WRT610N

I have on order a WRT610N, it should have arrived last fri, but they sent me a WRT160N instead, so i have sent it back and they are sending me out the original router I ordered. After playing around with the 160N, I have some general questions about connectivity to a DSL network (virgin media) On my existing wireless router, I am set up for DHCP and just had to put my user name in for my account details and tick a checkbox for the router to discover the connection details. I couldn't see a screen that had the equivalent on the linksys router, I think I had to choose between PPoE, LT2P and a couple of other options... I did run the ELA, but it could not detect my network type Having read the FAQ, I see that I have to 'clone' my MAC address, is this still the case? Do I have to do that for every machine that I want to connect to the network? Can someone confirm for me that I have to select the DSL option, and then clone the MAC of all the machines that I want to connect to the network. I am just trying to avoid frustration when the router arrives and to know what I am doing in advance Thx for your help

Access the setup page of the router by launching an
Browser and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When
it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field
empty and provide password as "admin" (Without quotes)
click on ok.
On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be
on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings
button.
Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".
- Click on enable
Click Clone & click save settings
Check WAN Ip on Status page of router ....
If getting Valid Ip .... try going online
If you are getting Ip - 192.168.1.X ...change the LAN Ip to 192.168.2.1 ....Power cycle for 3-4 minutes ...
Try going online
If still not working ...use Internet Connection type as PPPOE .... Use Username & Password provided by Service Provider ....
Click save settings....
Look for WAN IP address again under status page ....

  • WRT610N - Unable to change "Server Name" - No Text box.

I have my WRT610N running V2 firmware.  In all of the documentation I see, on the Admin area within the Storage Tab, there is a text box next to the Server Name and you are able to update that field to change the Server Name.  However, I have no textbox here, and thus am unable to change the Server Name.  I've attempted factory defaults, firmware upgrades, and multiple reboots to attempt to solve the issue.  Any help out there?
    Thanks in advance

Whats the Firmware version is installed on your Router and whats the Version number of your Router? If it's an Version 2 Router, then it doesn't have an option to change the Server Name. As far as i know the Version 1 Router has an option to change the Server Name.
If its an Version 1 Router and if you have updated the firmware, with the latest firmware you don't have an option to change the Server Name, By Default its WRT610N.

  • Optus ADSL2+ and WRT610n Quick Guide to setting up.

