WRT55AG random router lock up

The company I work for is a small surveying company and I've talked them into purchasing the WRT55AG wireless router and wireless G PCI cards for the computers to avoid the hassle of massive wire crowding under my desk(The server and my computer are tucked away under my desk). I go through and hook everything up and all works well for a few weeks. Now within the past week on 3 seperate occasions the whole network locks up(even those that are wired to the router) and we lose connection to the internet as well as the company server. When I say locked up I'm just talking about the router as each computer still runs fine just no connection. Can I get some direction as in what to look at to resolve this. I would call customer support but after my last outing with them trying to troubleshoot a USB wireless G from my house I've lost faith in their help. They told me I couldn't use the USB connection with a computer that has multiple users on it. LOL, not true. I prefer LINKSYS equipment and have used it for years and never had these kind of problems. I'm at a loss for an explanation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Network notes..
5 computers are wireless(The wireless is setup with MAC filtering and WEP 128 bit encryption)
3 computers are wired (1 being the server)
1 network printer
Internet is provided by DSL(unsure as to which provider but there is no special setup required)

first change a few settings under the advanced wireless settings.....reduce the beacon to 50, reduce the RTS and fragmentation by 40 each....
Also verify that you are using the latest firmware on the router itself....this should prevent your router from locking up.

• [WRT55AG v2] Router soft-resets on own

Hi all. I have some issues with my <6 month old WRT55AG v2 router. I have it set up in between my computers and my cable modem (RCA from Comcast).
Now, during the day at random points (whether the computer is idle or not) the router will stop sending packets through, and I'll get a severe drop in speed. Then, after about 10 seconds of slow internet, it drops completely, and does a "soft-reset" of the router. Like I were to save a setting in the router config.
Not sure what's going on since I've never had a Linksys router do this before. I'm running the v2 of the WRT55AG with 1.67 firmware. I don't have to unplug the router to make it work, it just soft-resets and everything I was doing (instant messaging, FTP, IRC, BitTorrent) gets thrown off and I have to spend time resetting my computer.
On a side note, I have noticed that my router admin area has issues loading in Firefox 1.5. Most of the time, I have to log in, then refresh at least 3 times before the router will actually show the admin page. What could be causing that?
~Brett

Yeah.... I don't think it's due to heat. I think it's due to faulty firmware. Even though I'm using the most up-to-date version, it seems this issue only started once I updated the firmware. But it hasn't reset on its own in the past 24 hours. So we'll see what happens.
I spoke with a Tech guy and he said that you need to hold the reset button in for 1 minute after upgrading firmware. First I'd ever heard of that. So I held it in for 1 minute, and so far no resets. Maybe it solved it... maybe not.
I think its a defective line of product if u ask me.
If this were true, I'd hope that Linksys would feel the need to replace our "defective" product with one of the same type, maybe better, but definately one that works and has the same features as the "defective" line. I know I wouldn't mind shelling out a small amount ($20 - $30) for a better unit with more features. Although an exact replacement would be the best course of action in this case.Message Edited by bpat1434 on 08-10-2006 11:25 PM

• Router Locking Up

I have a BT v2 Router that keeps locking up everytime my OH tries to copy a fairly large file from my Wetern Digital 1TB disk that is hard wired to the router - she is connecting wirelessly,
If I change the router for a Netgear router I have this doesn't happen, however then BT vision fails to work correctly continuously sitting with the red light on.  Has anybosy any ideas how to stop the BT router locking out, other than by connecting her laptop directly to the router?  The only way out of the locked condition is to do a manual reset on the router itself.  The problem doesn't occur under normal conditions of receiving emails via a mail server which is also directly connected to the router - it only seems to happen when an attenpt is made to transfer a fairly large file from the Western Digital drive.

Solved!
Go to Solution.

I'm taking it you haven't tried a full reset of the hub.. have you tried resetting it through the firmware or via the pinhole?
What you need to do is find the small hole on the right side of the Home Hub 2.0 and push it in with a pen, and let it reboot and do what it needs to do, and then you can try transferring the file.

