware and software supported by the WRT54G at all?

  • Linksys WRT54GS + WRE54G - some questions

    Hello,
    Thank you for this forum.
I want to buy wireless router Linksys WRT54GS with WRE54G Range Expander for my organisation (small office) and before I have some qustions.
First, how much users WRT54GS with WRE54G can support correctly at the same time work in internet?
WRT54GS (with enable DHCP-server) will be on 3-th floor and WRE54G like repeater signal of WRT54GS will be on 2-th floor.
Usually, all users at the same time work on the 2-th floor (about 5 users), but in theory there will can be 10-15 users maximum (2-th и 3-th floor or only 2-th floor). Will this hardware work propertly without bags or I must see other solutions?

You can even have more than 15 wireless clients connected to your wireless router and range expander at the same time without any lags...

  • Problem connecting wrt54g to comcast

I just got connected to Comcast on a Motorola Cable Modem SBVS220.  I have a linksys WRT54G with the latest firmware.  I've set the linksys to factory default settings.  The modem connected directly to computer works great.  When I connect the modem to the linksys I have no internet access.  The ip I get from modem to computer is 98.212.248.70 subnet is 255.255.240.0 and the gateway is 98,212,240,1.  When the router is connected to the modem the internet light is not on.   Do I need to change my settings on the router or is it messed up?
    Thanks,
    Jeff Sollars

Yes. You need to change some settings on the router. Here's the procedure.

  • WRT54G / WRE54G Problem with Security

    Greetings-
I check in the KB for a while and didn’t find a compatible subject.  If it has, apologies for the double post.
Prior to the change, I had two laptops connected to the WRT54G Router using WEP.  Everything worked fine.  We decided to turn a room upstairs into a small office and installed a desktop there.  The wireless range was poor so we bought a WRE54G Extender to help with the situation.
After a few failed attempts, I found and followed these detailed instructions posted here (thanks!) and got the desktop and my friend’s laptop, who helped me with the upgrade, connected to the router with a very strong signal from the new room.  We were able to use WEP and we used the same credentials we had with the existing configuration.
    http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Range_Expanders&thread.id=692
When we tried to reconnect the two original laptops to the network, as much as we tried, we couldn’t.  Either laptop saw the router and the router reported being secured.  We could not authenticate with the same credentials we used for the desktop/friend’s laptop.
We had no choice but to disable security and in doing so all four devices were able to see and get out on the Internet.  As you can imagine, this is not something we want to leave permanently.
Would any of you have a suggestion as to how I can solve this issue?  Many thanks in advance
    Claude

    Try this -
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your Expander, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...
    1. Connect your Expander to a computer, click on the Start button >>> Settings >>> Control Panel >>> Network Connections - Right click on the icon for Local area connection and go to properties- On the 'General' tab select 'Internet Protocol TCP/IP' and click on the Properties button- Select 'Use the following IP address'- Provide IP Address - 192.168.1.5, Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0...Click on Ok button to Save and Click on "Close" on main Properties window...
    2. Now open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.240.
Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...It should open your Expander set-up...
    3. Once you get to the set-up page you can follow this link to change the Expander Settings...
    4. While changing the Expander settings you have to make sure that the Wireless Settings(SSID/Network Name and WEP/WPA Key) are identical on both the devices(Router and Expander)...Also make sure to change the Expander's default IP to match your network and Gateway Address should be your Router's address...ex. Expander's IP Address : 192.168.1.240(assuming your router's default IP Address is 192.168.1.1), Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0, Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1...
    5. After configuring the Expander you should disconnect it from the Computer and go into Local Area Connection TCP/IP Properties and set it back to Obtain IP Address Automatically...Disconnect the Expander from the computer and power cycle both the devices(Expander and Router)...Your Expander should be configured...
In case if you don't get the Expander set-up just leave it connected to your computer and reset it for 30 seconds and follow Step 2, Step 3, Step 4 & Step 5...
    Hope this helps.

  • WRT54GS - WRE54G - LG Blue Ray BD-390 Issues

Ok... So finally after about 10 hours of messing with the WRE i finally got it to connect to my network.
I'm currently having issues connecting my BD-390.
After 4-5 calls with linksys and 2 calls to LG, they both keep telling me to call each other.
Well, i finally got my WRE54G to link with my WRT54GS.
I cannot ping into the WRE but i have all the ssid settings and ip settings to match, but whenever i try to connect to it with my iphone, laptop, or LG Blue Ray player, i cannot pickup a IP address from it or my router. (I know its basically like a repeater, so its actually trying to communicate with the router to assign a ip address)
All 3 items of hardware are running the most up-to-date firmware.
Any suggestions? This is becoming a royal P.I.M.A.
    Jeff

First thing which you can try is, Turn Off the Power from the WRE.. Then you can try to connect to your Wireless Network and check if you are able to go online through the Wireless Network. If you are able to go online, then it might be the problem with the WRE....
Turn ON the Power to the WRE....and check the Light Status on WRE, Both the Lights on WRE should be Blue. On your Computer which is connected to the Router, Open the Command Prompt window and Ping WRE and check if you are getting any replies.
Whats the Distance between the WRE and the Router.