Hi all fellow Optus (australian isp) ADSL2+ and Linksys users,
I have a quick guide to setting up your new WRT610n with the optus supplied ADSL2+ Speedstream 4200 modem. This should solve most users problems with no internet connections, firewall rules not appearing to work properly etc.
It took me several hours of stuffing around and online researching untill I got these two to work together and have full firewall funtionality!
First up.... DON'T USE the LELA to setup the router! For some unknown reason, the laptop I used to setup the router, was configured by LELA to be a proxy and gateway, and unless that laptop was on.... the router wasn't passing info through it and back out to the internet! A full Reset of the Router was needed to clear this setting!
    Now Lets get started.
BEFORE inserting the router into the network and connecting everything up, we need to reconfigure the Speedstream modem to FULL BRIDGE mode. NOTE! this will infuture disable the Web interface to the DSL modem, so changing to FULL BRIDGE mode should be the last thing you do to the modem before logging out. A full hard reset (little button) will restore the web functionality again should you need to put it back to normal.
    1) Setting Speedstream 4200 to Full Bridge mode - This is necessary for the Modem to fully pass on ALL of the ISP settings. Such as correct gateway info, DNS info, "REAL" online IP address (not the generic psuedo 10.x.x.x number) etc.
    - To do this, open your web client, Internet Explorer or similar. And enter the IP address 10.1.1.1
    - Feel free to look around the settings of the modem but don't change anything just yet. Wouldn't be a bad idea to take screenshots of all the settings pages now like I did should I need to return it to original settings.
    - The Webpage of the modem will open up and click on PPP - Take note (as in write this down!) of your "PPPoE 8/35" type which you'll select in the router later, and your Username for optus logon and password (you should know that or go looking for that paperwork that has your username and password that came with your optus Modem installer CD). You will enter all this login info in the router later as the router will do the logging in and take over from the modem!
    - Next, click on Mode - You will see 3 options. For most, it will currently be on Optus Bridge. This mode enables a router inside the modem and is now to be replaced by the new Linksys you just bought. By Changing this to FULL BRIDGE mode, you essentially disable the modems internal router and turn it into a dumb modem (like the good old days of dumb dial up modems yey!)
    - When you've changed to FULL BRIDGE mode, it will tell you the Web interface is now disabled. Close the window. And lets get to configuring the router.
    2) Plugging everything in time!
    - The Speedstream 4200 ADSL2+ Modem stays plugged into the wall as normal, but the LAN cable which used to go to your computer now plugs into the WAN port of the router.
    - Plug the PC into one of the LAN ports of the Router also.... or if like me, you have a Switch that all the PC's use, plug that into the router.
    3) Setting up the WRT610n (or similar linksys router)
    - Open Internet Explorer/Firefox and enter the IP Address of the Router (Fresh install IP is 192.168.1.1)
    - Username is "admin" and password is "admin" (you'll want to change this later I'm sure)
    - OK now your in! We need to setup the internet account settings.
    - Setup-Basic Setup page:- Internet Connection Type will be what you saw in the modem PPP page (you did write that down didn't you?). For me, I select PPPoE.
    - The enter my optus username info and password
    - click on Keep Alive (30 Secs).
    - Then click Save Settings at the very bottom of the webpage.
It will likely ask to reboot.... let it do so
    Now at this point:
    - Your modem should have always been in Sync
    - Your LAN IP from the WRT610n should be in the 192.168.1.100+ range? (I changed this later to put my IPs back in the 192.168.0.100+ range so I didn't have to reconfigure static PC's or printers around my network)
    - Your Router should have reset about now and hopefully logged onto the internet through the modem.
To check all is working fine. Open the Routers webpage again and click on Status. Under the Internet Connection area, Click connect if it hasn't already connected for ya. This page should auto-refresh.
Check that the connection says Connected and that the IP addresses given in all the fields appear to be internet addresses (ie not 10.x.x.x or 192.168.x.x etc). If not, check that the status lights on the modem are all correct (you know how it should look when it's ok).
Open IE or firefox and check that you have internet!
It's important to make sure that the Internet IP Address in the Status page matches the one you get from http://www.whatismyip.com/. Because if it doesn't, then the Router isn't truely at the front of the Internet-Lan boundary. If this is the case, you may still have internet working ok, but the firewall portforwards may not work as seen in other forum posts around the net.
If it's OK, then Grab a Beer and Celebrate, you've just saved yourself 6 hours of hair pulling frustration!
    SUCCESS!
Now, if your so inclined.... I would highly recommend changing Admin passwords, adding security to your Wireless connections, changing your DHCP to something your comfortable with or just leave them alone if everyone is server assigned IP's. I find it's a good idea to use the DHCP Mac reservation in the basic setup so I know each PC will get the same IP each time it logs into the router and thus makes Portforwarding SOOoooo much easier knowing the IPs don't change on you when the IP lease time expires if the PC has been offline too long.
Please feel free to comment on this, I'm pretty sure 99% apart from grammar is correct! Hope it helps many new and old users.
Have a brilliant day! and may the force be with you!
    Ramjet

It's not clear to me exactly what problem you're having, but does this post help?

  • WRT610n Router lag with multiple devices?

Hi, I had a WRT54G (best router I've used!!) but ugraded to WRT610n after a wrt310n upgrade didn't work well with XBox. The WRT610n v2 has been great but I''ve noticed some lag issues when running multiple devices. While I understand this can be expected I don't expect it to this extent when not using that much and never had the issue before with the 54g. Are there settings that can be changed to improve this?
My setup is Mediacom 20/1.5 with a Motorola SB6120 modem. WRT610n router with a hard wired desktop (usually off and not used), a wireless n notebook wireless (also usually off) as my main use is for XBox 360. 1 wireless n with the new n adapter from microsoft and 1 wireless g with the old white adapter from microsoft. Usually only one is connected at once but sometimes my son will be on the other at the same time. I usually have no isse even still with the 2 (and never did before) but if any other pc is turned on or my Zune HD which connects also if I go on the marketplace seems to slow my setup down. As said before this was never an issue on the old setup but seems to be a problem now. Can I change any settings to stop this problem?

You might be facing the problem because the wireless settings set on your Router to its default settings, So you need to change certain settings on your Router, and that would improve the signal and speed quality on your wireless computers..
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on a computer hard wired to the router...In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1...Leave the Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
On the set-up tab change the MTU Size to 1365 and click Save Settings...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbors network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75,Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304,Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 and Click on Save Settings...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Problems with wrt610n and mac mini (MA206LL/A*)

