WRT54GX2(v2)_GamingCenter_NAT-Issues

Router::WRT54GX2(v2)(Firmware(v1.00.06)::Loader(v1.00.05)
Hi, I work as (Tech-support of a sort, Networking, isn't really my thing) at a gaming center and we have many PCs and Xbox360s that play
Call of Duty 4, Halo 3(Xbox360s), etc. and they don't like to play from behind the Firewall and we can't disable it obviously.
Our NAT is set to strict... I guess.
Any help would be nice in setting things so they can work properly for
our games as we get serious lag with some games.
Thanks
PS: I haven't updated the firmware, I am sceptically of updating
BIOS and Firmwares, because they can sometimes go wrong.
Also I checked the release notes for the only upgrade available, and
there doesn't seem to be anything related to what I am doing

ok then just figure out yourself if your ISP gives you a private or a public IP address. your issue can be resolved by port forwarding, IF there is only one computer involved. it usually works by setting a static IP on the computer that uses the software/the game you wanna play, then a port forwarding rule will be set up on the router. so you actually have to know what ports you need to allow/open on the router. the problem is you have several computers on the network, and forwarding a certain port to several computers is not possible. maybe this link can help you out in understanding what im trying to say. link

  • WRT54GX2 SRX200 thermal issue with internal Ethernet switch engine? Issue with DynDNS?

The WRT54GX2 SRX200 had been working for 2 years. Last week it started to drop LAN/WLAN i.e. all Ethernet connection are up for about 20 seconds, then drop, comes back within 10 seconds then drop again after 20 seconds, etc. Shutting off the WRT54GX2 for a while will give 5 minutes of service, but the cycle will start again. Power supply is operating OK. I suspect a thermal problem on the Ethernet switch engine: it has been hot in San Jose and the wiring shelf reached 85*F. The other issue is that DynDNS flagged the WRT54GX2 SRX200 because it updates IP too often e.g. update on a timer ?
I replaced the SRX200 with an older WRT54G V5 that works well in the same spot, and is 'verified' by DynDNS.

Whats the current firmware installed on your Router?
Try to download the latest firmware of your router from the linksys website and upload it on your router, once the firmware is uploaded then you need to reset your router and re-configure all the settings on it from scratch.

  • WRT54GX2 DHCP Server issue

I am using this as an access point rather than router. I have a separate DHCP Server (Windows 2003 Ent. Server). I went in and disabled the DHCP server after upgrading to software 1.01.14, but it still is sending response to DHCP requests. Has anyone ever dealt with a similar problem? I am about to rollback to a previous version of firmware, but needed to upgrade to resolve another issue I was having. TIA

You said that you have a win2003 DHCP server, even if you disable the DHCP capability on the router, your win2003 is the one providing the DHCP address on you computer.

  • WRT54GX2 Rebooting - Windows XP SP3 issue??? New Firmware Needed?

    Have a WRT54GX2, version 1.0, with firmware 1.01.22. Maybe a month ago noticed that I had to power cycle the unit once a week to get my Pap2t voip to work better. Got back this weekend from a trip, noticed that it was rebooting, sometimes as often as every few minutes. Yanked it out, tossed in an old Airlink until I could troubleshoot. Started digging around, and could not find any good reasons for the rebooting. THEN, I noticed via online searches that the Windows XPSP3 release that recently came out has caused some documented and confirmed problems with other wired/wireless routers. Here's a quote;
Broadband modem/router maker Billion says XP SP3 has been causing its BiPAC 5200-series routers to go into a constant crash and reboot cycle.
The company has produced firmware upgrades that solve the problem, which relate to a bug in Billion's code, not Microsoft's. It relates to the fact that Microsoft has started issuing "flag 43" as part of DHCP messages to the modem -- something that has been built into the DHCP specification for 11 years, but not actually used in Windows until XP SP 3.
Although Windows XP SP3 has been available for manual download from Microsoft since May 6, it has just hit Windows Update as an automatic upgrade, which will cause unexpected problems for owners of “unpatched” Billion BiPAC 5200 routers, and possibly other brands or models of router.
Is there someone here from Linksys that can address this??????? As of the time of this posting, the latest firmware is still 1.01.22 that I could find.
    Thanks.

