WRT600N Storage Encryption...Is it possible?

Has anyone found a way to encrypt the storage device or a folder on it?
Even if the drive is formatted NTFS, Windows XP does not allow the option of encrypting a folder on virtual drives.
Every application I've found is designed to mount the encrypted container as a virtual drive. I thought for sure I could get TrueCrypt to work, but no luck so far.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
P.S. Note to Linksys Engineers: Please add this option to your next firmware update. A network shared drive is rather useless if data cannot be secured.

Problem solved!
TrueCrypt does work. I'm not sure why it didn't the first few times I tried to set it up, but after re-formatting the drive with NTFS again it finally started working.
I would still prefer an option in the firmware to enable encryption, but at least there is a work around available.

The Time Capsule is by default a network hard drive, but it has no "brains" of it's own. So, it cannot function as a stand alone media server if that is what you are asking.
If you are also using the Time Capsule hard drive for Time Machine backups of your Mac(s), then there may be struggle for available space on the drive since it is not possible to partition the Time Capsule drive in a traditional manner.
If space is getting tight on the Time Capsule, it might be a good idea to connect a drive to the USB port on the Time Capsule and use that drive for your network storage needs.

The main error in this position is thinking ANY sized SSD can be "storage"
Any Macbook SSD should be idealized as a working platform computer system, containing all your applications, documents, and weekly-use necessary files; and all media files such as ‘big-data’ (music/PDF collections/video/pictures), unless directly needed in the near future, should be kept off the computer and on external storage USB or likewise bare hard drives.

Encrypted mailserver setup possible?

Hi,
Since some time I keep telling myself I should start to host my email myself instead of trusting a (commercial) company like gmail. So I've been thinking a lot about the required setup, but I can't figure out a good way that suits my needs/requirements.
I'm renting a small virtual server, with only 256MB ram, but that should suffice. I'm not sending/receiving thousands of emails a day. I'm sharing this server with a friend, we both have root acces. This complicates the setup somewhat .
Requirements:
- Store email encrypted on the server, a database would be nice but is certainly not a requirement.
- Only acces the encrypted mailstorage when I acces the system. The system should not contain my private key/password, so upon login it should put all the received emails into the encrypted storage.
- Web acces (squirrel/roundcube)
- Be able to search through the email
Known limits:
I'm well aware that with sharing root acces on the server I won't be able to get a system that guarantees me 100% privacy. But there are practical limits and there is some trust. For real privacy I should not trust upon the server, but use pgp. Although pgp is very good, many people i often communicate with don't know it. So please don't point this out, I know about this. The discussion is not about sharing root making it impossible to get this 100% secure, but about storing the mails encrypted and getting the best system possible for this.
The mails will be received unencrypted and should pass an anti-spam system unencrypted. Also will the mail be stored in a queue until I perform a login.
There are 3 reasons for wanting to store the mails encrypted: It will stop my co-root from simply using cat in the maildir/database, it will keep my mails save if there would be an 'intruder' on the server and it keeps the mail private if the hosting company would look into my files (or has to give access to a government/police).
I hope this is possible and some archers can help me to point to the required software . Some personal experiences with a similar setup would be great!

Some more digging seems to point out there is not yet any email server supporting what we want. I've found this blog: https://grepular.com/Automatically_Encr … ming_Email. It's going for the gpg option, like Stebalien was suggesting. It seems to be the best way too do it, without to much hassle.
I hope I can find some time somewhere in the upcoming days to fiddle with it. I'll let you know if i'm getting any concrete results .

Configure iSCSI multipath in OVM 3.1.1 with storage plug-in not possible ?

I have a configuration with 4 iSCSI paths to storage system. All is working fine if the discover and login
process was performed manual. Multipath is working well with 4 paths.

I want to configure iSCSI multipath in OVM manager using specific storage plug-in.
I proceed “Discover SAN Server” with following parameter:
Name: Storage-Name
Storage Type: iSCSI Storage Server
Storage Plug-in: Fujitsu ETERNUS
Admin Host: IP-Addr. of storage system
Admin Username: user name to access storage system
Admin Password: password
Access Host (IP) Address: 192.168.10.1
After this configuration I see my storage system and assigned physical volumes to an access group.
Now the volumes are available on the OVM storage server, >>>> but I lost the multipath functionality <<<<<.

