WRT610N usb ioSafe Solo 1TB

WRT610N ver 1 (Firmware Ver: 1.00.03 B15) via USB port to ioSafe Solo 1TB external (NTFS) hard drive.
According to ioSafe's FAQ under "Converting the ioSafe Solo to a NAS", the "Linksys WRT610N is the best bet for Windows systems as it will read and write to an NTFS or FAT32 formatted drive. We recommend this for Windows networks."
http://www.iosafe.com/faq-solo
Yet for the life of me I seem to have wasted an entire day trying to make my Vista laptop "see" the ioSafe on my wired LAN (wireless is off).
I have followed the Vista instructions under the User Guide Appendix B to a "T".  I have tried every recommendation I can find here and elsewhere and am at my wits end.
Would someone, anyone be so kind as to hold my hand to make sure I am doing all of this correctly.
The most confusing step in my mind is the "shares" and how to properly configure it.
I only wish to access the ioSafe HD from a Vista laptop on my local wired LAN (no FTP from the internet) to store archival files of personal photos and videos.  It will not be used with a media server but simply as a safe place to store irreplacable files.

Solved!
Go to Solution.

To access your USB Drive on your Vista computer, first thing which you need to do is, enable the Network Discovery Service on your vista computer. Click on Start - Control Pannel - Network and Sharing Center - and under this window first enable the "Network Discovery" Option....
Now on your vista computer click on Start - RUN - and type "\\192.168.1.1" (Without quotes) and hit enter, and it should prompt you for the Usernamd and Password, in the Usernamd and Password use "admin" all in lower cae and click Ok...Now you should be able to see your USB Drive... You need to right click on it and select "Map Network Drive" and check the box Enable and below click on Finish... This will Map the USB Drive on your Vista computer... Once done you will be able to Send and Receive the data from your Computer to the USB Drive...

What is the best USB powered portable 1TB hard drive for a macbook pro that allows Time machine to work, windows (thru Parallels software) and mac storage and is available in Australia?

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive.  But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

  • Windows XP and Windows 7 cannot see my WRT610N USB Drive

I have the WRT610N V2 router with current firmware.  I have tried a thumb drive and an IOMEGA 1tb drive.  In both cases the router sees the drive, allows me to create partitions, groups, and users but the computers in my home cannot see the drive.  I tried the Network wizard and explorer drive map option.  I even tried start/run typing wrt610n or \\wrt610n and I get network path cannot be found.  I have three computers in the house, one (XP) with Norton 360, one (XP) with SOFOS and one with no AV sw at all (Win7).  None of these can see the network path.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks
    Dan

To map the drive on your computer click on Start - RUN - type "\\192.168.1.1" and click ok... When prompted for Username and Password type "admin" and click ok... Now you will be able to see the folder which you have shared on  your router, right click on it and select "Map network drive" and click on finish.
Now it will map the drive on your computer and you should be able to transfer the file from your computer to the USB drive.

  • WRT610N usb disk upgrade *#

I have a version 2 WRT610N dual band wireless/GB router. It has worked great.  I use it as one of two backup drives for all of my home computers.  The other drive is an IOMEGA 2TB network drive.   BTW, it was just this week that I figured out how to get HD sony video etc. streaming without stutter, but that is another topic.  I want to upgrade the drive to a 1TB and faster drive.  My old drive is a lenovo/fujitsu 500GB 5400 RPM drive. It works great, but it is slower and I need more space.  So the problem becomes a series of - buy new drive, format it, put in router, router doesn't recognize it.  I tried this many times of the year and gave up.  Yesterday I got a new Seagate 500GB 7200 RPM drive. I figured I would try it again and mistakenly backed up 400GB of data to it first (wasting time) only to have the router's web page 'can't recognize usb device.'   Arghh. I have the latest firmware also.   After searching, I can't find a list of supported drives.  I can't keep going to the store and returning drives.   I am on support now with linksys, on second person, on second 5 minute hold.   I was just told that 'just to set expectations, you no longer have warranty support.'   So now I am on hold again.  I only want a list of drives that will work so I don't waste time and gasoline.   I am wondering if I should consider upgrading routers completely, but that seems to be a waste also since the rest of the functions in the WRT610N work great.

I tried the KB site of Cisco and I found the list. Here's the link: List of Compatible HD and USB disk for WRT610Nv2.

  • WRT610N USB HD timeouts.

Hi I just bought a wrt610n and config everything for it. I plug a Maxtor 1TB HD in the USB for FTP/Media Services. Well I have all that working but after its left sitting idle for sometime the WRT610N drops the connection to the USB. Is this a common issue or is their a work around? Yes I have the latest firmware don the router.

