WSUS / SUP - Primary site
Hello,
In the SCCM 2012 R2 environment I manage, most of roles are installed on the same server including WSUS/SUP/MP, etc and SQL.
What is the minimum number of clients in order to use a dedicated server for WSUS/SUP ?
Also, is it possible to migrate my WSUS/SUP to another server without having to recreate my entire configuration (ADR, Software Update group, packages for the updates...) ?
Thanks for reading and for your help.
Just saw Kent Agerlund's presentation on NICConf (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7N_lEvesDc) which states something like this:
small site, bellow 2000 clients = 1 server with all roles
medium site, bellow 20000 clients = 3 servers (1 for primary site server, sql db, sms provider and end point protection, 2 for MP/SUP/DP/AppCatalog)
enterrprise site bellow 100 000 clients = 5 servers (1 for primary site server, sql db, sms provider and end point protection, 2 for MP/SUP/DP/AppCatalog and 4 for MP/SUP/DP/AppCatalog)
Just remember that those are he's opinions on how to divide the roles to gain performance with different client numbers.

hi aaa
WSUS in the same site server with sccm but we have one cas and three primary with WSUS
how much traffic will generate due to this process , as our CAS with WSUS will be in the same box and it will provide updates to downstream Servers in three primary sites. IS it good to have WSUS and site server together as we have SQL in different box for
all three primary and CAS.Hi Torsen
35000 clients with CAS 16GB memory and 300GB Hard disk same for all primary sites
Germany with 6000 clients ,norway with china with 15000 clients and UK with 10000clients
As the client wanted to Use CAS ,we have created CAS otherwise it could be standalone primary site.
CAS in China with each region having Primary site so we have three primary. -
Database instance for SCCM 2012 and WSUS on a single primary site server
I am going to install SCCM 2012 and its SQL database on a single physical server. This is going to be a single primary site server. The default SQL instance will be dedicated to SCCM 2012 with no other named instances to be added on the SQL server down
the road.
During the WSUS server role installation, there is the Database Options page asking for using (1) Windows Internal Database, (2) existing db server on this computer, or (3) an external db server.
Since SCCM 2012 doesn't share db instance with others, how should I handle the WSUS db that's going to be hosted on the same SCCM/SQL physical server? Do I really need to create a separate SQL instance just for the WSUS db?
Thanks and regards.Even though you can do it, it is the best practice to have SCCM 2012 and WSUS installed on separate instances.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh692394
When the Configuration Manager and WSUS databases use the same SQL Server and share the same instance of SQL Server, you cannot easily determine the resource usage between the two applications. When you use a different SQL Server instance
for Configuration Manager and WSUS, it is easier to troubleshoot and diagnose resource usage issues that might occur for each application. -
SCCM 2012 Primary Site Recovery - Packages not working
I recently had to recover my Primary Site due to system crashes with blue screens on a daily basis. I was running ConfigMgr 2012 SP CU 3 and as part of the process I migrated from WS2008 R2 to WS2012 R2.
After many hours of perusing the web, I found the solutions to deal with the common site recovery issues such as SSL certs, and the content validation due to an empty ContentLib folder. I also had the issue with the update source where it listed the old
WSUS 3.2 server and the new one so the Site GUID was also updated.
The issue I am currently experiencing is that packages new or old including software update packages are not working. When using the script by Peter VanWoulde it lists the Deployment State as Error. I have tried redistributing them, valdiating the content,
removing distribution points, adding in new distribution points and even recreating some of the smaller packages to test but nothing is working.
Application deployments are working without issues.

At this point I am running out of ideas of where to look.Hi Xin,
Sorry for not responding earlier but I did recover the site using the guidelines in the following article Backup and Recovery in Configuration Manager,
however there were a few issues.
I did not have a ContentLib backup so all the content had to be redistributed and validated before that worked. None of my packages new or old would work. I eventually found an article from a forum member who also initiated a Site Reset as part of their
recovery process and had no issues.
So it seems that any packages are still not working and i think I narrowed it down.
For some reason even though my DP and MP are all set for HTTPS, it is trying to access the HTTP path for SMS_DP_SMSPKG$. I am using PKI certs so this is the correct path but it should be HTTPS.

