WSUS b0rked

Okay guys and gals I am at a loss.
I have a WSUS SP2 running on w2k3 system that has ceased to do anything
meaningful. All of the clients are reporting in the WSUS admin console as
not being able to be contacted in X days. I have gone through every
conceivable thing I can find on technet and still it does nothing.
I've even reinstalled WSUS to no avail. I've tried things on the client,
done the browse to server http path, checked the registry, check policies,
ping server telnet server you name it. Nothing. It just mocks me.
Any ideas? I've already done the fdisk option.

what if you set up a fresh client machine or vm and point it to it, does it register or talk to it at all?
just wondering if a recent update on all your machines might have clobbered the config, or otherwise made your machines not talk to an (admittedly fairly old) server?
failing that a nice solution might be to implement ZPM instead of WSUS?

  • WSUS Repair: Can I not use a drive other than C:?

I used the wizard to move the WSUS folders from the C: drive to the SBS2008's D: drive in order to recover C: drive disk space as so many others have had to do. Now ofcourse, the system says it no longer is installed as designed and updates to domain
    computers no longer works.
There is a good TechNet article on how to "Repair Windows Server Update Services" but it assumes the WSUS directory must be created on C: which ofcourse is not what I want.
I appreciate there are SQL issues involved here, but if I simply specify D: as the partition to create the WSUS directory, substitute D:\WSUS in the wsussetup.exe parameters (from the section in that article headed 'To manually recover Windows Server
    Update Services), will this work?
    Thanks in advance
    Jerome

    Hi Jerome,
    à
if I simply specify D: as the partition to create the WSUS directory, substitute D:\WSUS in the wsussetup.exe parameters (from the section in that article headed 'To manually
recover Windows Server Update Services), will this work?
I suggest that you should follow the step “create a directory called WSUS on the C: partition” to
repair WSUS as described in this TechNet article (Repair Windows Server Update Services). It will help us to avoid unexpected issues.
    à
I used the wizard to move the WSUS folders from the C: drive to the SBS2008's D: drive in order to recover C: drive disk space as so many others have had to do.
After repairing WSUS, please refer to following article and check if help you to
move WSUS Content and Database Files to a Different Volume.

Meanwhile, please refer to following article and check if help you to recover disk space on C drive.

If any update, please feel free to let me know.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cannot publish Flash Updates Verification of file signature failed for file SCUP 2011, SCCM 2012 R2 and WSUS all on same Windows Server 2012 machine

I am attempting to distribute Adobe Flash updates using SCUP 2011, SCCM 2012 R2, WSUS ver4 and Windows Server 2012.  Everything installs without error.  I have acquired a certificate for SCUP signing from the internal Enterprise CA.  I have
verified the signing certificate has a 1024 bit key.  I have imported the certificate into the server's Trusted Publishers and Trusted Root CA stores for the computer.  When I attempt to publish a Flash update with Full content I receive the following
    error:
2015-02-13 23:00:48.724 UTC Error Scup2011.21 Publisher.PublishPackage PublishPackage(): Operation Failed with Error: Verification of file signature failed for file:
    \\SCCM\UpdateServicesPackages\a2aa8ca4-3b96-4ad2-a508-67a6acbd78a4\3f82680a-9028-4048-ba53-85a4b4acfa12_1.cab
I have redone the certificates three times with no luck.  I can import metadata, but any attempt to download content results in the verification error.
    TIA

    Hi Joyce,
This is embarrassing, I used that very post as my guide when deploying my certificate templates, but failed to change the bit length to 2048.  Thank you for being my second set of eyes.
I changed my certificate key bit length to 2048, deleted the old cert from all certificate stores, acquired the a new signing cert, verified the key length was 2048, exported the new cert to pfx and cer files, imported into my Trusted publishers
and Trusted Root Authorities stores, reconfigured SCUP to use the new pfx file, rebooted the server and attempted to re-publish the updates with the following results:
2015-02-16 13:35:44.006 UTC Error Scup2011.4 Publisher.PublishPackage PublishPackage(): Operation Failed with Error: Verification of file signature failed for file:
    \\SCCM\UpdateServicesPackages\a2aa8ca4-3b96-4ad2-a508-67a6acbd78a4\3f82680a-9028-4048-ba53-85a4b4acfa12_1.cab.
Is there a chance this content was already created and signed with the old cert, so installing the new cert has no effect?  In ConfigMgr software updates I see 4 Flash updates, all marked Metadata Only (because they were originally published as "Automatic."
No Flash updates in the ConfigMgr console are marked as downloaded.  I can't find any documentation on how the process of using SCUP for downloading content for an update marked Metadata Only actually works.
    Comments and suggestions welcome.

