WSUS Contents on CM 2012R2
We have been running CM 2012 R2 - CU2 for about 8 months and over the last 30 or so days, my WSUSContents is 70G which is almost 50% of my total drive space. I have doubled checked everything I can think, WSUS is being configured via SCCM site
SUP settings. what can I do to fix this!
I have 2 Seconday Servers, both have SUP, installed and configured via CM, these servers only have a couple of Gigs of usage for the WSUS.
I do monthly Cleanup within the WSUS console!
Cam in to the office after the new year, my Content store is now over 120Gigs. It consist of Alpha Numaric Folders 00 though FF, the contents of each folder is a series of files that appear to be GUID based in name with .CAB, .EXE, .TXT. On investigation
of a few of the TXT files, all appear to be some form of Microsoft update, the few I check consited of updates for IE 11, and Silverlight.
Just so I'm clear, my Configmanager install is supposed to be managing this, and this was working well untill a few weeks ago, nothing has changed other then MS patches. The WSUS cleanup Wizard completes with no Errors, and gives a status of;
unused updates deleted: 0
unused update revisions deleted: 0
Computers that ahve not Contacted the server Deleted: 0
Diskpace Freed by Deleteing unused content files: 0mb
Decliend expired updates: 0
Declined Superseded updates: 0
this is what I would expect, I guess I'm going to pull the SUP from Configmanager, effectivly uninstalling WSUS, I'll Manually delete the Content and start over, but I am worried that shit is going to cause bigger issues. not to mention my updates
will need to be re-deployed!