Effect on OSD if remove primary site from SCCM heirarchy
Wanna ask, just a theory question, im currently planning to decommission and upgrade my current primary site server. The process will take roughly a few days. At the same time, I also have other site system server that also acts as an MP (has MP role). So,
for the time being I would not have an active primary site for a couple of days.
Question is, during that timeframe (when primary site not available), am I able to still do OSD? Was thinking the only issue of not having a primary site at that time, my user client machine will not be able to get the latest policy
cause any new policy will be push down from the primary site right...but the client will only be able to get the old TS advertisement correct... Question as below
Does the client machine still able to run the old advert advertised to it?
Does the client machine cache the TS advert and store it locally on their machine?
All the OSD content (boot image, OS image etc) is available in the DP, so it should be able to PXE boot and execute the TS correct if the primary site is not available?
Read the net on PXE boot flow at
http://blogs.technet.com/b/pingpawan/archive/2014/01/12/deep-dive-pxe-boot-flow-for-sccm-2007-2012.aspx. Its says as below. What I don't understand is isn't the primary server is the only one that can access the DB? Don't quite get it when it says
WDS can also access the DB....?
WDS/PXE sever runs a stored procedure, LOOKUPDEVICE for the client machine against SCCM DB. If the machine is found in the DB or If there is an advert for Unknown collection, WDS signals client to proceed with the PXE
boot.Which roles are installed on the site server?

Primary site server a single point of failure?
I'm installing ConfigMgr 2012 R2, and employing a redundant design as much as possible. I have 2 servers, call them CM01,CM02, in a single primary site, and on each server I have installed the following roles: Management Point, Distribution Point, Software
Update Point, as well as the installing the SMS Provider on both servers. SQL is on a 3rd box.
I am now testing failover from a client perspective by powering down CM01 and querying the current management point on the client: (get-wmiobject -namespace root\ccm -class ccm_authority).CurrentManagementPoint . The management point assigned to
the client flips to the the 2nd server, CM02, as expected. However, when I try to open the CM management console, I cannot connect to the Site, and reading SMSAdminUI log reveals this error: "Provider machine not found".
Is the Primary site server a single point of failure?
Why can't I point the console to a secondary SMS provider?
If this just isn't possible, what is the course of action to restore console access once the Primary Site server is down?
Many ThanksYes, that is a completely false statement. Using a CAS and multiple primaries in fact will introduce multiple single points of failure. The only technical Eason for a CAD a multiple primary sites is for scale out; i.e., supporting 100,000+ managed systems.
HA is achieved from a client perspective by adding multiple site systems hosting the client facing roles: MP, DP, SUP, App Catalog.
Beyond that, all other roles are non-critical to client operations and thus have no built-in HA mechanism. This includes the site server itself also.
The real question is what service that ConfigMgr provides do you need HA for?

Configure SUSDB_log.ldf Autogrowth Size on SCCM 2012 Standalone Primary Site Server
I have configured the rest of my .ldf log files for SCCM use according to best practices by SCCM MVPs, but I have not read anywhere that states how I should go about configuring the auto growth for the WSUS database log file (susdb_log.ldf) itself.
If someone can offer some guidance here, I would greatly appreciate it.
ThanksThanks Torsten.
So after I run the first full sync, I can just use that value to set the initial size like you stated and then use some other value to set the growth rate? There is only about 1,000 clients in this organization and I want to get this WSUS db log file configured
prior to installing the SCCM primary site on the server. I have used Kent Agerlund's instructions on pre-configuring the SCCM 2012 R2 database and everything looks good there, but just wanted to know how to go about NOT using that 2TB default limit on the
SUSDB_log. What is a good rule of thumb to use to determine the file growth value? Like 2x or 3x the initial value size?

