WSD discovery method in Windows 7

I've noticed on Windows 7 in the network browsing window that Windows 7 clients are listed as being discovered using NETBIOS (as in older versions of Windows), whereas Vista clients are listed as WSD.  Is there a way of changing the settings in Windows
7 so the discovery method is WSD also?  I've tried searching everywhere but I can't seem to find much information on it.  I prefer the WSD discovery because it populates the columns for MAC and IP address which is useful.

Since this is by desgin feature, I will mark their reply as answer. It could help other communities here who
have the same issue.
Thanks for your understanding.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 - Printer is on Network but not Discoverable with Typical Discovery Method

    Hi all.
    I need help! I have fought with this printer (HP Officejet Pro 8600) for about an hour. The error message I get says that the printer is on my network but is not discoverable using the typical network discovery method. I can set it up using the IP address (and will), but we frequently reset the router, and I don't want to deal with the printer everytime I do this. I figured it was something with the Windows firewall. I temporarily disabled it and tried again - nothing different. I am also running AVG free edition, but it does not have a firewall. Any help is appreciated! Forgot to add... I'm running Windows 7.

    Hi Kelly,
    The printer should be able to reconnect to the router by itself after the router is reset.  Why do you have to reset the router?  It might be part of the issue with the printer.
    There are multiple ways for the software to discover the printer.  There could be a setting in the router or even software services in the computer that are causing the normal methods to not work.
    After you reset the router, does the printer not reconnect?  The blue wireless light would continually blink if the printer cannot reconnect to the router after the reset.
    I was an HP employee.

  • Discovery Methods question

    What Discovery Method is better System or network  discovery? And why would you chose that one...
    MSB

    Well, it obviously depends on what you want to accomplish...but I would generally recommend System Discovery for most circumstances.  Network discovery (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/6a0e2b40-672f-45e1-a12d-6d403ab39780#BKMK_NetworkDisc) looks
    for just about anything with an IP address. The vast majority of CM environments are only concerned with managing Windows-based, domain joined devices, so AD System Discovery simply makes more sense.

  • How to use multi async method in Windows Runtime Component (C#)

    I want to migrate an async method into Windows Runtime Component.
    CookieContainer cc = await utility.GetCookieContainer();
    But the content of async method still contains async methods.
    public async Task<CookieContainer> GetCookieContainer()
    if (stsAuthToken != null)
    if (DateTime.Now > stsAuthToken.Expires)
    this.stsAuthToken = await GetMsoStsSAMLToken();
    AuthCookies cookies = await GetAuthCookies(this.stsAuthToken);
    CookieContainer cc = new CookieContainer();
    Cookie samlAuthCookie = new Cookie("FedAuth", cookies.FedAuth)
    Path = "/",
    Expires = this.stsAuthToken.Expires,
    Secure = cookies.Host.Scheme.Equals("https"),
    HttpOnly = true,
    Domain = cookies.Host.Host
    cc.Add(this.spSiteUrl, samlAuthCookie);
    Cookie rtFACookie = new Cookie("rtFA", cookies.RtFA)

    this.cookieContainer = cc;
    And even GetMsoStsSAMLToken and GetAuthCookies contain async methods...
    How to migrate it?

    Hi Matt,
    I'm sorry for my unclear description.
    My WinRT Component is for Javascript. If I use folloiong codes, error occurs.
    public static async Task<bool> GetInternal(string url, string username, string password)
    bool r = await AuthUtility.Create(new Uri(url), username, password);
    return r;
    The error is
    SharePointWindowsRuntimeComponent.Common.GetInternal(System.String, System.String, System.String)' has a parameter of type 'System.Threading.Tasks.Task<System.Boolean>' in its signature. Although this generic type is not a valid Windows Runtime type,
    the type or its generic parameters implement interfaces that are valid Windows Runtime types.  Consider changing the type 'Task' in the method signature to one of the following types instead: Windows.Foundation.IAsyncAction, Windows.Foundation.IAsyncOperation,
    or one of the other Windows Runtime async interfaces. The standard .NET awaiter pattern also applies when consuming Windows Runtime async interfaces. Please see System.Runtime.InteropServices.WindowsRuntime.AsyncInfo for more information about converting managed
    task objects to Windows Runtime async interfaces.
    Some articles said, Task<T> is not WinRT type and should be converted to IAsyncOperation<T>. Only stirng, int, bool, object, array of above types and some 'simple' type can be used. (The
    related article)
    Then I try to convert Task<bool>, but the codes don't work.
    Above is why I ask this question.
    If async method can be used in WinRT component directly, please let me know why I got above error.
    Thanks.

  • Error in event handler method in window

    Hi,
    I have created configuration in SEFVISU, to receive the workitem i have created a parameter in event handler method in window
    but it is throwing dump The ASSERT condition was violated, if i remove that parameter means application executing properly but i am not able to pass the unique, values please guide me.
    Regards,
    Srini.

    Hello Srini,
    are you talking about the default event handler method of the window? if so then you need to ensure that the parameter name defined in the event and passed in name are same. And also its better to go for the parameter type as STRING.
    other option would be instead of defining the static parameters in the event handler method, you can get the parameters from the WDEVENT itself by accessing WDEVENT->PARAMETERS table.
    hope this helps.