• Random SIM Lock message

Hi All,
Since going to iOS 4.1 I am getting a random SIM-Lock error, the carrier section of my status show no service. I slide to unlock enter my sim code and it picks up reception, but the problem is when it happens I cannot be contacted.
Just wondering will I have to do a recovery on the phone and reinstall or is it a bug?
Thank you in advance.

A couple of things you can try:
1. Power your phone off, wait ~30 seconds, then power your phone back on.
2. Reset your phone: Press the sleep/wake button & home button at the same time, keep pressing until you see the Apple logo, then release(ignore the slide to power off).
If no change after trying the above, post back.

• Complete Router Lock Up - WRT1900AC

I have recently purhcased a WRT1900AC. I also have a Cradle Point I am using as a bridge. After starting from scratch and updating the WRT1900AC I setup my network as follows.
WRT1900AC, all networks 802.11x WPA2, auto 20/40 Mhz, Auto Channel
2.4 Guest
2.4 SSID
5.0 Guest - Disabled
5.0 SSID
Cradle Point:
Bridges to the 5.0 GHz network on the WRT, auto checks for channels and updates accordingly.
Cradle Point bridges to the 5.0 SSID on the WRT1900. There are multiple devices plugged in to the RJ45 ports on both devices. What I am experiencing is a total lock up of the WRT requiring a complete reboot. Wireless stops responding, lan ports will not ping the router, and the system stops functioning. I am running the latest firmware version available from Linksys.
Any informtion or assistance you can provide would be greatly appreacited.

Does the router lock up if you don't use the bridge?
Disable WiFi security on the 5ghz radio temporarily and test to see if bridge connects then if lock up occurrs. Re-enabled after testing.
Change WiFi mode on 5Ghz to single mode N, WPA2 only, Auto channel width and manual channel 48 or 149.

• WRT54G router locks up when connecting wirelessly to a Samsung Blue Player

My WRT54G  router locks up 100% of the time when attempting to connect connect wirelessly to a Samsung Blue Player (Model number BD-P3600). I can connect to it with a cable no problem, but when I attempt to do so wirelessly and type in the password on the Blue Ray player, it attempts to connect but the router locks up and all devices connected to it (wired or wirless) lose connectivity. Any ideas?

Try the following steps:
# Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page.
# Then Click on wireless Tab select Channel Width to 20 MHz only and Channel to 6, 9, and 11. Click Save Settings.
#Adjust the following advanced wireless settings:
~~ Lower the beacon interval from 100 to 50
~~ Lower the fragmentation threshold from 2346 to 2306
~~ Lower the RTS threshold from 2347 to 2304
Then check the connectivity status..

• Random Shutdown: Locked Clockspeed, Processor Voltage Correlation?

I use Hardware Monitor to keep track of more sensor readouts than just temps. I recommend everyone install it. Using it, I've discovered some weird behavior in the processor clockspeed and voltage that correlates in a predictable with my typical macbook random shutdown problem. I wonder if others witness the same correlation.
Normally, according to my sensor readings, the clockspeed and cpu voltage fluctuate frequently and continually, presumably according to the demands on the processor. Clockspeed typically runs between 1333Mhz and 2000Mhz, voltage between 1.00 and 1.30V.
When running like this, it is subject to random shutdowns at any time, but most especially — indeed with absolute reliability, so to speak — within ten minutes of waking from sleep — regardless of whether i'm using mail, surfing, playing music, or running intense calculations and (so far as i can tell), regardless of how many or few processes are running simultaneously, and regardless of temperature readings. Indeed, now with the new firmware update my temps are quite low. In fact, since the computer most reliably shuts down soon after waking up, it's temp at shutdown often registers no more than the mid-50s (it'll shut down at 47).
After the macbook shuts down, it refuses to restart reliably with a simple press of the power button. Like many others, I have to hold down the power button for about ten seconds, until I hear the pained protracted beep, before the computer will enter into the normal booting process.
After it boots up like this from a shutdown — and this is what I haven't seen enough commentary on — the processor speed remains locked at 1000Mhz and the voltage at .99V until the computer goes to sleep again.
While the computer is locked into this slow-clockspeed-low-voltage mode, it is absolutely reliable. It never shuts down randomly. It runs much slower. Which is really noticeable and frustrating when using any graphics-intense or movie app.
So my questions are:
Does anyone else experience this sort of locking processor behavior?
Why would the processor lock like this?
Is it possible that the sensors are wrong? That in fact the processor is fluctuating normally but now the computer doesn't "know" it?
How would the processor's ability to vary its clockspeed and the voltage it draws affect its propensity to shutdown randomly?
I would be grateful for the observations of others regarding clockspeed and voltage at shutdown and after rebooting.
Thanks.
macbook 2.0 Ghz, 1.25GB, 80GB, week 20 Mac OS X (10.4.7)