No responses here, so I did the online support, went through the chats, one "tech" said that the computer operating system didn't matter or have any effect on the router! I finally got it escalated, had someone call me. At least this person was able to acknowledge that there was a problem. She could not provide any additional information, but said to "keep checking back" to the support pages, for a new firmware to be released. I asked several times if for sure there would be a fix for my older router, and each time she just repeated to "check the support pages".
I seriously doubt that any units more than a year old will be supported by the factory, given the other posts here, as well as the lack of responses by anyone from Linksys to any difficult or non-standard technical questions.
(Mod note: Edited for guideline compliance. Thank you.)

  • WRT54GX2 Performance Issue

Anyone see the WRT54GX2 V1 routers slow down after a while of operation. Pings don't go through, peformance lags. If I power cycle it, it comes up and runs fast again. I am running V1.01.22 (latest) firmware. If I run completely hardwired I do not see the issue, so I suspect it has something to do with the wireless WPA-PSK encryption. I have a few out there in the field and I have heard complaints from those customers - and they are running WPA encryption too. Any thoughts?

i even unplugged the ethernet cable and still spikes? everything is updated. how can i check to see if something is being downloaded off my harddrive?
Well if the internet cable connection is unplugged (and you also don't have a wireless connection) then how could anything be downloaded?
Some additional experiments you could try and see how things behave are:
    1. Boot in safe mode.
    2. Try using another account (create it if necessary).

  • Steps to be taken if Win XP Pro has to be reinstalled on the desktop attached to WRT54GX2 router...

I have to reinstall Win XP Pro on my primary desktop PC attached to the WRT54GX2 router due to virus/trojan issues. The router is running V22 of the firmware I believe. I will have to reformat the hard drive on the primary PC attached to the router. I have two other desktops that have WMP54GX wireless adapters that are running fine. I've created a config backup file for the WRT54GX2's current config if needed. Can someone give a link or clear step-by-step instructions on what steps I'll need to take after Win XP Pro is reinstalled on the primary PC to reestablish my network. Will I need to config backup file at all or will the router/wireless adapters be largely unaffected by the OS reinstall? Thanks in advance, Chris

    Hi!
     Chris,
If in case you reinstall the O.S of the wired P.C..... In Normal cases you don't have to do anything with the router.........because the router does not install any settings on a P.C .
Once you have reinstalled the O.S(operating system)..does powercycle the entire        network(i.e  first unplug the power from the  router...then the powercable from the modem....wait for 30 sec..and then power on the modem first...wait for the lights on the modem to become stable and plug in the router...) and your P.C should be able to connect to the internet..
And as your wireless P.C's are working fine you don't have to work on them at all..
If in Case you still face any issues...Revert Back to me!!

  • Please Help!   I've got a WRT54GX2 that I used for 2 year...

    Please Help!
I've got a WRT54GX2 that I used for 2 years with no problems.
I recently tried to set up network with different IP DSL (Bellsouth).
The problem is the computer can not "locate" wireless router. Is this due to the Westell modem not being "bridged".

***Note: Make sure that the modem is Bridged and the router is set-up to the Instructions I first gave you. If you still have the issue then follow the below steps. At this point you should find out what is your,
    IP Address =
    Default Gateway =
    Subnet mask =
and provide us with that information.
You can get this info by clicking on Start>>Run>>type "cmd">>click ok, now a black command prompt box will open, type in ipconfig /all
You should see an IP address and default gateway of 192.168.x.xxx
you should see a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
At this time you should power cycle your router and then the modem by removing the power cable from the router, then remove the power cable from the modem. Wait about 60 seconds and plug in the modem and them plug in your router. wait till all the lights on the modem and router are back on. try to connect.
If it still does not work and the IP address is not what I stated, then you will need to reset the modem by holding in the reset button on back of the router for 30 seconds, this will bring the router back to the factory defaults and will remove any prior settings.
    Good Luck,

  • WRT54GX2 file sharing problems

Ok I have read pages and pages on this with no luck. I have 3 computers. two which are wired and a laptop that is not. The two computers that are wired can see each other in the network neighbourhood and their folders files and printers and access them with no problems. I on the other hand with my laptop cannot even ping them. I see my laptop in the NN but nothing else.
    Ping the router fine
Ping the two wired computers nada
there is no AP isolation in the wrt54gx2 so that is out
i have no firewall on any of the machines
the firewall on the router is on of course
all machines can access the internet fine
    tcp/ip on all the machines
the two wired ones are windows xp pro and the laptop that is wireless is xp home so simple file sharing is on for that one.
simple file sharing is also on for the two pro machines
the weird thing is that I cannot even ping the two wired machines. that's why i think it is a router issue but without a setting for AP isolation what do I look for?????????????????
thanks for any ideas you can think of
    Paul

If the two pcs can go online through the router, and pinging the router fine, you should be able to share files with the two of them. If they are not pinging each other, it means there's a firewall blocking it. Turn off the firewalls in each pc.