  • WRT54G and Comcast Cable Modem Setup

Please help.  I just bought a LINKSYS WRT54GS and I'm trying to set up a wireless network for my laptop (No other computers on network), and my ISP is Comcast.  The model # on the Comcast Broadband Modem is DHG535-2 and the manufacturer is RCA.  The computer sees the network but only shows a local connection.  No internet.  I have tried everything and it will not let get on the internet.  I have checked all cables several times and the connections seem to be right.  I don't know where to go from here.  Can someone please help me?  I will be very grateful!
    Thanks

Is your problem related to getting on the internet in general?  Or are you able to get on the internet, but now you need to get the wireless network setup?
    1) There might be some lights on the cable modem that indicate if it is successfully connecting to the internet.  On mine(a different model/brand) I have three lights that must all be lit up to indicate I'm on the internet.  Whenever they are not all lit up, it is usually an indication that either there is a problem with comcast's network, a problem with my coaxial cables providing the Comcast service, interferance (one time they had to come out and replace some of their equipment at my apartment complex, if you have analog cable and look at the lower channels on your cables TV, 4-10,and there is lots of static, then this might be a problem, a tech told me those channels are close to the range that internet is provided on, so static on them can indicate problems that would also effect internet0, or the lights not being lit up might indicate you hagve registered that modem on their network.  There is some sort of process that you have to do when you first get comcast internet service that gets you setup on their network.  I believe it registers the MAC address of your cable modem.  If the lights are not lit up(this is where you need to refer to your cable modem manual to see what lights indicate problems), then you may need to go through this process or check with Comcast.
In my case I had a CD from comcast in the Startup Package, had to connect cable modem to my PC via USB(what a freaking pain), and then go through the software's wizard to get setup on their network.  This also installs some junk on my computer like a usb driver.  Additionally, I had a computer with two network cards, and the software would not work correctly on it(kept choosing the wrong network card.  I had to actually remove one of the cards, and then go through the wizard.
    2) You should be able to connect the cable modem directly to your computer via CAT5, to see if you can get an itnernet connection that way first.  This will at least verify that you can get on the internet before you intreduce all the other variables of the router.  If you can't get on this way.

  • Comcast trouble

Just started with Comcast wifi. All works fine on computer, but not on the iPhone4. While the email works fine, Safari search is not working. Nor can I open any attachment that is included in an email. I also suspect that there are other connectivity issues. Comcast wants to sell me a $40 support package (called something like "Premium") for help. Is this a common problem? I'm ready tto switch to Verizon.

Is your Comcast wifi as part of your modem? If so, I have read of a number of problems with that. However, some of the issues you describe are unusual. You say email works, but you cannot search in Safari. Can you use Safari for regular surfing of the web? What kind of attachments are you trying to open? Have you checked the wifi settings and ensure you are getting an IP address for your device, and also that your DNS is working?
I guess I don't understand your statement about switching to Verizon. Is this switching for the phone, or for your home Internet?

  • WRT54GS- Browser Config Trouble

Hello all, this is my first foray into wireless networking, and it's been a real time. I've had all types of trouble. Possibly the most troublesome is how messed up the browser config/setup pages are. First, a screenshot:
    http://img232.imageshack.us/my.php?image=browserconfig1oz0.gif
    ^Go Here for Pic^
As you can see, the navigation links are all missing, as well as most other text that explains what things on the page do. I have used the page before by connecting to the router with other computers succesfully, just not my main computer. I only have this one on the network. The other one of mine isn't used often, and is very old anyway. I do however, use the wireless network for my PS3. Obviously, what i'm saying is that i need to be able to use the config on my main computer, and i don't have room (or $$$!) to set up another. Thanks!

Thanks for the quick reply! I have reset the router, I have turned it off for 20 seconds, then turned it back on, I have even taken it back to the store for a new one. I forgot to mention that, and that the only page that I can access that works in the Port Forwarding Page, which is the main page that i needed to use the router. I have set up port forwarding for my PS3 (which, i'm not sure worked, because i'm getting all kinds of errors...i'll work on that after i fix THIS!)
    Thanks!

