WRT54GX2 slow wireless 5.5 mbps speed help please

So I just received my WRT54GX2 and got it hooked up. Here are some details of my equipment which are all experiencing the same issue while connected via wireless.
1 Dell Inspiron wireless G. (updated latest driver)
1 Toshiba laptop wireless G (not sure on driver yet)
1 custom tower with wireless G (updated latest driver)
WRT54GX2 ver 2 with firm ware 1.00.08 (just updated)
Comcast 6 Meg cable internet service with Motorolla cable modem
Here is the problem I am experiencing.
After configuring the WPA2/TKIP settings and getting everybody logged on, the wireless connectivity speed (reported via the windows XP wireless utility) indicates connection speeds of 5.5 Mbs. If I disable the adapter and re-enable it, it connects and is at 54 Mbps for about 1 second, then rapidly drops down to the 5.5 which is where it stays. This problem is replicated on all 3 PC's on the wireless. I have tried adjusting the beacon interval down to 50, even went down to 10 with no result. I changed the RTS threshhold to 2304. Tried setting the transmission rate from auto to 54 Mbps. I tried adjusting the RWIN settings on my PC as suggested in another post here where somebody was experiencing a similar problem. I have installed the Microsoft WPA2 patch (893357) and that made no difference either. I have switched to G only instead of mixed mode. Tried channels 1, 11, 7, 6, and probably most of the others. Moved the router around to different locations in the room. Even sitting within arms reach of it, I still only see the 5.5 Mbps (I have full signal strength BTW). I ran netstumbler and found very few wireless networks within range. And the ones that were had very weak signals. Short of unplugging my cordless phone, I am at a loss of things to try. I may reset the router and try a new config from scratch, but if there is any help on this subject it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you have not done this since your last firmware upgrade, please do this now.   If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for all your wireless cards.  Note that often the speed of your wireless network is determined by the "weakest link" in your system.  You might want to try to isolate the problem by turning on each wireless computer separately, then two at a time.  You might be able to tell which computer is bringing down your wireless speed.
If you still have trouble, try the following.
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
Hope this helps.

  • MBP extremely slow after upgrading to Lion. Help please.

    Hello,
I'm using a MacBook Pro and just loved it while it was still on Snow Leopard. I upgraded to Lion a month ago and thought the reason for my MBP delay in EVERYTHING was because it was still indexing all the files or getting used to the new OS. However, after a month, when I turn my computer on it takes 5-9 minutes with the loading page of Apple.
It takes another 5-8 minutes for it to normally function after logging in but it isn't consistent though. I really need help over here guys.
My line of work requires a fast notebook and quite honestly, I'm very disappointed with the new os.
    Thank you in advance,
    Yano

If it is a new installation, spotlight can take forever to do the first indexing. I put my Sleep option in Power preferences to "never" (On mains power that is) and leave the computer lid open / on all night.
There are also other things going on, like, software updates,(both from Apple and third party), maintenance scripts (that run on schedule at night), Backup, iDisk and iCloud syncs (the first uploads can be large), etc.
Once the initial cludge is cleared things get much better. But get that RAM upgrade. Crucial delivered mine within 24 hours of ordering
You'll need a very small screwdriver!

  • Very slow wireless internet on MBP 15"

My laptop has been working perfectly on wifi until around the last 2 weeks or so. Maybe it has something to do with an update.. When I connect my laptop to the internet with an ethernet cable it is blazing fast as it should be.. I'm very disappointed that I'm already having problems with the computer and I've had it around 3 months. I hope Apple can address this problem ASAP, because it is VERY frustrating...

Yes, perhaps you would want to do the update mentioned above before doing anything drastic. But, note that at least one is saying that some update from "last night" is causing him/her airport problems. I'll get the post reference and be right back. Here tis: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2114759&tstart=0. I am not positive if the one referenced above and the "last night" update are the same. But, note that the one above apparently deals only with problems occurring while on battery power.