  • WRT54GX2 does not pick up time from the network...

I have a WRT54GX2 running firmware 1.01.14 and it does not pick up time from the network. I have PacBell (now AT&T) as an ISP and a DSL link. My old Netgear router picks up the time immediately. I am trying to figure out if I have a defective unit or if this is a firmware bug. Without the time, I can not use any of the scheduling functions, nor measure uptime.
Does anyone have this router with the time working? I have set the appropriate time zone.
    Thanks,
    Martin

    Thanks for you ideas.
The backup file appears to be binary. However in searching through it I did see 3 time related text strings, namely: clock.stdtime.gov.tw, time-b.nist.gov and time.nist.gov. I can successfully ping clock.stdtime.gov.tw and time.nist.gov. This reinforces my belief that my ISP (AT&T nee PacBell) is not blocking access.
however ntp works on TCP port 123. ping works on udp 7 afaik. if your old netgear works i guess this is a router problem.
have you reset the router yet? afaik press reset button for 10 seconds.
you will however loose all settings and need to enter them again. it may however fix the issue.Message Edited by linksysinfo on 07-09-2006 03:09 AM

  • WRT54GX2 slow wireless 5.5 mbps speed help please

So I just received my WRT54GX2 and got it hooked up. Here are some details of my equipment which are all experiencing the same issue while connected via wireless.
1 Dell Inspiron wireless G. (updated latest driver)
1 Toshiba laptop wireless G (not sure on driver yet)
1 custom tower with wireless G (updated latest driver)
WRT54GX2 ver 2 with firm ware 1.00.08 (just updated)
Comcast 6 Meg cable internet service with Motorolla cable modem
Here is the problem I am experiencing.
After configuring the WPA2/TKIP settings and getting everybody logged on, the wireless connectivity speed (reported via the windows XP wireless utility) indicates connection speeds of 5.5 Mbs. If I disable the adapter and re-enable it, it connects and is at 54 Mbps for about 1 second, then rapidly drops down to the 5.5 which is where it stays. This problem is replicated on all 3 PC's on the wireless. I have tried adjusting the beacon interval down to 50, even went down to 10 with no result. I changed the RTS threshhold to 2304. Tried setting the transmission rate from auto to 54 Mbps. I tried adjusting the RWIN settings on my PC as suggested in another post here where somebody was experiencing a similar problem. I have installed the Microsoft WPA2 patch (893357) and that made no difference either. I have switched to G only instead of mixed mode. Tried channels 1, 11, 7, 6, and probably most of the others. Moved the router around to different locations in the room. Even sitting within arms reach of it, I still only see the 5.5 Mbps (I have full signal strength BTW). I ran netstumbler and found very few wireless networks within range. And the ones that were had very weak signals. Short of unplugging my cordless phone, I am at a loss of things to try. I may reset the router and try a new config from scratch, but if there is any help on this subject it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch.  If you have not done this since your last firmware upgrade, please do this now.   If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for all your wireless cards.  Note that often the speed of your wireless network is determined by the "weakest link" in your system.  You might want to try to isolate the problem by turning on each wireless computer separately, then two at a time.  You might be able to tell which computer is bringing down your wireless speed.
If you still have trouble, try the following.
For wireless g routers, try setting the "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps. For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
    Hope this helps.

