WRT54GX ver2 as access point advice please

Need some assistance here please.  I have 2 of the WRT54GX ver2 wireless routers.  One is at the front of the house where the DSL connection is and i have a Cat5e cable running to the back of the house and one floor up (about 30metres)  I would like to plug a patch lead from the wall point to a LAN port on router2 at the back of the house and use this as a second access point.  Reason is router 1 at the front works fine with Wireless but computers at the very back of the house get very weak signal and it is not reliable.  Can the router 2 be set as an access point only as i did not see this option on the configuration page.
I would like both routers doing wireless.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can definitely use the second router as an access point. As the second router is connected to the first router using an Ethernet cable, you need to change some setting on the second router.
Connect a computer to the LAN port of the second router. Do not connect any thing else now. Reset the router for 30 seconds. On the computer connected to the second router, open Internet explorer and in the address bar type http://192.168.1.1. Type “admin” in both username and password. Make all the wireless setting of the router.
Click on the tab that says Setup. Change the router IP address to 192.168.1.2 …..ASSUMING THE IP ADDRESS OF FIRST ROUTER TO BE 192.168.1.1. Also disable the DHCP server on the router. Save settings.
Unplug the power to the second router. Connect an Ethernet cable from the LAN port of the first router to the LAN port of the second router. Power back the second router

  • Having Issues with E1000 as an Access Point setup - Please Help

Quick background - Using an E2000 as my main router for a DSL connection (using an ISP provided Zyxel 660HW modem with wireless disabled if that matters). I have an E1000 that I want to setup as a LAN to LAN connection to the E2000 at the far end of the house and two floors down to extend my network.
I am pretty network saavy and thought this would be a snap. But I am running into trouble and hoping someone can assist.
Here are the steps I took:
    1. I ran a CAT 5 connection down to the basement where the E1000 is to be setup.
    2. I hard reset the E1000 to factory defaults
    3. I connected my notebook to the E1000 via a LAN port. At this stage the E1000 is NOT on the network
    4. I configured the E1000 with an IP of 192.168.1.2 - my main router (E2000) is set to 192.168.1.1 and the IP ranges start at .100 so this should present no conflicts
    5. I disabled DHCP
    6. I disabled NAT
    7. I saved settings and rebooted router
    8. I removed connection to notebook and plugged in the CAT 5 run from the E2000 - LAN port 1 on both (no WAN/Internet port used)
At this stage I expected the E1000 to act as an Access Point but it is not functioning properly. The first thing I notice is that the E1000 that should now be the AP is broadcasting the router name (something like Cisco 54653) even though this is not a broadcast SSID but only the router name. That is odd, I believe.
I have tried rebooting both the E2000 and E1000 along with the modem, no luck. I have tried different IPs for the E1000 just in case but again no luck, the wireless is not extended.
Any advice or guidance? Am I doing something wrong?
    Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like you have configured the E1000 properly, but you didn't describe how you have configured the Zyxel and E2000.
    Do you have A or B ?
    A.  Zyxel set to full bridge mode.  Then connect Zyxel to E2000's internet port and configure E2000 for PPPoE internet connection type (and DHCP server enabled and NAT enabled). Change MTU to manual on E2000 and enter 1492.  And then connect your E1000 as you described.  Internet connection type on E1000 is AutoconfigDHCP.
    B. Zyxel is configured as modem/router (DHCP server enabled and NAT enabled).  Then connect Zyxel to E2000's internet port.  E2000 is configured as router (DHCP server is enabled and NAT is enabled) and local IP address is 192.168.2.1.  Internet connection type on E2000 would be AutoconfigDHCP.  E1000 is configured as you described except local ip address is 192.168.2.2.  Internet connection type on E1000 is AutoconfigDHCP.

  • Configuring Cisco Aironet 1100 Access Point. Please help!

    Hi all,
I have dozens of Cisco Aironet 1100 access points, each is managing its own wi-fi with DHCP.
I had to disable dhcp on them because they are on a wired subnet where I am using the static IPs and don't want my wired clients to get DHCP addresses, nor someone to be able to plug the wire into own laptop and get on the network.
It's been working fine with one exception - I need to be able to ping my access points from the central site, and I can't.
What IOS command would enable ICMP echo on my access points in this case?
    Please help!

