WRT610N: Port 113 refuses to be enabled

The checkbox in Security/Firewall refuses to become uncheckable.  What releases the lock on this checkbox?
Thanks...

  • Port 113

I just visited the Shields UP!! website (after seeing a demonstration at my local users group). The demonstrator's computer at the meeting passsed all the tests, but mine (at home) failed the "Solicited TCP Packets". It said that port 113 was in "closed" status not stealth. It said my computer has responded that this port exits by is currently closed to connections. Should I be concerned???? I am currently using a NetGear router with NAT.
Shields UP!! went on to say this:
New users of NAT routers, who use this site to check their security, are often disappointed to discover a single closed (blue) port floating in a calm sea of stealth green.
The good news is . . . it is possible to configure NAT routers to return them to full stealth. The trick is to use the router's own "port forwarding" configuration options to forward just port 113 into the wild blue yonder. Just tell the router to forward port 113 packets to a completely non-existent IP address, one way up at the end of your router's internal address range. The router will then NOT return a port closed status. It will simply forward the port 113 packet "nowhere" . . . and your network will be returned to full stealth status.
    Should I do this???
    Thanks,
    William

Personally, I wouldn't be concerned. The difference between "closed" and "stealth" is usually very small. A hacker would still have to use the correct password to get past the "closed" status of the port. If the port didn't respond at all, the hacker wouldn't even know that it was there. And that is just at the router. The hacker still has no idea what is behind the router. That is one of the benefits of NAT.
I'm not sure about the NetGear router's capabilities. Certainly you could set it up to use port forwarding for port 113. If you can make additional firewall rules you could place a rule that refused anything incoming on port 113. Another tactic would be to use Tiger's built in firewall and put it in stealth mode. It will not respond to any inquiries on port 113 or otherwise if a hacker does get past the router and somehow finds your computer and guesses it's password as well. Double the protection, double the fun.

  • Port 113 and shorewall

I did try to make port ident 113 stealth (now is closed) and in the /etc/shorewall/rule I added the line:
    DROP fw net tcp 113
but doesn't work. I scan ports on www.grc.com and port 113 is still "closed".
    Thanks in advance...

If you're behind a router, it's possible that the router is blocking 113. The packets never even get to your PC. Try poking around in your router configuration for any relevant settings.

  • WRT610N Port Forwarding Issues

Hello I am attempting to port forward the WRT610n however I am currently having no luck at all, here are the details of how the network is set up
It is a WRT610N model ver2.0 router with a Siemens Speedstream 4201 router (connected by full bridge mode via ethernet)
DHCP reservation is on (with the computer reserved to an IP I want to port forward to)
I have tried using DMZ as well as Port Range Forwarding, disabling/enabling UPNP, turning off home network defender, using QoS in various ways, SPI firewall being disabled/enabled, Filter Anonymous Internet Requests disabled
Is there anything else I can try (I am able to provide more details if necessary)
The error I am actually getting is "error: connection refused"

Both Internet IP address (under status page and What Is My IP are the same)
Since I am running linux, I will post my ifconfig

  • Linksys WRT610N Port Forwarding

I am finding it impossible to set up port forwarding. No matter what I do I remain completely stealthed when I do a port probe via www.grc.com. The only way I seem to be able to open a port is if I enable remote management. When I do that, whatever port I specifiy as the remote management port is then fully open. Obviously, I can't leave a port exposed like this and, anyway, I need to open multiple ports for my purposes.
Is there a bug? Can technical support please help?
Some background: I'm in the UK and I connect to the internet using the Fibre-to-the-cabinet (FTTC) technology. I have a BT supplied modem (Huawei Echolife HG612) which is completely locked (it is BT property) with no ability to log in and change settings. The WRT610N is plugged into the LAN socket of the modem and connects via PPPoE. Everything else works fine.

A firewall does not open or close a port. A firewall blocks or passes transient traffic. Thus if the port is closed on the computer it doesn't matter what the firewall does. The port will never show up as open as long as the port is not in use.

