WRT610N Storage Share Problem

Hi,
I have plugged in a usb disk but cannot see the share on my network.
Also I cannot ping the Router by host name.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Nick

Perform a full reset on the router by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds.  Release for 10 seconds and power cycle the router.  Reconfigure the router and then download the manual here and follow the instructions for your USB device.

  • WRT610N storage server problems

We are attempting to use a Linksys WRT610N (firmware version 1.00.02 B10) as a network attached storage server on a Windows workgroup. There are two (2) Windows XP Professional workstations and one (1) Windows Vista workstation in the workgroup.
It required a chat session with Linksys technical support just to get the storage server feature to connect. The result was that we had to scale back the number of groups and the number of users, we had to flash the firmware (which we had just done prior to the chat with technical support) and reset the router to factory defaults, requiring a complete reconfiguration of everything from system passwords to wireless keys, etc.
After the chat session with technical support, we have only two (2) shares: “Default” and “employees”. We are using only two (2) groups: “admin” and “employees”. There are two (2) users in the admin group: “Bill” and “Debi” and only one (1) user in the employees group: “Mike”.
With this ‘scaled back’ configuration, the shared resource was available to be mapped under Windows. Each of the workstations in our workgroup reconnects to one of the shares at startup and maps it to a local drive letter. While each of the shares is set up to ‘reconnect at logon’ and ‘remember password’, we almost always have to log in to the share manually after starting up the PC.
The resultant mapped drive is incredibly unreliable and regularly completely unavailable. I have never known a networked resource to behave this unpredictably.
Often, one of us will open a folder, which we know contains numerous folders and files, only to find a subset of the actual contents or no contents whatsoever. They are there; apparently they are just not being displayed. This is evidenced by the fact that, sometimes, navigating up a level and back into the same folder, after a period of time, yields the entire folder’s contents.
Regularly, when attempting to access the ‘B:’ drive, we receive "'B:\' is not accessible, network access denied" or "The folder 'B:\' isn't accessible. The folder may be located in an unavailable location, etc."
At other times, we receive a wide variety of errors when attempting to access this share.
When navigating from the ‘B:’ drive, through two levels of folders, selecting a file and double-clicking same, Excel opens and reports "Could not open 'B:\...'"
When attempting a File->Open operation from within Excel, selecting the file, clicking ‘Open’ we receive the same result. Other times, Excel will report "Access denied, contact your administrator"
When attempting to save a file that has been successfully opened previously, sometimes we receive "Document not saved"
After navigating to an existing file spec., attempting to save over same, being prompted that the file already exists and asked if we want to replace the existing file, we respond ‘yes’ and sometimes receive "The system cannot find the file specified"
Often, waiting a few minutes will allow these problems to clear. In some cases, we are required to re-start the router in order to resolve the problems.
All of these errors are intermittent. If we had a reliable recreation scenario, we would open a problem ticket with technical support. However, these problems do seem to be happening more often as time goes on.
These interruptions are understandably frustrating but, more importantly, our staff is experiencing a significant productivity impact due to the periodic unavailability of our shared files. This impact is becoming a considerable cost to our operation. We are not making unreasonable demands upon this device. We simply want two levels of access to a shared drive for three individuals; this was an advertised feature that influenced our decision to purchase the device.
We have observed these same behaviors using our current drive (a two terabyte Western Digital USB external hard drive) and a sixty-four gigabyte Kingston Data Traveler DT150 pocket USB drive. Inspection of the .storage_info file showed that the firmware had been mismanaging the users and groups. There were remnants of previously removed groups and an instance of a duplicate group (this duplicate group could also be observed through the router’s administration menus). It required a flash of the firmware, a reset to defaults on the router and complete reconfiguration from scratch (with the simplest possible set of groups and users) just to be able to access the two shares.
Perusal of the various Internet forums leads me to believe that this feature was not ready for release in the WRT600N and has not been corrected in the WRT610N. We are obviously one of many customers experiencing similar problems with this aspect of the router. We are thus far very disappointed with this feature of the router and am seriously considering falling back to our previous scheme of shared files on one of the workgroup machines, which worked flawlessly. We would have liked to use the FTP server and external access functions but, as unreliable as the basic share features have been, we dare not even attempt to configure these more advanced features.
In the past, I have associated a certain level of quality and reliability with the Cisco name, however, it troubles me that they have placed their name on this product, if only through the acquisition of Linksys.
At this point, unless someone can offer some miraculous suggestion, I believe we are going to be forced to purchase some other device to meet our requirements. This device came highly recommended by CNET.com (and still does); I will also feel compelled to log onto their site and write a less than favorable review of the device.
    Please advise.