The Report for most of the Clients show.

I login to the client and it shows Windows is up to date.  But I look at updates installed history and now updates exist for the last 60 days.

    Hi,
Please make sure that the update files have been downloaded on the WSUS server.
Update will be available only if it has been downloaded.
Also, please check if the Network Service has the Full Control permission on the WSUS content folder.
    Best Regards.

  • Problems with WSUS over VPN

A while back we started having trouble with our WSUS server communicating with our laptops over our VPN. We've been just running updates manually, but it's become a priority to find out what the issue is so that we can resume using it to deploy other software
    packages.
We're getting the following in our WindowsUpdate.log:

Updates work perfectly when plugged into our network, and while they're on the VPN they have access to all network resources. (mapped drives, etc)
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm afraid this one has me stumped.

A while back we started having trouble with our WSUS server communicating with our laptops over our VPN.
First note here that may significantly assist in your diagnostics... the WSUS Server does NOT communicate with clients.. the *CLIENTS* communicate with the WSUS Server. So, it's not about the pathway from server-to-client, but rather from client-TO-server.
Ergo.. why can the clients not find the WSUS server when connected via VPN?
AU <<## SUBMITTED ## AU: Search for updates [CallId = {414E9C34-F810-46D5-9D6B-01001BCE24FB}]
I have no idea what/where this call to the WUA is coming from, but it's failing with a TIMEOUT error. My assumption, all other things considered, is that this is NOT a call to the assigned WSUS server. At a minimum, it's not a standard WUA detection for
    updates from a WSUS server.
    Checking Connection to WSUS/SUS Server
    WUServer = http://{servername}
    WUStatusServer = http://{servername}
    UseWuServer is enabled. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . PASS
    Connection to server. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . PASS
    SelfUpdate folder is present. . . . . . . . . . . . . . PASS
Presumably the WSUS server communication is working perfectly, but I'll have to offer that as an assumption ONLY since I don't actually know what the client is talking to since you've masked that critical information from your query. I'm also assuming this
CDT output is from a client actually connected to the VPN.
ALSO: Please do NOT post logfiles in CODE BLOCKS... it makes them impossible to read, and I HATE horizontal scrolling. Just post them as *TEXT*.
For some reason it appears as though (in the log anyway) it's trying to use a proxy. (when it shouldn't)
Are the clients configured to USE a proxy when they shouldn't be? SHOULD they be required to use a proxy on the VPN connection and they're not? I can't tell what OS version the client is, since the logs are not complete enough, but since it's -2014- I'm
going to assume it's a Vista or later client.
What's the output from NETSH WINHTTP SHOW PROXY?

  • WSUS not working completely, no MMC connect, all web services are not working

    Hello all,
I have a problem not sure what causing it or what is the source of it as I am not into WSUS that much...
    THe status is as follows:
I have 1 server 2008 sp2 RTM x64, I had WSUS 3.0 SP2 on it since a while, it was working fine until a week ago, when I started receiving the below messages in the event viewer
I have spent too much time trying to trace or troubleshoot this issue, but all I got was to check the registry and check permissions on the temp folder and other folders, I have done complete removal with the database for the old WSUS and reinstalled it
again but I got the same problem
Nothing strange and no problems happened on the server perior to this issue, it just happened...
    Any help will be appreciated
    Regards

So, in reality, this issue has nothing at all to do with "it was working; now it is not", because you've destroyed all of the evidence that would exist in a "was working; now is not" scenario. What we really have here is a NEW installation that has failed.
So, from the perspective of a NEW installation that is not working...
Are there any other roles, features, services, or applications installed on this server?
Did you install the Web Server Role exactly as described in the documentation?
Did you install the WSUS Role exactly as described in the documentation?
Were there any other roles, features, services, or applications installed onto this server
after your original (working) installation of WSUS?

