WRT54GX2 continues to reset any time a wireless devices tries to log on.

I have had a WRT54GX2 router for over a year now, almost never a problem. All of a sudden on monday or so the router would constantly shut off and back on again. I noticed that anytime a a wireless device tries to connect to the router, the router resets itself, its as if you unplug it and plug it back in, all the lights flash off and it connects again and it goes off again. When it reconnects it lasts a few seconds, once I was able to log onto my PS3 account wirelessly during that reconnect for a few seconds, it seemed to work great until it lost the access point cause the router reset again.
I have unplugged the router multiple times. I have connected my computer directly to the line and my internet works fine, in fact the router works fine as long as no wireless device tries to connect with it. I have updated the fireware on the router. Nothing seems to work, I have no clue what to do.

  • Can any generic USB wireless device work on my Mac Mini?

I am needing to connect my computer to the internet and i was wondering if just any generic USB wireless device will be able to connect too my wireless router???
if not what would be my best bet?

It would not be accurate to say that any generic USB wifi adapter will work with MacOS because not all have suitable drivers. Some do, but I suspect the majority do not. Many of the adapters that exist will work with Windows however, if you have an Intel mini and run Parallels, Fusion or BootCamp, because the vast majority of drivers are written for Windows rather than MacOS.
However, there are some USB adapters that do work (http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/30/asus-usb-n11-wireless-n-usb-adapter-ships-wit h-ezlink/ for example). If you are considering such a device, ensure it has MacOS drivers either supplied or available for download, and specifically that the drivers are suited to the MacOS version you have.
Be aware that USB is probably the least reliable way to connect a system, so it shouldn't be regarded as a best possible network solution!

  • Kernel panic in 10.6.8 on MacBook Pro 3,1 any time a USB device is plugged in

I updated my MacBook Pro 3,1 (late 2007) from 10.6.7 to 10.6.8, and when the update was completed, any time any USB device was plugged in to either USB port, there was an instant kernel panic.
I checked carefully to confirm that this also happened after booting into Safe Mode to disable any extensions or login items.
So I had no choice but to revert to 10.6.7 and apply a few updates and patches short of 10.6.8.
I'm writing this to report this bug to Apple. I hope they address this issue. If anybody can tell me how to access the correct system log recording the kernel panics and submit it to Apple, I'd be willing to do that.

CMCSK: Thanks for the link, but you provided no further instructions, such as exactly WHERE to report the problem. So for now I'm just going to post the information right here.

  • I've tried all the suggestions to the disconnected Ipad and none of them seem to work. I've reset several times, placed my device next to the router and left it there to no avail. Help!

Why doesn't any of the suggestions work for me regarding the continuous disconnected Ipad with WI-FI? Any other ideas Thanks.

There is no way that your 6 month old iPad should be working like this. I'm glad to hear that you will be taking the device to an Apple Store, to let them have a look. Good luck!

  • Time Capsule wont assign IP to wireless devices

    Hello
My TC (1st Generation) stopped giving IP adresses to the wireless devices trying to connect to the internet.
    This is my setup:
-cable modem hooked to a ethernet power plug (to externet my wired network through my power outlets)
-ethernet power pulg (in other room) to the time capsule via ethernet
I have the time capsule then conecting to my apple tv and my ps3 and my desktop via ethernet and they do not have any problem connecting to the internet (the TC does assign them IPs)
But the TC wireless, does have signal (broadcast) and good enough, but not my laptop or tablet will connect to the internet, The SSID of the TC is seen but at the time the wireless device tries to connect, it fails. (I imply that the TC is not giving IP adress to the wireless devices)
I have reset my router, my ethernet adapters, the TC and all wireless devices with no luck or different results.
I have factory reset and upgraded the firmware of the TC to the newest one and no different results.
    Can you help me?

    Try setting wireless again.
Use Wireless Name ie SSID that is short, no spaces pure alphanumeric.. ie fully SMB compatible.
Lock the wireless channel.. use 1, 6, 11 in turn.. strangely was just doing the job today for a friend.. the connection was woeful to MBP on channel 1 but excellent on 13.. although the actual signal was good on one and no obvious interference things like cordless phones, av senders, wireless door belss.etc all can use 2.4ghz.. so try those different channels.