Thanks for your suggestion but there are no floppy drives in any of these systems so both 'A' and 'B' appear in the list of available drive letters to be mapped, we have tried a variety of drive letters with the same result (the 'B:' references were just for the sake of examples in the write-up) and we have tried it without any mapped drive letter with the same unreliable results.
Further, I purchased an actual NAS from Western Digital yesterday, installed it and mapped it as the 'B:' drive on all three systems and it works flawlessly, as it should
After telling me to e-mail '[email protected]' and having that address respond to contact: '[email protected]', they responded that Linksys technical support is eliminating e-mail technical support. So, they did not even read the MS-Word document I had created with snapshots of the various error dialogs. Since the problem is intermittent, there is no point to phone or live chat support as it will result in: "well, it seems to work now" and most likely another waste of my time re-flashing the firmware, resetting to factory defaults and completely reconfiguring.
This device DOES NOT do what it claims to. I have wasted far too many hours on what is apparently a terrible firmware release that they do not intend to correct. Our technical support experience has been unacceptable, our new solution works great (thank you, Western Digital) and we will not be purchasing from Linksys again in the future.

  • WRT610N storage problem

    hi support,
i have an external drive that is connected via usb to my WRT610N router. whenever i access the storage page in my IE 9 browser, i got a blank page and i can no longer connect to my router. i need to power it down to be able to reconnect.
if i access the page without my drive connected, i can access it but there is no option to create a share. i remember some time in the past, i have deleted the default share and now i'm not able to create a new one. i decided to delete the share because it was not a the root of the external drive.
i'm using windows 7 64 bits, with latest firmware installed.
how can i fix this issue and share my external drive?
    thank you!

The USB port on the router can be used to connect an external USB hard drive or flash disk. Computers that are connected to the network will be able to access the Shared Drive if they have login credentials such as admin or guest.
NOTE: Before connecting your external USB hard disk to the router’s USB port, make sure your hard disk is already formatted in either NTFS or FAT32 file system using your computer to avoid any difficulties.

  • WRT610N vs Share Mapping Wirelessly

WOW.  Never thought itwould come to this, but I am slowly realizing how aerodynamic the LinksysWRT610N is.  I am also getting closer totesting its ability to fly.
I bought this router, after some careful deliberation.  I stated that a USB hard drive could beplugged directly in making a storage device available via the router.  Great I thought, “this means I can sharefiles on my network without having a computer constantly on.”
I purchased the WRT60N and a WD MyBook 1TB USB external harddrive.  Got it home set it up and loggedin to the IP of the router.  I did allthe usual security setups, and then proceeded to the storage tab.  There was my hard drive…all of it.  Problem was I could not access it to makeshare folders.  I did some digging onthese forums, and on the Linksys KB, and discovered that the firmware doesn’tsupport anything over 750gb.  I havefiles lager than 4gb that I want to put on here, so while I was at it I madethe drive NTFS.
I reconnected the drive to the router, and viola the abilityto make shares.  This is where theproblem, and frustrations comes in. While I can create shares, and map them while connected through LAN, Ihave yet to map one share wirelessly.  Ihave changed the Media Server name, enabled UPnP, changed the ftp server name, changed the workgroup name, forwarded ports from the router to my laptop, anything I could think of to find the **bleep** shares on my network.
I have tried the \\192.168.... Method that only brings me tothe router setup page (no help there).
I have tried \\servername (both media, and ftp) nothing
I have tried creating a workgroup on my laptop with thestock and the changed workgroup names…nothing
I have upgraded firmware, downgraded firmware, even loaded opensourcefirmware (dd-WRT).
I can’t seem to figure this out.  While I was wired to the router I was able tomap the shares, but wirelessly…I should also point out that I am runningWindows XP Pro SP3, and am not a novice to this type of thing.
After this I am going to have to tackle the Twonky Media server issue.

