WRT610N vs Share Mapping Wirelessly

WOW.  Never thought itwould come to this, but I am slowly realizing how aerodynamic the LinksysWRT610N is.  I am also getting closer totesting its ability to fly.
I bought this router, after some careful deliberation.  I stated that a USB hard drive could beplugged directly in making a storage device available via the router.  Great I thought, “this means I can sharefiles on my network without having a computer constantly on.”
I purchased the WRT60N and a WD MyBook 1TB USB external harddrive.  Got it home set it up and loggedin to the IP of the router.  I did allthe usual security setups, and then proceeded to the storage tab.  There was my hard drive…all of it.  Problem was I could not access it to makeshare folders.  I did some digging onthese forums, and on the Linksys KB, and discovered that the firmware doesn’tsupport anything over 750gb.  I havefiles lager than 4gb that I want to put on here, so while I was at it I madethe drive NTFS.
I reconnected the drive to the router, and viola the abilityto make shares.  This is where theproblem, and frustrations comes in. While I can create shares, and map them while connected through LAN, Ihave yet to map one share wirelessly.  Ihave changed the Media Server name, enabled UPnP, changed the ftp server name, changed the workgroup name, forwarded ports from the router to my laptop, anything I could think of to find the **bleep** shares on my network.
I have tried the \\192.168.... Method that only brings me tothe router setup page (no help there).
I have tried \\servername (both media, and ftp) nothing
I have tried creating a workgroup on my laptop with thestock and the changed workgroup names…nothing
I have upgraded firmware, downgraded firmware, even loaded opensourcefirmware (dd-WRT).
I can’t seem to figure this out.  While I was wired to the router I was able tomap the shares, but wirelessly…I should also point out that I am runningWindows XP Pro SP3, and am not a novice to this type of thing.
After this I am going to have to tackle the Twonky Media server issue.

Hey Avatar,
Thanks for resurrecting this for me...I had pretty much written it off...I spoke with at level 3 Tech support on the chat system.  Basically we figured that there are two Versions for this Router.  The Ver 1 uses similar chip/code architecture  as the WRT600N.  The 600n only supports up to 750G, and I've read elsewhere that it was a real pain in the...
http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=16543&p_created=1211...
I took it back to BB for an "exchange" and got the Ver. 2 (identifiable by the new packaging).  Got home, set-up, works a charm now.  I am currently downloading my Torrents to it directly...(edit 11/10: Having issue with MS SP3 and concurrent half-open outbound TCP connections)
Remember when you  set-up you have to enable the media server, and create a share...I just share the whole drive. Hope this helps...

  • WRT610N Mac & PC - 2mbps wireless LAN file transfer rates

    Equipment:
Linksys WRT610N connected to Motorola SB5101 Cable Modem
MacPro Dual Quad Core 3.0GHz XEON with three Western Digital drives set up on RAID 0 using internal Airport 802.11N.
Dell Inspiron 2600 - piece of crap but still get it done with Linksys WPC600N wireless card.
Sony PS3 connected to WRT610N via ethernet cable
DirecTV HR20-100 DVR connected to WRT610N via ethernet cable
    Problem is this:
Internet speeds are incredible. LAN speeds are awful.
I was transferring a 914MB folder from the Dell Laptop to my MacPro.
The transfer took 14 minutes. That averages a paltry 2 megabits per second.
The wireless card on the laptop shows around 130mbps with excellent connection strength. My MacPro also is excellent connection. I guess the laptop has a 5400rpm drive. I've been able to stream video to my PS3 from the laptop using my OLD wcg200.
Is there something I can do to speed up the LAN connection? I haven't tried to stream to my PS3 yet. The WCG200 that I had wasn't all that good so I replaced it with the WRT610N. I'm starting to regret my decision.
    thank you in advance
    WRT610N | WPC600N | Dell Inspiron 2600 -> Win XP | Mac Pro -> OS X 10.4.11, 10.5.4 & Win XP via Parallels

More testing... I built a crossover ethernet cable to directly connect the Dell to my MacPro. The LAN speed was 100mbit due to limitation of the Dell network adapter. Speeds were between 46 and 82mbps. MTU was 1500 MTU at 1300 and 1200 yielded no additional benefit. I disconnected the ethernet cables and went through the WRT610N using my Airport Wireless N and the WPC600N on the Dell. Speeds max'd out at 1 to 2mbps. I must say the Linksys WRT610N isn't playing fair...or am I missing something else in the mix?

  • Using airport extreme to share a wireless printer

I want to share my wireless printer with a pc laptop located elsewhere in the house.   I cannot send documents to the printer via the laptop.  Is it necessary to connect my airport extreme device to my printer via a usb cable?   And then what must I do if that is the case?   If not, how do I get the pc to talk to the printer?

