WS-X6704-10GE Problem

I have a Catalyst 6509 with supervisor 720-3B and IOS 12.2(17d)SXB10. I have installed a X6704 4 port 10Gb card in slot 1 and powered up the system. The X6704 is recognised but is powered off with a message stating that it is not supported. Using show module the online daig status is unknown and the detals for the card are as follows:
HW FW Sw Status
1.5 12.2(14r)S5 12.2(17d)SXB Other
I have tried using alternate IOS levels such as 12.2(18)SXD4 but get the following error messages:
%PM_SCP-SP-1-LCP_FW_ERR: System resetting module 1 to recover from error: Linecard received system exception
%OIR-SP-3-PWRCYCLE: Card in module 1, is being power-cycled Off (Module Reset due to exception or user request)
Can someone please tell me what is wrong and if its the IOS I'm using what level I need to support the card.
Thanks

Hi Paresh,
I don't think I have any of those cards. Using show module I have the following:

  • Difference between WS-X6704-10GE or VS-S720-10G-3C 10G port

    Hi All,
We have a presales case, where the partner is asking the difference between VS-S720-10G-3C and the WS-X6704-10GE linecard . He is asking from the perspective of the performance and features comparison.
I would appreciate any information that anyone would be able to provide. Thanks for the help in advance.
    Awaiting your reply,

The following paper outlines deployment scenarios for the two cards if using them for Virtual Switch Links.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps9336/prod_white_paper0900aecd806ee2ed_ps2797_Products_White_Paper.html
    Brief excerpt:
“VSL-capable interfaces are required to create a VSL port channel. The current modules that support the formation of a VSL port channel are the 10 Gigabit Ethernet uplink ports on the Supervisor Engine 720-10G VSS (VS-S720-10G-3C/XL) and the Cisco 8-Port 10 Gigabit Ethernet Switching Module (WS-X6708-10G-3C/XL). (Refer to Figure 5.)
    Figure 5. VSL-capable Modules
These interfaces contain new port ASICs that allow the VSH to be encapsulated on each frame forwarded out of the port and also support the ability to de-encapsulate VSH-tagged frames.”

  • Catalyst 4507 Sup V-10GE problem

    Hello,
We have two Catalyst 4507 connected to two sites at the same city throught a black fiber. We use the Gigabit Ethernet ports on the Sup V-10GE to connect the fiber via Cisco CWDM.
It is the second time that the superviser enginge V-10GE is frozen; L1 and L2 are correct on the switch, the link is well connected. but the switch does not response to IP requests like ping and ssh (L3 does not work). We should reboot the switch to resolve the problem.
Why did it happen? Is it a bug of the Sup V-10GE?
    Thank you.
    Jessie Dong

When the problem is present do you have console connection? how is the proc cpu? Have you check the STP when the issue is there? Is chaging the uplink port to antoher port regain connectivity to the switch? Wihtout much more info, there no way to tell whether you are running into a bug or not.

  • Modules supported on WS-X6704-10GE line card for WS-C6509-E

We are planning to expand the local network and looking to add 10G line cards on our WS-6509-E. The confusion is over the types of optic modules that these cards support.
Can anyone advice if these line cards support all these three - namely XENPAK, X2 & SFP Plus?
    Thanks

What is the difference between these supervisor (VS-S720-10G-3C or VS-S720-10G-3CXL)
See the "XL" at the end of the part number?   If you get the regular (no "XL"), you'll only get 256k IPv4 routes.  The "XL" will allow you up to 1 million IPv4 routes.
Is these modules will work with c6509E and these supervisor  (VS-S720-10G-3C or VS-S720-10G-3CXL)
Yes and no.  Yes, these supervisor cards will work on the current chassis you've got.  But if you plan to use VSS, then your 6704 line card is incompatible with VSS.
Another thing, don't waste your money.  Firstly, the price of the Sup720 is exactly the same as the price of the newer (and more powerful) Sup2T supervisor card.
And lastly, rumours has it that the 6500 chassis is in it's "last gasp".  Personally, I'm waiting for Cisco to announce the EoS/EoL.
If you want to future-proof your investment, the potential replacement of the venerable 6500E is the 6880-X/6807-X.