Best Practice to clean up WSUS content no longer needed
I have been researching this for days and probably have about 10 hours invested in trying to come to a conclusion and now want some feedback from this group. Below you will find everything I think you might need about my current configuration. I originally
installed my first WSUS server in 2006.Over the years I added new products as needed, changed to express files (seems to have been a bad decision), unselected products no longer needed, and when version 3 came out began running the cleanup wizard monthly.
I have never declined any updates myself and only approved those showing as needed. I watched my content grow to about 65 GB then decided to migrate to a new server. I followed this procedure which worked very well:
http://exchangeserverpro.com/how-to-move-wsus-30-to-a-new-server
After the migration I tested a round of updates and everything was working fine. Then I added Windows Server 2008 (only have one server with this OS) and SQL Server 2008 R2 (only have one server with this OS) products and was amazed when my content went
up to over 100 GB. I decided to remove those two products since only one server needs them and I could update it direct from MS instead thinking it would be easy to recover the space. Was I in for a surprise. No real easy way to do that. From my research these
seem to be the options to do a good clean up on all unneeded content. What do you suggest as the best way for me to proceed?
Option 1: uninstall and re-install fresh
Option 2: reset the content following this procedure:
http://blogs.technet.com/b/gborger/archive/2009/02/27/what-to-do-when-your-wsuscontent-folder-grows-too-large.aspx
Option 3: reset the content following this procedure: (I tested this on my old server and steps 1-4 took about 90 minutes)
1. Decline all previously approved updates. (Yes, all of them. Even the ones you want.)
2. Run the cleanup wizard -- this will remove files in the WsusContent folder.
3. Change the approval of all DECLINED updates from declined to "Not Approved" (and apply inheritance).
4. Run the cleanup wizard again -- this will decline all expired updates.
5. Re-approve needed updates. Content will be re-downloaded.
I do plan to remove the express files option first to reduce the amount of space needed for storage. If you see anything else in my config that should be tweaked please let me know. Thanks for any and all feedback. I appreciate you taking the time to read
this and respond.
My configuration follows:
1 Gbps switched network infrastructure with 10/10 fiber internet access
WSUS – current environment – 1 physical server also used as a file share server for user files
Windows Server 2008 Enterprise (x86)
Dual Intel Xeon 2.8 Ghz
2 GB Ram
1 Gbps Nic
136 GB hard drive for DB and WSUS Content files (currently DB=1.5 GB, Content = 108 GB)
WSUS Server version: 3.2.7600.226
Using the Windows Internal Database (I do have a SQL Server 2008 R2 server available now)
128 Computers in 13 groups manually assigned but computers are directed to this server via GP
(all Servers and 90% of workstations are current on updates through last month)
3189 Updates installed/NA
139 Updates needed
919 Updates with no status
Configuration options:
Update source – Microsoft
Products – Office 2003, Office 2010, Windows 7, Windows Defender, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows XP (previously selected but no longer needed: Office 2002/XP, SQL Server 2008 R2, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2008)
Classifications – critical, definition, security, service packs, update rollups, updates
Update files and languages – store locally, download only when approved, download express installation files, English
Automatic approvals – above classifications for test group which includes one computer with each of the following OS’s: Windows 7, Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows XP
After those machines are tested then I approve and install needed updates for the server group (8 machines total) which include Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows XP
After those machines are tested then I approve needed updates for all computers and let the users install themHi Lawrence,
How did you go with creating the FAQ?
Shortly after this thread was last active, I was acquired by SolarWinds, and shortly after that we created PatchZone.org. I've published a lot of this "FAQ" information as blog posts to that site. If you know of anything that's missing, please let me know.
It seems that finding definitive information on doing "proper" maintenance on WSUS is still hard to find and conflicting.
I don't know about "conflicting"; the process is pretty straight forward. But it has been hard to find. Truth is, until a couple of years ago it wasn't even required, but the voluminous number of updates now published in the catalog make it necessary. I posted
a series of blog articles at patchzone.org addressing this very issue.
Here in Australia the majority of businesses are on download limits with ISPs, so we have to be very careful about what we do with cleaning up WSUS, as it can lead to expensive excess data charges!
Cleaning up WSUS will **NEVER** lead to excessive data charges; failing to properly administer and manage the server absolutely will do that!
If you decline the updates that are no longer needed in your environment, isn't there a risk that, should somebody join or re-join an old computer to the network, the computer will never be identified as needing potentially critical updates? Would it be
a better option to change approved updates, that are no longer needed, to unapproved?
Absolutely! A critical observation, in fact. This is why only updates that are
superseded should ever be declined. Updates that are NOT superseded should not be declined, but merely left in a NotApproved state so that if a computer is introduced to the network that requires one of those updates, you would be able to readily determine
that fact.
Surely this would mean the update will still be cleared out after running the clean-up wizard, but, should somebody attach or reattach an old computer to the network it will still be identified and targeted for the correct updates?
Actually, no. Only if you explicitly decline an update, or if the Server Cleanup Wizard declines an update, will the files associated with that update be physically removed from the filesystem. If you merely remove the approvals, the files previously downloaded
will remain. This, then, brings attention to the conditions under which the Server Cleanup Wizard will DECLINE an update. In order for the Server Cleanup Wizard to decline an update it must either be expired or superseded. Furthermore, superseded updates must
be NotApproved, the replacement update must be Approved, and the superseded update must have been 100% Installed/NotApplicable for at least 30 days.

The WSUS content directory is not accessible.
Did somebody recently try to relocate the WSUSContent folder? or change the ACLs?
Here are the relevant questions:
What is the actual physical pathname of the WSUSContent folder?
What is the pathname configured in IIS for the /Content v-dir?
What is the pathname configured in the registry value "ContentDir" in HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Update Services\Server\Setup?

Migrated WSUS from 2008R2 to 2012R2 - WID errors and Win7/2008R2 machines don't connect
Recently migrated from 2008R2 WSUS to 2012R2 WSUS via a very troublesome migration (see this thread for details: http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/535378-wsus-replica-no-computers-updates-listed?page=1#entry-3541584 ). But I was finally able
to get the migration to work, db moved and set up, sync'd w/MS, etc. Yet for some reason none of my 2008R2 servers or Win7 machines connect to the new WSUS server. Also, which is puzzling, is the actual WSUS server itself doesn't connect in to
itself.
This is what I see on my PC's WindowsUpdate.log file:

I'm also seeing a bunch of MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID errors in event viewer. They all are talking about the susdb file that
WAS initially associated with the WSUS install. That was prior to my changing over to SQL2014express to get things to work...it looks as if it never fully cleared itself out. That file is no longer in the Windows\WID folder,
yet there are still other files in there...is there a way to remove MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID and this association with susdb file?
I think this is also the reason my SBE backup jobs are failing on my Hyper-V server...because there are backup job errors on this server referencing the SQL##WID account...
errors 18210; 3041; 1 WIDVDI; 8229 VSS; 2 vmicvss; 17204
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
ThanksHi,
DeploymentAction='Installation' or IsPresent=1 and DeploymentAction='Uninstallation' or IsInstalled=1 and DeploymentAction='Installation'
and RebootRequired=1 or IsInstalled=0 and DeploymentAction='Uninstallation' and RebootRequired=1"
RebootRequired=1 this means the server is pending restart.
errors 18210; 3041; 1 WIDVDI; 8229 VSS; 2 vmicvss; 17204
Is VSS enabled on the drive which WID stored? Run “vssadmin list writers”, check if there is any errors under wid writer. Or you can disable WID vss writer service.
is there a way to remove MSSQL$MICROSOFT##WID and this association with susdb file?
When you removed WID feature, delete the susdb and susdb_log files and then reinstall.
In addition, the method referred in my last reply is also worth trying. And I forgot we should patch WSUS 3.2 with
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2734608
Hope this helps. -
Misplaced wsus-content folder on new replica server
Hi,
I have setup a new replica server.
The procedure is place the exported content (WsusContent) on the new replica server.
For some reason I misplaced the content folder directly under D:\ and not under D:\WSUS.
I also already imported the database with wsus util command.
On the wsus master the replica server is already visible and I have pressed synchronize on the replica server.
Can I still move the WsusContent folder from D:\ to D:\WSUS\WsusContent?
Shall I first remove the D:\WSUS\WsusContent or
just overwrite?
Are these thing possible or how would you do it?
Thanks a lot,
Kr,
JoeriHi Lawrence,
Currently al my info about the current running replica is under D:\WSUS
D:\WSUS
UpdateServiceDb files 2,83 GB
UpdateServicesPacakages 0 kb
WsusContent 117 MB.
This means the existing data in my system is 117 MB.
The exported content is under
D:\
UpdateServiceDbFiles (not used)
UpdateServicesPackages (not used)
WsusContent 145 GB (not used)
What I read about is that wsusutil is to move existing data in WSUS that's my 117 MB to another location.
That's not what i want to do .. i want to move the 145 GB to the 117 MB folder -> D:\WsusContent to -> D:\WSUS\WsusContent .
Can you tell me how to do that?
A copy paste of the data will not work ? What do you think?
Joeri -
Hi i have installed wsus 3.0 sp2 on windows server 2008 R2,
When i did the initial synchronization i can see WsusContent folder empty & SUSdb.mdf file under UpdateServiceDBfiles is growing bigger. I need to export update metadata so that i can import it in internal wsus servers.
I have two isolated domains one in external network and one in internal network. I need to export update metadata from external server to internal server. My external wsus external is only for downloading updates i need to deploy updates in internal
wsus server. So experts guide me
To export metadata
C:\PF\Update Servers\tools> wsusutile.exe export export.cab export.log
and do i need to copy the wsuscontent folder or do i need to export using backup utility.https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc720486(v=ws.10).aspx
You must ensure to correctly copy all subfolders and files within \WSUScontent
If you will do this manually, ensure that you don't copy the \WSUScontent folder itself UNLESS you can preserve the permissions entries on the destination.
One way to avoid such problems, is to use a backup utility which you are already familiar with (or if you aren't familiar, get somebody who is familiar).
You should also consider if the metadata export will be very large, that you have applied the latest updates for WSUS to the WSUS servers (because there can be export failures if your metadata is too large)