i purchased a new wrt610n and one of the machines that is connected is a mac mini, 1.66 ghz intel core duo.
#ma2066/ll/a for those who want to compare notes. the computer is stock with the 802.11g wireless card
that came with the machine. it is running the current software and all the updates are up to date.
    i am using wpa 2 personal w / aes
their is some kind of incompatibility or issue between the wrt610n and the mac mini.
either using the wireless connection OR connected directly to the router, web pages are very slow to load. sometimes it can take
up to 45 seconds for the mac mini to open up a webpage. for 45 seconds it is at 'contacting website'
when  i try to run software update, i get a time out error -1001, make sure you can connect to the internet and try again.
hulu desktop is also running slow.
copying a file from the mac mini to a another computer over wifi averages about 1 mb/s
when i informed linksys about this problem, they took my phone number and said that a linksys technician / senior tech support employee
would call me back. that was a day or so ago. i asked if i can have any newer firmware, considering the latest is 5 months old.
i am considering returning this router, but i don't see a lot of good alternatives that have similar features. i have 21 days to return this. the restocking fee will be 15% i am also considering various 802.11n solutions for the mac mini, even including the dell 1500 wireless mini card, i heard it works as an airport card.
if i do get a different model router i would like external antennas.
my previous router was a 5 year old wrt54gs version 2.0, and it never had a problem with any of the computers with the network.
the trouble shooting steps involved changing the beacon to 75 and the mtu to something else, i forgot. it did not make a difference.
i moved the mini and connected it wired to the wrt610 and turned off the airport wireless card and there was no improvement.
when i disconnected the wrt610n and connected the mac mini directly to my dsl modem. the issues were suddenly gone.
theres some kind of problem with this particular unit. and i would like to hear from others who have solved this or are experiencing
    the same probem

    Try this -
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab

Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
    5GHz Wireless Settings :
Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network.

  • Can I use a repeater with a WRT610N?

I'm very dissatisfied with the range and signal strength of my new WRT610N dual band router compared to the WAP54G Access Point I used before.  Can I configure the Access Point as a repeater for the 2.4 GHz band on the WRT610N if I use the WRT610N as a Wireless G router rather than wireless N?
If so, how can I do it?
Thanks for any help and suggestions?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

What your doing is turning the WRT54G into a switch (that can produce another wifi signal).
    1. First thing you need to is connect the old router like normal and log into it. Unplug the WRT610.
    2. You need to change three things. Under the first page to the left you'll see "Router IP" to the right of that you'll need to change the local IP Address to 192.168.1.2
    3. Now down a little further to the left you'll see "Net work address Server setting (DHCP)". To the right of that you'll need to change the "Starting IP to 150.  Now press save at the bottom.
    4. Now go to the next tab "Wireless". Down on the page you'll see Wireless Network Mode. Set this to G only. Now at the bottom click save settings.
Ok now this router is set. Unplug this router and plug in the WRT610 and connect it as normal. Take one of the four ports on the WRT610 and plug it into the out port on the WRT54G. Do not use the Internet in port. By doing this you have change the WRT54G in to a switch.
Note1: On the WRT610 you can change the wifi to N only signal. This way the WRT54G show as a G and the WRT610 shows as N.
Note2: Now you can log in to each one. By Changing the IP on the older router you'll log in as 192.168.1.2 and the new router (WRT610) you'll login as 192.168.1.1
    I hope this helps.

  • WRT610N and WUSB600N, "freezes" when playing online

    Hi!
I have  a  WRT610N and WUSB600N. They work good for downloading/uploading files and surfing the web but when I play online poker the connection freezes(the connection doesn't drop) a couple of seconds a couple of times each minute. I'm using the 2.4GHz and the N mode, everything else is set to auto. I changed the encryption to AES but that didn't fix it. I've tried playing using a cable instead and that works perfectly.
Any ideas on what might help?

You need to adjust the Wireless Settings on your router :
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1
Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
-Here select manual configuratioon...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Wide-40MHz and change the Wide channel to 9 and Standard Channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on save settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select either TKIP or AES...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 6 characters...Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
    Click on Advanced Wireless
settings>>Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation...
Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
    See if this helps you...

  • WRT610N issues with Windows 7 RTM and what's my version nothing printed on the back of the router

I got to explorer, choose network, then click the computer icon for WRT610N, it asks for a user name and password I enter the admin user name + password (here I notice that the domain is by default my computer domain, so I enter user name as \\WRT610N\admin) however, I get a prompt which says the user name is invalid.
    Any ideas???
Also on another note, if I turn over my router to check which version it is, there is no version number mentioned... my firmware as displayed when I get to the router status page displays as "Firmware Version:  1.00.03 B15  May. 14, 2009"
Thanks in advance for the help.

If its not accepting the default Username and Password, then have you tried to change the password to access the storage Drive when you were trying to configure the settings on  your Router? If you are not sure about the settings, then login to the Router setup page and click on the "Storage" tab and click on the sub tab "Administration" and under "User Management" select the User "admin" and click on "Modify" and change the password and click on Save Settings...
Once you are done with the settings, now try to Map the drive again on your computer, and when prompted for the Username and Password, type username and password (admin : username and password : which you created) and click Ok. This will let you view the Shared Folders which you have created on your Storage Drive. Right click on it and select "Map Network Drive" and below check the box "Re-Connect at Logon" and click on Finish.
These way it will map the Storage drive on your computer and you should be able to transfer the files on your Storage Drive.