  • TC Looses connection to the Internet for wireless device & new Apple TV

I have a new TC (1 TB) that I got within the last month or two, I use it as my Internet router behind my DSL modem. TC gets a DHCP address from my DSL modem then does NAT to both Ethernet and Wifi devices behind it. After a short period of time I have noticed that my Wifi devices (New Apple TV, Macbook Pro, & 2 Iphones) will loose connectivity to the Internet, although they never loose their Wifi connection. What is strange is that I have several hard wired Ethernet devices that can still access the Internet going through the TC at the same time the wireless devices can not.
In order to get the wifi devices back working I have done a few things, disconnected and reconnected the Ethernet cable between the TC and my DSL modem, power cycled the TC, power cycled my DSL modem. It seems like the most reliable method is power cycling the TC.
This seems to happen pretty frequently however with no pattern or cause I can detect. The only interesting thing is that I just installed my New Apple TV and prior to that I do not recall having to recycle the TC. I am inclined to think the TCP video streaming might be overloading the TC and causing the wireless process to crap out while the ethernet ports are fine.
Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Will do some more troubleshooting and will contact Apple support at some point. I will also update this thread when I find out more.

I have a similiar problem - but I don't have Apple TV - and when the TC looses internet connection it is for wired and wireless devices. WLAN and LAN still working.
At the same time i cannot access the configuration of the TC thru Airport - are you able to do this?
I also have the feeling that high data loads provokes the error more often.

  • Airport is connected but my wireless devices can not?

Internet and cable had been down for 8 hours. The cable company had to send signals and 'pings' to reset modem, now our wireless devices can not connect?
Airport has green light and reports no problems. iPad keeps searching for service, pc can't connect?

    Welcome!
Can you clarify what model iMacs you have? This forum is for the older G4 iMAcs with the articulated monitor and a hemispherical base. However, due to poor forum labeling, many people with newer iMacs are lured to this area. Reset procedures may vary with model so it's important we know which variant you have. Use "About the Mac" in the Apple menu to find your processor type--that should be enough for now.
Once you you figure out the processor type, append it to the equipment info in you profile, Example: it now says "iMac." If you find yours has a G5 processor, change it to read "iMac G5." That will save you a lot of keystrokes down the road.

  • Time Capsule needs to be reset every time I print wirelessly or watch Apple TV

    Hello all!
My Time Capsule keeps dropping my wireless printer and Apple TV. Every time I want to stream a movie to my Apple TV it needs to be reset, and everytime I want to print wirelessly it needs to be reset. However, my internet connection remains constant and never has any interuptions.
Please help, it's getting really annoying to run upstairs to reset the time capsule every time I wanna watch a movie.
    Thanks

It is reported here all the time that the TC needs daily reboots.. you are highly fortunate that it is only weekly..
The fact is the old TC using 7.5 firmware was probably hugely more reliable than the current one which is not able to be flashed back beyond 7.6. There is a bug.. and as yet no Apple confession of issues.
But most people can get away without a reboot.. you just need to disconnect all users.. which was an option in the v5 utility.. now left out of v6.
Strongly recommend you install v5 utility.
(Or get electrical timer to restart the TC on a nightly basis).
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.
For screen shots see this post.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4668746?tstart=0
Most common message in history of the TC.. something has failed to unmount.. Lion and esp. Mountain Lion are affected.
Simple way.. reboot the TC to lose the connections..
    Might take a network reboot.
But from 5.6 utility you can disconnnect all users.

  • Trying to set up time capsule but keep getting message stating airport utility was unable to find any airport wireless device. What do I do know?

Trying to set up my time capsule on my imac.
Keep getting message "Airport utility was unable to find any airport wireless devices."
    What do I do now?
    joglenn

When having difficulties accessing the Time Capsule (TC) via the AirPort Utility, try the following, in order checking accessibility with the utility after each step:
Check the local connection. If you are trying to access the TC wirelessly, make sure that you are connected to its wireless network before running the AirPort Utility to administer it. If you are still unable to access it with the utility, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to one of the TC's LAN ports.
Power cycle the base station. Remove the power adapter's plug from the power outlet, and then, wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.
Perform a "factory default" reset on the base station.
Finally, if you are attempting to access the TC via an Ethernet connection, be sure that your Ethernet port is NOT configured for Jumbo Frames, i.e., using an MTU of 9000+.

  • I have had a time capsule for years and it worked well.  Now my airport utility states it is unable to find any airport wireless devices.  When I rescan, I get the same response.  I access the internet wirelessly through my Time Capsule - that part works.