  • Wireless access point advice for SMB (5 users)

I have a small site, 12 employees, five of whom will need wireless access to the LAN.
This site has an 877 (not 877W) and so I need a wireless access point.
I've been looking at the Cisco Aironet 1130AG. Can anyone make a recommendation, something that will be the same or similar to configure as wireless services on the 800 series wireless routers.
There is no domain or radius server, so any user authentication will need to be handled by the AP.
Any useful information would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gareth

You're on the right track. The 1131AG is a great platform for small offices. It has built in antennas and is not offensive looking when mounted to the ceiling. Running a single 1131AG would allow you to run RADIUS locally on the AP so you could still use EAP security types such as EAP-FAST with WPA2.
Once you go to deploy, there are plenty of us here on the forum that can help if you run into config gotchas.
Of course I'll include the standard disclaimer that your coverage might vary based on the building construction, so you could need multiple APs to cover enough area. If certain coverage is absolutely mandatory, you should consider a site-survey beforehand.

PoE is nice to have but it's not mandatory.
I have a number of 1250 and 1140 connected to 2960 PoE ports.  No issues there.

  • SAP MSCS Windows 2008 "Client Access point"

    Hello Gurus,
As per the installation guide " GuideSAP ERP 6.0 - EHP4 Ready SR1 ABAP on Windows: Oracle" page 147 , step 10 of "Creating sap services " , we are trying to add Client access point , however we are not able to add the virtual host name for scs instance . Here we have one query , should we enter a new virtual hostname as it is not accepting the existing cluster hostname and in which IP class ( public or private ) we should register.
    We have node 1( hostname.domain) ,node 2( hostname.domain) and one cluster name ( clustername.domain) .
Which Virtual host name should i provide while adding the "Client
    Access Point" ?
    Please advice.

If u have created a virtual host already for the SAP group u can give that one and proceed else you need to enter a new virtual host for SAP group. This hostname and IP address are different than the three mentioned by you.
    Good Luck...

  • Surface Pro 3 with AIR-AP1042N-N-K9 Wireless Access Point

I am trying to connect two recently purchased Microsoft Surface Pro 3 windows 8.1 tablets to a cisco AIR-AP1042N-N-K9 (firmware 15.2(4)JA1) wireless access point. The tablet asks for the wlan password then displays 'can't connect to network'. I am able to connect to the AP using other Win 8.1 devices using WPA2-Personal + TKIP. The Surface Pro 3s connect to other wlans using other access points.
    Please would you help.

Thank you man that *REALLY* worked!

pcroak ha scritto:Stefano,The 521 series AP can operate in lightweight or standalone mode. If your AP currently has the lightweight image on it we can convert it using tftp. (I suspect it does, as the part number AIR-LAP indicates lightweight while AIR-AP is typically standalone)The best way to confirm is to check the cdp neighbor details for the AP software version (or login to the AP console and issue a "show version").If the software has "k9w7" in the name, that is standalone. If it has "k9w8" then it is lightweight. When operating in lightweight you will not be able to telnet/ssh or go to the AP web page.To convert your AP to standalone, please follow the procedure found here:http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html#wp160918-Patrick CroakWireless TAC

Follow the instruction for Cascading "LAN to LAN" in the link below:
Cascading or Connecting a Linksys router to another router
Thing to keep in mind when Cascading a router:
Change the secondary router's IP Address to something like 192.168.1.254 so its on the same network but doesn't conflict with the primary router
Make sure DHCP is disabled on the secondary router
Make sure nothing is ever plugged in the secondary router's internet port
Differentiate between wireless SSID's by location (Ex: Downstairs) and channel
Please remember to Kudo those that help you.

