WRTU54G slow speed through wireless.

Hello
I recently set up this router above and the speeds through wireless are about 1/3rd of the speed when connected through cable. Signal is strong and set to channel 11. No home phone whatsoever on that frequency. I'm also using the mixed wireless mode. Any ideas before I put it on craigslist? The router is new. Firmware is 1.00.15
Thank you

Try this,
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.0.1 and press Enter...Leave username blank & in password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
Click on the Wireless tab
-Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
-Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
- Set the Wireless channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WEP, Encryption should be 64 bit.Leave the passphrase blank, don't type in anything...
Under WEP Key 1 type in any 10 numbers please(numbers only and no letters eg: your 10 digit phone number) and click on save settings...
Please make a note of WEP Key 1 as this is the Security Key for the Wireless Network...
Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
Check the Wireless Connection status, if it gives you 54MB/sec of Speed then it should be fine...

  • Excessively slow speeds through airport??????

i just got this macbook pro 2.16, and when i connect to my airport network, i get excessively slow speeds, slightly faster than dial up. i can run my old powerbook 1.0 simultaneously side by side (not extreme), and it runs normally. my service is advertised as 5.0 down, & 365 up. anyone know the deal?

First and foremost. PLEASE CONTACT APPLE as well as post here. Insist that this be esculated to an engineer as tier 1 and tier two will do for you. This is the best way to make your case known to apple product support.
Yes, I agree with you on your issue. I see the exact same thing in my system.log. I would persume that this is a harwardware issue.

I would hope that I am wrong with it being hardware.:-) I am also going to post the email I sent apple.
Here is the email I sent. It sums up my problems.
    ---------BEGIN EMAIL-----------
Thanks for taking the time to try and help me out. I feel this issue should be escalated to the engineering department as there are many things that are just unexplainable. Below are numbered items that I am having with my new Macbook. If you could, could you please attach this information to the case notes so the next person can review this if needed.
    1. Wireless is not working like it should. I can connect to any type of WEP encrypted network and all communications work. My problem is when I try to connect to a wireless network using PEAP or EAP-TLS. My work environment uses a EAP-TLS. Other powerbook G4 machines and windows, linux, you name it work fine. Mine however doesn't. What I am experiencing then taking a sniffer trace to it it shows the EAP-TLS request, then handshake, the negoation of the keys, then finally I get an EAP Success indicating successful authentication. That tells me my certificate is good and I should be able to obtain a network ip address. My network connection says it is connected after I see the EAP success with the sniffer. It shows in the Internet Connect that I am connected to TLS network and the timer increments/counts up. I can try an hard code an IP address, gateway, and dns with within the preferences but that does not allow me to talk/pig other hosts by ip addresses on my local subnet.
    2. My second and most important issue is my connection speeds are TERRIBLE. I looked on the discussion.apple.com and several other people are saying the same thing. Here is the interesting thing. Some people say that if you manually assign an DNS server into the TCP/IP preferences the speeds will work just fine. I must say that by doing this it worked at one point in time. This is not the case now. Another interesting thing that happens to me is at one point in time, when I would look at the file /etc/resolv.conf file, I could see my nameservers listed in there. When I am looking in there now, my resolv.conf file is empty so there has to be another file my DNS entries are being entered. I just don't know where. I don't know where or how name resolutions are working with that file being empty. I also thing there is something that is going on with INETD and that it expects a reverse DNS lookup on everything. It doesn't matter if you are telnetting to an IP address or trying to bring up a webpage, INETD trys to get a response back from the reverse dns query. I have noticed that in a Microsoft environment if you are using a windows DNS, most of the time if my macbook sends a reverse dns query while trying to telnet to an IP address, the windows DNS server never answers back. The non-response is what appears to make network use so slow. If I try to use a bind DNS solution, and point my DNS to a bind server, I get an answer back on a reverse lookup even if the bind server doesn't know the reverse information. With Microsoft, if the DNS can't answer a reverse lookup request, it simply doesn't answer.
So with these two major issues, I would greatly appreciate it if you could forward this on. If an engineering needs to contact me via email, I can email snffer traces, etc. I just hope there is a resolution as this is a laptop I use soley for business and the way it is right now, it is hard for me to get anything done because both wired and wireless are not working as they should especially when I have other Mac's, windows, and Linux machines that are working with no problem.