As you have already tired installing the Firmware on your Router, and it didn't work when you connect your 1TB drive to your router, Basicaly the 1 TB drive will only work when formatted to NTFS File System, else it won't work...
What is the File System on your Hard Drive ?

  • Linksys WRT610N - USB port - possibilities ??

    Hello
    1. What is the transfer from the USB drive connected to the router to a computer in LAN network? maximum as for possible USB connection? The Gigabit should allow it.
    2. Can I expect with new firmware that it will be possbile connect a 3G modem to the USB port a have this way internet access ??? This kind of solution is available in Edimax 3G-6200n router.

If i understand you correctly , you want to share the data of USB drive with other computers in your LAN network.
You will have to map the network drive with the computer connected to it.After mapping you can share the different computer.
When to mapped the drive there is a option you have to check Reconnect while log on please click here and follow step to Map Drive.
The USB port on WRT610N wireless router doesnot support modem connection.

  • WRT610N USB port problem

Hi all , im new to 610N.
Can we use the USB port with our printers ? since i plugged the printer but i cant access to it. Or the USB only works for storage drives ?

No,you can not use the printer to the USB port of the WRT610N router. It is only for the HDD.

  • WRT610N USB port locks up during file copy

Brand new wrt610n works like a charm except for the USB port.  We bought the router specifically for that feature and we got a small USB drive to attach to it.  Problem is, when backing up a workstation using just file copy of no more than 5G of data, the USB port hangs up.  Can't get to it via the management we interface storage tab.  The rest of the router continues to function properly.  The USB light stays on.  Disconnecting the drive from the router and reconnecting causes the USB light to go off but it doesn't come back on.  A router reset corrects the locked USB port.  The drive functions properly connected to a workstation or our DVR.
Is this broken hardware or broken software?

Checked the firmware for updates but nothing on this problem.  The drive is a WD 750g USB 2.0.  Tech support wants me to reflash the router just incase the firmware was corrupted.
If that doesn't work, I suppose I could reformat the drive with the Linksys router management software.  I didn't have to do that because it recognized the drive right out of the box as FAT2.  This drive works fine attached to one fo the PCs.

  • WRT610N USB Drive File Format

What USB file formats will the WRT610Nv2 support NTFS and or FAT/FAT32?
Is there a Drive Size Limitation for the USB, like 1.5 drive?

Router with Storage Link only supports FAT32  file system formatted USB storage while USB storage formatted with other file system will not be detected when plugged into the router.
Check this link of compatible HDD for WRT610N.

  • WRT610n USB Access

    Hi.
I just installed a LinkSYS WRT610N and it works very well on my DELL desktop running Windows 7 Ultimate. I didn’t bother with LELA, though I may try it later.
I installed firmware 1.00.03 B15 using the router itself.
I plugged in a 1gb USB flash drive, and I cannot seem to access it.
I let the WRT610N Format Disk, and then created a share partition called linksysusb. Under that there is a /public directory. The admin has read and write privileges for /public.
Under the Media Server tab, I have UpnP Media Serve Disabled, and NO Auto Scan.
Under the FTP Server tab, I have FTP Server and Internet Access disabled. The Server Name is WRT610N and the Workgroup Name is linksys.
(I have tried this with and wihout ZoneAlarm up.)
What have I done wrong, and what would I have to do on my DELL to be able to see a file called /public on the router’s USB? Would I see /public in Explorer?
    Thanks,
    MG...

Hi. Just to be sure we are on the same page:
Using Windows Explorer, I right click on "Network", then I select "Map A Network Drive", then I enter "\\192.168.1.1\linksysusb" in response to "What Network Folder Would You Like To Map". This is where I get the "Enter Network Password to connect to 192.168.1.1" message box. This is where I'm stuck.
Your last post says "Open the router setup page as you can and create a new user and password for the storage.." Is this implying that the WRT610N requires a special password for the USB storage above and beyond the "admin" password? I cannot find where to enter a specific Password for the USB storage.
Perhaps I'm missing something that is obvious. Do I have to set up a Workgroup? Will it require a Password, and is this possibly the "Network Password" in question?
Yikes, I seem to be going nowhere. Thanks for your patience. Every bit of advice helps.

  • Question about Formatting Buffalo USB 1TB external drive for use with Mac Book Pro Mountain Lion HD

Hi there, Have Mountain Lion HD operating system (not sure if it is 10.8 or 10.8.1. or 10.8.2)  and have a Buffalo USB 3.0 1TB hard drive. When go to utilities to try and format with Mac OS extended, following 3 files show. DriveNavi. exe, Slm.exe and Mac. The option to left click and erase menu is not there. Or at least not as shown in all the help videos.
It is USB connection so will take ages but want to use drive to store video footage and also partition to back up Time Machine. ( travelling in South America and no other Ext Drive option available too buy) how much space should i assign to Time Machine when partitioning?  Is there anything else i need to think about? as new to formatting. Any thing else i can do to make process of transfering footage to Buffalo quicker?
Final question is if it is finally reformatted am i going to have to spend so long accessing footage from hard drive when back home and editing that it really is not worth if, and i should just write this off as an inappropriate purchase, and try and buy more memory cards and not bother with transfering/storing? Thanks in advance for time spent trying to assist.