Overloaded Standalone Primary Site Server
Hi,
Some colleagues of mine are working on an account that has a Primary Site Server that is running at maximum capacity or almost maximum capacity.
Replacing the full Site server (backup restore on new hardware is not an option right now), so I was looking for suggestions to help or provide an quick fix for the medium term.
I was thinking they could offload the client facing roles like the DP and MP and maybe the SUP. But the challenges I see are
1) if the SUP changes they need to consider the problem of the clients downloading the full catalog again which could put unnecessary load on the network. So should they retain the existing SUP as well or maybe just retain the original SUP and only offload
the DP and MP
2) Offloading the MP on its own won't offload all client requests so they could consider an SQL replica on the new site server box.
Or the other solution is to only offload the SQL from the site server and retain the SUP, DP and MP?
Any other suggestions that I'm not thinking of?
ThanksFirst, define "maximum capacity". That's a completely meaningless statement.
I always design non-trivial architectures with a "client-facing" site system that hosts all client-facing roles. In this way, the primary site server never handles any client traffic. Additionally, simply creating two of these "client-facing"
site systems now gives you instant HA at the client layer as well as additional scalability for those roles.
1) A one-time hit is an acceptable trade-off for a long-term issue.
2) Yes, SQL Replicas are generally a good thing also when hosting the MPs on a site system.
Moving SQL server is more pain than its worth -- in fact, I would say that it's not worth anything:

Hello,
I have a client with a single primary site server and a CAS. It was installed for some reason, doesn't really matter now why.
They have two options, leave it up or migrate to a new Primary Site server.
The questions is, if they leave it up (It's not needed or used), what harm will it do?
Yes, I know it will make the site simpler to manage but other than that? What would compel them to go through the hassle of a migration to a new server?
Thanks!
JohnShort answer: get rid of it.
There are a host of complications introduced by having a CAS and it should really only be done if the environment demands it (massive device management count for example).
In addition to patching complication increase and SQL replication monitoring you now have to do:
1. Many roles will need to be installed multiple times. Example WSUS will be required to be installed on the CAS with a secondary on the Primary for proper functionality.
2. Some roles will be required on the CAS, some will be required on the Primary site. If you aren't well-versed in your SCCM this can be a frustrating path of discovery.
3. Then there are roles that _can_ be installed in both locations but don't have to be ... like the reporting server. This one comes down to login policies and if people will ever log directly into the PRI or just CAS box.
All these architectural complications come before the "why" is asked ... which is usually driven by one of two things:
1. In SCCM 2012 RTM, the CAS had to be installed first or you could never use it. Some clients did this to avoid potential problems. This requirement has sense changed.
2. In 2007, people used to use multiple primaries as security boundaries. With SQL replication, collections being uniform across all sites, and the general inclusion of RBAC .... this is now moot.
Basically don't use CAS unless it absolutely fits the company. It's a lot more pain than just "one more VM". -
Data Guard Failover after primary site network failure or disconnect.
Hello Experts:
I'll try to be clear and specific with my issue:
Environment:
Two nodes with NO shared storage (I don't have an Observer running).
Veritas Cluser Server (VCS) with Data Guar Agent. (I don't use the Broker. Data Guard agent "takes care" of the switchover and failover).
Two single instance databases, one per node. NO RAC.
What I'm being able to perform with no issues:
Manual switch(over) of the primary database by running VCS command "hagrp -switch oraDG_group -to standby_node"
Automatic fail(over) when primary node is rebooted with "reboot" or "init"
Automatic fail(over) when primary node is shut down with "shutdown".
What I'm NOT being able to perform:
If I manually unplug the network cables from the primary site (all the network, not only the link between primary and standby node so, it's like a server unplug from the energy source).
Same situation happens if I manually disconnect the server from the power.
This is the alert logs I have:

Do you have any advice?
Thanks!
Alex.Hello;
What's not clear to me in your question at this point:
What I'm NOT being able to perform:
If I manually unplug the network cables from the primary site (all the network, not only the link between primary and standby node so, it's like a server unplug from the energy source).
Same situation happens if I manually disconnect the server from the power.
This is the alert logs I have:"
Are you trying a failover to the Standby?
Please advise.
Is it possible your "valid_for clause" is set incorrectly?
Would also review this:

Two primary sites in the same AD site
Can I have two separate Primary sites in a single AD? I've done it in the past in a lab, but never in production. How do clients lookup services in AD? Should I set command switches on the client install to force the clients to the correct
site? Any best practices in this area?It should work. Just make sure to use different site code, no overlapping boundaries and discoveries.
For client installation point the to the right site code.
I'm not sure if it's supported by Microsoft.