WSUS Downstream server not downloading updates
I have a windows 2012R2 wsus server setup running wsus and getting updates fine from Microsoft Updates. We will call this server A in this example.
I have a downstream server that is windows 2012r2 and has wsus installed. We can call this server B. It is configured to use "Update Source" and point to A to get its updates. SSL is not being used.
Server B says it syncs fine with no errors. However, when i look in the content folder I see the folders (0A, 2A, 2F etc..) but they do not contain any files. When i run wsusutil checkhealth the following error comes up in event viewer.
The WSUS content directory is not accessible. System.Net.WebException: The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found. at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse() at Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.HealthMonitoring.HmtWebServices.CheckContentDirWebAccess(EventLoggingType
type, HealthEventLogger logger)
Any SuggesitonsWhen i run wsusutil checkhealth the following error comes up in event viewer.
The WSUS content directory is not accessible. System.Net.WebException:
The remote server returned an error: (404) Not Found. at System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse() at Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.HealthMonitoring.HmtWebServices.CheckContentDirWebAccess(EventLoggingType type, HealthEventLogger logger)
Any Suggesitons
Looks like the content store, specifically the /Content v-dir in IIS, is not configured correctly.
If so, it's also possible that the upstream server is not downloading content correctly from Microsoft. And if the downstream server cannot get to /Content, neither can any of the clients of the upstream server.
Start by inspecting the ApplicationEventLog on the upstream server for any evidence of download failures. If they don't exist, then this could simply be an issue with IIS. Verify that the /Content v-dir is configured to point to the correct location of the
~\WSUSContent folder.

2012R2-Ess. event 12072 and error 401 (not authorized) when doing checkhealth
Hello,
I installed wsus on a fresh installed Windows Server 2012R2 Essentials (german) and "wsusutil checkhealth" gives me Event 12072 and 13002
The WSUS Content Directory is not accessible (Es kann nicht auf das WSUS-Inhaltsverzeichnis zugegriffen werden.)
System.Net.WebException: Der Remoteserver hat einen Fehler zurückgegeben: (401) Nicht autorisiert.
(remoteserver gave error back: 401, not authorized)
bei System.Net.HttpWebRequest.GetResponse()
bei Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.HealthMonitoring.HmtWebServices.CheckContentDirWebAccess(EventLoggingType type, HealthEventLogger logger)
What I did:
installed server 2012R2 Essentials
did a domain migration from a 1-Server 2003 Domain to this 1-Server 2012 Domain the old 2003 server hosted a wsus server
installed wsus as a role, content directory: D:\wsus (not created before, was created automatically by wsus setup/config)
ran the wsus config, products: Server 2012 only
grant "Network service" Full Access in D:\ and D:\WSUS
grant "Network service" Full Access in %windir%\.Net\Framework\v4..\Temporary ASP .Net Files
tried to grant "Network service" Full Access in IIS-Manager > WSUS-Management > APIRemoting30 but got some "access denied" errors here, although i am administrator
"D:\WSUS\WsusContent\anonymousCheckFile.txt" exists, is empty

Unfortunately I did not find anything about this 401 not authorized in the web :-((
Hope, anyone could help me

The USERS group appears to be missing from this list. Since it is the USERS group that grants permissions to IIS_USR for anonymous access, and the /Content v-dir is an anonymous resource, almost certainly the absence of the USERS group is causing the '401'
errors. The USERS group requires Read & Execute access on the folder tree.
Also, there may be complications because this machine is a Domain Controller. Domain Controllers and WSUS on Windows Server 2012 do not play nicely together, but it would seem you're already past most of those known hurdles. However, I do find these two
references to be ambiguous:
ROESRATH\WSUS Administrators:(OI)(CI)(F)
VORDEFINIERT\Administratoren:(I)(OI)(CI)(F)
The Administrators group should have Full Control, as should the WSUS Administrators group. If this machine is a Domain Controller, then those would actually be the DOMAIN\Domain Admins group and the DOMAIN\WSUS Administrators group. But in this instance,
these two groups have different scope references: ROESRATH vs VORDEFINIERT.