  • I have a WRT610n and the 2.4 GHz just stopped working (5 GHz network is working fine)

Almost with the coming of the new year, the 2.4 GHZ net slowed down to nearly nothing.
That is to say that it works only very slightly, and is usually not even visible as an option to select.
But the 5 GHz network is available and works fine.
    Here is my setup:
Speed touch modem supplied by Telus
Linksys router WRT610n ( i think version 1, because there is nothing written to tell me otherwise - there is no ver 2 next to the model number)
    Macbook Pro laptop (new)
    dell windows laptop (old)
two pc desktop machines (one running 2.4 GHz wireless net adapter, the other running a 5GHz net adaptor)
an iPhone (new) --> only works at 2.4 GHz (i checked)
the wireless networks are named as follows:
"SHONESY 5 GHZ" for the 5 GHz signal
"SHONESY 2.4 GHz" for the 2.4 GHz signal
for months, everything worked fine. the macbook communicated on the 5 Ghz net along with one pc downstairs (wirelessly).,
my iPhone communicated nicely with a full strength signal and good speed.
then, something changed and the 2.4 GHz net all but failed.
when the dell is plugged in via a hard line ethernet cable to the router, no problems - i get 1.3 MBPS on the speed test
the macbook can only see the 5 GHz network, but works fine.
same for the pc downstairs that runs on a 5GHz wireless network USB adapter
the iPhone now only gets one bar (if anything at all), and usually cannot connect (but can usually see the SHONESY 2.4GHz network in the utilities/wifi setup area)
    i am really stumped.
could the router have failed? how can i check it?
what could explain what I am seeing.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
    colin

Try resetting the device by holding down the reset button on the rear of the device for 30 seconds. If this does not resolve your issue, then it may be a hardware malfuntion. I have noticed that my 610n was running very hot and it was a common problem so I put a laptop cooler under it and its been keeping it nice and cool. May have just burned out. I hope you get it working.

  • WRT610N disconnects and does not work with Vista or media center extenders like the DMA2200

Linksys and all other router manufacturers advertise the greatness of the wireless 5ghz band (especially with 802.11n), but I’m beginning to have my doubts.  It is true that the 5Ghz band is hardly being used so you'll have virtually no one to compete with.  However, the 5Ghz distance in no way compares to 2.4Ghz, and as a matter of fact, I find it to be quite terrible.  At approximately 20 feet away, both my Linksys DMA2200 and HP notebook barely get 1 bar using the 5Ghz N band with my WRT610N router.  In comparison, while using my 2.4Ghz WRT54g router, I get 5 full bars at that range, and at least 2 bars from anywhere else in my house.
I have all Linksys equipment in my house as I have been impressed with all of their 2.4Ghz in the past.  However, I’ve recently upgraded everything to dual-band N equipment and found numerous flaws in each of the new devices, plus none of them really even play well together.  My setup is: Linksys 610n router, DMA2200 media center extender, and a WUSB600N Dual-Band Wireless-N USB Network Adapter for my laptop – all of which are currently using the most up-to-date firmware. Other devices include a WRE54G extender and  Nintendo Wii.
Problem  #1) The LELA software with the new N devices doesn't even recognize that my DMA2200 is a media center extender.  Using LELA, I should be able to select my media extender and allocate more bandwidth for streaming media.  However, since my extender only shows up as an “unknown network device” those options are greyed out.  I tried to manually change the device to a media center, but still no go.  I suppose you can manually allocate bandwidth in the router setup somewhere, but considering these are all Linksys products, it’s absolutely ridiculous that an option specifically incorporated in the LELA software for a Linksys Media Extender does not work!!!
Problem #2) If you are only using one system with the router, the router might actually work as intended.  For most of us though there are going to be at least 2 or more systems connected to the router (wired, wireless, or a combination of the two) such as a PS3, Wii, laptop, PC, media extender, Xbox, etc.  If that’s the case, you’re probably screwed because you WILL experience frequent dropouts… ESPECIALLY if just one those clients is a VISTA machine.   Check the Linksys forums and you will find that this seems to be a problem with all of the new Linksys routers (610N, 310N, and 110).
Here is a Microsoft article that explains the issue
       http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us
Problem #3) Because of  problem #2 I will never be able to get rid of the dropouts since my network is using one of Linksys’s media center extenders.  The DMA2200 is essentially a VISTA PC to some extent and accepts DHCP requests the same as a VISTA PC.  Since it is not really a PC though, there is no registry modification that can be done to alleviate the VISTA problem (not that the registry mod really works anyways).  So as long as I try to use my DMA2200 wirelessly with my WRT610N router, the frequent dropouts will occur and there’s nothing I can do about it.  This is REALLY TERRIBLE since the DMA2200 is specifically designed to be used with the WRT610N router in order to take advantage of the 5Ghz band and wireless N transfer rates.  You absolutely need 5Ghz wireless N to efficiently stream HDTV WIRELESSLY, but if you lose your connection every 10 minutes, it is impossible to watch any type of streaming media.
Problem #4) As mentioned already, when the “N” 5Ghz range is working on the WRT510N router, the distance sucks compared to standard 2.4Ghz G, N or mixed mode networks.  You can try to make it better by strictly using N products, disabling the 2.4ghz band all-to-gether, and using the wider 40mhz frequency, but it doesn’t really help.  The higher 5Ghz band is a more concentrated signal and therefore simply does not reach as far as the lower 2.4ghz band.  I wonder why all of these new products state that the 5Ghz range will increase your distance, when in fact it actually makes it worse?
So… basically, this router does nothing that it claims too and is basically rendered useless on any network with a VISTA machine.  This has not been addressed by any Linksys firmware updates or VISTA software updates so there is no reason to even consider using this router if you you’re using VISTA or some type of VISTA Media Center Extender such as the Linksys DMA2200.
Although, I’ve always sworn by Linksys in the past, the amount of wasted time, frustration, and horrible support has really changed my view about them.  I’ve reverted back to my old trustworthy WRT54g router and had to run cable through my house so that I wouldn’t have to box my DMA2200 extender up and let it collect dust in the attic.  It’s really disappointing that I spent all this money to buy this equipment specifically because they’re supposed to work together, but in fact they don’t.  Plus what’s the point of having top notch wireless equipment if you have to run cables in order for them to work?