  • NI Application Web Server refuses to be enabled

I'm trying to deploy a web service made in LabVIEW 2010 and it fails to deploy saying that the NI Application Web service is not running....
So I connect to http://localhost:3580, login as Admin (blank password) and click the web servers page. There I set the port of the Application Web Server to 8080, click the enable checkbox...and hit the apply button - and the only thing that happens is that the browser shows the Error on page symbol in its status bar....There is no "Yes" showing next to the Enable checkbox like for the system web server...
So - if I start from scratch again and do the same, but also click the 32 bit radio button prior to hitting the apply button - what happens? Well, then I get an error dialog:
The service itself (32bit, the 64 bit is listed but not as started) is running according to the services control panel...
I'm stuck....So do anyone know what's missing here, is there something I'm doing wrong, or something that needs to be done prior to activating the application service?
    MTO
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Uninstalling and reinstalling 32 bit LabVIEW 2010 on two different machines revealed that the problem only showed up on my 64 bit Vista macine - not the 32 bit Windows 7 macine...
Looking at the services running on the machine with the problem I could see that it was running the 32 bit version of the Web application server, had a 64 bit installed but set to disabled....- but - only the latter was set to depend on the NI Web server service. This looked a bit strange as the 32 bit version on the 32 bit machine was dependant on the NI Web Server....
So - I disabled the 32 bit NI Web Application server service, enabled the 64 bit...and voila - I am now able to configure the Web Application Server to start.
So why is both the 32 and 64 bit Web application services installed, with only the 32 bit one running - but not properly? Is this what happens to everyone, but everyone fixes it by switching to the 64 bit version...or is there something that causes the installation to get messed up?

  • T400 - crappy USB ports and refusing to work with HP keyboards

    Hello forum,
I work in a large multinational company and all of our laptops are now IBM Thinkpads from T60's, T61's, and now of course they're Lenovo T400 and T410 laptops.
Also we still have some of the Thinkcentre towers.
There seems to be other people with the same problem where the weak plastic / incorrectly sized ports are causing problems.
Well i've just had my 4th Lenovo laptop cause problems and so far they've all be T400's or T410's with the exception of one Thinkcentre.
Each time there is a problem its because the crappy plastic they used to make the usb port pin protector has snapped off except in the case of the Thinkcentre PC.
The problem is that the vast majority of our keyboards are the basic HP keyboard and all of a sudden the keyboard stops working with the laptop.
The keyboard could be working fine for weeks months or days and then all three lights will light up at the same time on the keyboard (num lock, caps lock and scroll lock) and the keyboard will no longer function.
The only work around for the problem is to swap out the keyboard with an older Fujitsu Siemens Keyboard, or if i can find one an actual Lenovo keyboard.
Do some lenovo systems have an allergy to HP keyboards?
Or could someone tell me if theres a different cause for this problem.

which HP keyboards are you talking about? there are quite a few different model of HP keyboard used by businesses.
Also, is this problem caused by one keyboard or multiple HP keyboards?
Keyboards should be designed with interoperability, but sometimes a usb could be badly designed where it pinches the usb ports.

  • Server, Port details are revealed after enabling Mod Security

    Hi,
I have applied the mod security on the OAS to remediate the cross site scripting. With this fix the cross site scripting is remediated and prevent XSS attacks (HTML/Javascript injection). However on the browser with Show friendly error message unchecked the error page displays with server & its port information, whereas with checkbox checked error page 406 is displayed.
All i need is not to display the server and its port while showing the error page. Please suggest how i resolve this.
    Regards,
    R.Babu

    Hi,
This is what i have added in the httpd.conf when there is an error which will direct to 406 error page.
    SecFilterDefaultAction "deny,log,status:406"
I dont know how to create direct it to the one i define (can you help here). I believe even then with Show friendly HTTP error mesages unchecked i will not get my error page i defined.

  • Port refuses to go active on 5508

We are installing a new 5508 but the management port refuses to go active on the network. It's a new box and just has a base configuration which appears to be identical to a second new box which is working (other than name an IP address). The only difference between the two is the box that is not working uising a 1000BaseSX SFP and the one that is working is using a 1000BaseTX SFP. Looking at the other box through our WCS there is an option to set the physical mode to Full Duplex 1000sx Mbps or Full Duplex 1000 but via the CLI there don't seem to be any port level commands other than enable/disable. Any suggestions?

Found the issue. There was a faulty fibre in the cabinet.

  • Port forwarding 113

    Hi,
So Every time i port forward 113 when my power goes out sometimes my computer will change ip and i have to keep logging in and changing to ip the forwards 113, on my other routers belkin i was able to make it keep my computer always with the same ip, i cant figure out how to do this with this router and it says something about port 113 in the options i assumed it was so i could keep all ips open port 113 is there an way to do that? to make all ips connecting to the router have the port open?
one of the two would be very good to have either keep my pc with the same ip or have all pcs connecting open port 113.
    i have the
    Simultaneous Dual-Band Wireless-N Gigabit Router WRT610N router
    TIA
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The function you are looking for is called "DHCP Reservation" and is right there on the main setup page.
It's impossible to open a port for more then one LAN IP address. Multiple LAN IP addresses would make no sense. This would mix communication of all your computers on this port...