Oh, well, I have red and followed the documentation exactly step-by-step on the technet library, and I can guarantee you nothing went wrong because this is not my first installation for it
When I told you about the old damaged installation and the new installation which is also failed and showed me the same symptoms as the old one, I was sure that nothing wrong with the WSUS itself, but rather it is something wrong with the environment
Answering to your above questions, the answer for all is that: that server is only used for WSUS, nothing more
Anyway, I have managed to restore the service thanks to your previous reply where you point to the CONFIG folder inside the NET framework folder, I checked the files in there, some were changed to the date I think has stopped the service, so I repaired the
    NET framework 2, and restarted
It is working fine now and syncing with the update server

  • WSUS Role Failing on Windows Server 2012

    Hi Team,
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider:
SQL Network Interfaces, error: 25 - Connection string is not valid)
When we enablling the role on WIndows server 2012, I got the error like
Instance Name Properly doest not exist
    Paramater name : ConfigurationStore
But SQL server is working fine

When we enablling the role on WIndows server 2012, I got the error like
is this question related to WSUS + SUP + CM 2012 ? If so, some help from
    here?

  • Unable to install WSUS Updates KB720211 x64 and KB2734608-x64 on windows server 2012 r2 standard

    Hi,
Am testing SCCM 2012 R2 in virtual environment. To handle Windows 8 clients, need to install KB2734608 update, which is failing.
Not able to install WSUS Updates KB720211 x64 too. The server is on Windows Server Standard 2012 R2 x64.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Hi,
Agree with Michael. KB2734608 is applied to the WSUS 3.0 SP2. If we install the WSUS on Windows Server 2012 or later, the version of the WSUS becomes to v6.
    Best Regards.

  • WSUS service failure and uninstall error 0x80070643

    Hello
I recently had a drive fail in a RAID 1 array on a Windows Server 2008 Standard SP2 domain controller. The drive was replaced and the array successfully rebuilt the drive. Our domain comprises a Win2k8 DC (which WSUS is installed on), a W2k3 DC, a W2k8 Storage
Server and various W2k, Win XP, Vista and W7 clients.
WSUS3 SP2 is installed on this computer and had been working fine. After the drive was rebuilt WSUS stopped working. WSUS is organised as follows:
The drive is divided into 3 partitions. C: contains the program files, D: contains the WSUS database and update files. E: is a system recovery partition.
After the drive was rebuilt I had a problem connecting to the WSUS console. I am logged on using the domain administrator account. I restarted the server last night in the hope that it would solve this issue. After restarting, the problem persists. When
I start Windows Server Update Services from Administrative Tools the centre pane shows a large red X and 'Error: Connection Error'. The option to 'Reset Server Node' results in the same error. The error, available from 'Copy Error to Clipboard' is:
The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.
Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.
The WSUS administration console has encountered an unexpected error. This may be a transient error; try restarting the administration console. If this error persists,
Try removing the persisted preferences for the console by deleting the wsus file under %appdata%\Microsoft\MMC\.

The event logs show that the Update Services service started 7mins after the server was restarted. This is immediately followed by an event stating the Windows Update service had started. If fails soon after and is restared automatically twice to try to

IIS and SQL are running fine as far as I am aware. I also have Sophos Enterprise Console installed which uses SQL to store it's data and that is working fine.
After a bit of searching around the 'net I thought the easiest solution would be to uninstall WSUS, leave the database and update files in place and then re-install. I ran the uninstallation procedure from the Server Manager, but because the service is not
running, and even after starting the service, uninstallation fails:
Windows Server Update Services: Removal failed
Error: Attempt to un-install Windows Server Update Services failed with error code 0x80070643.  Fatal error during installation
I saw a reference to the online article located here:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/sus/archive/2008/11/05/how-to-manually-remove-all-of-wsus.aspx but the article states it is out of date and I did not want to make a bad situation worse by following the instructions.
Can anyone help me with this, please. Ideally, I would like to be able to keep the updates as downloading them again will consume a substantial amount of our monthly allowance. However, if the best thing is to remove the entire installation, then I will
    ahppily go with that, too.
    Thanks.