  • Unusually low Rx power values ? WS-X6704-10GE (10Gbase-SR)

    Referencing...http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/modules/ps2797/ps5138/product_data_sheet09186a008007cd00_ps5455_Products_Data_Sheet.html
The Optical Transmit and Receive Specifications for this transceiver (XENPAK-10GB-SR) indicate :
Tx Power (dBm) : Max -1.2, Min -7.3
Rx Power (dBm) : Max -1.0, Min -9.9
We are seeing readings on one of these modules that are clearly well outside these ranges.
    Tx Power (dBm) : -18.6
    Rx Power (dBm) : -40.0
No interface errors or anomolous behaviour of any kind is indicated on this interface at this time.
    My question.
Without getting into the detail of what could be the potential cause of this particlar interface showing these readings (as all of the other interfaces are reading within the specified range), could I get an opinion as to what impacts, if any, we can expect to see on this interface as a result of these observed values ?
    Thank you for your inputs.

Tx power is measured from this XENPAK and must be inside the specified range. -18dBm is around 32 times less than expected. I would consider this XENPAK as broken and replace it as such strong power difference can cause errors on a receive side.
Rx power range is what is expected from the remote end. Measuring Rx power makes sense when there is something transmitting light to us and we want to confirm an incoming power does not exceed our Rx power range.

  • 7600 1 Gig to 10Gig routing performance problems

    I have a 7606 with a sup720 and msfc3
    with WS-X6148-GE-TX and WS-X6704-10GE
I am trying to send ~1.2 Gbps of traffic from the 6148 to the 6704.
I have a packet generator connected to 10 of the 1G ports each sending ~120Mbps 512byte packets. The first 3 (1/30-1/32)ports don't drop any packets but the next 7 ports (1/33-1/39) drop ~2.25% each.
I checked "show int summary" and it is reporting that packets are being dropped on the input queues.
The config is pretty much default.
I just don't understand why so much packet loss at such a low rate.
I know the 6148 is just a wiring closet blade but it's supposed to have 32Gbps bandwidth to the backplane.
Is there something I need to tune?

    Hi,
There are currently no 10/100/1000 that are 100% non-blocking (running all ports at 1000 and line rate).
    AS for the 6704, it's not quite 100% non-blocking.
"Fully nonblocking when using only two ports (2 and 4, 1 and 3, 1 and 4, or 2 and 3)
Up to 98 percent nonblocking with all four ports active when using dCEF"
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/modules/ps4835/products_data_sheet09186a00801dce34.html
The module's forwarding ASIC (there are two onboard) maxes out at about 26mpps, which equates to roughly 17Gb at 64 bytes. You get better throughput at larger packet sizes, but never quite 100%.
    HTH,
    Bobby

  • 6500's with 10GE mod

I'm about to do a data center migration and I'm replacing all of my core switching. My plan is two 6509's in the core and 4948-10GE's at the access layer to provide 10gig back to the core. I'm a little confused on the fiber connectors available on the 6500 modules. Are the 4948-10GE's able to connect to the 6500's using the WS-X6704-10GE module?
    Thanks for the help.
    Dennis

    Hi Dennis,
The Cisco 4948-10GE is shipping out with X2-10GB-LR which is 10 Km on SMF, the WS-X6704-10GE is shippped out with XenPAK 10 GE Module. You can establish the optical connectivity between the 10GE-X2 and the XenPAK Module.
You can also refer to the attached ZIP File that contains a PDF on Cisco Catalyst 4900 Series Switch.

  • VSS on 6800 using mix 10GE modules

    Hello,
We are about to set up two Cisco 6800 running VSS across them.
I have read and I quote ¨ VSLs can be configured with up to eight links between the two switches across any combination of line cards or supervisor ports to provide a high level of redundancy.¨
    Each switch come with a VS-S2T-10G(2 x 10GbE) supervisor and a WS-X6704-10GE module card.
My questions is: Can I use one port from the each supervisor and one port from each module card to create the VSLs with no issue? Please see the attached image as reference.
    Thanks!!!