  • E1200 slow wired & wireless speed through L2TP

I have L2TP connection. Without the router, right through the cable, I have 35 Mbps download and 70 Mbps upload.
Through the E1200 wired & wireless I have a huge speed reduction to 5-14 Mbps download/upload.
I have the latest firmware and I did reset it after the update.
I read a lot of information on this topic and a lot of people write that this router just can't handle higher speed through L2TP.
Is it true? Could it be fixed?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

If you only get 5-14Mbps download/upload speed through the router, which is far beyond the rate without it then, I have to say that the router has issues. You can try to lower down the MTU settings to 1460 then do the test again using speedtest.net.If that does not resolve the issue, I suggest, get a new router, preferably a gigabit one.

  • Speed through WRT54G is brutally slow

When I connect my laptop directly to my cable modem (no router), I get blazing fast speed (500 kbps).
When I connect my laptop through my NEW Linksys WRT54G v6 router, the speed drops to about 20-40 kbps. This applies to both wireless (WAN) and wired (LAN) connections.
What is causing this dramatic drop in speed?
    Windows XP Pro SP2
    WEP 64-bit security
    Channel 11MAC filtering enabled: Yes
    DHCP Enabled: Yes
    Autoconfiguration Enabled: Yes
    Thanks,
    - Shawn

Regarding the "hybernation" problem.  Let's hold off on fixing that until we can get your Internet connection working at full speed.  In the meantime, turn off "hybernation".   There is a dirty little secret in the computer world -- on many computers, hybernation does not work correctly.  It causes all kinds of problems because, when a computer comes out of hybernation, often devices are not properly reinitialized.
The first problem that has to be fixed is getting full Internet speed on a computer that is wired to the router.
I am unable to locate the user guide on your cable modem.  If you could post a link to the user guide for the DCM345, I would appreciate it.
I am confused by what you said about the 192.168.1.5  address.  Where did you set this address?  in the router?  in the computer?  Where exactly?
    Do the following procedure:
Go to "Network Connections", right click on your ethernet card (sometimes listed as Local Area Connection) and select "Properties" .   Make sure "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" has a check mark in the box.  Highlight this option, then click on the "Properties" button.   This will open a window labeled "Internet Protocol  (TCP/IP) ...".    In this window, (is this where you set 192.168.1.5 ?)  be sure it is set to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and also set to "Obtain DNS server address automatically".  No other boxes should be selected or filled in on this window.  If you see an "Apply" button, click on it. Then click on "OK" til all windows are closed.  DO NOT close the windows by clicking on the X unless there is no other choice.
Repeat the above procedure, only this time, in "Network Connections", start by right clicking on your wireless adapter, and select "Properties".  (Note:  I am assumeing that you are using a built in wireless card.  If the card is not built in, you may have to go to the wireless card driver or management software to check these settings.)
Power down your entire system, wait 1 minute, then start it up again.  Test your Internet connection, using a computer that is connected, by wire, to the router.  Are you getting full Internet speed now?
If you still have the same problem (i.e.  you get a very slow Internet connection), then your next step is to reset the router to factory defaults.  The router should work with your system when it is set to factory defaults.
Use the following protocol to reset your router to factory defaults:
    1)  Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2)  Disconnect all wires from the router.
    3)  Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4)  Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5)  Power down the router.
    6)  Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7)  Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8)  Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9)  Try to ping the router.  To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.  A black DOS box will appear.  Enter the following:  "ping 192.168.1.1"  (no quotes), and hit the Enter key.  You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out."   If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10)  Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1.  This will take you to your router's login page.  Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin"  (with no quotes).   This will take you to your router setup page.  Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen).  Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, power down your entire system and unplug it from the wall.  Connect the ethernet port of your modem to the "Internet" port on the WRT54G.  Power up the modem and allow it to fully boot (1-5 minutes).  Power up the WRT54G and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).  Power up your computer (make sure the wireless card is off).  Now test your Internet connection speed.  It should be working.  If you still have a problem with slow speed, power down the entire system, wait one minute, then power up and try one more time.  Report back with your results.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt.  In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware.  After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you have problems, report back the results of steps 9 and 10.  Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.