  • WRT54GX2: TCP packets blocked (except SYN/SYN-ACK) to internet

I'm using WRT54GX2 with latest FW 1.01.22 and I've been running into internet connectivity with one of my laptop (Toshiba MX35-S149 using Atheros). From this laptop DNS/ping works to the internet (UDP/ICMP) but all of the TCP data packets from the internet are being blocked by the router (I think). All of the other PC's continue to work with no problem.
Rebooting the router (power cycle) causes thing to work again for this laptop but after some time (15-20 minutes or so) once again the problem comes back. I've already spent about 3 hours with support on this but no luck.
I did a packet capture on the laptop and any HTTP request show TCP SYN, SYN-ACK packets but no data packets. The laptop continues to do the retransmission. At this point I can still PING and DNS resolve any of the names.
The HTTP to the router's page (192.168.1.1) continues to work without any problem (still using the wireless NIC). Hard-wiring the laptop to router works fine.
I asked the support if I can do a packet capture on the router itself but I was told "That is not possible".
I'll add the packet capture files later today.
Any help is appreciated as I don't think I'll get any help from the tech-support.
    TIA,
    Navras

Interesting - I have a similar problem however I am trying to block packets going out. So you say that it allows the TCP for a little while then later it is blocked.
Why are you trying to pass TCP into the computer specifically?
Do you have a firewall on your laptop that you can check the logs off?
I have been with support for my issue which is basically the BLOCKED SERVICES options are all greyed out. I need to block udp/tcp packets from going out on exactly the same router, same firmware as yours. They just read scripts from their help desk manuals and do not really seem to understand problems that are NOT in the scripts. Too bad I was hoping after cisco took over linksys would get better at customer support, not the other way.
I saw a post previously that states that the same router DOES NOT HAVE the blocked services as a function. The manual and screen seem to indicate otherwise.
    Interesting...let us know what happens.

  • WRT54GX2 download slows down

I am experiencing an issue with my WRT54GX2 in that wirelessly I am able to connect and get excellent signal strength and a speed of 54Mbps. Once I start accessing the internet the speed will go down to as low as 11Mbps! All of a sudden pages will not load. What is going on? The signal strength is still 'excellent'. The router has the most current firmware (1.01.22) ( I really cannot determine if this router is a version 1 or a version 2). The wireless card on the laptop (Intel PRO/Wireless 3945) also has the most current firmware. Anyone have any ideas?

There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:

To determine which version of the router you have, check the serial number tag on the bottom of the router.  Usually, the model number and version of your router will be listed there.  If not, many routers have a second tag on them showing a few codes, including "WRT54GX2V2".  If you see this mark and it ends in a V1 or V2, then this is your router's version.   If there is no version mark, phone Linksys (during daytime hours), and ask them to lookup the serial number and tell you what version you have.
    Hope this helps.

Can somebody help me I am running OS x 10.4.8 with airport, Comcast cable , A linksys wrt54gx2 and windows xp sp2. Windows in wired to the router but i want to transfer files and share a printer how can I set this up.

  • WRT54GX2 and Yahoo dsl

    Hello,
    Hardware Below:
    System: G5 OSX version 10.4.9
    Router: WRT54GX2
    Modem: Siemens Speedstream 4100b
    ISP: ATT Yahoo DSL
I'm having some trouble with my Yahoo DSL connection staying active on the router I have. I've had the router since release and used it great with comcast for a couple years with out issue. However since I've made the horrible switch to DSL due to budget I'm pestered with a constant loss of connection.
I tried enabling pppoe on the router but it won't connect to the dsl service. It connects with the DHCP settings I used for comcast however after not using it say over night the connection just drops and I'm forced to power cycle the modem. Is there a way for my router to ping something every 30 seconds or 10 minutes to keep my connection up? I have no way of updating the firmware as I don't see a package designed for the Mac and I'm not sure if it would work using a virtual PC.
Any suggestions from the folks here at linksys or any other users having the same problem?
    Thanks

You could possibly call up the Service Personnel at the
Help Desk, of your Internet Service Provider , and state
them to convert the Modem to Bridge Mode.
When the Modem is bridged, the ISP will authenticate
the Request from the Router, only using the Username
    and Password from your ISP.
    So, Bridge the Modem,
Get the Username and Password from them,
In the Router's Setup Page, Under PPPoE
Settings, Enter the Username [ in the format username@
    ISPname.com/.net ] and Password , Save Settings.
Below the Setup Tab of the Router's Console,
Change the MTU from "AUTO" to "MANUAL" , and
Set the Size to 1400, Save the Settings,
Powercycle the Modem and the Router.
    Check the Connections.
If problem persists, plz revert back . . .