I have fixed all the IP adresses to avoid the DHCP problem but I still have problems.
    I have sereval scenarioes:
    1. MC < 1Gb wire > WRT610N < 5.0n WIFI > MX
I can see HDTV on this one but it disconnects
    2. MC < 1Gb wire > WRT610N < 2.4b/g WIFI > MX
    No HDTV and disconnections
    3. MC < 2.4b/g WIFI > WRT610N < 2.4b/g WIFI > MX
No HDTV but no disconnections - but very slow and streaming like youtube
    4. MC < 100Mb wire > WRT610N < 2.4b/g WIFI > MX
No HDTV but nice picture - testing for disconnections right now - 30+ min.
    Result:
This test was very good. Stabil streaming, no disconnects for an hour. Won't support HDTV but the rest seem to work fine.
    5. MC < 100Mb wire > WRT610N < 5.0n WIFI > MX
Not tested yet - looking forward to this - might bring me HDTV.
    Result:
This gives HDTV but there is a problem with stability on the streaming but very difficult to see on the picture. Testing for disconnects - now tested for 30 min. - no disconnects.
    This looks really promissing.
I am pretty sure that the WRT610N have a problem in the switching part of the router specially when it has to switch from 1G to WIFI. I bought the WRT610N to get HDTV on WIFI and Cisco markets the DMA and WRT610N as a perfect match. But it definately have problems - i still do not understand their silence about this.
I will come back with the last results when I have them
    /John

  • Connectivity Problems with Cisco WRT610n

I've recently started to get problems with the wireless connection to my WRT610n wireless router.  The mac drops the internet connection periodically - 3 or 4 times a day.  I've run both iStumbler and WIFi analyser and it doesn't seem to be the wireless connection that's dropping - just the ISP.  When I try to connect to a website I just get "contacting....." in the safari status bar.  The only way to re-connect is to switch airport to the other WiFi band.
It happens on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands.  There are other low-band users on the same channel so I've hard coded to a channel that isn't being used.  I've deleted all the local wireless services that I don't use from the networks list.  I've blown the latest firmware into the router  - none of thiese has made a difference.  When it occurs, running the macbook network analyitics shows wireless green and ISP red - but I can still connect using iPhone and windows PC - so the ISP hasn't dropped.
Interestingly, while trying to fix this problem I discovered another.  I cannot connect wirelessly to the router's set-up page - I have to ethernet into it. This is only a problem for the Macbook;  iPhone and PC can both see the router's set-up page via wireless whereas the macbook just says "contacting.....".  I don't know if these two problems are related, but I know that in the past I *have* been able to connect macbook wirelessly.
I've got a macbook pro 13 inch - I bought it in about May this year.
    2.7 GHz processor - Core i7
    8GB memory
    1333 MHz DDR3
    OS 10.6.8
All software up to date - including router's firmware.
    S/N 25 to 35 dB
Thanks in advance for any help.

