WRT610 and USB Speed

So I have a new 610n and just hooked up an NTFS format 500GB disk to the USB port.
When transferring files from my laptop to the 610n USB drive (via a gigabit Ethernet link) I am only seeing something around 3-4MB/s transfer rates. This seems incredibly slow!
If I connect the drive directly to the laptop's USB port I get around 30-40MB/s speeds (i.e. I max out the USB 2 bandwidth). Also, If I connect the USB drive to another computer on the network (my desktop PC has a 100mbs Ethernet connection to the 610n) I get around 11MB/s i.e I max out the Ethernet link.
My guess is that this isn't a networking problem but rather a 610n USB driver problem.
Does this sound right or have I done something incredibly stupid.
Thanks, Pete

In this case you should try to Upgrade your router's firmware and then re-configure it...
Download Firmware 7.27 MB...
Follow these steps to upgrade the firmware on the device : -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...
In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
Click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' and browse the .bin firmware file and click on "Upgrade"...
Wait for few seconds until it shows that "Upgrade is successful"  After the firmware upgrade, click on "Reboot" and you will be returned back to the same page OR it will say "Page cannot be displayed".
Now reset your router :
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
NOTE : You should disconnect your Hard Drive while upgrading and resetting the router...

  • USB/FireWire usage increases CPU temp and fan speed

    Hi,
I'm curious, does the usage of USB and FireWire ports increase CPU temperature and fan speed...?
I have an M-Audio Fast Track USB interface plugged in and whenever I play any songs from iTunes using that interface as an output, my CPU temp increased and fan speed jumped from 2000 to 3300 rpm. And on separate occasion, an 8GB of file transfer from an external FireWire-based HDD had both fans speed up to 4,400 rpm.
Is this normal...? All these were done with an external display plugged onto the MBP with "clamshell" mode.

USB operations involves quite a bit of CPU action, Elphidieus.
Firewire places less demand on the CPU but, in a situation like the one you describe can involve both increases in power usage and in HD temperatures.
The fan speeds on Macs are not simply responsive to CPU usage. Both HD temps and power usage can also play a part in the equation that ultimately produces the fan speed. As HDs have much lower heat tolerance than CPUs you will find that it is quite common to see the fans ramp up when doing a large file transfer over FW (or USB, for that matter) , especially if the internal HD temp gets to over about 50-55º Celsius.

  • Equium and other laptops in general and Usb 2 speed problems with stuff

    Hi
    I use a TOP2049 programmer
I cant use it to program some types of chips using the laptop.
Main machine can reduce speed of usb to 12mbps but laptop cant reduce this in the bios
Is there a way to do this?
    Does someone know?

    Hi
I have checked my both Toshiba notebooks for this option but it seems that its not possible to change the USB speed.
I think this isnt an important option because normally its not necessary to change the USB speed. So its not available on notebooks.
I think you must program on your PC. Normally on PCs you have more options in BIOS.

  • Switching between the firewire connection and USB 2.0 Connection

Is it possible to switch between the firewire connection and USB 2.0 Connection on a portable external hard drive? I've tried unsuccessfully to use the firewire connection on my external hard drive after using the 2.0 connection. No machine will read the drive if it is connected via the firewire port. Using USB 2.0 it works as intended.

    Hello Grizzly Marmot,
Thank you for the feedback. So probably my old MAXTOR enclosure is playing me tricks ....
Last night the backup on my USB 2.0 was terribly slow ??? The incremental duplication of my hard drive (372.9 MB of data from 35GB of complete data) gave me these stats:
    Copied : 6232 files, 372,9 Mo
    Average : 8,8 Mo/minute (4,5 copying, 148,1 verifiying)
Just to analyse the drive it takes ±45 minutes ??? Also could the energy saving mode be a slow down factor (the suspension of the computer is NEVER) ???
I still wonder what speed I could experience for a wireless backup to a NAS drive ??
    Thanks for helping.