I'm experiencing this issue, but haven't been able to resolve it with the steps in Lawrence's post (and, another thanks from me for another detailed post from Lawrence!)
It's a 2008 box which had a relatively new WSUS install that just stopped working - not sure why.  Unable to figure out why it had stopped, I tried to Remove the WSUS role, but that failed with the error above.
During the manual uninstall steps above...
    (1) Using Windows Installer Cleanup Utility only showed the Windows Internal Database, not WSUS.  I removed
    that.
    (2) Removed %ProgramFiles%\Update
Services - other resources not present
Reinstall has now failed with this error:

Would anyone on the thread have suggestions for what I might be able to do, to wipe the slate clean with the Internal
    Database on this box?
The WID is not used for anything else, but there is other production software installed, (using SQL - not relevant, just
mentioning) and reinstalling the OS is not an option.

  • What is the best way to export and import updates between WSUS servers for specific KB's with environments that have different data sets?

We are under strict regulations and monitoring at my company. Because of this, we have to define what updates are being installed during a patch cycle by KB Article. Two production networks and one test network. The installed updates have to be the exact
same in the test environment, run for a few days with no problems, and then we install them in our production networks. The issue is, not all of the software in the environments is identical.
I need to figure out a way to take failed/needed updates from production that are unapproved, export that list so I can approve all of those updates in the test env.. Then once I approve those and any other needed updates in test, I need to be able to export
all approved updates from the test env (which includes the needed ones from production) and import those approvals in production.
    How can this be done?
    Thanks!

the easiest way will be to use a single wsus infrastructre for all your environments.
Tis blog article explains how to duplicate the approvals over groups:

  • Win 7 PC freeze and block network access for other PC on same switch during windows update from WSUS

    Hello,
It's been a problem for me for a long time now, but the last time (today) I found 3 PC on 2 different switches that block all the network on this 2 switches during the update.
I have a Domain with 80 PC with Win 7 (32&64bit) that takes the updates from the WSUS server that is configured on a Win2k8 r2. The system works well from 2 years from now but sometimes cause this errors that make me look like a dummy in front of angry
employees. If one of the PC get freeze , it will cause lost of connection on all the PC on same switch, and i have to find the blocked PC, remove from network, restart switch and hope that they will came back on.
Does anyone experienced this problem? Any help will be appreciated
    Thank you!
List of updates for today below

    Hi
Thanks for your response, yes I understand that the result is a Broadcast Storm and yes I have the cheapest switch on market :/.
The interest fact is that on one PC, I changed everything and keep only the old HDD and on last updates yesterday it was one of the blocked one too. So this make
me doubt that is something wrong in software on that PC. I don't have any third-part programs except browsers and all have Genuine Win7
The only investigation remained is what happens during the update process?
    Is WSUS involved in something?
And another thing is the fact that some of the PC are cloned, but I have carefully changed the SID
    Thank you for your support

  • Migrate WSUS server from 2003x86 to 2008x64, new hardware, use same name and IP address?

Searching through the WSUS forums and reading the TechNET migration documentation, I have bits and pieces of information to make this a smooth transition...I think. I have a plan in mind but
would like the communities input on what I am thinking before moving forward and having it blowup in my face :). <o:p></o:p>
    I have the following currently:<o:p></o:p>
A single WSUS 3.0 SP2 server, running on Server Win2003x86, using the default WID (susdb.mdf) on the same server. I have SQL 2005 Express installed on this server as well for other services
but this has no bearing on the WID correct?<o:p></o:p>
What I would like to do:<o:p></o:p>
I have a new server (a much better one) that I would like to move WSUS on to, that will be running Server Win2008x64 (I have to setup first). <o:p></o:p>
Steps that I would like to follow:<o:p></o:p>
    1. I will go through and setup this new server with all M$ updates etc... under a new name (ex. wsusnew) and DHCP acquired IP address and then power it down. <o:p></o:p>
    2. Get on my current WSUS server and backup all current WSUS settings, groups, DB etc... to a network location for temporary storage. Then power it down.<o:p></o:p>
    3. Delete the current WSUS server computer object in AD, DNS entry I will leave because my intension is to give the same IP address to the new WSUS server.<o:p></o:p>
    4. Start the new server, static assign the IP address from the old WSUS server to this new server and then change the name of (wsusnew) to the old servers name, which should be ok sense I deleted
the AD object in step 3.<o:p></o:p>
    5. After the obvious restart, the new server will have the same name and IP address as the old server. <o:p></o:p>
    6. Now that the new server is up (with same settings name/IP as old server), I will then go through and install the WSUS role on the server and restore my WSUS information.<o:p></o:p>
    Questions:<o:p></o:p>
    1. Step 2 above, is it possible to do this, without making replica servers? I kept reading about this as I was researching doing this, I would rather just copy the DB and folders and simply
put them in-place on the new server.<o:p></o:p>
    2. Step 6 above, restoring of the data, what is the proper way to do this in the scenarioI described? <o:p></o:p>
Thank you to anyone who can provide me some information.
    Jeff