  • Linksys E4200V2 - VERY Slow Performance-WIRED, WIRELESS, INTERNET SPEED

Hi everyone...  I just want to start by saying that I am a very unsatisfied customer!
I purchased the Linksys E4200 V2 on 02.06.2012 since this is the latest high end router from Linksys which according to the specs and the reviews this router is supposed to be super mega fast...the box should probably say SUPER MEGA SLOW.
I called support and after spending two hours on the phone they said that the case will be escalated and that someone will contact me within 48 hrs - It has now been more than 72 hrs and no phone calls or emails have come my way - the router is still not performing.
    The following is my setup:
HP Quad Core Desktop with Windows 7 x64 bit with 8GB RAM
Network Card is an integrated 1GBPS card
I've upgraded all of my ethernet cables to Cat 6  (to see if this made and difference - which it did not)
    LinkSys E4200 V2 router
Western Digital My Book Duo Live 6TB external drive with ethernet port of 1GBPS
This weekend I went as far as reinstalling a fresh copy of Windows 7 x64 on a Solid State Hard drive
My PC is connected to the E4200V2 via Cat 6 cable
The My Book Duo is connected to the E4200V2 via Cat 6 Cable
The E4200V2 is connected to my cable modem via Cat 6 Cable
    ISSUES:
    WIRED
I am getting no more than 20mbs when I copy a 85GB folder from my PC to my external My Book Duo.  I expected to get either 1GBPS speed or at least 400MBs speed since all devices are connected via 1GBPS interfaces and the cables ar Cat 6.  I am using both the native windows copy and paste and I am also using TeraCopy to copy files.
    WIRELESS
The wireles speed is BAD as well - I am not getting no more than 50MBS with my laptop located just 20 inches from the router.
    CABLE MODEM CONNECTION
When I run speed tests to the internet I am getting a very slow speed test of 1.5MBS and sometimes I get 20MBS with the E4200V2 router.
With my OLD Netgear router I get speed tests of 28MBS and never 1.5MBS.

    Hi there,
I've got a very similar problem.
    I've got the Cisco Linksys E4200 (Firmware Version:  1.0.05 build 7 Aug 23, 2012).
With my previous router, I was able to copy files over the wired network at roughly 11MB/sec (about 100Mbps).
Now, with the new Linksys router plugged in, with the same cables and pcs, etc, I can only get an average copy rate of 4.4MB/sec - under HALF the speed that I was previously getting - and often sustained slow speeds of roughly 1.8MB/sec
    Any ideas???
Otherwise I'm returning this router for something else!!!
I can see that you already have the latest firmware. It might be that the firmware is corrupted. What I can suggest is to reflash the firmware, reset and reconfigure the router. You might as well try to disable WMM.

  • Slow Speed Tests through Airport Extreme (7.4.2)

I was experiencing some slow Internet speeds that I was troubleshooting with Comcast and worked with them to fix getting me back to 18Mb/s download speeds (with the computer plugged directly into the Comcast modem). Once that was fixed, I noticed that things were much slower after I put the Airport Extreme back in the mix. To troubleshoot further I plugged an ethernet cable directly from the computer into the Airport Extreme (eliminate wireless) and did not observe any speed gain (1-2Mb/s). If I take the very cable coming into the Airport's WAN port and plug it into my computer, my download speed tests skyrocket back to 18Mb/s. Odd huh?
After poking around on these forums, I tried setting the config back to default factory settings and re-applying the saved config. Same result.
I reapplied the latest 7.4.2 firmware and even tried it with "out-of-the-box" factory default settings. Same result.
I've tried brand new Belkin Cat5e ethernet cables. Same result.
Any idea as to what may be causing this??
I can reproduce this problem on 3 different laptops (Snow Leopard, WinXP, and Win7). Transfer speeds between these laptops appears to be limited to 2Mb/s when plugged into the airport vs significantly faster when plugged into another Belkin switch I have laying around.

I'm not able to provide a solution though I too find that the AE is not as fast as it is supposed to be. At one time I had a Belkin Wireless and an ADSL connection that topped out at 1.5MB/sec. Now I have a 50MB/sec internet connection and honestly, I have seen an increase in my speed over wireless but the Belkin really seemed quite zippy! I play World of Warcraft and I remember someone saying to me that AE or our Macs have Firewalls set-up that we don't know about or "something" that limits the speeds of the connections - which PCs and non-Apple products do not. Constantly see when downloading new patches from WOW, messages that I am behind a firewall - when I do not have firewall set on the AE nor on my Mac...

  • Getting slow wifi speeds on wireless router connected to the same LAN

I have a main router/firewall with two wireless routers(linksys E2500 and TP link) connected to it.I want to configure them to all be on the same LAN (192.168.19.0) so i experimented with the TP link first by removing the ethernet cable from the WAN port and inserting it in the LAN port then I disabled DHCP and it worked perfectly. The only downside is that i am getting slower speeds on the TP link compared to the linksys which is still on the 192.168.1.0 network.Ethernet also works fine though i've observed that the TPlink name displays on the ethernet NIC. Can the speed be increased one way or the other or i have to change my setup?

  • Slow speeds, almost dead, can't figure out what's ...

Hi all, I've had very slow speeds from my homehub for almost a week. I've tried a factory reset on the hub to no avail. I also spoke to technical support in India I think, but they were no help.
When I perform a speed check the speed from the exchange to my house is fine, it's after that it dies a death.
I've checked all cables and it is not cabling after the hub as this problem effects internet tv's that are connected via ethernet cable and others that are wireless and also tablets that work on wifi.
In the last week I have had download speeds as low as 0.03 and for only a few hours last Monday has it been OK all of a sudden. I presumed a fix elsewhere but the problem came back an hour or two later.
At the moment we can't use iplayer, youtube and every webpage takes ages to load. It's quite horrible.
Has anyone got any idea's what could be wrong and are there any diagnostic tests I can run on the hub to see if it's borked.

  • Extremely slow speeds on EAP-TTLS PAP secured network

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with a Broadcom 4312 wireless chip and when I connect to my schools network I get speeds that are as low as 100 K/s or slower.
When I go to speedtest.net I get speeds of 10 M/s down. I have tried using both the B43 and wl drivers and I get about the same speed on speed test and still very slow speeds when updating through pacman or downloading files.
I am running the most recent versions of the kernel and all drivers.
Here is the output from lspci:
    0b:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01)
If you guys have any ideas of what might help I'm willing to try it, thanks in advance.

Visited the Apple store today and they replaced the phone. They could not explain what was going on except for being a software issue.
They said if after restoring I have the same issue, you would have to restore the phone to new and re-install all apps and information manually from scratch.
I restored the phone from my backup, and all went well. No more slow LTE speeds, plus a new device.
The only thing I can think of that may have happened is updating carrier settings while updating the iOS at the same time. I thought it was normal because iTunes popped up the carrier update notification a few seconds later after starting the iOS 8 update.
The carrier update did have an option to cancel. I will definitely wait for the iOS update to complete before I update carrier settings next time.
I'm just wondering if my phone was out of warranty, and this happened, would Apple still replace the device?

  • Slow speeds using airport express 1st generation

I am currently using an airport express 802.11n 1st generation. I have a direct link from my modem to the airport express which provides a wireless connection to 4 other devices, my macbook pro (2009), iphone 5, android phone, and a windows computer.
I have been seeing very variable download speeds when using speedtest.net on both my macbook and iphone. I had just assumed it was my internet provider. However, I tried connecting my macbook directly to my modem using an ethernet cable instead of through the airport express. When I did that I had the full 50 Mb/sec download speed that I am paying for. When I then reconnect the airport express and measure the download speeds through wifi and with all 4 devices connected, I see much slower speeds, anywhere from 4 Mb/sec to 30 Mb/sec, but never the full 50 Mb/sec.
It seems that when my download speeds are really slow and I reset the airport express by just unplugging it and then plugging it back in, the speeds generally seem to improve, but again they usually average around 15 Mb/sec.
Another thing, it seems like the download speeds improve if only 2 devices are connected and not all 4. Yet, this seems unlikely, I would expect that the airport express could handle more than 4 devices!
When I connect with airport utility, the airport express has the latest firmware. I can't think of much else that would cause these slow speeds.
Any help would greatly be appreciated!
    Thanks.

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that appears during these hours that is preventing your 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) from providing a clean RF signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • Slow speeds on new BT Service in comparison with o...

    Hi all
I would love some help with this problem: I transferred by Sky package over to BT on 5 October and have seen a deterioration in speed since. I have called the Indian call centre several times and today, after I tried out a new BT Home Hub 2 they sent me, I'm at wits' end! The problem, needless to say, is consistently there.
For the record, I have made sure I've followed your forum's excellent help regarding improving slow speeds. I have ensured all my phone sockets are fitted with working ADSL filters. The Homehub has been moved around the room to several locations, all proving the interference I'm getting is not affected by location at home. My main socket for the hub is fitted with an Accelerator (which did make a slight improvement initially). However, the speeds I was enjoying prior to BT have diminished so far that it seems illogical that the problem exists at my end.
I have a BT Vision box too which works fine through the Comtrend ethernet / wireless sockets provided by BT. Turning these off has no effect on the speed. I bought a hub phone which works fine too.
Here are some stats from TBB's speed test. I performed a BT Speed test earlier and the results are consistently similar. I would have posted the BT results, but they reset before I could do so. Time pressures being what they are, I have to leave in a moment so I cannot wait another hour or so to repeat! 16/02/10 was Sky. Again, everything later than 05/10/10 is BT's.

  • Speed on wireless

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro with band n avaliable on wireless. But the speed is always slow on wireless compared to wired. I am on 100mb internet.
When wired, I did a speed test on speedtest.net and it comes to 90Mpbs, which is what I want, But once I try wireless it never goes over 30Mbps.
Now I know it could be due to a number of things, like change channels on wireless to find the best channel. Is there actually a limit what speed it will get on wireless. The only thing I can do to make faster is to change the band from 2.4ghz to 5ghz, even that sometimes only goes up to 50Mbps, but that also means almost none of my devices in the house can connect via 5ghz.
So im confused, just need some advice on the actual limitations on wireless please, and anything else I can do to improve. Thanks.

The broadband internet speed most ISPs quote is the maximum transfer rate that their connection can achieve under ideal conditions.  If their system is heavily loaded, or the site you are connecting to operates at a lower speed, you will not be able to achieve their quoted speed.  There is always a choke point somewhere.
Now, with respect to your in-house speed: wired is always fastest.  Eithernet can achieve speed up to 1 giga bit per second.  No ISP provides that access speed.  Wireless over n protocols in the narrow 2.4 GHz band achieving speeds of 30 Mbps are doing well, and 50 Mbps in the double-width 5 GHz band sound good.
I guess bottom-line is, if you are getting speeds as high as 50 Mbps you are actually doing rather well...many ISPs do not offer service at that level.
By all means, see what the activity level is in the frequency band/channel you want to use.  If you see a lot of other networks, move half a dozen channels and see what it looks like there.  If you can find a clear channel you will get the highest transfer rate your hardware is capable of delivering.
As long as all of your devices have the capability of working in the selected channel you are good to go.

  • Extremely slow speeds on Windows Computers with 5th Generation AirPort Extreme

I just got a new refurbished AirPort Extreme 5th generation. Everything works great for all of my OS X devices and iOS Devices. I am getting my ISPs speeds when doing tests. The issue is when I am using Windows devices. My roommate has a desktop and a netbook and both are getting extremely slow speeds. Speeds like .07Mbps down. Does anyone have any idea what the issue might be?

You have no large file?? Really.. in the whole computer there is not a windows update file.. a backup file... a movie download file.. nothing.. ??
Anyway that is irrelevant.. the issue is wireless.
Download the latest drivers from the wireless manufacturer.
You will need to find out what wireless card is used and locate the correct download for that model.
On the Airport it is well worth doing the following tests.
    1. Change the name to SMB standard.. short no spaces pure alphanumeric.
So if your wireless name is Fred Blog's Airport Extreme wireless
    Plesae change it to AEwifi
    2. Take off all security for a test.
    3. Set channels.. I am guessing the computers are only using 2.4ghz, so set 11,6, 1 in that order.
No improvement.. just put the security back to WPA2 Personal with pure alphanumeric password..
Try and test new drivers and use no firewalls on the computer.. ensure that the computer is correctly set for home network.
Beyond that it is just incompatible.

        Mar 31, 2015, 07:59:25 PM    Self test - passed

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
    5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