The reason for this behavior is that only one Access Host (IP) Address can be specified.
With this IP address a session was established … but only 1 session and not 4 !!
How can I specify the remaining 3 paths to have proper multipath functionality?
I know that Citrix XenServer accepts more Access Host (IP) Addresses,
e.g. 192.168.10.1,192.168.10.2,192.168.20.1,192.168.20.2

Yes, you are right. The storage plug-in is for management of the storage within OVM.
This is working well, but I'm still missing the multipath fuctionality. This storage plug-in is not responisble
for establish the multipath, but OVM should take care of this.

Yes, OVM did only open one session and loggin only to one target, because only one Access Host (IP) Address: 192.168.10.1
can be specified.

In my point of view it is not possible to configure the remaining targets, so this is a design problem.

WRT600N Storage Link Does Not Work

This is a great idea, but simply does not appear to work.
Situation: WinXP Pro box, Win Vista Premium box, assorted XP home laptops, etc. Want to store common files on the router's storage link for access from anywhere on the wired or wireless network.
Problem: Folders created on the linked USB hard drive were originally fully accessible by any computer on the network, but became somehow unreadable and unwriteable -- EVEN TO THE WRT WEB INTERFACE
Can't read files in these folders, can't write either, of course. Can't even use the WRT600's web interface to "delete" the folder. (returns a page not found error in IE7). "Edit" doesn't work either -- page loads for edits, but attempting to save changes gives a page not found or "cannot display the web page" error. This doesn't work in Firefox, either.
As I try to create a folder now via the web interface with firefox, I see that doesn't work either. It takes the name, refreshes the screen as if something's being created, but on return, nothing is there. Same now with IE7. Sigh, this just gets worse as I double-check and try to get this post properly prepared.
Just reset this thing, and it let me (via web interface) create and delete one folder, but then stopped working 30 seconds later.
I tested a USB stick and got similar terrible results.
I'm running the latest firmware *.35
This thing simply doesn't work. It's not even a good beta. I'll have to advise anyone considering a purchase of this router to forget it. What a frustrating waste of time and money.

Yes, I'm reluctant to also, like so many others, report that the WRT600N fails to perform without error in the handling of an attached usb harddrive.
It does not maintain a stable user priviledge base, even loosing administrator access privledges to the drive.
I have reformatted the drive using the WRT600N web interface. This made sure the harddrive was formated using the native drivers in the device (FAT32). I suspect that this device uses an internal linux variant and it's my understanding that NTFS formats (of which I think there are at least 4 versions) are not well supported under linux. This did not improve the reliability of the drive. I wonder if the priveledge table is not stored on the drive, but in some internal memory, and it's not stable.
Any suggestions?

I have the WRT600N wireless router which has a Storage Link capable of being turned into an FTP Server. I have set up the FTP server, and I can see folders, but not files within the folders. I have it set up to display the /public/FTP_Server folder as the FTP server, I have a Jpeg file in the folder, but I cannot see it in the FireFox FTP browser. When I type /hello.jpg at the end of the address line, it says "No such file" or something like that. How do I access my files on the server? My server is ftp://the-sir-lar-network.ath.cx and the file is in that folder and it's called "hello.jpg". EDIT: Log in with username: guest password:"" (no password)

Storage Systems in Java possible??

I have basic knowledge of Java programming, I have to make a final year project and i was wondering if developmenet of Network Storage Systems such as quota Advisor or Quota Server by Norther is possible to develop using the Java Language??

Quota Server Not really.
To implement this requires a lot of operating system dependent stuff and also probably requires hooking into the operating system (basically creating or altering drivers.) And that sort of thing is best done using C/C++.
However, you also need to manage that which means having a cute GUI front end. You could use java for that part.

Another WRT600N storage link bug with Vista

Yet another annoyance with the WRT600N and Vista. Files made by the vista box on storage link (or made by xp, mixed system) suddenly become "write protected" but not really. Upon trying to delete files on this storage linked media, I get this error message:
An unexpected error is preventing the operation. Make a note of this error code, which might be useful if you get additional help to resove this problem: Error 0x8007045D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.
This seems to be a permissions snafu between the linked storage and Vista. The XP box can usually delete this stuff. Checking properties shows it to be completely free of read only or other flags that would prevent the deletion.
Any idea?

I'm getting the same problem only with the Linksys WRT650N router. I have a 1TB Cavalry USB drive connected, formatted NTFS (by Vista). I have Vista Business x64. 4gig RAM, AMD Athalon x2 6400 @ 3.4Ghz.
If I repair the LAN connection I can delete two files and then it goes back to saying I don't have the permissions.
Micorsoft says it's Linksys' problem. I haven't talked with Linksys because I just know they are going to say it's MS' problem.
Anyway, anybody have any ideas or solutions to this problem?