    Hey Avatar,
Thanks for resurrecting this for me...I had pretty much written it off...I spoke with at level 3 Tech support on the chat system.  Basically we figured that there are two Versions for this Router.  The Ver 1 uses similar chip/code architecture  as the WRT600N.  The 600n only supports up to 750G, and I've read elsewhere that it was a real pain in the...

I took it back to BB for an "exchange" and got the Ver. 2 (identifiable by the new packaging).  Got home, set-up, works a charm now.  I am currently downloading my Torrents to it directly...(edit 11/10: Having issue with MS SP3 and concurrent half-open outbound TCP connections)
Remember when you  set-up you have to enable the media server, and create a share...I just share the whole drive. Hope this helps...

  • WRT610N storage link user/group creation

I just got the WRT610N and I really like it so far, I'm playing with the NAS option and I can't get it to create any new users or groups. I click on the link, fill out the form and click on 'modify user' (The set-up guide has a button there for 'save settings') and nothing gets created. I tried this several times and there are no new groups or users. I checked the storage.info file and there is no additional users or groups there either. I think I can edit that file but I'm not too sure what these last 2 lines mean
    nas_login@admin:admin:admin: off guest:guest:guest: on
    users_content@admin:admin:admin:admin: off guest:guest:guest:guest: on
I figure the admin: off is also the reason I can't login as admin which is a real pain if I want to upload new data to the share...Anyone out there seen this or can help? I'm running firmware 1.00.00 B18

I highly doubted a complete reconfigure would correct a faulty GUI/option. I considered it as a last resort, but I got this working without doing so.
    Here's what I did -
Edited the last 2 lines of the .storage_info like this.
    nas_login@admin:admin:admin: on guest:guest:guest: off admin:user:admin: on user:welcome:admin: on
    users_content@admin:admin:admin:admin: on guest:guest:guest:guest: off user:welcome:admin: on
I didn't think it would work, it was just a shot in the dark. I was using a 2gb thumb drive and clicking on the remove safely each time I removed it from the router. After I changed the config, I plugged it back in and it showed up as connected, but I couldn't connect to it from Windows Vista, XP, or OS X. I unplugged the router and the cable modem and let it sit unplugged over night. Plugged it back in the next day and pushed the thumb drive back in. It showed up and looked good. There was no user called user, but there was 2 admins. I logged into the GUI this time using IE (I used Firefox on all the OS before). On the admin tab I clicked on the Create User and it actually came up with a Create User button (before it was Modify User). I added a few more users and a few groups so I could compare that to the original .storage_info. It saved and wrote to the file, but I still couldn't connect over the LAN. I unplugged it again overnight, deleted the .storage_info, and the public folder the router creates, and tried it the next day. Everything was working as it is supposed to. I plugged in a WD 500gb drive and the router found it, but there was no option to share a folder. I could still add users though. Unplugged the router for another night and tried it again. It's working now as I expected. I'm not sure if it was the config change, the overnight unplugs, or using IE (Firefox works now too), but it is working. Now if I could only get all the folder permissions to match....

  • E4200- Can't create a storage share

I've been trying to set up a shared drive.  I can see USB hard drive on my network and I can see it from my laptop.  Everytime I create a share through the router I am logged out of the router and I get an error that says "Session Failure" Has anyone else experienced this problem or found a solution?