Use Apple's Disk Utility in the Applications/Utilities folder to format the drive.
The programs on the drive given to you by the manufacturer is likely backup software (or malware) and essentially worthless, it will be wiped when you format the drive.
I do NOT advise you partition that drive for TimeMachine, rather I advise you not to use TimeMachine at all for your purposes because TM is just a backup, not a bootable drive.
    Rather do this.
Get another hard drive that is equal to or slightly larger than your boot drive.
Format the drive in Disk Utiltiy > 1 Partition, option: GUID, Format: OS X Extended journaled, click Erase and move the slider one spot to the right and click Erase. This will take some time as it's going to map off any failing sectors it can BEFORE you lay data on the drive corrupting it.
Next, pay for and download Carbon Copy Cloner, use the default settings and simply clone internal drive to the external drive. this will also take some time the first time.
Next use Disk Utility to Repair Permisisons on both drive. Now reboot the machine and hold the option key down, you can select the external drive clone to boot from!!
You can update the clone the same way by using CCC, but it doesn't take as long, only copying changes.
This is better than TimeMachine as a bootable clone is bootable in case your internal drive fails to boot the machine.
Use the first drive for storage and be very gentle with it while it running, like you should do for all hard drives as they are subjective to shock damage.
The objective with the clone drive is you keep it safe, and not carting it around where it can be more subjective to damage like the other drive will be.
Remmeber you need 2 forms of hardware backup at all times.

  • WRT610N with HD on USB port + WD TV Live on the network

    Hi,
from the WD TV Live I can share everything and I can see it from the net. I can see the HD on WRT610N USB port from WD TV live but I cannot get in, I cannot see folders. What is more, no access User name and PSW is required when I try to get in the HD media server, no access data required.
    Anty help ? Thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Sorry for the banal question, I sorted out. Reading the manual I found out that Auto login option in the WD setting panel was to be disable: that option is to access to the net devices requiring PSW and Username and not to protect the WD access through the LAN. Disabling the Auto Login, my Media Server asks me PSW and Username to access and, once given, I could browse from the WD to the Router HD (pluggeg to USB slot of the WRT610N).
    Bye

  • Access external hard drive connected to Airport Extreme USB via Windows & Mac

I have an Airport Extreme and I would like to connect an external hard drive to it via USB so that I can backup pictures, music, documents etc. I need to be able to see the external hard drive from my windows PC. I eventually will be buying a Mac so I would like to be able to also get to my pictures and documents via the MAC as well.
I currenlty have an iPhone, iPad and Apple TV so getting to the external drive from these devices would be a huge bonus also if that is possible.
I recently bought an ioSafe Solo External Hard Drive and I had to return it because it was only formatted for the PC. When I plugged it into my Airport Extreme, I could see the drive via the Airport Disk Utility but I could not see it from my PC and I could not map a drive to it. When I contacted ioSafe support, they said that what I was trying to do was not possible since I did not have a MAC available to me to reformat the drive.
I hope that I am not trying to accomplish the impossible because I will always need to live in a MAC/PC world.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time!

You must know people with Macs.. it is 2min work to plug a USB drive into a Mac Laptop and format it Mac OS extended with a quick format.. And that is better IMHO than buying a utility or buying a pre-formatted drive which are often more expensive for no very good or obvious reason.
Another option is a Linux boot disk.. Linux distributions have very similar command line tools to the Mac OS. (some are identical) and HFS+ has been available for ages in Linux.

  • WRT610N UPnP Media Server failing after minutes online

    Hi,
I have a WRT610N and I'm having issues with the media server. I have upgraded to the latest firmware and setup sharing and UPnP etc. When I initially plug in my USB hard drive (1TB Seagate Freeagent) it is discoverable by devices on my network (Xbox 306 & Linksys Kiss1600) and I can browse shared media it has indexed. This only lasts for less than 5 mintues, then the WRT610N dissappears from both devices (Xbox & K1600) and I can no longer use the media server.
Disk sharing still works OK, it's only the media server that fails.
Any help would be really appreciated as I'm about to launch it out the window.
    Thanks,
    James

Are your devices connected to the media server via a cabled or wireless connection ?
If its wireless - then i suspect you have a faulty WRT610, the wireless chipsets inside the WRT610N are well known for overheating and dropping all connections.
Should be pretty stable using a cabled connection though.