  • USB Speed

First off, I am disappointed that the new iPod I have been waiting for (video and photo and music) no longer supports FIREWIRE. I use a lot of firewire disks, audio interface, and have a nice hub... but if I decide to obtain a new iPod I now have to examine my USB speed.
When you use the profiler tool and look at the USB tree on my 1.25GHz G4 iMac, you see three separate USB devices - two are 12 MBs and one iw 480 MBs - The keyboard and printer are on the slower ports, and I have a SanDisk reader apparently on the faster port.
Is that the case that not all of the USB connections are high-speed USB? Should I be expecting that at least one USB connection on this computer will be a high speed USB?
    Thanks

All three of the USB ports on your computer are USB 2.0; the keyboard as well as any USB devices plugged in to the keyboard will operate at USB 1.1 speed. The printer may also operate at USB 1.1 speeds.

  • How to add Airport Express and USB 2?

    Hello all,
I have a Titanium 1ghz that currently has no Airport. I'd like to add Airport Express and USB 2. I know I can do both via the PCMCIA slot, but only one at a time.
(Before you say: Just add USB 2 via the slot, and then add a WiFi dongle via the new USB -- I need to use the Airport for Internet Sharing (the PB is going to be a slim little server/Airport hub), and I've never seen anyone (including me) succeed at getting an internet connection shared via a dongle.)
FWIW, the main reason I need the USB 2 is to connect a pair of external hard drives. If I could connect the USB drives via the Firewire ports, I'd be all set. Are there adapters that would let me do this?
    Thoughts? They're much appreciated.
    SJ

No, there aren't. But it would be simple enough to replace your USB-only external drive enclosures with enclosures that have FireWire ports. Just swap the drive mechanisms themselves into the new enclosures. FireWire would give you better speed than USB2, and if your enclosures have two FW ports (say, one FW 400 and one FW 800) and their own power supplies, then you could daisy-chain both drives on the Tibook's single FW port.
Of course if you can get by without having the two drives connected at the *same time* as you're using the wifi connection, then a USB2 PC Card and a wifi PC Card (like this one) will serve you just fine.

  • HomeHub 3 - USB speeds painfully slow - known issu...

    Hello I have a BT HomeHub 3 - FW version 12 - on Infinity Option 2.
I have recently bought a WD 2TB external drive and connected it to the USB port on the homehub in the hopes to have all my media on it to share across the network.
It attached fine, was detected fine, and I've successfully mapped it as a network drive on my PC without a problem.
The drive is formatted in NTFS, and my PC is connected to the homehub via the gigabit port.
The read and write speeds though are painfully slow - pretty much solid at 2.0MB/s. Is this just "how it is" or is there a solution, because as it stands I can't see the point in there even being a USB port! I could download another version of the file 4 times faster from the internet than I could copy it locally to the HDD!!
I can't find any information about this or indeed see many complaints, so I'm wondering if this is just mine?
Any feedback would be appreciated - happy to receive technical answers.
    Thanks for any help!

Keith, I have to say that your answer gives no technical insight of the situation,
I highly doubt that this device does not have the processing power to do a transfer of more than 2-3 Mb/Sec,
Don't forget there's even a gigabit ethernet port, and you can easily achieve very high speeds using lan or even the internet connection - forget that this is due to the hub being slow - no chance.
Second point you mention, SMB protocol is not that efficient, that's not the reason for slow speeds again. I can confirm I've got an SMB server setup on a Linux 5 yeard old netbook in the Lan and it's still performing faster than 2 Mb / Sec. SMB is again NOT the problem.
It's most likely a firmware issue where the USB port is either throttled down intentionally or not utilized as a proper USB 2.0 port - I think BT or whoever makes this box ought to give the community an explanation on the matter. When claiming that the usb port can be used to connect storage media they should also mention that the maximum speed is not more than 3 Mb/Sec - otherwise the statement is misleading as most people know that usb storage media perform a lot faster when connected to computers.
It's like someone telling you, that his car drives like ferrari, but not telling you that it cannot do more than 20 mph.