Hi duaroger. Are you doing it wired to the computer? I suggest doing a reset and then reconfigure the router. Here are some links that might help:

  • Wireless WRT610N Storage Question - Formats

I just bought the WRT610N router. I have no connection issues what so ever. Everythings been beautiful since startup. The real question is the USB storage option. I have a MyBook 500GB USB drive. It is formatted for the Mac OSX operating system. Is there some reason why the router does not understand this Format? Must i format it to FAT in order to utilize the networking storage option? Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

It has a problem recognizing formats other than FAT. Which also means you will have a hard (impossible) time storing a file that exceeds 4GB on the attached drive. It will also be incompatible with many backup programs. Hope you didn't really want to use the attached drive for much...
On the WRT600N it will only use FAT, FAT32, or NTFS. However, the FAT32 and NTFS partitions wouldn't function very well. I have heard that the kernel is Linux-based, and if you are familiar with Linux you can bypass some of these issues by using a Linux format.

  • WRT610N Storage Link

I have connected a 500GB external WD "My Drive" hard disk to my WRT610N wireless router.  My intent is to be able to periodically back up three computers, all linked wirelessly to the WRT610N onto this hard disk.  The disk is recognized by the router, but the directions on how to set up the shares are Greek to me.  Once set up, can these back-ups run automatically in the background at specific times or does one have to initiate the back-up?
Has anyone set up a similar configuration with the storage link and if so, how did you go about doing it?
    Thanks,
    Doug

To create a share, go to the UI of the wrt610n and click on Storage tab. Click on Create Share.  Assign permission to the Group that you want to grant access. I believe you need to manually create back-up.

  • AutoFS + Samba share problems when share not online (especially in itunes)

I'm trying to look into having some or all of my media on a server for a couple of my macs, the main one of interest right now being a mac mini working as a HTPC under a tv, being operated 99% of the time with just the apple remote and frontrow.
A friend informed me that if you have your itunes library not managed and add files from a remote share then everything works pretty well. Namely if you try to play a file it will seemingly automount the remote file and start it playing. If the remote server is not available it will quickly discover this and after a short pause start giving explanation marks next to the broken tracks. Get the remote destination connected and then try to play a broken track and it will successfully mount the track and play.
    Basically perfect.
I quickly tried accessing these files via a symbolic link or alias to them on the remote drive, in doing this i can be somewhat insulated from problems of trying to move the library to other machines/shares in the future. This all works fine but you do lose the ability for itunes to automatically mount the remote drive, which is a bit of a step back, but not a big deal on my normal machine. On my HTPC machine however i'd really like front row to be able to just work, hence automatically mounting the server as required.
The only problem was that when i tried with files directly added to the itunes library from a remote location frontrow would NOT automount the tracks/videos when you attempted to play them like itunes would do.
I've just spent the last few hours following the advice here
    http://rajeev.name/blog/2007/11/22/autofs-goodness-in-apples-leopard-105-part-i/
to setup autofs in the hope that this would let me get auto mounting working as it does with itunes and directly added to the library remote files.
I boiled this down to the following settings
    as root
    vi /etc/auto_master
    and add
    /smb auto_smb
then create this new config file
    vi /etc/auto_smb
    and add
    <Mount dir under /smb folder> -fstype=smbfs ://<share user>:<share pass>@<ip address>/<share point>
    ie.
    testMount -fstype=smbfs ://netuser:[email protected]/remoteMount
finally tell automount to throw away its cache
    automount -vc
then the mount should be setup
    df -h
    shows the indirect map waiting
    map auto_smb 0Bi 0Bi 0Bi 100% /smb
    and by triggering it
    ls /smb/testMount
you should connect and get a listing, a subsequent df shows
    df -h
    //[email protected]/Media 466Gi 325Gi 141Gi 70% /smb/Media
Everything worked well with the share getting mounted nicely when present, frontrow could just start playing the files it needed, perfect!!
The problem came when i wanted to simulate the media server being offline, basically frontrow, a lot of the system including finder, cd commands attempting to access the share, and itunes if you tried that would all freeze for long periods of time as they tried their best to get the files they were looking for.
I tried looking into getting this to gracefully time out and think i got somewhere by trying to setup the samba share to be soft linked.. I wasn't sure in what files i could add this to, first attempts didn't seem to do anything but adding this seemed to make a difference
    /etc/nsmb.conf
    containing something like
    #Configuration file for example.com
    [default]
    minauth=ntlmv2
    streams=yes
    soft=yes
to turn soft samba shares on. Things like cd in a terminal seemed to behave quite well with this, when no remote share present you would get empty folders and the like. Finder would also seem to be reasonable with it.
Frustratingly itunes and frontrow both still have quite massive pauses even when finder and cds in the background show that perhaps the soft links are working and failing like they should.
I'm now left wondering what i can do to fix it, and resorting to perhaps having the files added via a symbolic link, using the login items to launch the remote share every boot and then having it so that all i need to do is reboot the HTPC mac mini if the server is on for it to pick it up and let me play the files. Otherwise they'll just be unavailable and will fail gracefully without locking up itunes. The perfect solution would be to either have a crontab running, or some applescript bound somehow to whenever frontrow is ran which manually tries to tell finder to do the equivelant mount the login items setup does.
It's frustrating though as its so close, and the autofs solution if it did work better would seem to be the perfect solution. Has anyone dabbled with this and got any suggestions as to options you can setup to make things not go horribly wrong when a remote share is NOT present, preferrably within the context of itunes or front row not complaining, but to be honest any suggestions i'll be able to try out myself.
Sorry i've written so much, perhaps some of it will be helpful reference as it took me a while to decipher that link at the top into just setting up a samba autofs.
    Cheers.