  • RV042 opens ports 80 and 443 when HTTPS enabled in firewall

I recently installed an RV042 v1.1 vpn router (older hardware revision but using the latest available firmware 1.3.12.19-tm) and set up VPN access with the QuickVPN client.  QuickVPN requires that the HTTPS setting be enabled under the Firewall options, so I did.  I then scanned our static IP with grc.com's ShieldsUP! to check for open or non-stealthed ports and discovered that ports 80 and 443 show as wide open, while port 113 is closed but not stealthed.  If I disable the HTTPS setting under Firewall, then ports 80 and 443 become stealthed.  Is there any way to use QuickVPN and keep these ports stealthed?
    Thank you!
    Tim

Solved this by forwarding ports 80, 113 and 443 to an unused internal IP address.  Tested QuickVPN after doing this and am still able to log on AND have a full stealth rating from ShieldsUP!

  • Can port 25 be used for SSL-enable SMTP server ?

    Hi,
Our customer is using port 25 for a SSL-enabled SMTP server without certificate. When our email client tried to connect to it, the following exception thrown:
DEBUG SMTP: exception reading response: javax.net.ssl.SSLException: Unrecognized SSL message, plaintext connection?
Since we don't want to ask our customer to change their port configuration unless absolutely necessary, we did some tests with our own SSL-enabled SMTP server that uses certificate. Here is what I got:
    1) with port 25, got the same exception as above;
    2) with port 465, worked fine;
    3) with any other randomly pick up valid port, worked fine.
This made me wonder if 25 is for non SSL SMTP server ONLY. By the way, I'm using Javamail 1.3.4 and JSDK 1.4.2_02. My question is whether we can configure javamail so that port 25 can be used by SSL-enabled SMTP server?
    Your help will be appreciated.

Yes, port 25 is intended for non-SSL servers only, although that doesn't
prevent a client from making a plain text connection and then using the
STARTTLS command to switch the connection to SSL/TLS. JavaMail 1.4
    supports that usage.
You can configure JavaMail to use port 25 for SSL connections if you
really want to. JavaMail 1.3.x requires you configure an appropriate
socket factory to get SSL connections; you can configure whatever port
you want for use with that socket factory.

  • Ports to open to enable connection between TVN staged env and SAP

    Hi,
What the ports to be opened to enable connection between SAP TVN stage environment and SAP ECC...

    Hi Abi,
I have implemented STVN products in 10 or 11 clients and have never had to do this. The SAP .NET connector (or SAP JCo for Java version) handles the connection between the STVN apps and the SAP system and no port is usually opened. The default port for the application, if you have not changed the IIS website, will be port 80.
    I hope that helps.
    Kind regards,
    Luke

  • Port Forwarding Question - Detailed

    Hi,
I hate wasting people's time, so I will give you very detailed information.
So here's an overview of the network. I have a WRT54G with V4.21 firmware on it. I also have a WRE54G Range Expander. Both are secured. We have 3 desktops, 2 laptops, and some game consoles hooked up to the wireless internet, with nothing connected with an ethernet cable (all wireless).
A friend and myself want to play an online game, which requires one person to be a server, and one to be a client. He doesn't have access to his network configurations, so I will end up being the server.
I have setup port forwarding, and the program gives me a Socket Error of 10061 - Connection was refused forcefully.
The port is 1001 that we need open.
I have checked with my ISP, and have found that they are not blocking any ports, so I know that is not an issue.
If I hook the computer up directly to the modem, it works fine, so it is definitely a forwarding issue.
I have DHCP turned off on the computer, my local IP address is 192.168.1.106
My port forwarding settings look like this.
Application: (Blank... but I have used other names during tests)
    Start: 1001
    End: 1001
Protocol: Both (I have also tried TCP and UDP individually)
IP Address: 192.168.1.106 (my static IP address)
    Enabled: True
I have also tried turning the SPI Firewall Protection off, as well as Block Anonymous Internet Requests.
The IP address that the person is using to connect to the computer with is my router's IP address (which is propagated directly from the modem). With the port 1001. This is the same combination used when the computer is hooked up directly to the modem, however with it behind the router, the forwarding just doesn't seem to handle the forward.
I have tried it with Windows Firewall turned off, as well as my Norton AV.
I have also created exceptions and completely opened port 1001 in Windows Firewall just in case.
I've also tried just simply restarting the computer.
I'm tapped out of ideas... can anyone else suggest anything?

Alright, I went through the checklist, and every single step in the checklist checked out, except for connecting from outside the LAN. I can connect to the server through 192.168.1.150:1001, but not through xxx.xxx.96.215:1001.
Here are all settings that have been changed (everything else should be assumed to be default values):
    Wireless/Security:
    Security Mode: WEP
    Default Transmit Key: 1
WEP Encryption: 128 bits 26 hex digits
    Passphrase: Have been set
    Key 1, 2, 3, 4: Have been set