    Hi,
6704 module can't be configured as part of a VSL link. There is 6708 and 6716 that support VSL.
    VSL Hardware Requirements
The VSL EtherChannel supports only 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports. The 10-Gigabit Ethernet port can be located on the supervisor engine module or on one of the following switching modules:
    •WS-X6708-10G-3C or WS-X6708-10G-3CXL
    •WS-X6716-10G-3C or WS-X6716-10G-3CXL

  • Video streaming - is Qos the answer?

We're having problem with a video stream we are distrubuting to a few users. Lately we got a lot of complaits regarding glitches/freezing in the video.
    Hardware in 7600's: WS-X6704-10GE
    Topology:
    Incomming stream<<--port channel 2G Fiber-->>7600(SUP720)<<--10G fiber-->>7600(RSP720 SVI for video)<<--10G fiber-->> Switch<<-1G RJ45->>PC
    - I've checked the interfaces on the 7600's but cant see any errors on the interfaces or output drops on the interfaces(no congestion?)
    - We're seeing TX drops from the edge switch to the pc's. Investegating the cause with vendor. But my guess can be buffer problem going from 10G to 1G?
    - We have not implemented any Qos on the 7600's however we have enabled qos to prioritize the video vlan on the edge switch.
    - Peak traffic between 7600 and edge switch is about 1G(5min average)
    - Would enabling QoS on the 7600 and do End to End Qos solve the problem? As far I understand qos will only help if the interface is congested which isn't the case here?
    - What would be the best strategy for video streaming? Would the solution be to use the CBWFQ + LLQ  for this kind of traffic or  would LLQ starve the rest of the queue's?
    Best Regards

Probably, and those drops could be the cause of your "...glitches/freezing in the video."
So, what you might want to first address is using QoS on egress edge ports to insure video traffic isn't dropped.
"...we have enabled qos to prioritize the video vlan on the edge switch."
Prioritized in what sense?  Dequeuing priority often makes little difference for typical buffers depths at gig or better bandwidths.  Priority avoiding drops, though, might be worthwhile.

  • XENPAK-10G-LR does not switch off the laser

    Hi.
We have a problem with the XENPAK-10G-LR that doesn't switch off the lasser in shutdown state, installed in 6509 with WS-X6704-10GE. The other side of the connection doesn't detects the shut.
I have checked that the X2-10G-LR disables the light, then the other side see the interface as down/down.
    What is the cause?
Any method for disable the laser?

    Hi.
We have had the same problem in 7600 (12.2SR) and 6500 (12.2SX).
I checked the realase notes and field notices, without results.
As a workaround, you can activate 'ethernet oam' to check that link is really up (if the other box supports it).
    Regards.

  • Vlan (SVI) SNMP graphs

    Hi.
We use a monitoring software to draw graphics from our Cisco 7609 router.
Graphs from physical interfaces are ok, but those from the SVI (vlans) are very "spiky".
    #show mod
Mod Ports Card Type                              Model              Serial No.
      1   24  CEF720 24 port 1000mb SFP              WS-X6724-SFP
      5    2  Supervisor Engine 720 (Cold)           WS-SUP720-3BXL
      6    2  Supervisor Engine 720 (Active)         WS-SUP720-BASE
      7    4  CEF720 4 port 10-Gigabit Ethernet      WS-X6704-10GE
Is there a way to get SVI graphs look good ?
    Thank you.

    Problem solved
The hexto bin converter i was using (vb.net) was not converting correctly, solved by manually do the conversion
Thanks to all of you that looked into it

  • Help with IPSEC? Can you apply crypto map to SVI?

    Hi All,
Got a problem with a site-to-site IPSEC vpn implementation where one end is using SVI (eg: interface vlan 10).
Does any body know if a crypto map can be applied to a SVI to bring up the IPSEC tunnel? It accepts the command but I can't pass any traffic to/from it.
    interface vlan 10
    crypto map MY-MAP
Or do you need to apply the crypto map to a physical interface?
I've gotten it working on a sub-interface (eg: interface GigabitEthernet0/0.11) but can't find any documentation that talks about applying it to a SVI and whether this will work. Anybody tried it using SVI's before?
This is to be done on a Cisco 7606 (sup720).
    Thanks.
    Andy

    Hi Jerry,
I'm not that cluey with all the hardware on the box itself, but here's what we have on the box.