WRT600N Storage Link Problems

I'm just adding to the litany of woes regarding the problems with the Storage Link feature on this router, but I wanted to point out some specifics based on my sorry experience, since others seem to be somewhat different or lacking in detail. Here is my summary:
Router firmware version 1.0.36 Build 4 (one release up from what is currently on Linksys' web site)
Connected Western Digital My Book 750GB USB 2.0 external drive, first formatted via computer to NTFS, and then plugged in to the router's USB port..
Got everything set up properly including shared folders on external drive, user access, permissions, etc, and mapped network drives on laptop (Vista Home Premium) and desktop (XP Home) computers, so far so good.
Attempted (twice) a drive image backup of laptop using StorageCraft ShadowProtect Desktop 3.2 (latest release). Backup completed (44GB), and I could see the file on the external network drive, but file was corrupt and failed verification.
After much research, decided to re-format the external network drive using the router's formatting capability. Discovered that router will only format using FAT32, but proceeded anyhow, and again successfully set up shared folders, user access, permissions, etc.
Since FAT32 will not address files larger than 4 GB, decided to abandon a drive image backup, so tried a files-and-folders backup from the laptop using Genie Backup Manager Home 8.0. This was successful as long as I didn't try to back up so many files and folders that the resulting file was larger than 4GB.
Also copied individual files and folders over to external drive with no problem, but had to exclude a video file that was slightly larger than 4 GB.
Re-formatted the external network drive to NTFS again using the computer, and tried another files-and-folders backup from the laptop using Genie, this time purposely selecting enough files to push the backup file size over 4 GB. This should have worked since the drive was formatted to NTFS, but the backup failed twice.
Conclusion: Storage Link implementation only allows basic capability to move files and folders less than 4 GB in size due to it's FAT32 format limitation, and is totally unsuitable for using automated backup software to backup large numbers of files or do drive imaging to the network drive. So if all you want to do is move files manually to the network drive, and don't have any huge files larger than 4 GB, and don't care about automated backups, then Storage Link seems to work OK. However, IMHO, this is WAY too limiting, and does not even come close to a NAS solution. I'm returning my router today, because it is hard to tell when a firmware upgrade might be released that would remove these serious limitations.
Sorry if this it really long, but I felt the details are important if anyone from Linksys is reading this.

Hi All I have just seen exactly the same issue with some files I use which are 4.7GB. If I try and move the files from the computer to the storage which connected to the router I get a message that I dont have enough space. I get the same error if I put the files on via the computer and then connect the storage back to the router and try and access them. In this day and age over 4GB is not a massive file and this is a bit of a poor show :-( Cheers Phil

I Don't have any additional apps on the computer other than what it came with and it shows 9.89GB of storage used for Apps. Should be closer to 5 any suggestions?

[SOLVED] Chrome OS + Arch w/ full system encryption: Is it possible?

I want to dual boot Chrome OS and Arch on a Chromebook. More importantly, I want to run Arch with full system encryption, such as with dm-crypt.
As I understand it, in order to use full disk encryption, /boot must be a non-encrypted partition. If I didn't want to dual boot CrOS, this wouldn't be a problem. If I change the partitioning, it's unlikely that CrOS will boot.
Has anyone successfully dual booted Chrome OS and Arch with full-disk encryption? And, if so, I'd appreciate your guidance. Thanks!!

Owe, and no you can not have hidden-volume with dm-crypt.
If you really want to have a secure OS to boot to.
You should make a small partition on your drive.
Put the tails linux OS .iso on it

Now get a micro SD card and encrypt that for keeping data on.
Then if you have to destroy the data, you just snap the micro SD card in a few pieces, but if you don't have time to destroy it then it is at least encrypted.
If you are really worried about like the NSA or FBI getting your data... You probaly should not even have the data in the USA at all.
Instead, rent a VPS in like Malaysia, Russia, Hong Kong, bla, bla bla...
Pay for the VPS with BitCoin, Bitcoin you bought on #bitcoin-otc freenode IRC channel, that you connected to though the freenode TOR-HIdden Service IRC server. You will also want to do some bitcoin Tumbling before you use it. To tumble the bitcoin. You could simply transfer the bitcoin to an account on silkroadvb5piz3r.onion then transfer the bitcoin back to you.
.... OWE, and configure your bitcoin client to connect to the bitcoin network through TOR.
Only connect to the VPS through TOR.
Create a TOR-Hidden service to host SSH on the VPS
Then use like sshfs to mount a remote directory on that VPS.
Then create a TrueCrypt volume on that sshfs mounted directory, and keep your data in that.