WSUS Repair: Can I not use a drive other than C:?
I used the wizard to move the WSUS folders from the C: drive to the SBS2008's D: drive in order to recover C: drive disk space as so many others have had to do. Now ofcourse, the system says it no longer is installed as designed and updates to domain
computers no longer works.
There is a good TechNet article on how to "Repair Windows Server Update Services" but it assumes the WSUS directory must be created on C: which ofcourse is not what I want.
I appreciate there are SQL issues involved here, but if I simply specify D: as the partition to create the WSUS directory, substitute D:\WSUS in the wsussetup.exe parameters (from the section in that article headed 'To manually recover Windows Server
Update Services), will this work?
Thanks in advance
JeromeHi Jerome,
à
if I simply specify D: as the partition to create the WSUS directory, substitute D:\WSUS in the wsussetup.exe parameters (from the section in that article headed 'To manually
recover Windows Server Update Services), will this work?
I suggest that you should follow the step “create a directory called WSUS on the C: partition” to
repair WSUS as described in this TechNet article (Repair Windows Server Update Services). It will help us to avoid unexpected issues.

I used the wizard to move the WSUS folders from the C: drive to the SBS2008's D: drive in order to recover C: drive disk space as so many others have had to do.
After repairing WSUS, please refer to following article and check if help you to
move WSUS Content and Database Files to a Different Volume.

Meanwhile, please refer to following article and check if help you to recover disk space on C drive.

If any update, please feel free to let me know.
Hope this helps.

Updates services is downloading Current updates for the platforms I selected.
It is finding and interfacing with all windows computers are the network.
I select updates to install to computer groups but they are not getting installed.
You can see from the report it needs to install 41 updates but they are not being installed.
Why are the not getting installed?
"No events are available. This may be because the client has not yet sent the event or the events have been purged from the server. Please refer to %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log on robtruet-pc.leopold.int for details."
The Report for most of the Clients show.
0 updates failed to install.
40 updates have not been installed
0 updates have been install or not applicable.
0 updates have unknown status.
I login to the client and it shows Windows is up to date. But I look at updates installed history and now updates exist for the last 60 days.
I included the log from the client below for one day.

Please make sure that the update files have been downloaded on the WSUS server.
Update will be available only if it has been downloaded.
Also, please check if the Network Service has the Full Control permission on the WSUS content folder.

Move WSUS data base from one drive to another
Server 2012 std
Update Services
Microsoft Corporation
Version: 6.2.9200.16384
I am running out of space on the drive the WSUS_Database resides on. It is not, as I can see, under SQLServer Express. How can I move the folder to a different drive with more available space?
THX

WSUS 3.0 SP2 on Server 2008 R2 not working (no console or other access)
Hi,
In a brand new network with all 2008 R2 servers I setup WSUS. Initially I could not install the role from the Roles tool in Windows and had to install it from a downloaded file from Microsoft (which I later read is due to 2008 R2).
This ran fine for about 2 weeks, I had all the clients and workstations in groups, approving updates and installing them.. all tickety boo and then one day the console wont connect and I have not been able to get back into WSUS to do anything. I tried removing
and re-installing WSUS (both keeping the local database and then deleting it the second time) but nothing helps. My event log reports the following every 6 hours:
Event ID 13042 - Self-update is not working
Event ID 12002 - The reporting web service is not working
Event ID 12012 - The API Remoting Web Service is not working
Event ID 12032 - The Server Synchronization Web Service is not working
Event ID 12022 - The Client Web Service is not working
Event ID 12042 - The SimpleAuth Web Service is not working
Event ID 12052 - The DSS Authentication Web Service is not working
Some extra points based on what I have read:
The server DOES have .net 4.0 installed
WSUS has been removed and re-installed
All servers are 2008 R2
The server also runs Remote Desktop Services.. but aside from this is just a file and print server
Because this server (and the whole network) are brand new, standard practice is to run WSUS against the Microsoft update site and install all critical and optional updates and patches and etc..
While it was working, I can't recall installing anything that may have broken it, however typically Windows patches do not cause problems on our machines, so I do not pay too close attention to what gets installed.. Perhaps one of these updates broke WSUS?
Can anyone offer some suggestions for how to troubleshoot this and try get things moving again?
Thanks!Hi,
> then one day the console wont connect and I have not been able to get back into WSUS to do anything.
Any error message when you launch WSUS console?
You mentioned you have Kaspersky Endpoint Security software installed on WSUS server, have you configured antivirus software to exclude WSUS content directory?
If you cannot access the WSUS console and a timeout error message appears, the CPU of the WSUS server may be at, or very close to, maximum utilization, which causes the database software to time out. If the database software times out, the WSUS console cannot
be displayed.
One way of inadvertently overtaxing your WSUS server is to have antivirus software monitor the WSUS content directory. During synchronization, the antivirus software can overload the CPU.
Please ignore WSUS content in your antivirus software and check the result.