Right, few more R&D's now and it gets even crazier...
I installed Ubuntu and it has no problem detecting Wifi on My Mac.
The craziest thing though is, when i hold the OPTION key while the system boots, we know that we can connect to Wifi from there, and indeed I was able to do that!!
And, once I select MacintoshHD, it boots but we are back to square one, no wifi detected yet again. If Wifi gets detected though, I'm getting this "Connection Timeout" errors.
Well, I guess I have to just accept that 10.8.4 doesn't just work with the Linksys router!!

  • Need help with WRT610N

About a month ago, I purchased the WRT610N, and had a fair bit of difficulty setting it up.  I'm not a networking guru, and unfortunately, though I know lots of programmers, I don't know many networking people, so I've been kind of feeling this out.
Getting the 610 to work required replacing my modem, which was a 9 year old SpeedTouch, and getting a newer Thompson.  Since doing that, the router has worked.
However, I'm not finding the performance is as great as I'd have thought, given the cost of the router, and I'm fairly certain that I might have something configured incorrectly.
I'm in a 2 story home, with a PC and the modem sitting on the top floor (where I used to use a WRT54G that reached to the basement), a laptop that is used anywhere in the house, and a PS3 and 360 sitting in the family room in the basement.  Upon setting up the 610N on the second floor, I found that the signal wasn't powerful enough to reach the basement, though the WRT54G had been.
I figured on moving the router and modem to the middle of the house.  This improved overall signal strength around the home....or at least averaged it out.  I then went through several wireless cards, to find one that worked for my PC.  The worst was the WMP300N, which never connected, except for a few minutes while talking to Linksys tech support, and then it just stopped responding, so they told me to try something else.  I then tried the WUSB600N, which seemed to function, though the signal was always up and down, and sometimes it would just stop responding.  Overall, it worked pretty well though.....but it always fluctuated between 81 and 241 Mbps (as rated by the Windows Connection Wizard....not any formal measurement).  I was concerned about it being fragile, so I decided to try another internal card.  The DLink DWA-552 was my next try, and in the 3 days I've had it, it's only disconnected once, and the speed seems pretty stable.  At the very least, it feels pretty much as fast as it is with a cable plugged in...consistently.  It claims 300 Mbps, but again, that's the Windows Connection Wizard saying it...not necessarily a test.
So, I took a directory with about 940 MB of files in it on my PC, and brought my laptop to the middle of the house, and hooked up the WUSB600N to test it.  I moved the files from the desktop to the laptop, and measured a 13.75 minute period to move the files.  I think that translates to 76 Mbps.  Still faster than the time it took to do it with the inboard G network card built into the laptop....but nowhere near the 200 Mbps some people have been getting.
So I've been playing with the router settings all day, trying to improve things, but have largely made things worse.  I kept a record of my starting settings, so I could restore them, and hope that someone might be able to advise me on what to do, and if it's even possible to improve the performance.
Right now, I've got the 5 Mhz channel set for the XBox.  I put it on A-Only, radio band 20 - standard (greyed out), and both wide channel and standard channel are set to Auto.   The XBox is the only device using that channel.  I chose A, because my understanding was that, for streaming videos, A is better than G, and the XBox isn't compatible with N, so it's not an option.
I then set the 2.4 Mhz channel to Mixed (B/G/N), set the radio band to wide - 40  Mhz, set wide channel to 6, and standard channel to 8 - 2.447 Ghz. Connecting to this channel is the desktop PC, with the DWA-552 dual band N network adapater, my laptop that has a built-in G adapter, and the PS3, which also uses G.
Tonight, I tried switching the 5 Ghz channel to N-Only, but once I did that, nothing could connect to that channel anymore.  Neither the desktop, or the laptop with the WUSB600N adapter.  In many cases, they don't even *see* the signal.
So, I started reading on the forums, and I've heard that 5 Ghz has a shorter range than 2.4, and I've also heard that 5 Ghz is *faster* than 2.4.  That's why I thought of switching my 5 Ghz channel to N-Only...figuring that if I assign just the desktop to it, and then change the 2.4 Ghz channel to G or Mixed, I'd connect the XBox, PS3, and laptop to the 2.4 channel, and have only the desktop on the 5 Ghz.  But now that none of my components can even see 5 Ghz broadcasting N, I'm back to the drawing board.
I've also read on the boards that I can't have N-Only and B/G broadcasting at the same time.  Is that the case if I'm trying to do 5 Ghz N, and then 2.4 Mixed?  Is that what's causing the problem?
Is 76 Mbps all I can expect from this, or is there a way to squeeze more performance out of it?  I've heard that playing with the advanced settings can improve things, but I'm a little scared of messing it up.
Anyways, I'd definitely appreciate it if anyone might have some tips for how to get better performance from this router.
    PLefRoad