hi
I have exactly same problems and symptoms.
It was a refurbished week 20 unit from apple uk it arrived in excellent condition and worked perfectly for two weeks without the fan comeing on at all it was perfectly quiet but hot.
As this was my first mac I was unaware that this was abnormal I had heard that they ran hot but being new to mac I was on a learning curve. Then two days after the remorse return period it began to shut down the first time was after a period of sleep just after I opened the lid. It then was and still is impossible to start it from warm or cold in the normal way, but only by holding the power down until beep. Then it will work for days at 27 deg c without a problem all be it at the 1 gig reduced speed which as you say is frustrating to say the least. Applecare UK don't acknowledge the problem at all they just want to treat it as a normal warrenty repair at my inconvenience. I am at present awaiting a more generous response from apple. I'm demanding a replacement unit but they just want we to fill out their standard web questionaire. (with non relavant tick boxs) If only one could speak to a real knowledgeable individual at apple I'm sure I'd get some satisfaction. But in this age of executive big bonuses what can one expect.
I hope Apple get real with this soon because the disscussion forums are getting overloaded with this issue its getting harder to login have you noticed.
yours unhappy customer.

• Help:  hard wiring MAC MIni to Linksys wrt55ag wirelss router

I hope someone can help me with this, it is driving me nuts. I have a mac mini that is hard wired to a Linksys wrt55ag wireless a and g router. To make thinks worse. I have a linksys voice over IP box.
I can get it to work but i keep losing the connect and the phone keeps cutting in and out. It seems that the mini, even though hardwired to the wireless router, loses its conenction to the router. It is unable to find it.
I am close to scaping the whole thing, has anyone heard of this problem? is their a solution?
I set up using dhcp in the mini mac and ppoe in the router. Have both the mini mac and the woip router hard wired to Linksys wrt55ag.

Since you are using PPPoE, I assume that you have the Linksys router connected, via Ethernet, to a DSL modem...correct?
If so, if you connect the Mini directly to the modem, is the connection still unstable?

• Router Locks Up

This WRT54G has locked up twice since being purchased 4 days ago and needs a power reset to bring it back online. When it stops, the unit appears fully functional (front panel lights & web interface) but the connection to the internet is lost.
Wireless is currently disabled and it has a static IP address and is connected to a cable modem.
The only extra configuration is one entry in Applications & Gaming to port forward Remote Desktop (TCP 3389) to 192.168.1.2

Hi, the ISP is TelstraClear in New Zealand www.telstraclear.co.nz
I have a fixed IP of 202.78.149.187 and the router is version 7 with firmware 7.00.1
Previously I had a Watchguard SOHO but it was limiting my connection speed.