It seems like it's not only the ArchLinux workstation that displays the norwegian letters wrong. The only machine that shows this correc is the machine that created the file/catalogue.
It seems like the windows 2000 displays the cataloge created by windows XP just fine.

  • Storage Capacity Problem - Macbook Air 11.6"

I got this MBAir last December, and sometime last month had a complete crash... why, because I was forced to terminate a certain application, everything frozen, and I force off (holding power button for 5 seconds)
    History:
    1. I installed a new partition for XP, not via bootcamp because I was having problem acquiring the drivers, size is 9G.
    2. 128G as I remember shows as my storage capacity (or if not, it could be only minus 1-2G)
    3. I realized, I don't need the XP at all, so I decided to have it deleted, but I could not delete it via Disk Utility so I left the app (Disk U) running at the background, and did something else.
    4. Frozen... force restart.
    5. Start up disk (both Mac and PC) could not be detected.
    6. I inserted the flash drive startup disk, and performed the Disk Utility VERIFY AND REPAIR, but not successful.
    7. Ran REFORMAT and REPARTITION.
Now I only have one partition, restored my Time Machine Backup, and everything was restored back, but I noticed huge amount of storage space missing. About 9 G.
Can someone help me with this please??
By the way, I now run Leopard 10.6.4, and still running the update (download) of the 1.06G file size... it takes days before completion with my current Satellite Internet connection.

Now, you can. Your SSD has a capacity of 128,000,000,000 bytes (this is the method device manufacturer's use. You will find this noted in the footnote on the MBA's specs: +1GB=1 billion bytes; actual formatted capacity may be less+.) If you divide the above by 1024^3 it will equal 119.21 GBs or 120,000,000,000 bytes, approximately. Hence what appears to be a loss of storage space. In actuality the two are the same. One computed using Base 10 and the other using Base 2 arithmetic.
You can approximate the difference on any drive by deducting about 7% from the manufacturer's stated capacity. For a 128 GB drive that is about 8.96 GBs - your missing 9 GBs.)

  • USB Mass Storage device problem

Hello, I cant use my USB mass storage device in my computer, it is a SanDisk ImageMate CF/SM unit, which works perfectly in every other computer I have tried it, but in this one it hangs while accessing the device, and in linux, it hangs while mounting it (the same thing).
I dont know what might the problem be but some other people have seen the same problem, perhaps someone here can help me.