  • Looking advice about mounting 3500i access points (AP) to the ceiling

Hello, looking your help and advice about mounting 3500i access points (AP) to the ceiling ...
The ceiling is an Armstrong suspended ceiling with 24" mineral fiber drop ceiling...
What are recommendations and best practice - mount  AP under or above the ceiling?
Initially, I considered the mounting options from Oberon Inc. (p/n :1064-00), but given the difficulty by purchasing this product in my country have to consider other options...
I must say that the decision to mount the access point to the ceiling like this:
does not really to my liking...
Now I looking  a version of the mount АP with flush-mount kit for tiled ceilings (AIR-AP-BRACKET-3=)...
    What are your recommendations?

What are recommendations and best practice - mount  AP under or above the ceiling?
Do NOT install the WAP inside the ceiling cavity (hidden from view) as it will cause signals to degrade.
There are some stuff inside the ceiling cavity that could cause signals to misbehave.

  • Wireless sporatically stop. List your access point please.

After some testing I have come to the conclusion that this problem is access point dependent. Not by brand but by model. So in an effort to try and determine the common denomenator could you please list your access point (Model/Brand), what type of encryption, if your channel is set to auto, what version of Mac OS 10 you are running, and if works or not.
I will keep a compiled list at: http://bluefixed.com/random/waps.html

  • AP541 Access Point Best config for multiple VAPS Advice

    Hi
I have several AP541 (on different site locations) which I have currently configured for WPA enterprise using windows 2008 as the Radius server. This works fine for staff members who use the wireless when roaming around the offices.
I would also like to setup another VAP for guests to allow them to access our internet but nothing else on the network. I was wondering what approach would be the best one to adopt to achieve this. Would I be best to setup a WPA Personal VAP and allow guests to access the wireless this way. Or is there a better approach? If we did adopt this approach I presume this would mean that we have to log onto each AP in turn and then change the WPA key on each one everytime we decide to change the key? Or is there some clever software I could use to change them all in one go.
    Any help would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Colin

    Hello Simon,
I would keep them all in Access Point mode if you are planning on having them all hardwired into your network. That is the best setup.
As for Wireless WDS repeater or Wireless Client/Repeater, you would use these features if you are trying to extend your wireless signal at a certain location in your building but you are not able to run a ethernet cable to that location. So all you would do is power up the WAP4410n and it will help increase the wireless signal in that location if set in repeater mode. The draw back to this is it will cut your througput by half.
Wireless WDS bridge, you would use this feature if you are wanting to extend your network to a location were you are not able to run a ethernet cable to. Once you set up the bridge you would place it in the location were you are wanting to extend your hardwire network. If you plug a PC into the ethernet port on the Bridged WAP then you should be able to pull a IP address from the main network. When set in this mode it will not broadcast a wireless signal.. so you will not be able to connect wirelessly to the device once it is in Wireless Bridge mode.
Wireless Monitor.. not sure about this feature.. never used it.
This keep in mind that these devices will usually only bridge or use repeater with themselves and not other devices.
If you are wanting to start adding VLANs in the future you will need to stick to Access point mode since that mode will allow you to set up more than one VLAN the WAP can look out for. If you use repeater or bridge mode feature you will only be able to use 1 vlan.
I hope that helps you out!
    Thanks,
    Clayton Sill

  • Need some advice for AP IOS upgrade (Wireless Access Point 3702 Series) ?

    Hi to all
I recently purchase a Wireless Access Point (AIRCAP 3702E-E) with 4 antenna, i will use this device like wifi hotspot in my home.
I would like to upgrade it but i see two kind of AP IOS :
    Lightweight AP IOS Software
    Autonomous AP IOS
    What are the difference ?
In case of Lightweight AP IOS Software will be the one to choose, i have multiple IOS :
    Wireless Lan, ap3g2-k9w8-tar.152-4.JB4.tar
    Wireless Lan Recovery, ap3g2-rcvk9w8-tar.152-4.JB4.tar
Someone can tell me what is the difference between these two versions ?
    Best Regards.
    Elrick.

    Hi Elrick,
Cisco AP AIRCAP3702E is Cisco enterprise unit.  Cisco small business support WAP4410N, WAP121, WAP321, WAP551, and WAP561 AP. However I will answer your questions.
Lightweight AP ISO you can use it ONLY if you connect AP to wireless controller
Autonomous AP ISO for manage and modify AP  by it self not required wireless controller.
    Thanks,
    Moh
