WS-X4306-GB - Catalyst 4500 6-port GBIC Module & FC Tape Libraries
WS-X4306-GB - Catalyst 4500 6-port GBIC Module & FC Tape Libraries
I have several Tape Autoloader Libraries from Dell which have Fibre Channel interfaces. I have loop switches that these connect to today. I also have a Catalyst 4506 with a WS-X4306-GB - 6-port GBIC Module. I would like to use the X4306 as a loop switch. Some of the libraries can also connect via point-to-point FC.
Can this be done? If yes, how do I start in making this happen?
Thank You.
Sorry but the Catalyst 4500 does not support Fibre Channel connections on the WS-X4306-GB (or on any card). It's strictly an Ethernet switch. Reference
To mix and match Ethernet and FC interfaces, you'd have to be on a new platform like the Nexus 5k series - specifically the UP (Unified Port) variants.

Optical Fiber connection between GBIC module and SFP module
Hi
I am in need of help.
I have a 3750 24TS-S, 2 port SFP, switch at the edge. And i have a 4507R switch at the Distribution layer. In 4507 switch I have WS-X4515 Sup IV supervisor engine with 2 GBIC Port and also have WS-4306-GB 6 port GBIC module. I am using WS-G5486 Single mode connector, LX/LH tranceiver to connect to this port.
This is the scenario.. i want to know is it posible to conect one end of the fiber cable to connect to a SFP Module ( 3750-24TS-S, 2 Port SFP) and other end ( WS-X4515 Sup IV supervisor engine with 2 GBIC Port or WS-4306-GB 6 port GBIC module) at the WS-G5486 Single mode LX/LH connector ?????
Plz let me now asap.. i need to give a solution imdtly.
Thanks & regards
JacobDiscussion is never a problem ....;-}
The issue is that the signal is "too loud" and is distorted (or, more correctly, is so loud it overloads the receiver).
The operational envelope for nearly every receiver of any kind includes a bottom number (too weak to hear) and a top number (too loud to understand).
As an example, think about an system where you have a hearing aid that would let you hear someone speaking in a normal voice from 100 feet away ... then having someone scream the same words into the hearing aid from 6 inches away ... the sound would be distorted and you would have difficulty understanding them ... after a while, you'd begein to go deaf and eventually, it would sound normal (until you became completely deaf).
So, what you need to do is look at the transmitter power, and the envelope/range of acceptable power the receiver can hear.
Normally that difference is the optical budget ... given the loss numbers of the media between the two, you can determine if you have enough power to make the trip.
In a Lab environment, you still have to hit the receiver's budget number, but from the other end (the "too high" side).
If you know the transmitter puts out X, and the receiver can accept from Y to (X-50), then you need to add enough attenuation to get X down to (X-50)or lower (but still more than Y).
When you have a transmitter powerful enough to drive tens of kilometers, putting one two meters away from the receiver will pretty much guarantee a burnout (unless you install optical attenuation).
Good Luck