  • Slow since upgrading!!! help please

    Hi,
A quick question if I may.....
I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mavericks and the system was running very slow!
I upgraded the RAM from 2GB to 8GB (it really needed it!)
However, it takes an age to boot up, start up Mail and Safari and if I watch a video online, it keeps stopping and buffering!
What on earth is going on??? can anyone help??
Before I upgraded to Mavericks it was much faster doing everything so the upgrade of the OS and RAM has actually made things worse!
I have run Disk Utility, verified the drives and found nothing to repair.
    Please help

  • Slow wireless speed with new iMac Intel- problem with 802.11g?

There IS a problem with the new Intel Mac, I have tried both the Intel iMac and the new Intel Mac mini and they both have the same problem with slow wireless speed (or rather it variates, if I do a ping to another computer on the network the speed goes from < 1 ms up to 1000 ms and then down to < 1 ms and so on). The older mac minis, my Linux boxes and my Windows PCs don´t have that problem. I have also read reports on the net and it appears that most users experiencing this problem have wireless card firmware version 101.3 (3.120.28.3) . A possible "fix" is to change to 802.11b on the router and then it works. No speed fluctuations and a stabile network! I know it is a bad solution, I would prefer to use 802.11g and get the speed. However I think this points to a problem with the drivers regarding 802.11g. I am starting up a new thread on this and those of you with problems, please try to switch to 802.11b and if it works let us make Apple aware of this.

  • T410 slow wireless speeds

We recently acquired two refurbished T410's - both of these laptops have extremely slow wireless speeds (slow or no page loads) and it seems that they periodically disconnect from the wireless connection for short periods of time.

On my PC, I went to speedtest.net and determined that I am receiving like 20MB downloads via the wired connection.  However, my iPad only gets approximately less than 2 MB download speeds.  I have tried reseting the router and I do have what I believe to be the latest firmware update (Firmware Version: 1.01.36 build 4).     I also receive the slow download speeds when I try connecting the other wireless devices.  I assume my problem has to do with some sort of configuration setting found in the router configuration page (http://192.168.1.1/).  Can anyone please advise me what to do?  The router is only a few feet away from my iPad so the signal strength is strong.  I just don't understand why I'm receiving such slow wireless download speeds.

This suggestion did not work.  I tried to isolate the problem by optimizing the router's wireless settings. I used the 2.4GHz, set the radio band to standard 20Mhz then set the standard channel to 9. The laptop had the same slow wireless speeds as the iPad did.
This may be due to the IPv6 feature on your computer. One of the solutions may be disabling IPv6. If the issue still exist after performing this step and download speed is fine when connected straight to the modem then reset reconfigure could work, just use WPA2 for the security with AES and a fixed channel for wireless.

  • Blast speed is currently 2 Mbps/9 Mbps on the Comcast Speed Test. Help please!

I've had the Blast service for quite some time, and have noticed painfully slow internet browsing for the last couple of months. I mean...pull-my-hair-out-slow.  I just did a Comcast speed test and the results were 2.31 Mpbs and 9.01 Mpbs. Um....that would explain things. But not really... as I'd love to see the speeds I'm supposed to have. Even double digits would be nice! I'm trying to run ShaperProbe but I get the error "Servers are busy. Try again later." I've tried a few times. I'll post the results if I can get the scan to work. Power level is 45-46 dBmV and SNR 35-37 Modem: ARRIS Motorola SurfBoard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0Logs of June 2015 (the most recent, and the logs before that are January): Jun 22 2015 07:07:243-CriticalT05.0SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Loss of Sync;CM-MAC=b8:16:19:fa:b8:0c;CMTS-MAC=00:1d:70:af:fd:a0;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jun 18 2015 08:04:503-CriticalR02.0No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out;CM-MAC=b8:16:19:fa:b8:0c;CMTS-MAC=00:1d:70:af:fd:a0;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jun 18 2015 07:08:273-CriticalT05.0SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Loss of Sync;CM-MAC=b8:16:19:fa:b8:0c;CMTS-MAC=00:1d:70:af:fd:a0;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jun 17 2015 23:08:553-CriticalR02.0No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out;CM-MAC=b8:16:19:fa:b8:0c;CMTS-MAC=00:1d:70:af:fd:a0;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0;Jun 16 2015 02:43:065-WarningZ00.0MIMO Event MIMO: Stored MIMO=-1 post cfg file MIMO=-1;CM-MAC=b8:16:19:fa:b8:0c;CMTS-MAC=00:1d:70:af:fd:a0;CM-QOS=1.1;CM-VER=3.0; I would sure appreciate any ideas. I have not contacted tech support yet, although that may be faster??  We'll see.  Thanks in advance for any help!