  • SCCM 2012 RC Discovery Methods all missing but one...

    I am not seeing any other discovery methods under Administration-Overview-hierarchy configuration-discovery methods other than 'Active Directory Forest Discovery'.
    I understand that there are supposed to be many more for discovery.
    Any ideas?  It appears the same from both console on server and console isntalled on workstation.

    Sounds like you've installed a Central Administration Site (CAS).
    The only discovery method available on a CAS is "Active Directory Forest Discovery".

  • Recommended imaging/cloning method for Windows 8.1 system

    Can anyone recommend a reliable way to completely image/clone a windows 8.1 based system?
    I've tried 3 different methods with mixed success:
    1. My old faithful method uses EzGIG-III, but the BIOS setting for boot configuration needs to be changed to CMS because the tool is DOS based. The cloning operation takes forever (~12 hours for my machine with a 750GB HDD that only uses 200GB). I've tried it twice. The first time I got a boot error when booting the clone, but Windows managed to automatically repair the boot issue. The second time I had no errors at all.
    2. I've tried the free version of Macrium Refect three times. First time was from a bootable USB version and I don't recall any issue. Second time was from within Windows. When I swapped the drive and tried to boot the clone, the boot failed and I got a nasty error message about winload.efi missing. I did some Googling and found a command line procedure to rebuild the missing file, which seemed to work. Third time was also within Windows and everything worked ok (I'm using the resulting clone right now as a matter of fact). Nice thing is the cloning operation only took 2 1/2 hours (compared to 12 hours with EzGIG). Also, I had trouble cloning in the opposite direction - just couldn't get it to work.
    3. Third method is the System Image utility that's built into Windows 7/8/8.1. It failed right away claiming the destination location had insufficient space for the image even though the capacity was much greater than the source. I'm working through this right now and am hopeful to get it working. The down side of this method is that two separate operations are needed; one to create the image and a second one to restore it. Also, I wonder if the image will include non-windows partitions (as in Linux dual boot).
    I'd appreciate any positive stories about successful cloning / imaging.
    Solved!

    I've had mixed results with cloning. But restoring from an image always works. If you want reliability, do it that way.

    1. That problem occurs because the perverse backup program wants to write to each partition on the drive being imaged. See this thread for the fix.
       Cant backup 8.1 using system image backup! Error 0x80780119
    2. As I said, I've found imaging to be more reliable than cloning. How often would you restore? We image all our computers daily (3am) and retain images for ten days.
    3. The image includes all the partitions on the disk - at least mine does.
    In case you want to use the built-in imaging program, I can give you a shortcut to it in Windows 8.1.

  • "location" method in "windows" object

    Hi,
    I have the following prob:
    on the app. that I'm trying to capture (with captivate 3.x),
    I'm using the javascript: window.location (the method "location" on
    the object "windows") to open a popup with content inside. It works
    well of course without captivate. But when I try to record the
    session with , the pop up will open (the function "windows.open"
    works well), but the content inside remain null (a blanck page). It
    seems that my app (when captivate is started) can't lunch the (or
    can't return the value) "windoww.location" function . Does anybody
    had this problem?
    TIA
    Renato

    Hi Renato,
    I can't say that I have seen the problem you describe, but I
    have had problems where things don't draw correctly for some reason
    or another.
    My "solution" has been to pause or stop the Captivate
    recording prior to the new window opening, then pick things up
    again once the window has displayed correctly.

  • EAP Peer Method API & Windows 8 issue

    We're using EAP Peer Method API in our project. Everything
    works fine on Vista and Windows 7 but Windows 8 is giving us some troubles.
    Our project uses native Windows WLAN API to start connection to 802.1x protected WiFi AP. For authentication we're using our implementation of EAP method (registered using regsvr32).
    Regardless of OS, setting (proper) user credentials before starting connection will result in successful connection. Problem happens when user credentials are either not set or are wrong (like wrong password).
    On Vista/Win7, you'd get a popup balloon, like on picture below, and clicking it would make EAP Host call one of functions in our EAP dll, allowing us to display dialog asking user for credentials. But on Win8, there is no popup balloon and our function doesn't
    get called. That locks us out of certain usage scenarios we've supported thus far.
    Function that I mentioned is 'EapPeerInvokeIdentityUI'
    and it is being called on Vista/Win7.
    If you need more detailed info, I'll list function
    our EAP dll exports:
       DllRegisterServer
       DllUnregisterServer
       EapPeerFreeErrorMemory
       EapPeerGetInfo
       EapPeerInvokeConfigUI
       EapPeerConfigXml2Blob
       EapPeerCredentialsXml2Blob
       EapPeerConfigBlob2Xml
       EapPeerInvokeInteractiveUI
       EapPeerInvokeIdentityUI
       EapPeerFreeMemory
       EapPeerQueryCredentialInputFields
       EapPeerQueryUserBlobFromCredentialInputFields
       EapPeerQueryInteractiveUIInputFields
       EapPeerQueryUIBlobFromInteractiveUIInputFields
    We've been doing some research and noticed that Win8's native EAP methods do show dialog to user when password is wrong, therefore we looked into related dll's exported functions and found one that seem interesting - 'EapPeerGetIdentityPageGuid'. We didn't
    find any documentation on that function though, not even function signature, so we couldn't do much with it but we suspect it might be called instead of 'EapPeerInvokeIdentityUI' on Windows 8. If we guessed right, some information about 'EapPeerGetIdentityPageGuid'
    and related functions would be great, otherwise any help about new Windows 8 behavior would be appreciated.