  • OSX NAS with MacMini and USB HDD's

I have been trying to figure out what would be the best solution for a making a few TB's of storage available to all users in my home network.
I tried AEBS, but the performance is just way too slow. If I were to setup a macMini with attached FW and USB drives, how would I make those drives available to my users on my home network?
Also, do I need to leave the system logged in as a user or can I just share out drives and partitions and leave them?
    I'm new to OSX networking.
    Thanks

any clients connecting via wifi will experience slower file access. Make sure the wireless clients are using 802.11n then you can achieve acceptable speeds.

When using a computer as a server it needs to on 24/7. It is best to have a user logged in even if no one uses that mac as a deskop as it make it easier to remotely administrate it over vnc for example

  • MacPro Front Firewire and USB Ports Acting Up

Devices connected to the front firewire 800 and USB ports on my MacPro are acting up. (2x2.66GHz dual-core, early 2007) I put a firewire rugged LaCie onto the firewire port and the MacPro hung. The drive works fine on my MacBook. On the MacPro, the CPU on all cores ran up to 100% and the machine became inaccessible. I put a 80 GB video iPod on the USB port and it could not sync without errors. Could not eject the iPod - OS X reported that an application was accessing the device, even though nothing was running.
It seems as though connecting devices to the front ports initiates a process that does not behave and/or teminate correctly. All other ports work OK, including those on the back of the machine and the USB and firewire ports on my Cinema display.

OK, a couple of things. First, have you tried another USB cable? You may have one that is flaky at USB2 speeds which can cause all sorts of mischief.
Have you tried both "free" USB ports on the machine, or the USB port on the machine that you have the keyboard hooked to?
Finally, you may find some information in your system log that would point to the answer.
In my own experience, USB2 on the G5 has not been capable of reaching serious transfer rates. While I get transfer rates close to 60 MB/sec through FW800, I have never gotten more than about 13 MB/sec through USB2, using several flavors of external drive/SATA toaster/enclosure interfaces. However, I have also had bad USB cables lock the machine up like the Tin Man.

  • MacMini and OSX and USB

I have a OSX Leopard Server on a MacMini with 2 USB drives. I share both of them but when I enter the share names (AFP and SMB) in the share Points menu, the previous drive takes the name of the second name I enter so they end up having both the same share name. I don't know if that's is clear, english is not first language.
Is there a limitation of the shared drives via USB ?

I tried AEBS, but the performance is just way too slow.

  • K7N2G SP1 and USB !!

    Hi,
I've just installed SP1a from windows to have access to the USB 2.0 but the problem is that when i have installed SP1 all my USB stopped working !!!!!!! none of them was working anymore so i uninstalled SP1 and it works again !!! How it is possible ????
I had a similar problem 6 months ago my USB were leaving and reappearing whenever they wanted !!!
    Thanks for any idea
    Rumps.
P.S. There is something strange happenning to my CPU fan it's making some strange noise since 1 week. Any idea ? I cleaned it 2 days ago  and it is still making noise !!! Even if the temperature is around 55° when windows is working more if I play and the speed is around 4800 which is normal.
    I have an AMD 2000+.

    Hi,
    Dunno about your USB  .
If your CPU fan is making a noise then I would seriously consider changing it at your earliest opportunity! Also you say your CPU is running at 55°C this seems a little hot!

  • Wrong USB Speed

    Hi there,
I have E-MU 0202 and when I click on the [Control Panel] icon on the bottom right the "configuration center" appears. I can select the device, sample rate but that's not the point. It is written there "USB Speed : 1.1" while it should be 2.0, right? What should I do to change it?
Now I have Windows 7 but I don't remember how it was working on Vista or XP. Simply I didn't noticed that before, I think.
    Thanks for some answer!