• Random router problems ("Disconnects")

I have a BEFW1154 ver 4 that I got from a neighbor.
It has worked normal before when I used it at my relatives house. But now after I got high-speed at my place, it seems to 'disconnect' for no reason after a random amount of time (I don't know how long, but it happens enough to be annoying). (I don't really think disconnect is the right word, as without the router, the internet is fine.)
I usually just turn off and on the power to the router and it then works again.
Any suggestions?
I know that this is a common problem, and that the router I have is old, and I should get a new one (I will later this year) but for now, I need this to work.
It also seems that when I am using the wireless feature, everything works fine. My Nintendo DS and Wii work without ever having problems with the wireless internet.
Thanks!

access the router ui by http://192.168.1.1 .. keep the username blank and enter the password ( by default it is "admin" ).. on the ui, under "status" tab , check the router's firmware...
the latest firmware is 1.52.02 .. if the router does not have the latest one , go to www.linksys.com/download and select BEFW11S4 v4 .. download the firmware and save it to the desktop..
on the router ui , go to "administration" tab and click "firmware upgrade"..browse the file and hit upgrade...
after the firmware is upgraded, reset the router and reconfigure it....
also, under the "setup" tab , change the MTU settings to 1396 ....

• MBA screen randomly freezes, locks up after upgrade to Mavericks

Sometimes my MacBookAir5,2 freezes, not allowing any input from the keyboard and trackpad (I don't use/have a mouse) except for the power key to force quit it. It happens AFAICT randomly, maybe while I'm browsing. In this case there're no crash reports or related messages in Console.app by the time it locks up.
Other times it freezes and WindowServer crashes and I'm logged out. For that you can check the reports below.
I don't know if both problems are related. This all started when I moved to effing Mavericks from Mountain Lion (which was pretty solid and I'd probably return to).
I reset the SMC a couple of times to no avail. Any hints as to what could be causing it or how can I further troubleshoot this problem?

I agree with Bob, run EtreCheck and post the results here.
A couple of questions. You mentioned resetting the SMC, have you tried zapping the PRAM? If not, you can do this by:
Shutting your Mac all the way down.
Restarting your Mac and immediately pressing the Command-Option-P-R keys simultaneously.  Make sure you press the keys before the gray screen comes up.
Hold those keys down until your Mac reboots again and you here the startup sound.
Let go of the keys so your Mac reboots as per usual.
Also, how long after upgrading to Mavericks did this problem start?

• Router lock up?!?

OK Heres the situation. Ive owned a WRT54G (v5) for about 2-3 years, every things worked fine (Minus the slowdown after about 2 weeks of hardcore torrent d/ling, But a power cycle fixes that np)
We have 6 computers in the house 4 wireless 2 wired:
2 sony Vios (one vista one XP pro)
1 compaq Presario Vista
3 pcs (one with a linksys wireless adapter, 2 Hard lined)
Ok Well we've had hiccups in the past but ive found work arounds and other such.
But last night Suddenly we werent able to access the net (could still see others shared stuff in windows.) But couldnt Ping 192.168.1.1 from any comp. Well after about 7 resets i gave up and thought the router finally borked itself. Becuase of all those online + someone brought an Xbox 360 over (wireless, wasnt the 360 since i tryed it without wireless dogle attached)
The room it was in was also very very hot so i figured maybe the router over heated. Well, We drove to walmart and got a new spiffy WRT110 Rangebooster Router took it home set it up had a hiccup like before but it went away after one power cycle YAY we spent 2am -6 am online all was good Me and my gf went to sleep, wake up to the Network being down agian. *sigh*
Well one of my roomates called charter and they said it was the modem or so they thought so we traded it in and got a new one. Go home set that up do the router thing get online .. 5 mins later cant access webpages only shared folders and cant ping 192.168.1.1 So 2 calls to Linksys and charter later was still doing it. Linksys rep said routers to blame return it, charter said Routers to blame not them.
So we tried one last ditch effort lets move the router to the coldst room in the house!
IT WORkS! Me and my Gf were On the web for 3 hours No problems (5/6 pcs on the web) Heres where the fun part comes in.
Roomates gf comes home grabs her compaq laptop opens it .... Were all off the net, router cant be pinged.. she closes it we power cycle and here we are .... She cant even open her laptop without it kicking us off.
Is there a problem with a Vista (Which i have no clue about) thats locking the router up ? Or is 6 things connected at once doing us in.
The router and modem are now in the coolest room so its not overheating. But if she has her laptop open within 5 mins were kicked and i cant access the router at all ! Any help Please!!!!!!

router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power
cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable
to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug
in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!
Also, the advanced wireless settings to Beacon Interval=50,Frag
thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet
Requests & it will definately work!!!