Trunking on Nexus 5000 to Catalyst 4500
I have 2 devices on the each end of a Point to Point. One side has a Nexus 5000 the other end a Catalyst 4500. We want a trunk port on both sides to allow a single VLAN for the moment. I have not worked with Nexus before. Could someone look at the configurations of the Ports and let me know if it looks ok?
nexus 5000
interface Ethernet1/17
description
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk allowed vlan 141
spanning-tree guard root
spanning-tree bpdufilter enable
speed 1000
Catalyst 4500
interface GigabitEthernet3/39
description
switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
switchport trunk allowed vlan 141
switchport mode trunk
speed 1000
spanning-tree bpdufilter enable
spanning-tree guard rootThanks guys, we found the issue. The Catalyst is on my side and the Nexus is on the side of the hosting center. The hosting center moved his connection to a different Nexus 5000 and the connection came right up. We dropped the spanning-tree guard root.
It was working on the previous nexus when we set the native vlan for 141. So we thought it was the point to point dropping the tags.
The hosting center engineer this it might have to do with the VPC Peer-Link loop prevention on the previous Nexus.
Anyway it is working the way we need it to. -
QoS trust dscp or cos on catalyst 4500
We have a 4510R with Cisco IOS Software, IOS-XE Software, Catalyst 4500 L3 Switch Software cat4500e-UNIVERSALK9-M), Version 03.05.02.E RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1).
I want use qos trust dscp or qos trust cos on the interface conected to other cisco switch or wlan controller.
The current IOS version, do not support qos trust dscp:
SW(config)#interface gi10/16
SW(config-if)#qos tr
SW(config-if)#qos trust ?
device trusted device class
extend Extend trust through a connected device
SW(config-if)#qos trust device ?
cisco-phone Cisco IP Phone
cts Cisco-telepresence
ip-camera Cisco video surveillance camera
media-player Cisco Digital Media Player
SW(config-if)#qos trust device
What is the software that I need for this?. I tried with command lookup tool but the cat4500 do not appears. That is even new for me.
I did a search and found that, now a days you no longer have to provide the Trust DSCP command, it is by default trusted.
Went through this White Paper and excerpts are below:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-4500-series-switches/white_paper_c11-539588.html
The answer to your question comes from the following excerpt :-
"Previously supervisor engines relied on “port trust” to classify traffic; however, this does not fall into the MQC CLI construct. MQC provides a more flexible capability, i.e. all traffic is trusted by default, an administrator can change this trust state using a policy map. Another difference is the “internal DSCP” value used within the switch to place packets in the proper queue.
Cisco Catalyst 4500E Supervisor Engines do not use “internal DSCP”; rather, it relies on explicit matching of QoS values using class maps so that packets can be placed in the correct queue.
Also, note that there is no specific priority queue: it is not queue 3 or queue 1. The priority queue is simply configured within a class; therefore, it is not tied to a specific queue. One final difference is that of classification. Cisco Catalyst 4500E Supervisor Engines provide sequential classification rather than parallel. This allows the network administrator to classify traffic at egress based on the ingress markings. These markings can be done unconditionally, using a policer or using a table map. Based on these changes, QoS CLI will now be more contiguous on the Supervisor Engines as it will now have standard Cisco MQC CLI, making configuration management much simpler"

Subinterfaces - hardware limitation on catalyst 4500-X
Hi there,
We are currently building a VSS and our design has L3 subinterfaces however we have hit a major wall while trying to do the following

Create port-channel subinterface on VSS switch – Fail

Create port-channel subinterface on standalone switch – Fail
Below is the output showing that the option of a subinterfaces seems to be available, but it still doesn’t apply

I am assuming this restriction applies to this platform but other than that there is nothing specifying we can't do this. Anyone out there has hit the same issue? or can anyone confirm this is an actual platform restriction
Thank youHi,
The 4500 and 4500x series switches do not support sub-interfaces. Only 6500 series support sub-interfaces.

We have a 1000v switch uplinked to nexus 5K and Catalyst 4500 switches. I can see all the VEMs(ESX servers) connected to the nexus 5K uplink switch and everything seems working fine. However, I am not able to see the VEMs uplinked to Cisco Catalyst 4500 switch. The "show Module" command shows all VEMs connected to the nexus 5K uplink switches but not the Catalyst 4500 switches. The log file on the 1000V shows the following:
7 09:36:21 NX-1K-100 %VMS-5-DVS_HOSTMEMBER_INFO: A host with name=[IP ADD. OF ESX SERVER] and uuid=[34393232-3035-3255-5839-3430303
03537] is added to the dvs. The host is not found as a module in the VSM configuration.
If anyone have run into similar situation, plpease let me know how you handled it.
ThanksHi bharga,
I did all the checking....
1) all important VLANS including the control vlan are not blocked (No STP issue)
2) The Nexus 5K and the 4500 switch are in layer layer 2 ( They are not directly connected but are in layer two domain or no hop between them)
3) the ESX Server hosting the VSM is connected to the Nexus 5K
Here is some of the show commands that i run on the 4500 switch that is connects the ESX server to the rest ofd the network:-

Catalyst 4500 using Fiber connecting to Catalyst 3550
Hello.
My client have few units of 3550 that is using GBIC (G5484-1000Base-SX) modules.
These are connected to a Core switch 4507R-E with a 48 port WS-X4248-FE-SFP module.
I have tested the GBIC modules between 3550s using 3m Fiber cables - they are all working fine.
However, between Core and 3550 GBIC, they connection doesn't come up across the fibre.
Can i confirm that the 48-Port 100BaseX with SFP cannot connect to a GBIC modules?
How about connecting 10GB (WS-X45-SUP6-E) to 3550 GBIC modules?
Thanks for your help.Transition Networks makes a media converter (model SGFEB4040-180) that looks to accomplish what you are trying to do; interconnect a 100Mb interface to a 1000Mb interface.
4500/100BASE-FX -----> 100BASE-FX/SGFEB4040-180/1000BASE-X ---------> 1000BASE-X/SGFEB4040-180/1000BASE-X ----- 1000BASE-X/3550
I am not sure the performance impact to the network.given the significant bandwidth differences between the two switches end links. The media converter does support pause frames, so it should slow the flow.
I have never seen this solution implemented so I don't no the economics of this solution or how it will operate.
Good luck!