Since you have switched from XP/Vista to W7, could it be possible that you need to install some "drivers" to get USB 2.0 mode available (drivers are bundled with motherboard or you can check from the support site for your motherboard)?
Also, is there an option for USB 2.0 support in system BIOS.

  • HT1349 very slow external HDD and usb drive connected to Apple Extreme Router

    Hello
So I got a western digital USB drive (500gig) and western digital Live 2TB.
I bought a new Apple Extreme router and connected them both.
USB drive and external hdd (WD Live 2TB) very slow when connected to Apple Extreme Router, using Lion 10.7 and updated both firmware for router, western digital and Airport Utility.
Slow means, it takes half an hour to copy 200 Mb of file to the WD Live 2TB, and its connected to my router with a gigabit ethernet cable!
Is someone else having the same problem, I thought even over usb I should get around 2-5mb range.
I am using Macbook Pro and 802.11n with Lion 10.7.2
    Please Help

The USB WD 500 gig is connected to the Airport Extreme using a non-powered USB 2.0 hub, only two things a HP printer and the 500 gig is connected through it. I already formatted it to MAC OS Extended Journalled. ANd I think the speed didnt change.
For the WD 2TB Live I didnt format it to anything, started using it out of the box. I just updated its firmware. I was having the same speed even when I directly connected it to my Mac Book Pro using ethernet gigabit cable.
This WD 2TB Live doesnt have any USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 connectors, just the ethernet cable. I wasnt planning to carry it around. Just wanted to use it as a good ol NAS. So then I saw the fix somewhere and connected to this drive via AFP,  afp://MyBookLive._afpovertcp._tcp.local/Public and it become suddenly very fast. Just like how it should be, I easily copied 20 gigs in around 20-25 minutes. (This was dirctly connected to my computer)
So then I thought my problem is solved and disconnected my WD Live and connected it back to the Apple Router again, and the speed became very slow again. Now both the USB 500 gig and this 2TB Live are slow.
Time machine is also very slow.
Thing is I also have a linux and windows machine(in repair, but should be up soon), Since apple is the newest computer I have, I want to make it work on this first. I dont want to use the MACosx journaled on the 2TB right now. Besides formatting the USB 500 gig to this format didnt help with my speed. So the problem can be elsewhere.
    - I will try to get a powered USB hub as woodmeister50 suggested.
    - I dont know how to connect via iCloud as cigame suggested
Please let me know if you guys have any suggestions. I have tested and returned enough routers in past few weeks. I really want it to work on this combination LionOSX + Airport Extreme + WD Live.
    Thanks

  • Tethering Question (Wifi, Bluetooth, and USB)

I have an iPhone 5 and am able to tether  my LTE/3G connection to other devices. When I enable tethering, devices can get connected via Wifi, Bluetooth, or USB. Let's say I use my MacBook Pro to connect to all of those at once (so now the MacBook Pro is connected to the internet via Wifi, Bluetooth, AND USB). Does it use one of them over the others or does it use all of them at once to provide the fastest speeds?

Does it use one of them over the others or does it use all of them at once to provide the fastest speeds?
As has been pointed out above the Internet connection is provided by the phone through the carrier so even if the Mac did connect using all three connections, USB, WiFi and Bluetooth they would all be combined into one connection once in the phone  and out to the net so there would be no speed advantage, the phine and internet connection would be the bottleneck.
In fact it is possible the speed would be lower as the phone would have to contend with the 3 connections into it.

  • USB speed help!

I have a macbook pro from late 2009. It has a 1.1 usb speed but I need a 2.0. Is there anyway to install an upgrade or get a plug-in host to get the 2.0 speed from my usb drive?

A Macbook Pro from 2009 should have full USB 2 support. USB 2 has been around since the early 2000s. I would think Apple is not that far behind the curve. And cetainly not with Lion 10.7.3 installed.
Something else is wrong. Like you have a USB 1.1 hub connected and your external is going through that.
The port you are using is bad.
The cable you are using is bad or very inferior and can not do USB 2.