    Hi Ethann,
    Just a reminder for the above query.
    Looks like this is the limitation in Windows 8 where the 802.1x security prompts are integrated into network pane. Here is the link which gives a brief info on changes from win 7 to 8.
    http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles-tutorials/wireless-networking/wireless-changes-windows-81-and-server-2012-r2.html
    We are planning to implement a minimal supplicant which takes care of 802.1x authentication. So that we have full  control on authentication. Is this
    the only possible way?
    Hope you have resolved this issue. Your help will reduce our dev effort. Please guide me to troubleshoot this issue.
    Thanks

  • WScript exec method on windows server 2012

    Hi.
    A few years ago I coded an app that runs continuously on a reporting server that we have.
    It's job is basically access our ERP's software database and send emails originated from selected actions performed on the information system and provide some end of the day emails with a compilation of daily information.
    The sending email part of the app runs perfectly on my newly deployed Windows Server 2012. However, so the app can keep alive when we dont have internet connection, i rigged it with some code issuing a ping command to check if the outside world is reachable.
    And this is where everything goes south! The only message i get when the ping command is issued through the script is "Unable to contact IP driver. General Failure." This is a bummer since if use a command prompt window, the server pings perfectly.
    Previously the app ran fine on a windows server 2008 R2, so i'm guessing this is some kind of auth/security problem. However, i dont know how to fix it, hence this post.
    Does any of you can help? Feel free to ask any question you may think it would help to solve the problem.
    Thanks in advance.

    It would be helpful if you provided information about how you 'coded' this solution.  Is this running as a scheduled task?  If so, remember that the account it runs under is most likely different from the account you are running interactively.
    Check permissions.
    2012 by default does not allow ping.  You need to enable the ICMP rule in the firewall.

  • How to get the CanGoBack property and GoBack() method for windows 8 store app

    Hi Everybody,
            I m working windows 8 store app with webview. Here I have two buttons for go back and go forward. But i didn't have default  property for goback and goforward. How can i achieve this?

    Thanks Rob Caplan
    Actually I want solution for XAML.
    I achieve this by using list and maintaining the the current item position of current URL.
    See the Sample code:
    In webview loadingcomplete event track the url navigations
    private int _bacListPositionElevate = -1;
    webView.LoadCompleted += (object s, NavigationEventArgs e) =>
    _currentUri = e.Uri;
    if (_currentUri != null)
    if (_currentUri != elevateNavigationStack[_bacListPositionElevate])
    elevateNavigationStack.Add(_currentUri);
    _bacListPositionElevate++;
    Now in the back button decrease the position like this:
    _bacListPositionElevate--;
    webView.Navigate(elevateNavigationStack[_bacListPositionElevate]);
    BackButton.IsTapEnabled = (_backStackPositionElevate != 0);
    FrwdButton.IsTapEnabled = (_backStackPositionElevate < elevateNavigationStack.Count - 1);
    Now in the forward button increase the position like this:
    _bacListPositionElevate++;
    wvElevate.Navigate(elevateNavigationStack[_bacListPositionElevate]);
    imgElevateBack.IsTapEnabled = (_backStackPositionElevate != 0);
    imgElevateFwrd.IsTapEnabled = (_backStackPositionElevate < elevateNavigationStack.Count - 1);

  • Which DVD to iPod Method (for windows) has the highest quality?

    Hi everyone! This is the first thread I have started! *pats himself on back*...
    ...O.K. down to buisness...
    Does anyone know or tested which dvd to ipod conversion method is best? I have looked at most of the threads here about the conversion methods, and I was wondering which had the highest quality picture, quickest conversion time, and taks up the least memory. Feel free to post your opinions, but I feel tested responces are more helpful. Thx for your time...

    'dvd decrypter' is phenominal. all it essentially does is takes the '.vob. file off the dvd. it takes up alot of space, but the quality is perfect. somewhere on videora.com there is a link... its free too. as for a converter, ive tryed most of them, and totally preferred videora, onyl because it converts any type of file.

  • Having trouble with the renameTo() method in Windows

    Hi all,
    The below code works perfectly well in netbeans but as shown as I try to call it from cmd prompt I get issues.
    The below code is designed to move or delete log files from one area or another.
    now if i try to delete the logs from command prompt I have no problem.
    However when I tried to move the files by doing renameTo() I get a false back. And as this method seems to have no relevant error message, I am at a loss....
    Now I have checked the permissions, this is not a problem (all users can edit the files, if I can't edit them why will let me delete them?), I have checked to make sure no duplicate files exist and they don't. i have also tried to move the files to different locations, same problem. The files are definitely not open.