So I select the install option to "Use typical installation options for a stand-alone primary site" which says it includes installation of SQL 2012 SP1 on the local server.
But then during the prerequisite checks it fails every SQL check.
Is it just me or a giant catch 22? Am I missing something here? How is this over looked if it is what it looks like? Why even have this simple install option if it can't work?Take a look at my R2 install guide. This is for a stand alone primary. As Torsten states you pretty much need SQL installed and configured correctly prior to running the ConfigMgr install - along with a few other pre-reqs.

Logical Standby & Primary site Time Diiference
Hi,
I have the one primary site over RAC configuration and one Logical standby
Site.We have configured the Logical standby for archived files. We would like to
know, how can we compute the time difference between Primary Site and Logical
Site ex. IF suppose some SCN XYZ is applying on logical standby site so when
the same SCN (XYZ) generate (time) on the primary site. We need exact time
difference between Primary site and Logical Site.
If there is any query or other method pls suggest to find out this information.
Thanks, DewanHi,
From memory, I use this:SELECT
TO_CHAR(MIN(TIME),'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') OLDEST,
TO_CHAR(MAX(TIME),'YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') NEWEST,
MAX(TIME)-MIN(TIME) DELTA FROM
SELECT L.SEQUENCE# SEQ, L.FIRST_TIME TIME,
(CASE WHEN L.NEXT_CHANGE# < P.READ_SCN THEN 'YES'
WHEN L.FIRST_CHANGE# < P.APPLIED_SCN THEN 'CURRENT'
ELSE 'NO' END) APPLIED
FROM DBA_LOGSTDBY_LOG L, DBA_LOGSTDBY_PROGRESS P
ORDER BY SEQUENCE#
WHERE APPLIED != 'YES';Regards,
Yoann.
PS: This does not work for Archived Redo Logs not yet sent to Logical Standby:

How to set security group as primary site collection admin and secondary site collection admin using powershell in sharepoint online site - office 365?
Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to set security group as admin of primary and secondary site collection using PowerShell command in office 365.
I suggest you can use the command below to set the group to site owner, then it will have the site collection admin permission.
Set-SPOSite -Identity https://contoso.sharepoint.com/sites/site1 -Owner [email protected] -NoWait
Here are some detailed articles for your reference:

Upgrade OS of Primary Site (2008 R2 to 2012 R2)
Our org has a single primary site (SCCM 2012 R2 5.00.7958.1203) and is comprised of two site systems/servers and roughly 2500 clients.
Site System/Server 1 has the following site system roles installed:
Distribution Point
Management Point
Software Update Point
Site System/Server 2 has the following site system roles installed:
Site Database Server
Reporting Services Point
Both servers are currently running Windows Server 2008 R2. We'd like to upgrade the OS of these two site systems/servers to Windows Server 2012 R2 but as I understand it, Microsoft does not support this as an in place upgrade (Infrastructure
Upgrade for Configuration Manager).
Also, while it is not absolutely necessary, it would be nice to rename the site systems/servers in the process in order to better conform to our organization's naming conventions.
What is the best process to accomplish this without any downtime to existing clients? I was thinking something along these lines...
Build out a 2nd site/servers with Windows Server 2012 R2 and the correct server names running side-by-side with the current production SCCM site/servers.
Grant the new site's MP computer account permission to modify the System Management container in Active Directory. Will this have any impact on the production environment and existing clients?
Re-install the clients from the new site that is running 2012 R2 OS.
Decommission the old site that is running on 2008 R2 OS.Grant the new site's MP computer account permission to modify the System Management container in Active Directory. Will this have any impact on the production environment and existing clients?
That will allow the new site to write information to the AD, if configured. That will only have an impact when you've got an overlap in the configured boundaries and you're using site assignment boundaries in combination with auto site assignment
of clients.
Also, if there is anything in the old environment that you would need in the new environment you can look at migrating those objects. See for more information:
