WRVS4400N IPSec VPN Advanced Settings Found
v1.00.16 - O.K. This is weird. I have had no luck with getting the Advanced Settings Button to do anything until now. I simply got lucky. The Advanced Settings Button works only when accessing the router menus using https locally on the LAN. Basically, https://192.168.1.1 Then find the IPS VPN Tab and press the Advanced Settings Button and wala there it is. When accessing the router using http://192.168.1.1, the button does nothing. Weird to say the least. Even with this, all of the certificate management buttons and menus are still missing. Did anyone find the certificate management menus and buttons in an earlier firmware version than v1.00.16?
I dug a little further and found that the CGI under the http portion of the program simply does not call the advanced web page. To get around this, simply type in: http://192.168.1.1/vpn_adv.htm
the vpn_adv.htm file is the web page that is hidden by the CGI.
If anyone can find any of the certificate manage web pages, I bet they are on the WRVS4400N as well ... only missing from the top menus / CGI. If you find one, please send it to me.

I have this installed at a client site but refuse to mess with it as I finally got it working OK. it's still on firmware 1.00.15 I noticed .16 came out just about a week ago and I don't have a "spare" 4400N to test that on so I am leavign it all alone for now.
I do have some issues...mostly the VPN stuff, but like I said, I finally got it working so I'm not touching it.
Time to order another one and setup a dev environment......

Authentication in advanced settings for pop outgoing is grayed out.
I'm not able to send outgoing emails while at work and our network admin told me to use authenticated smtp, port 587. So I went into advanced settings, found the Outgoing using port 587, but the Authentication button is grayed out. Any ideas how to enable it or why it's grayed out?
That didn't work for me either. I couldn't enter a password into the Outgoing Settings field and have it "stick". And I couldn't choose an authentication method.
But now I think I fixed it.
I've been syncing this account with my Mac for a while, and I'm just now getting this server in question to actually use authentication; I'm not sure, but I think I've been doing SMTP over TLS unauthenticated for a while now.
I believe what's happened is that there's some crud deep in my iPhone that's "stuck" on unauthenticated for that mail account. And I think the key is either the "Description" field or "Address" field.
That is, I removed and recreated my account from scratch, on my phone. The account previously had the Description "Personal", and when I recreated it, I once again gave it the description "Personal". This did not solve my problem. I could not get an Outgoing Settings password to stick, and I couldn't choose any form of Authentication.
Now I've recreated the account again from scratch, this time giving it a different Description and Address. Now I'm getting results.
But I'm getting even stranger results. I changed Description and Address, but the Host Name and User Name stayed the same--that must be the "key" in another way. Because now both of the accounts (I didn't destroy the original account settings) have the same description and same everything else.
Anyhow, I think I've cleared out whatever was getting stuck. The result is that if you have a brand-new iPhone, and you point it at a box that asks for AUTH, the iPhone will go through all sorts of hoops and jumps and detect what you have, and allow you to enter a password. But if you get a setting stuck in your iPhone somewhere, you won't be able to undo it without some effort. In my case, making a new mail account with a different "Description" and "Address".
And I've now cleaned everything up--I've removed one of the accounts, so now I only have one (can't tell which one was which, they were both identical), changed all the settings back to exactly the way they used to be, and I can still have an Outgoing Settings password, and choose Authentication. And outgoing mail actually works too... -
Ipsec VPN site to site, best settings for optimal data transfer
I have a ISA570 at work and have set up an ipsec VPN site to site connection with my router at home which is a RV180. I'm trying to do large backups from my office to my home storage. Can you tell me what are the most efficient settings as far as the VPN connection is concerned to optimize the transfer rate? Also any settings that I may make on my Windows 7 workstation at work. I'm transferring from a worstation to the terrastation that I have at my home.

I have had no problems setting up other features of the wrvs4400n, even though it does dumb things like display the actual passwords for VPN Client Accounts in clear text, but when trying to configure the IPsec VPN portion of the wrvs4400n I keep getting strange -if not buggy- behavior as I try to adjust the settings.
Has anyone else run across any of these??
1) On the main IPsec VPN screen under "Key Management", I set PFS to "Enable", but PFS keeps setting itself back to "Disable" whenever I save settings.
2) Likewise the "Pre-Shared key" and "Key Life Time" keep reseting to blank and 0 respectively after saving settings. I get a warning that they are not set unless I reenter them so they are not being set and not displayed.
3) The "Advanced VPN Tunnel Setup" window which one must go to if one sets the "Remote Security Gateway Type" to "Any" in order to change "Local Identity" to "Name" (as instructed by another warning) does not seem to want to save ANY configuration information. So one can not change "Local Identity" to "Name", nor "Authentication", "Group" etc. and have them set when it opens again.
I notice that "PFS" is Always set to "Disable" in the "Advanced VPN Tunnel Setup" window, and I guess this is because it is not getting set in the main "IPsec VPN" window.
I notice also that I have to enable pop-ups in my browser for the "Advanced VPN Tunnel Setup" window to appear, even though this is not necessary for other windows like the logs, or help.
I'm using the latest firmware v1.00.13 and have tried setting IPsec up using Firefox and Safari, on windows, and Mac with the same result. Any ideas??
thanks!It could have either been a problem flashing the firmware the first time or some bad behavior because of the pop-up window getting blocked and somehow messing with the internal config, but after I re-flashed and reset the router to defaults I've had no problems... Thanks!!

Cisco ASA 5505 site to site IPSec VPN with RV220W issue
I have a ASA5505 connected to RV220W through IPSec VPN. When using SMB to transfer large file, the ASA5505 will show error message:
CTM ERROR: Invalid input parameters, ctm_get_scb_prot_stats:1561
The error message from the debug crypto engine. When the message show, the speed of the transfer will slow down quickly, and even no data can be go through between ASA and the RV220W. But the IPSec SA and the IKE SA is active, and can ping the inside network in both site.
Both ASA5505 and the RV220W has been updated the latest firmware. I have surf the Google but no such related issue found.
Any suggestions on where to look would be much appreciated.

The strange things happened in RV220W shows the IPSec sa is expired, but the ASA5505 IPSec and IKEv1 sa is active. Inside both site internal network can ping to other side, but cant transfer file through Windows SMB. It seems when I transfer over 4GBytes of file, it will start happening and required clear IPSec and IKEv1 sa so that the VPN tunnel will start up again.
I am already surrander for this issue...... -
Windows 8 and IPSec VPN issues
I have a number of customers that leverage the Cisco IPSec VPN. I can connect to the VPN without any problems but when I attempt to RDP, that fails. I have no RDP or ping or anything. Here are some more symptoms of the issues that I find odd:
Anyconnect works just fine
Fortinet VPN clients work fine
Sonicwall VPN clients work fine
Cisco IPSec VPN client is the only one affected
Cisco IPSec VPN client worked fine for months then just decided it was no longer going to allow RDP or ping
I have duplicated this issue on a half dozen or so laptops
This is on a Windows 8 laptop but I believe I have also experienced this on Windows 7
Just to clarify, the IPSec VPN does succesfully connect. But nothing else works after that. I do understand that AnyConnect is the direction that Cisco would like for people to move towards. Unfortunately, I have quite a few customers that are leveraging the IPSec VPN. I have been through a number of laptops in the last year and every single laptop had a working Cisco IPSec VPN for months....then one day it would just stop passing RDP.
Please somebody tell me that there is a workaround for this. I have played with the IP settings for the Cisco Systems virtual adapter in my network and sharing center. I've modified the binding order. I've compared a routeprint from a working laptop to mine....I'm not sure what else to do. I've uninstalled ALL VPN software and only reinstalled the Cisco VPN. So far the ONLY fix I have found is a clean install of Windows and that solution sucks.Doing a little more homework on this and I noticed that the tunnel details show no bytes sent or recieved and no packets encrypted, decrypted, or discarded....everything is bypassed. My coworker (who is on Windows 7) is able to launch this VPN and connect to the customer's servers without issues and the tunnel details show all of the appropriate data.

SL IPSEC VPN Server Not working with Windows 7
I have an airport extreme and a mac mini w/ snow leopard server.
I am able to VPN into my network from my iPhone, MAC 10.6.2, & Windows XP. I am not able to VPN into my network from 2 different Windows 7 machines. I am able to VPN from a laptop running Windows 7 if I am on the LAN but can't vpn from the WAN. Any suggestions?

I used these instructions to config my windows 7 client:
General Tab:
put your server's address of resolvable name (vpn.yourserver.com)
Security Tab>Advanced>Settings...:

Microsoft CHAP Version 2 -only thing checked!

let's look if there is a cure.....
this device is recognized under every other system than yours, right?
if so maybe your software is misconfigured or your usb connection is bad....
how to determine?
try other devices like an usb-stick
check bios if legacy usb support is on
check device manager (device plugged in) if it shows any information like a //dev_xxxx
if your usb port is ok
goto device manager and remove all usb devices (show hidden devices)
reboot and let the system determine the hub etc
plug in usb-hdd and see if it will be detected - keep in mind: you dont have to load a driver for a usb storage device by yourself
if the usb ports are ok and your hdd is recognized by other systems maybe it's time for a recovery of your system....

Hello Experts,
I managed to establish an Ipsec VPN connetion with 2 RVL200s between 2 Locations. So far so good.
It is possible to access network a form network b with WinXP PCs, but it is not possible to reach network a with Win7 PCs.
Whereelse it is possible to reach network b from network a from either type of windows pc.
And when you ping from the RVL200 (on both sides) to the other net you always get no replys to your ping.
Settings on both RVL200s are equal, except for that one is going over ADSL (network a) and the other is behind a cable modem (network b).
I have de-activated Firewalls, no change. Routing Tables look fine for me. IPv6 is de-activated in Win7 PCs. I have added static routes, no change.
Does anyone know where else I could look for a solution?

You state that you can reach from both sides of the routers and ping xp machines but not windows 7 machines? The router won't be restricting traffic based on operating systems on the lan, so I would look at possible firewalls on the windows 7 machines, anti-virus, nortons, anything that does packet inspection. -
Outbound UDP 500 Connections Causing IPSEC VPN Headache
OK, I've got an issue that I need to toss out to the experts here. I set up an ipsec remote access profile on an ASA 5510 and was having connection problems (never completes phase 1). After some investigation, I saw that my connection was hitting the external interface and translating to an internal interface on UDP 500. I didn't have any NAT entries that would allow this action so upon investigation I see I have three internal outbound devices that are all being sourced and destined on UDP 500 (one of these devices was the translated destination for my ipsec vpn).
I'm at a loss as to how to get around this (other than shutting the machines down); I've tried enabling ipsec-pass-thru inspection and cleared the xlates for those devices but they still connect back up. Any suggestion on something else to try? I could possibly try creating an anyconnect profile, but it's more the point that I want to figure out why this is happening instead of just circumventing the issue.

I believe to have found what is wrong or at least is not right. There was no 'nonat' rule in place for the protected traffic on our side. Although I find it strange that the tunnel is ok once it's setup from the remote end. They have no problems accessing our network here. I would expect them to have issues if the 'nonat' rule is missing, but they do not. It's only after a couple of days that the tunnel goes down from our end and stays up at the remote end, which of course leads to them not being able to access our network. SO hopefully this is it.

If I am an IPSec VPN user…
I can use Jabber to another IPSec VPN user that is connected to the same ASA appliance.
I can’t use Jabber to another IPSec VPN user that is connected to the different ASA appliance that I am connected to.

Unfortunately, I do not have access to the ASA logs nor would I be permitted to turn on the debug settings asked for above. I might be able to get the logs but it will take awhile and I suspect they wouldn't be helpful as this ASA supports thousands of clients, therefore, separating out my connection attempts from other clients would be difficult.
I can, though, do whatever you want on the Linux router. Looking over the firewall logs at the time of this problem, I don't see anything that looks suspicious such as dropped packets destined for the Windows client.
As I said in my original post, I'm not a networking expert - by any means - but I am willing to try anything to resolve this. (But I might need a bit of handholding if I need to set up a wireshark andor tcpdump.)

I can use Jabber to another IPSec VPN user that is connected to the same ASA appliance.

Inbuilt cisco IPSEC vpn client and KeyLife Timeout setting...

I am having issues with the in built cisco vpn client on the mac, I am currrently using Mac OSx 10.7.4
I have a Fortigate 200B device and have setup the IPSec VPN settings to have a keylife of 86400 seconds.
However the expereince I am having with the mac clients is that after about 50 minutes the users are being asked to re-authencate to the VPN...
When checkin the debug logs I can see that the peer (mac client) is setting the phase 2 tunnel key lifetime to 3600 seconds which is 1 Hour...
Usually in IPSec a re-negeotiation process takes place about 10 minutes or so before the key expires..
My question is where are the VPN settings kept in the Mac... I know it uses Racoon for the IPSec exchange of key and so I would like to tweak the VPN profiles so that the mac sets the lifetime of the key to 86400 instead of 3600 by default...
Also want to be able to set logging to debug mode for the Racoon application on mac clients.

Setting up IPsec VPNs to use with Cisco Anyconnect
So I've been having trouble setting up vpns on our ASA 5510. I would like to use IPsec VPNs so that we don't have to worry about licensing issues, but from what I've read you can do this with and still use Cisco Anyconnect. My knowledge on how to set up VPNs especially in iOS verion 8.4 is limited so I've been using a combination of command line and ASDM.
I'm finally able to connect from a remote location but once I connect, nothing else works. From what I've read, you can use IPsec for client-to-lan connections. I've been using a preshared key for this. Documentation is limited on what should happen after you connect? Shouldn't I be able to access computers that are local to the vpn connection? I'm trying to set this up from work. If I VPN from home, shouldn't I be able to access all resources at work? I think because I've used the command line as well as ASDM I've confused some of the configuration. Plus I think some of the default policies are confusing me too. So I probably need a lot of help. Below is my current configuration with IP address altered and stuff that is completely non-related to vpns removed.
NOTE: We are still testing this ASA and it isn't in production.

Need urgent help in configuring Client to Site IPSec VPN with Hairpinning on Cisco ASA5510 - 8.2(1).
The following is the Layout:
There are two Leased Lines for Internet access - 1.1.1.1 & 2.2.2.2, the latter being the Standard Default route, the former one is for backup.
I have been able to configure Client to Site IPSec VPN
1) With access from Outside to only the Internal Network (172.16.0.0/24) behind the asa
2) With Split tunnel with simultaneous assess to internal LAN and Outside Internet.
But I have not been able to make tradiotional Hairpinng model work in this scenario.
I followed every possible sugestions made in this regard in many Discussion Topics but still no luck. Can someone please help me out here???

Neither Adding dynamic NAT for 192.168.150.0/24 on outside interface works, nor does the sysopt connection permit-vpn works
Please tell what needs to be done here, to hairpin all the traffic to internet comming from VPN Clients.
That is I need clients conected via VPN tunnel, when connected to internet, should have their IP's NAT'ted against the internet2-outside interface address 2.2.2.2, as it happens for the Campus Clients (172.16.0.0/16)
I'm not much conversant with everything involved in here, therefore please be elaborative in your replies. Please let me know if you need any more information regarding this setup to answer my query.

Thanks again for your help, got it working. Actually the problem was ASA needed some time after configuring to work properly ( ?????? ). I configured and tested several times within a short period, during the day and was not working initially, GUI packet tracer was showing some problems (IPSEC Spoof detected) and also there was this left out dns. Its working fine now.
But my problem is not solved fully here.
Does hairpinning model allow access to the campus LAN behind ASA also?. Coz the setup is working now as i needed, and I can access Internet with the NAT'ed ip address (outside-interface). So far so good. But now I cannot access the Campus LAN behind the asa.