Is it necessary to connect my airport extreme device to my printer via a usb cable?
No, not if your printer has wireless capability. I assume that your Mac is printing OK using wireless, correct?
If not, how do I get the pc to talk to the printer?
That would be a question for the support folks at the printer manufacturer. They will likely ask if you have setup the PC for printing capability. If not, they should be able to provide some tips for this.

  • Best wireless router too share Verizon Wireless USB720 connection?

Our connection with Verizon Wireless via USB720 modem on an older Imac keeps dropping because we us that via airport to connect 2 other Macbooks. In research, I guess it's because airport and EVDO share a similar RF. Anyway, I need a wireless router for the USB720, and I don't have a clue where to start. What's the best router? Am I going to have to install the VZ Manager for the USB720 on the router, via the Imac?

check out the 3G/cellular routers from Cradlepoint.
The best one for home use is the http://3gstore.com/MBR1000 because of its WiFi N wireless range.
You won't use/need VZAM. you connect via airport or ethernet cable to the MBR1000

  • Dell and Apple share same wireless signal?

I have a fairly new Macbook C2D and a Playstation 3 as well as a Dell laptop and a Dell desktop that belongs to other members of my family in the same house. My question is about a wireless router. We have DSL internet that is about to be installed in about a week and in order to all share the internet all over the house I was going to opt for a wireless router to avoid running ethernet cables everywhere. However, I was wondering if I buy a Linksys (sp?) router or another name brand will all of our computers be able to share the same wireless signal? I didn't know if mine being an Apple and a Sony and theirs being Dells if it would matter. Also, can 4 computers share the same wireless signal anyway? I apologize if these are stupid questions but I have unfortunately had dial-up internet my entire life and know nothing about DSL (is it really that much faster?) or wireless at all. Please help! Thanks in advance!
    1.83GHz Macbook C2D 1GB RAM 160GB HD   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   5.5G 80GB White iPod

As long as all the computers have a wireless card i.e. airport, linksys, atheros... you shouldn't have any probs. remember that the more people using the internet, chances are, it's going to be slower. and yes, dsl is faster.

  • How to share mobile wireless connection from Win XP to mac?

    Hi,
I have two comupters, one mac and one PC (win XP). I am trying to share the mobile wireless broadband from my PC to the mac. I set up the sharing from mac to PC successfully quite a while ago, but now I need to work extensively on mac. So I tried to set up the sharing in the other around and nothing worked at all. Here is what I did.
    1. I enabled the sharing of the mobile wireless connection on PC.
    2. I tried to set up a small/home network, but it didn't work on Mac as the windows softwares can't be run on mac
    3. I also tried to set up a peer-to-peer connection from PC to Mac which also didn't work.
Does anyone how to do the sharing from PC to Mac? Thanks a lot!

Okay, firstly some routers or mdoems come with 2 ports on the back so you can connect two different computers so simply plug them both in
if not, then i advise you buy a router which allows you to add numerous computers to the same network via wires or add numerous computers wirelessly
i have one computer connect to my netgear router -wired
i have one computer wirelessly connected with a Netgear USB wireless reciever
then i got my laptop which is connected via wireless
i have xbox live which i connect to the internet via my laptops wireless connection, this can be done with any pc or laptop aswell
    what you do is
wireless networks - where it showws any detected networks
change advanced options - on the side
    advanced tab
then allow other computers to use this computers internet connection
    simple as
all you do is plug in your other pc or whatever

  • WRT610N 5ghz xbox 360 wireless N adapter won't connect (xbox 360 "Wireless Mode = Not connected")

    Hi folks,
Looks like some other folks have reported similar. Haven't seen if an answer has been found anywhere.
    WRT610v2 running latest firmware.
xbox 360 sees both the 2.4 network (ssid = network1) and the 5.0 network (ssid network2) when it does its scan.
Initially, xbox showed network strength for 2.4 network at 3 out of 4 bars and 5.0 network at 1 out of 4 bars.
Connects to 2.4 network just fine
Won't pull an ip address and reports "Not connected" when I select the 5.0 network.
I tweaked the wireless settings per some suggestions I found in this forum and now it shows the 5.0 network at 4 out of 4 bars signal strength. Also turned security on and off and xbox 360 reported the changes in security on the 5.0 network.
So the xbox 360 is definitely seening the 5.0 network. and can tell if it is running WPA2 or not.
If it can see the 5.0 network and recognizes what security and network type (infrastructure) is set, would would stop it from connecting to the WRT610n router and getting an IP address? No mac filters or firewalls are set and, again, connects just fine and gets an ip address if I select the 2.4 (network1 ssid) instead.
Won't work if I manually set IP, subnet, gateway, dns either.
Have tried mixed versus dedicated on the N radio...
    Any suggestions would be appreciated.
    thanks!
    rjb

    Hello,
Thanks for the suggestions. Tried as you suggested but still no luck. Seems to see the 5ghz ssid just fine with plenty of strength but just will not pull an ip address or even connect if I manually assign.
    Any other thoughts?
thanks again for taking the time to respond.