• Shift key randomly gets locked without being pressed (mbp 13" retina, late 2012)

I've been looking everywhere for answers for this problem, with no success (although many people raise similar questions on older models).
My MBP 13" retina 10.8.2 is new, clean, nothing spilled on it.
Ocassionally I connect it to external keyboard and mouse (USB or BT).
Regardless of that, sometimes the SHIFT key gets randomly locked - Without being pressed (whether the native keyboard, or when connected to external).
I could just be browsing the internet or be viewing a document in Word or GDocs, and suddenly - while mouse-scrolling - things will get selected, and the mouse-click becomes SHIFT-Click only.
When it happens, disconnecting/reconnecting the external keyboard or mouse has no effect - the problem persists.
The only workaround I found is to put it to SLEEP when it happens, and immediately wake it up.
The problem started a few weeks ago, and the behavior is completely random (it can happen twice in 10 minutes, or once a week).
Any ideas anyone?
PS - Apple Discussion Board - How come you forgot to put "Keyboard" as a Category for posts?

• Random system lock-up or freeze / Linux 3.4

Hi
My system seem to regularly lock-up in the linux 3.4[1] series. Whenever this happens, I had to power cycle the system by holding down the power button. Keyboard, numlock, mouse wouldn't work. I'm still looking-out for a pattern that trips this lock-up consistently. The lock-up doesn't happen for days and can happen every other day as well.
During this lock-up nothing gets captured in the system log too. I parsed 'journalctl -a'. Here is a sample from such a lock-up:
Jun 30 18:01:01 chaembian /usr/sbin/crond[4747]: pam_unix(crond:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0)
Jun 30 18:01:01 chaembian /USR/SBIN/CROND[4748]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly)
Jun 30 20:45:03 chaembian kernel: Initializing cgroup subsys cpuset
Jun 30 20:45:03 chaembian kernel: Initializing cgroup subsys cpu
I noticed the lock-up around 18:30 and instead of forcing it to shutdown, I thought I would give it sometime to snap out of it. But nothing happened until 20:45, when I forced the restart. The only other anomalies are (picking out their first apperances):
Jun 25 13:57:33 chaembian kernel: BUG: Bad rss-counter state mm:ffff880115e10a80 idx:1 val:-2
Jun 25 13:57:34 chaembian kernel: BUG: Bad rss-counter state mm:ffff880115e10a80 idx:2 val:2
during shutdown
and
Jun 10 10:08:57 chaembian kernel: r8169 0000:05:00.0: eth0: link down
Jun 10 10:08:57 chaembian kernel: r8169 0000:05:00.0: eth0: link down
Jun 10 10:08:57 chaembian kernel: NOHZ: local_softirq_pending 08
during boot[2]
I'm not sure if these precipitate the lock-ups but these are the things that stand out in the logs for my untrained eyes.
> uname -a
Linux chaembian 3.4.4-2-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Sun Jun 24 18:59:47 CEST 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Let me know if you require any more information.
1 - I was a regular -ck patched user. Since the time the series started serving 3.4 series, I was having lock-ups. Since the stock was still at 3.3 then, I was using the stock as I was trying understand the issue from the logs. But ever since stock moved into 3.4, the lock-ups are happening in this as well. Again, since I have not been able to recreate the issue on demand, I'm not able to attribute the regression to 3.4 conclusively.
2 - A similar issue that was reported from last year will be System lock-ups or software resets, with increased ethernet activity. But the key difference is that my logs have just one instance of this message generated at the time of boot.

Yes, that's how I have it setup. Until today's forced power cycling earlier today, the journal had all the entries from June 10th. The system gets proper shutdown daily (there is a power shortage where I live and to counter there is a scheduled, daily power shedding for 1 hour).