ShaperProbe has not been usable for some time, unfortunately. Check to see if Comcast is reporting an outage for your area by logging in to https://customer.xfinity.com/Secure/MyServices/ or by checking the voice response system at 1-800-Comcast.
If no outage is reported, see Connection Troubleshooting Tips. If you want to troubleshoot this yourself and still need help, please provide Information Requested for Connection-Related Posts.
If you are using Wifi it's best to switch to an Ethernet connection if possible while measuring speed and checking the reliability of your connection to Comcast.
If you'd rather have them do the troubleshooting call them at the phone number on your bill or 1-800-Comcast and have them send a tech out to identify the cause and correct it.
If the tech finds bad coax, splitters, amplifiers, or connections in your home (even if Comcast originally supplied them) you'll probably have to pay for the visit unless you have their Service Protection Plan (http://www.xfinity.com/spp/, about $5/mo). If the trouble is due to a faulty Comcast modem, eMTA, gateway device, or anything outside your home, you shouldn't be charged.

  • E3200 Wired too Slow / Wireless Fast???

    Hi.
I have a E3200 Router and when the computers are connected directly to router (Wired) the speed is SLOW and  when computers are connected via wireless the speed is fast (normal). What can i do to have the wired computer with same fast speed as wireless?....i'm i missing something?
    Here are the speed results:
All wired computers connections (total of 4) downwload speed ranging from 8 Mbps to 13 Mbps.
All wireless computer connections download speed stable at 49 Mbps.
    Can someone please help?
    Thank you

Seems to be an issue with numerous E3200. This problem has been reported many times now. Call Linksys support and get it replaced and hope the replacement works better...

  • Slow Wireless Connection (WRT54G2)

Hi, my WRT54G2 router has been working great since I got it a year ago. But recently I'm experiencing really slow wireless speed. My normal speed is around 15 Mbps but now it has dropped to about 0.85 - 1.0 Mbps. At first I thought someone might be using my connection without my knowledge so I changed the password but it was still slow. I then changed my wireless channel (I heard that if too many people are on the same channel it can cause interference) and it worked. However, a little bit later (sometimes a few hours and sometimes a few days) my connection would become slow again. I have also tried upgrading my firmware but that didn't help much either. Does anyone know what can cause a problem like this? Any insights are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do the following steps: # Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page.# Lower the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) from 1500 to 1400 or less (usually found on your routers main/ basic setup page)# Then go to the Wireless tab, keep network mode as mixed, make the Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, 11.. #Adjust the following advanced wireless settings:~~ Lower the beacon interval from 100 to 75~~ Lower the fragmentation threshold from 2346 to 2306~~ Lower the RTS threshold from 2347 to 2304 Then check the wireless status..

  • Slow wireless on Time Capsule

I realize this question in some form or another has been posted ad nauseum, so I'll apologize in advance.
I'm running a 500 GB Time Capsule. I recently got the bright idea to extend the network and bought a couple of new AirPort Express (11n models). I pulled an old Netgear router out of the mix and switched the network so the TC would serve as the router and the Expresses would extend the network. I reset the TC and started from scratch. I even tried forcing the 5Ghz setting to see if that would speed things up.
Before I even get to configure the Expresses, I'm running into a VERY slow wireless problem with the TC. My MacPro plugged into the TC with ethernet is moving around 8Mbps online. My iPad and MBP are lucky to get 700Kbps. The iPad and MBP are in the same room as the TC, less than 10 feet away from the unit, so walls, etc. are not an issue. Strangely, according to Speedtest.net, I get about 1.2Mbps UPLOAD speed on the iPad while only getting around 700Kbps download. That strikes me as very unusual.
I've checked the SNR per earlier posts and they seem in the very good to excellent range.
Is this a bad unit or is there something more I should be looking at?
    Thanks in advance