  • Setup New WRT54GS. Having trouble. Getting error 322.

Trying to do the "EASY SETUP". I have Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)
1394 Net Adapter Intel(R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
I put setup disk in. Followed steps 1-3. got to step 4 where it says it is waiting for router after plugging it in. The power led, Wlan, 1 & internet LEDs are on and flickering. It then times out and gives me an error message of Error 322: New router or Gateway not detected. I PUT THE OLD ROUTER BACK ON. REBOOT AND IT IS OK WITH THAT ONE.

    FYI TO ALL.
While the device is 'ON', press the reset button on the back panel of the device using a pointed object and keep it held for about 60 seconds.
    - You will notice that the power light on the device would start blinking, indicating that it is being reset.
    - After 60 seconds release the reset button, then remove the power cable from the router, wait for 10 seconds and plug it back.
    - Let the power light on the device stabilize.
Step 1 : Confirmation of the physical connection. You should connect the modem >>>>>> router ( internet port )>>>>>> to main wired computer ( port 1,2,3,4).
Now switch OFF both your modem and the router.
Switch ON the modem first and wait for about 40 seconds and only then switch on router.
At the end of this step try going online from the wired computer . If you are not able to go online from the wired computer than do the step 2 :
Step 2 : Please access the setup page of the router by launching an Internet Explorer and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter.
When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as “admin "" all in lower cases and then click on ok.
On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be on ""Obtain IP Automatically / DHCP “.
Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".
    - Click on enable
    - Click on clone your PC's MAC button and then click on the Save Settings button.
Now switch OFF both your modem and the router.
Switch ON the modem first and wait for about 40 seconds and only then switch on router
I am sure after the end of this step you will be online from the wired computer.
THEY FORGOT TO ADD= REBOOT .  Did not work until I did.
Once you are online from the wired computer then do this 2 step's for wireless settings.
Now please consider the step for the wireless settings on the router page:
Step 3 : Wireless Settings on the router page .
    "Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here Wireless Network mode should be mixed
    - Provide any name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box, all in lower cases without any spaces in between.
    - Set wireless channel to 11
    - And wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on save settings.
Step 4 : Wireless Security on the router page .
    1. When the router's setup page appears, please click on the "Wireless" tab.
    2. When the Wireless area appears, click on the "Wireless Security" sub tab.
    3. When the Wireless Security area appears, select WEP under "Security Mode" dropdown.
    4. Encryption should be set to 64 bits 10 hex digits.
    5. Skip the "Passphrase" box.
    6. In the WEP Key1 box, type in a phone number (just the numbers no spaces or dashes) that you can remember in the box.
    7. Make a note of these 10 numbers; this would be your wireless network's key.
    8. Leave the key 2, key 3 and key 4 boxes blank, and then click on the Save Settings button.
Please remember to save copy and paste this chat in the word pad. I am confident , if you just follow the steps you will be all set. Once the router is set up , please try to get connected from the wireless computers to your network name using the WEP KEY 1 as your Password / Network Key / Pass phrase / Security Key

  • WRT54G & Comcast - Operating more than one wireless PC at the same time

First, I want to thank the many advisors and experts that contribute so freely to this knowledge base.  I have read the many insights into Comcast/cable modems.  Because to that I am able to connect one (1) laptop via wireless to my WRT54G which is attached to the cable modem from Comcast.  I had to use "MAC Cloning" to make this wireless connection work.  Happy days!
Problem:  When I try to bring a second laptop online via the WRT54G using wireless, the laptop seems to receive all the right information (ipcondig /all) but will not connect.  Internet Explorer presents the "standard error page" rather than my home page.  For example, I want to read my email via laptop #1 and have my wife read her email on laptop #2 - at the same using wireless.  Is this possible?
Question: Using the WRT54G and Comcast can I have two or more seperate wireless laptops connect to the Internet at the same time?  Note: I am NOT trying to connect the two (2) wireless laptops to each other.  Just a good old fashion connection to the Web via the Internet.
Are there other WRT54G owners with Comcast service that have this functionality?
(BTW - I am not trying to bash Comcast.  I am just unaware of a solution.)
    Thank you in advance.

Adjust the browser settings on the laptop where you don't have Internet...
Open an IE, click Tools >> Internet Options, then delete all files, cookies, history, forms...Goto "Connections", make sure Never Dial a Connection is checked, click on LAN Settings and make sure all the options are unchecked...Once you are done click on O.k...Close the IE and re-open it...
Yes, it is possible to read mails on both the laptops at the same time...Also it is possible to connect to Internet Wirelessly on multiple computers/laptops at the same time simultaneously...