AusCalais....from what I've been reading, there are any number of reasons that someone could be having trouble with this router.
I've come to the conclusion that it's not that the router is bad....it seems pretty powerful....but the Linksys software really doesn't work very well at all.....so one of the first things I can recommend is to get it out of your Startup menu, and use the Windows Wireless Networks tool instead.  I think the router might just be finicky, and the telephone support people Linksys uses in India or wherever just aren't very good.  I've spent probably a total of 9 hours on the line with them getting support, and at the end had to pay for support from them, and they still couldn't figure out how to help me....in the end, it was me using Google to research my problem, and reading and posting on these forums that solved it for me.
Which SpeedTouch home modem are you using?  Your problem sounds very much like what I was experiencing at the beginning.  I had an Alcatel SpeedTouch home modem, that my ISP provided to me in January, 2000.  It refused to connect, when hooked up to my router.  I kept getting PPoE errors and timeouts when trying to connect.  Then I googled WRT610 and Alcatel Speedtouch problem, and found posts in Dutch or German on another message board over in Europe, noticed those posts had the same tech terms, and ran those posts through Babelfish to translate them to English, and learned that the people over there were complaining that when they were using the Alcatel Speedtouch, the WRT610 wouldn't connect.  It seems like this router doesn't communicate with the Alcatel Speedtouch....even after I reset it to factory settings, and converted it into a bridge..
So I called my ISP, and had them send me a new modem.  I think now it's a Thompson 510 Speedtouch.  The moment that I connected the WRT610 to the Thompson, I got a connection.
LELA consistently failed during installation for me as well.  That's on XP SP2.  I'd always get an error, and even when I installed it without an error, as soon as I'd turn the software on, it would crash with an error.  So I ended up removing it.
From there, it was a matter of configuring wireless.  Out of the box, the 610 seems to have a shorter wireless range than my old WRT54G.  My 54G used to sit in my home office on the second floor of our townhome, and could carry a signal to the basement (albeit weak).  The 610's signal wasn't even detected in the basement.  So I moved the router to the middle of our house, and now I get signal all around.  I tried the Linksys WUSB600N, the Linksys WMP300N, and the DLink DWA-552.  By far the DLink works the best, which really surprised me.  I thought you were supposed to use Linksys adapters with Linksys routers, DLink with DLink, etc.  But the WMP300N worked for maybe 5 minutes, then stopped, and even after replacing it 3 times, refused to work.  The WUSB600N worked, but the signal was up and down, would sometimes freeze, etc....though it *did* eventually come back up.  The DLink has stayed up pretty much 100% of the time, and it stays solid in terms of speed.
The only other problem was my laptop, which has an old built-in wireless card.  It consistently would go dormant...like the router or internet connection had turned off.  It would say it was connected, but I'd get "page not found" errors for any page I tried to surf to.  That was an easy fix.  It turned out the drivers on that laptop, which was given to me used by a friend, were about 6 years old.  I found newer drivers from Dec 2007, installed them, and it's been up 100% of the time since.
I've found other posts on these boards regarding improving the router's range and performance in wireless transmission, by changing the advanced wireless settings.  I haven't tried that yet.  I'm kind of thinking that it all appears to be working now, and maybe I should just let it be.....the only thing I wish is that it had a better range.
I've just spent the last 10 minutes searching for the post on these forums, where a bunch of other people talked about it, and discussed optimal wireless settings for the router.....and now I can't find it.  They had specific details on where to try setting your beacon interval, DTIM interval, Fragmentation Threshold, and RTS Threshold.....but I could find it through Google two days ago, and now I can't.  I should have printed the page out.  Just try searches on "WRT610 problems" and "WRT610 settings", or optimization or something.
For now, in accordance with advice I received further upthread, I've deactivated my 5 Ghz band, and set my 2.4 Mhz band to WPA-AES security.  WPA2-AES worked for everything, except my XBox 360, which only works with WEP or WPA...not WPA2.  But with everything on 2.4 Mhz, it's transferring 940 megs of files in 9 minutes, which I'm pretty sure is decent for wireless...none of my friends are getting speeds like that.
The settings I'm using are as follows:
2.4 Mhz Band, set to "Mixed", Wide 40 Mhz Radio Band, Channel 6, 8-2.447 Ghz Standard Channel.  Security is WPA-AES.  Key Renewal is 3600 seconds.
    Advanced Settings are:
    Beacon Interval: 50
    DTIM Interval: 1
    Fragmentation Threshold: 2306
    RTS Threshold: 2307
Please keep in mind....I think those are default settings, as I don't think I changed them.  I'm not a networking pro.  I'm sure there are people on these boards who know 1000x more than I....all I'm giving you is the info on how my setup seems to be working.
Since going through the pain of setting up this router, it's been stable.  The router almost never disconnects, and aside from the signal appearing weak according to the Windows Zero Configuration utility, it still does connect, stays connected, and is quick.
I hope something out of this can help you.  It's a good router....I think how well it works is dependent upon the skill of the person setting it up.  Post your problems on this board....I've found this community pretty helpful....usually someone posts pretty quickly, to try and help.
    Sincerely,
    PLefRoad