  • One Solution for Fixing Slow Wireless Connection

Quick and easy solution for slow wireless connection.
My hardwired PC connection was working fine over FIOS, but my wireless connection through my Macbook Pro was soooo slowwww, although the machine itself was fine. Pages would take forever to appear, then finally sort of pop up. Didn't really seem to be a Mac problem, just a connection problem.
After searching forever to find a fix, I found a quick & easy solution that works at least for now: change your DNS address.
I'm not a techie so I don't know ALL of the implications of doing this, but in desperation, it has worked for me and I think at no risk to your network or machine. Changing my DNS address has made my connection blazing fast and relieved many weeks of frustration.
HOW: I can only share how to change on a Mac. (Please chime in if you can give directions for PC. ) Just go to this Apple support page, which will outline exactly how to do it. I used 4.2.2.2, I think you can also use 4.2.2.1 as the DNS address. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2002
    Other resources I've found follow:
    (specific to FIOS):  http://www.stationstops.com/2008/04/16/high-speed-internet-3-tips-to-optimize-your-verizon-fios-broa...
    (Specific for Mac): http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=358919
Maybe this is a commonly-known fix but it wasn't for me, so hopefully it will help some of the other less-than-technical people out there. Good luck!

Actually this is a common problem with Mac OSX (http://rubyisbeautiful.com/2008/2/8/osx-dns-fix-update) and how it does DNS lookups and pertains to routers that provide the internal gateway (i.e. 192.168.1.1) as the DNS address which is what the ActionTec does by default.
You can change that at the router level to either push out Verizon's dns that the router then uses or any other open dns server.  I had to do this a long time ago for some of the OS X boxes on my network.

  • Macbook Air Extremely Slow Wireless

    Hello All,
Got my brand new MB-Air and from the get-go noticed extremely slow wireless performance. I did a bit of digging and here is what I found.
The MB-Air works OK with cheap (consumer) wireless APs, however when used in conjunction with the commercial APs most of which use the Atheros chipset the performance is horrible. I found that when connecting to APs that use Atheros' commercial chipset, the MB-Air connects with 802.11 G specs instead of N even when the signal metrics are excellent such as -39 RSSI.
Moreover, even With the 802.11 G connection at 54Mbps the performance is both sluggish and latent. Small file transfers have a 50/50 shot at working and large file transfers seem to die reliably. Albeit this could be an issue with Apple's implementation of SMB / Samba which is rather poor.
I have tried to turn off Bluetooth to see if my experience is different. We'll see.
I would be interested in feedback from people who are also experiencing the same poor wireless performance to learn the chipset of the AP they are having issues with.
By-the-way -- I will take a fix, if someone has come up with one. However my guess is that this is an engineering issue that Apple has to fix.
    BP

Sitting side-by-side, my MBA was averaging less than 1 Mb/s on downloads, and my MBP more than 9 Mb/s. The MBP was fully ten times faster. As you can imagine, viewing videos was a ragged, unpleasant experience on the MBA.
I'm using an early wireless-N Belkin router, so it didn't show up on airport utility, thus i couldn't change channels there as proposed on this thread. But to isolate the problem, at my brother's suggestion i took both computers to a Starbucks, and observed the two computers downloading there at equal speeds. So clearly the problem wasn't with my MBA, but my router.
I went to Belkin's website to figure out how to change channels on the router, and checked for firmware updates. There was one, so i figured I'd do that before attacking the "changing channels" task. I upgraded the firmware, and with that simple fix my MBA is happily zipping along now with >9 Mb/s downloads, same as the MBP. More than TEN times faster than before. My iPhone download speeds increased more than tenfold, too.
My advice, if you're having wireless problems with your MBA: First make sure your router's running the latest firmware.