- synchronisations (link in the console) is OK with Microsoft but all packages in the WSUS section are with a red cross and when I try to download again it's KO
I Have 3 errors in windows eventviewer :
- First error : id 12072

And the wsus server configuration :OK thanks Guy, it's strange because this server has well ran in April I think
What do you do to reinstall ? you rebuild the server (create a new VM) or you delete and reinstall the role wsus ?
For information, our VM is a windows 2012 standard edition on hyper-v 2012 R3 -
Best Hardware Server Specs for Wsus to run close to 3000 Clients
Hello Team,
I am currently configuring a Wsus server 2012 for my company. I am looking forward to buy a Dell rack server and would like to take your input on what is the best server specs I could go for. I am intending to use a San-box to store Wsus content but still
would need the best spec to run it without any outage. Kindly suggest. Thanks in advance.
Many Thanks
Many Thanks KrishI am currently configuring a Wsus server 2012 for my company. I am looking forward to buy a Dell rack server and would like to take your input on what is the best server specs I could go for.
This is documented in the WSUS Deployment Guide
System Requirements article.
But the *BEST* specs you could go for would be whatever you can afford to buy .... which may also be gross overkill for a 3000-node WSUS server.
Load tests from 2007 are documented in the
WSUS Capacity Requirements article in the WSUS3 SP1 Deployment Guide. In short, for 3,000 clients you need a 1.5GHz vCPU and 2GB RAM.

Interesting 'problem' after moving the WSUS database
Firstly I have checked the suggested topics but none of them exactly describe the problem I have encountered.
(this link just gives a 'post not found page: http://blogs.technet.com/b/sbs/archive/2009/09/23/how-to-move-sdfssdfdf-content-and-database-files-to-a-different-partition.aspx)
Okay, I have a SBS2011 server running on an HP Proliant server. The server has been dunning flawlessly for the last 2+ years. At deployment the WSUS content was initially located on the D drive. Free space on the C drive has dropped to 16GB and
as a precaution I decided to move the WSUS DB to the D drive too. I stopped the necessary ISS Admin, Update and WWW services and proceeded, using the SQL server management studio, to detach the DB, I moved (copy & paste) the DB to the
new disk and attached it the the SQL SMS. Nothing seemed to go wrong there, however, when opening the SBS console I am missing half of my information. The face that the necessary icons are there leads me to believe that the service is functioning
but just missing the computer info. If I click on a computer icon I can see the correct computer name.
Is there any way to fix this without deleting and reinstalling the entire WSUS service?
Thank you in advance for your time!

Please refer to following article and check if you have moved WSUS Content and Databases correctly.
How
to Move WSUS Content and Database Files to a Different Volume
Meanwhile, please run
SBS BPA and fix relevant issues that BPA tool can find. Then monitor the result.
If this issue still exists, you may consider that repair Windows Server Update Services. Please refer to following
TechNet article.

If any update, please feel free to let me know.
Hope this helps.