  • WRT610N RIP version and SNMP

I just bought this router ... Never experience the overheating problem posted by other users, router is pretty cold, even after 3 days on In Italy the street price is quite expensive (180€ / 232$) but works great on 2.4G (5G suffer serious lack of coverage)
    Just two question
    1. Wich RIP version the router uses?
2 There is a way to have SNMP enabled?

    1. It uses RIP Version 1...
    2. The router(WRT610N) does not support SNMP...

  • Quality of Service with WRT610N and Vonage

I'm trying to get Quality of Service working with my WRT610N and my Vonage device.  The WRT is connected directly to my cable modem, and the Vonage device is connected to Ethernet port 1.  I've set up the Vonage's MAC address on the QoS tab to be priority "High" (done by selecting the "Voice Device" on the Category dropdown).  Additionally, I've set my Vonage options (on the Vonage website's page for my account) to use the highest bitrate (90 kbps, I think).  No other QoS settings have been made.
However, the router doesn't seem to be enforcing QoS at all.  If I do any kind of surfing at all (dragging around on Google maps to load new satellite pages is a good test), the voice quality on an ongoing Vonage call becomes very choppy.  Do I have to do something else to ensure that the Vonage device gets highest priority?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Yup, it should work. Been working with these devices lately and the only way to get a good connection from it is by connecting the Modem and the VONAGE then your router. COMCAST is alsready using smart modems so it should always recognize any devices connected to the modem. You can also try leaving the devices OFF for a minute and turn ON the devices, first the modem and wait for another minute then your VONAGE and wait for another minute and then your router.
Please post if it worked on not...

  • USB storage with WRT610N....help!

After spending 4 hours (no exageration) with Linksys Level 2 tech support I am at my wits end....
I just purchased a WRT610N and want to use the USB storage feature to backup my primary desktop.  Here's the specifics:
Desktop is an older Dell XPS runnings XP SP3.  Desktop has three logons....for myself and my kids.
I'd also like each desktop logon to be able to access the router USB storage feature so that we have a common place for pictures, etc.
I have an office laptop and I would like this to access the storage device
Eventually I will be adding more computers to the network for my kids.
I'm also interested in using the FTP access to get to the files on the storage device when I am away from home.
Through 3 separate tech support calls, each tech tried a different approach to get this to work.  Nothing worked.  I want to start from scratch....  What is the best way to accomplish what I want to do?  After suffering through the pain, is the WRT610N a good solution or should I return it to Amazon and do this some other way?
A final note, tech support did upgrade the WRT610N's firmware to 1.00.00.18.
Thanks in advance for your help!

The harsh reality is that the results for people trying to use the Storage Link function have been mixed, at best.  Especially in trying to utilize it for a "backuP' function.  The kernel used to manage the Storage Link is apparently unix/linux based, and has some difficulty playing nice with Windows based backup utilities.  Additionally, there have been reports that the connectivity to the attached devices is, at times, poor.  Finally, there are issues with file corruption (date/time stamps, specifically).  There have been no firmware updates to deal with these issues.  If your primary need is for an attached NAS solution, I would strongly recommend looking at other devices for that solution.

  • Windows XP and Windows 7 cannot see my WRT610N USB Drive

I have the WRT610N V2 router with current firmware.  I have tried a thumb drive and an IOMEGA 1tb drive.  In both cases the router sees the drive, allows me to create partitions, groups, and users but the computers in my home cannot see the drive.  I tried the Network wizard and explorer drive map option.  I even tried start/run typing wrt610n or \\wrt610n and I get network path cannot be found.  I have three computers in the house, one (XP) with Norton 360, one (XP) with SOFOS and one with no AV sw at all (Win7).  None of these can see the network path.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks
    Dan

To map the drive on your computer click on Start - RUN - type "\\192.168.1.1" and click ok... When prompted for Username and Password type "admin" and click ok... Now you will be able to see the folder which you have shared on  your router, right click on it and select "Map network drive" and click on finish.
Now it will map the drive on your computer and you should be able to transfer the file from your computer to the USB drive.