  • WRT610N Internet port connected wirelessly to another wireless router

I was sold the WRT610N (by a Dell rep) having been told I could do the following:
I have a Netgear 802.11b/g wireless router hooked up to a cable modem.  I want to use the WRT610N to access the Internet wirelessly through the netgear, the plug an Ethernet cable into the back of the WRT610N and plug a PC on the other end of that cable so that the PC can hit the Internet.  How do I do that (configuration)?

As sold off the shelf, the WRT610N can't do that.  What you should have bought instead was an internal or external network adapter.
Or, you could load 3rd party firmware (e.g. DD-WRT) to the WRT610N to configure it to act as a client device.

  • Connecting two WRV200's to share same wireless and wired network

I am looking at purchasing a second WRV200.  I want to have both wired together on the same network along with having them include the wireless on both to the same network. i.e. having two wired locations and two wireless AP's to get on to the one network.
Is there a way to configure two WRV200's to do this?
    Regards...

Yes. You can use the access point inside the WRV200 bypassing all the router functions. You configure the second WRV with a free LAN IP address inside your main LAN (e.g. 192.168.1.2 if 192.168.1.1 is your main router). You disable the DHCP server on the second WRV. Then you wire a numbered LAN port of the second WRV to your existing LAN. Do not use the internet port of the second WRV. Now you only use the wireless access point and the switch inside the WRV.
To create a single wireless roaming network you set up the wireless on both WRVs with identical wireless settings (SSID, wireless security, keys, etc.) The only difference should be in the allocation of channels. They should not use the same channel to avoid interference.

  • Air card on Imac. Set up & share internet wirelessly with  Nintendo Wii.

I have tried to set up without success, connecting my iMac,s air card internet connection with a new Nintendo Wii. I have at one point got the Wii to recognize some connection signal (name of my iMac) but no through connection to internet with air card online.
Unfortunately, I have changed several settings on my iMac in the bluetooth and airport setups so it is not at the same starting point as original.
FYI I have an airport extreme also, which has never been utilized but is a recognized network on my MAC.

Your AirPort Extreme should be connected to the internet via the modem or whatever your ISP provides. The Mac and Wii connect to the AirPort, either wirelessly or via ethernet cables. When set up this way, your Mac will have nothing to do with connecting your Wii to the internet.
I hope this video will help:

  • How do you share files wirelessly?

This is the problem: I have a Time Capsule running my wireless network. I have a Macbook and a Macbook Pro (both running OS X 10.6.2) on the network. I have enabled FileSharing using AFP on both. In Finder, I can see each Macbook in the corresponding Sharing field. I can connect to the public folders as a Guest. I can't connect as the Registered User because both prompt me for a password. They both default to user names.
One of these Macbook's is a less than a week old so has only ever had 2 passwords entered into it. Every one I enter is wrong. What the **** is going on?

I've had a long-running Sharing problem which I've just solved and I'd like to pass on this tip.
Like robboTM I have 2 Macs connected thru a network made by a Time Capsule. In System Preferences/Sharing pane I have (1) enabled File Sharing, (2) made both computer names appear as Accounts and (3) made the accounts Read & Write. I've done this on both computers. Each computer can see the other; that is to say, computer A appears in the Finder sidebar/Shared of computer B and computer B appears in the sidebar of computer A.
Using computer A, I can click on B in the Finder sidebar - it connects to B - B's Desktop appears as one of the folders - and I can drag folders from A and they appear on B's Desktop. But when I try to do the reverse, I find I cannot drag folders from B and sent them to A - even though the situation appears to be completely symmetrical. Instead, I get a message on B saying that I don't have "sufficient privileges to complete the operation."
The solution: when I look at computer A on computer B, it has a "Connect As..." button beneath computer A. After a few seconds it seems to make the connection, the folders on A appear and there seems to be no need to click on the button. Wrong: click on it - type in the admin password - and bingo, now I can pass stuff from B to A (just as I could pass stuff in the reverse direction). Symmetry restored.

  • WRT610N Storage Share Problem

    Hi,
I have plugged in a usb disk but cannot see the share on my network.
Also I cannot ping the Router by host name.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Nick

Perform a full reset on the router by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds.  Release for 10 seconds and power cycle the router.  Reconfigure the router and then download the manual here and follow the instructions for your USB device.