Yeah, I though so, but first I wanted to know what might be causing this incompatibility, in the linux posts people have said that it is a nForce2 generic problem, perhaps a big nvidia bug? heh

  • Network shares can't be ejected? ("Ghost" share problems)

This topic is to try to solve a problem I'm having, as well as many of my Mac friends, when they use a network share, and it then cannot be unmounted.
Basically, there are servers no longer accessible, because we switched LANs, etc.
Symptoms: in the Finder, clicking on the "Eject" button next to the computer's name gives out a dialog telling "A disk on <share name> is in use. Try close applications. (approximately).
Of course, closing all applications doesn't have any effect, neither does relaunching the Finder.
In the Terminal, the command "mount" displays, among others:
//GUEST:@ines:139/Shared Docs em Vaio1 on /Volumes/Shared Docs em Vaio1 (smbfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by xxx)
//GUEST@ines:139/Download on /Volumes/Download (smbfs, nodev, nosuid, mounted by xxx)
I tried umount "Shared Docs em Vaio1", as well as the other share, and yet it outputs "not currently mounted"
I then did lsof to check what files were open on these share, and the output starts with lsof: WARNING: can't stat() smbfs file system /Volumes/Shared Docs em Vaio1
    Output information may be incomplete.
    assuming "dev=2d000004" from mount table
lsof: WARNING: can't stat() smbfs file system /Volumes/Download
    Output information may be incomplete.
    assuming "dev=2d000005" from mount table
I've reached the end of my meager knowledge on this issue, which is minor (in the sense that performance is not affected), but relatively present nevertheless.
Of course it goes off when rebooting, but I want to be able to solve this problem without a reboot, so how can it be?

I don't know if it is the same with SMB shares, but with AFP ones I sometimes get this message when the share point is on my MacBook & it goes to sleep. The 'solution' -- such as it is -- is just to wait for the client Mac to notice the server isn't responding & pop up a server disconnect notice on the screen. Once you click the 'ok' button in that notice, the share point disappears from the Finder & no more messages about something on it being in use appear.
This notice can take several minutes to appear. I don't know of any way to speed up the process, or if it would be wise to try. I assume the long timeout is so that brief network outages are not problematic.

  • SMB Share Problem

I have Windows Server 2003 with a couple SMB shares setup. My problem is that on my schools network I am able to connect no problem to the server when in my Dorm building. However when I go to a different building finder says "The server may not exist...Check the server name or ip address..." I am trying to connect using the Servers IP Address, I have also tried using DNS name and that doesnt work either. The catch is that when I am running Vista through Boot Camp I am able to connect no problem to the SMB Shares using the IP address, so Im curious as to whats different within the two OS's that one can connect and the other cannot.
All connections are Wired, the server is not behind a router within my room.
In finders connect to server i am enter smb://<ip address>

My question is why for new WM in system trace just show that was processed the LT12 and not the MB1B?
There was something I missed in configuration? or there is a user exit that perform that and needs to be updated to consider the new WM also? why existing WM calls MB1B internally and new WM not?

  • [solved] USB storage devices problem

Hello everyone. I have MSI Wind U270 and recently I've moved from Ubuntu 11.04 to Arch. I really like Arch so far but I have one quite big problem and I can't find any solution, so I hope someone here could help me.
After I'd installed Arch, I tried to copy some file from/to USB flash drive. After just few seconds, transfer failed with information about I/O errors and USB flash drive disappeared along with any other USB drives connected at the same time but logitech usb mouse and keyboard continue to work.
My first thought was that it's simply broken USB drive, but same thing was happening also when I tried to move some files from/to any other USB storage device that I have.
Here is sample dmesg output after I connect device:

Next I thought – computer is broken. But it simply couldn't be true because in Ubuntu it's working.
I wanted to test if USB transfer is working in other distros, so I downloaded few and tried:
Ubuntu 11.04 – everything is working
Ubuntu 11.10 – it's not working, exactly same errors as in Arch
    Ubuntu 12.04 Alpha 2 – it's not working
    Mint 11 – it's working
    Mint 12 – it's not working
So one thing in common that I can think of is fact that USB transfer is working in distros using kernel <3.0 and is broken in those using kernel >=3.0.
In dmesg output I can see ehci_hcd errors. When I remove this module before moving files, than everything is working fine apart from very slow transfer but it's obvious.
I really hope that someone will be able to help with my problem.  I don't know if it's some bug or it's just some configuration error.
EDIT: problems were caused by rts5139 module (card reader). Blacklisting that module solved all the problems.