Thank you for the reply, I will follow and let you know. Proabably be next week sometime before I'm able to try though. So look for a reponse then. Thank you again.
    Jeff
    OR...
You can use the much more simple, much more reliable, and much more proven method of:
Install new server as a replica of the old.
    Replicate.
Configure new server as upstream server.
    Point clients to new server.
Turn off old server after all clients have redirected to the new server.
For everybody that has tried the backup/restore the database procedure described above, they have encounted complications of one form or another.
WSUS has a built-in and fully supported comprehensive replication capbility. use it! :-)

  • Setup WSUS - Now My External Website Cannot be Accessed via Domain Machines

    Hi all,
I recently set up a WSUS server for my company so I can manage updates to domain computers. I got it working and each domain computer now looks to the server (192.168.0.101) for updates. In addition, I have a DC on this machine as well which has DHCP and
    DNS setup on it too.
After I installed WSUS, Windows set up a IIS server so it could send out updates to computers. Unfortunatly, local domain (prorepmktg.com) computers stopped being able to access our external website (found at http://www.prorepmktg.com) this is hosted by
a 3rd party and is not a part of our network. I assume this is a DNS issue, but since it is also probably connected with WSUS, I need some help being able to allow access to our external website without disrupting any WSUS functions.
I apologize if this issue is simple to fix, but I am stretching my knowledge of DNS and WSUS here. I am running Windows Server 2012 R2.

I have a DC on this machine as well which has DHCP and DNS setup on it too.
    I am running Windows Server 2012 R2.
This is your very first challenge. Have you researched the implications and requirements for installing WSUS on a Windows Server 2012/2012R2 Domain Controller?
Unfortunatly, local domain (prorepmktg.com) computers stopped being able to access our external website (found at http://www.prorepmktg.com)
I'm fairly certain that the mere act of installing WSUS and/or IIS would not have impacted your ability to access external domains.
Does this issue ONLY affect THIS external domain or ALL external domains?
If only THIS external domain, then it also begs the question of what you configured in DNS to allow your internal clients to get to that external domain.
Also relevant is this question: What is the Active Directory Domain Name of your internal domain? I'm much more inclined to think this issue began when you installed/configured DNS, not when you installed WSUS.

  • Cannot open Language settings from Tile view, and unable to install Language packs from WSUS.

    Hi all,
I have a bunch of Windows 2012 R2 servers that have been deployed from a syspreped image where the language has been defaulted to "en-GB", rather than the default "en-US".
I also have a WSUS 3 server running on a Windows 2008r2 machine. This tells me that a number of language packs are required by these 2102r2 machine, namely:
KB2839636 - English (United Kingdom) Language Pack
KB2839636 - English (United States) Language Pack
KB3012997 - English (United Kingdom) Language Pack
KB3012997 - English (United States) Language Pack
These have been approved to be installed on the 2012r2 machine, however, running Window Update on the machines shows nothing. Opening the Control panel, then navigating to "Add Language", then "options", shows no additional updates.
The I tried to search and run the languages control panel directly from the Windows Tile view by simply typing "language" and clicking the 'Language' option in the search results, but then get the following error dialogue box:
    [Window Title]
    C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Packages\windows.immersivecontrolpanel_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState\Indexed\Settings\en-GB\Classic_{bf782cc9-5a52-4a17-806c-2a894ffeeac5}.settingcontent-ms
    [Content]
Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
The issue I have here is that I am logged on with the Domain Admin profile, but the path above refers to the local admin profile - however the file listed has full permissions for all 'Administrators'.
    So I have two questions:
How should the Language pack updates get installed from WSUS?
How do I fix the problem with trying to open the Language option direct from the tile search view?
    Many thanks
    Chris

    Might try these ones.