Nexus 5548 and Define static route to forward traffic to Catalyst 4500
Dear Experts,
Need your technical assistance for the Static routing in between Nexus 5548 and Catalyst 4500.
Further I connected both Nexus 5548 with Catalyst 4500 as individual trunk ports because there is HSRP on Catalyst 4500. So I just took 1 port from each nexus 5548, make it trunk with the Core Switch (Also make trunk from each Switch each port). Change the speed on Nexus to 1000 because other side on Catalyst 4500 line card is 1G RJ45.
*Here is the Config on Nexus 5548 to make port a Trunk:*
N5548-A/ N5548-B
Interface Ethernet1/3
Switchport mode trunk
Speed 1000
Added the static route on both nexus for Core HSRP IP: *ip route 0.0.0.0/0 10.10.150.39 (Virtual HSRP IP )*
But I could not able to ping from N5548 Console to core Switch IP of HSRP? Is there any further configuration to enable routing or ping?
Pleas suggestHello,
Please see attached config for both Nexus 5548. I dont have Catalyst 4500 but below is simple config what I applied:
Both Catalyst 4500
interface gig 3/48
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk encap dot1q
On Nexus 5548 Port 1/3 is trunk
Thanks,

Catalyst 3560 24 port-PoE switch powers on but no STAT LED and console not responding
I rebooted my Catalyst 3560 24 port PoE switch and when it turned on only the STAT LED went green the other LEDs are off. I get no response from the console port using putty and the cable I used before this happened. I tested the cable on another switch and it works fine with putty. What can I do with this switch?
This unit was purchased before I came to our company. There is no support or maint contract. I'm sure the unit is several years old...we'll call the vendor and see what they'll do..not expecting much.

Catalyst 4500-X, VSS, and SVI
Hello, everybody!
I have a proyect to implement the feature VSS, with two catalyst 4500-X, it will be the layer Core/Distribution.
So, I want integrate in the catalyst 4500X, Inter vlan routing (SVI) and vtp domain, in the layer access, we´ll have SW 3750-X with PoE.
Is possible configure SVI in my catalyst 4500-X. to separate traffic across VLANs. and the routing will be in the 4500X too. ???
My customer does not have sufficient space to mount the serie 4500E in the Rack, so he prefer the 4500-X.
Help me!
Thanks!
RegardsHi,
Is possible configure SVI in my catalyst 4500-X. to separate traffic across VLANs. and the routing will be in the 4500X too. ???
Yes, there is no different between a VSS pair and non-VSS when it comes to SVI and inter-vlan routing. It works the same way as if the 4500-X ware separate.

Catalyst 4500, scp, rcp
Does anybody know is it possible to set up a remote access to the Catalyst 4500 series switch thru the rcp or scp protocol? I want to start commands on the remote unix server. Like unix# scp -i identity -B acl.file user@catalyst:system:running-config or unix# rcp acl.file user@catalyst:system:running-config, where acl.file is the file with access-list. It's important to start commands on the remote server, not on the switch. Thanks for any advice.
Hello,
I just tried this on a Cat 4500 using tftp, and successfully changed its hostname, and added a new ACL.
The same should be true for rcp and scp.
Just remember to put "end" as the last line of the file, otherwise you will get a %PARSER-4-BADCFG: Unexpected end of configuration file message (but it still works).
This was tried on Version 12.2(25)EWA4.
Hope this helped,
Michael. -
Catalyst 4500, supervisor II+, EIGRP
Hi,
We're bought a catalyst 4500 sup II+ with image cat4000-i9s-mz.122-25.EWA4.bin
In feature navigator isn't anything about EIGRP in this image, but in CLI I may configure EIGRP.
How is that possible?
thxHi,
You can only configure the EIGRP stub on the Sup 2+. EIGRP fully is not supported on sup2+.