My time capsule is currently not backing up my MAC.  My airport utility states it can't find any airport wireless devices.  But I can access the internet via my time capsule.  I was trying to reset my time capsule but it won't let me since the airport utiity states it can't find any airport wireless devices.

i was having the same problem. i held the reset button on my airport express for ten seconds, waited for it to restart and than unplugged my internet modem for 15 seconds and waited for it to restart and my wireless worked. but when i go to setup everything through the airport utility everything goes to crap and i have to start over again. i don't get it.

  • Airport Utility unable to find any Airport wireless devices (specifically Time Capsule)

I have a (2007) MacBook Pro running OSX 10.5.8, Airport Utility 5.5.3, and (2011) Time Capsule 7.6. The time capsule is not set up as a wireless station, it only connects to my exisiting wireless network to be used as a backup device with time machine. When I try to scan for wireless devices, the airport utility finds none even though the TC is on and the light is green. My other MacBook Pro running OSX 10.6.8 is able to find the TC and run backups just fine - both are on the same wireless network with the same default wireless settings in network preferences. I've looked at about every similar thread in these support forums and tried numerous suggestions, none of which have resolved my issue. I have called Apple tech support, and the only suggestion they gave me was to set up a new network location with default settings - this worked when they gave me the suggestion, and I used it every time airport would lose connection to the TC; however, it no longer works for some reason. Here are some additional details:
This laptop has connected to the TC and made backups in the past. Every time I've established a connection, it has remained for a period of time (usually about a day), then would randomly drop and not be able to find the TC again. I was previously able to work around this by rebooting everything and setting up a new default network profile on my laptop, per Apple tech support suggestion.
Suddenly, the previously successful "reboot everything/create new network location" quick fix doesn't work anymore. I've checked all of my router settings, and nothing seems odd - all pretty standard settings. I don't advertise my SSID for security reasons, but the TC is set up to manually connect to the correct SSID, and it's clearly working fine on the other laptop.
My network preferences are also all standard. TCP/IP is using DHCP with an automatically assigned address. IPv6 is off. DNS servers are the same on all devices. I've tried renewing the DHCP lease many times, but that has no impact.
In airport utility, when I select File>Configure Other and enter the address/password for the TC, it connects to it just fine - I can see and configure all of the settings on the time capsule. Still, it will not find it when scanning for devices and will not make backups with time machine.
Incidentally, the same thing happens with my wireless printer and this laptop - will randomly lose connection and be unable to print even though the other laptop can print just fine. This leads me to believe it is a problem with the laptop and not the TC or router.
    Desperate to find a solution.
    Thanks

Connect to TC by ethernet from any computer. Reset to defaults. ie hold in reset and wait until led flashes rapidly.. about 10sec.
Then redo the setup. Use manual wireless settings.. set a different name to 5ghz.. so bands cannot swap at the client end. Set channels manually not auto.. pick the clearest ones for your area.. you can just trial and error it using channels 1, 6 and 11 or download a utility for the Mac to scan wireless usage.. !

  • I'm suddenly getting the kernel panic message and constant restarts when connected to the time machine wireless network. if is switch to the BT network, all fine. no help found so far as to what's wrong or how to correct, anyone have any thoughts...

Recently upgraded to mountain lion in order to buy the new tall tower for time machine backups. had to get technical support to help with set up as it wouldn't play ball with two computers. all working fine up until last week when the iMac started getting backup error messages. then system restarts independently when using time machine on the time machine wireless network. only stops restarting when I switch the wireless network back to he bt one, which is a pain obviously as can't back up to time machine then.  it has to be a problem with airport utility or something wireless but all says all up to date with software etc. all still works fine backing up from laptop on the wireless network, just the iMac is not happy. any help or thoughts very much appreciated.

Hi, many thanks Bob, what you say is not unthinkable at all, although it does answer the question
"what could I do *instead* of ..." rather than the one I actually asked, but seriously ...
Shutting down might be an answer, although it would clear out my tmp directory - which I might not want to have to sort through looking for things I want to save every time I go to work, and also, now that nvram doesn't seem to work for disabling the boot chime, it can get a bit embarassing booting up in a busy meeting if I have forgotten to mute before I shut down. There are all sorts of other issues, such as editing documents, loading web pages and so on that I would have to set up again.
Your suggestion of letting Apple know is a good one - thank you for the link.
    Take care,
    Mark

    Hello Oddsbodkin,
It looks like the creator of Netflix Desktop has a site for the project here:

I would try posting your question there and see if anyone else has encountered this error and has a solution.
