WSUS Update Configuration

Hi
Can I configure clients to download updates from the internet but report their status to an intranet WSUS server? I basically wants the intranet WSUS to control which updates clients can download, but I don't want to hold the updates on the server.
The scenario is for a small office that has high internet connection. I want to control and know the update status of all clients via the intranet WSUS but I don't want to waste storage space on updates.
Is such a scenario possible in WSUS 2012R2?
Thanks,
Omer

Yes. Discussed quite often in this forum. This is achieved by setting the option on the Update Files and Languages dialog to tell the server to NOT maintain a local content store. The absence of a local content store will force the clients of that WSUS server
to download the FILES from Microsoft.

  • WSUS Update KB2938066 and SCCM 2012 R2

Looking at the newly release WSUS update KB2938066 and wondering if I need to apply it to my SCCM WSUS component. If so, what type of impact on the SCCM clients should I be aware of?
    Orange County District Attorney

As the update is about securing and hardening WSUS and also the communication with WU/MU, I would definitely apply this update.
The client-side is going to be tricky, depending on the configuration of your windows updates. Jason did a very good post about this here:

  • Bundle to force WSUS updates

Hi all: Does anyone have a bundle/script, that they can share, that forces the installation of Windows Updates? Chris.

I'm not sure what you are asking?
If you are using WSUS, you configure WSUS via a GPO or Reg Settings.
If you are just using "Windows Update", you can only configure stuff
such as "AutoInstall", but not scheduling control.
You can download specific patches and push them just like any software
    package, they all have switches.
Then of course there is ZENworks Patch Management which has its own stuff.

  • Unable to install WSUS Updates KB720211 x64 and KB2734608-x64 on windows server 2012 r2 standard

    Hi,
Am testing SCCM 2012 R2 in virtual environment. To handle Windows 8 clients, need to install KB2734608 update, which is failing.
Not able to install WSUS Updates KB720211 x64 too. The server is on Windows Server Standard 2012 R2 x64.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Hi,
Agree with Michael. KB2734608 is applied to the WSUS 3.0 SP2. If we install the WSUS on Windows Server 2012 or later, the version of the WSUS becomes to v6.

  • WSUS updates not applying to Office 2013 Home and Business OEM version

    Hi
For some reason I cannot get WSUS updates to automatically install on clients running Office 2013 Home and Business OEM version.
    For example
If user opens any of the office 2013 apps e.g. Outlook , word etc, it prompts a message at the top under the ribbon toolbar; UPDATE NOW.
All other updates for OS are downloading and installing just fine from our WSUS server.
    What could this be?
I dont have this issue with clients running office 2003

First thing you need to do is be absolutely certain which edition of Office you have installed.
There are five editions of "Office 365" and these days, almost anything that is "OEM" is almost certainly Office 365:
    Office 365 Home
    Office 365 Personal
    Office 365 Small Business
    Office 365 Small Business Premium
    Office 365 Midsize Business
Office 365 ships with an activation code for an online management account, and authorizes the installation of the software on up to five devices. Office 365 is updated via the WEB .. ONLY.
In addition there are three editions of Office 2013:
    Office Home & Student
    Office Home & Business
    Office Professional
If you have one of these three editions, you should also have a DVD and a Product Activation Code for the SINGLE-PC installation which is licensed for these editions provided by the vendor of your computers. Office 2013 can be updated using WSUS.
Since you're getting a prompt IN THE APPLICATION to "Update Now", I believe you're looking at instances of Office 365, not Office 2013. Office 2013 (desktop) does not provide in-product prompts for updates/upgrades.

  • Laptop keeps on rebooting after windows update configuration failure due to low disk space.

    Dear all,
My laptop keeps on restarting it self due to it cannot configure the windows update. I had tried all the solutions online including boot into safe mode, however none of this works as it keeps on going back to the windows configuration screen. I had no windows
installation disc, i tried system repair and system restore, both also not working.
I know where my problems is, it is that I had turn on the quota management system in my c drive. Thus, it had limited my disk space. I suspect that the configuration failure is due to not enough disk space.
I am here to ask, anywhere i can start my windows without the update configuration step, or how did i turn off my quota management system without getting into the windows. I tried safe mode, it  still goes to the windows configuration screen and reboots
    again.
    Please help, thanks.

    Hi,
You can access Advanced Boot Options by turning on your computer and pressing the F8 key before Windows starts.
Then choose system restore to go back to a previous status if you have a restore point.

  • Using CRMXIF_ORDER_SAVE to update configurations

    Dear All,
We are using the function module CRMXIF_ORDER_SAVE from the XIF interface of CRM in order to update configurations in several Order Contracts in CRM. After run we see the configuration correctly in the IPC configuration screen when displaying the contract (Transaction CRMD_ORDER). However, when using the function module crm_config_read_ow to reread the configuration, it is missing most of the characteristics. This is corrected as soon as we open and just save the configuration from the crmd_order. This leads to the conclusion that the FM CRMXIF_ORDER_SAVE produces some instability in the database (CBASE, IPC etc?). Also, it was observed, but not always that some characteristics might disappear (lost) when we use FM CRMXIF_ORDER_SAVE even though we explicitly set values during the FM call. Does anybody had a similar situation or have try to update configuration using this FM? Please Help

    Hi Socrates,
Can you please tell how you solved this ? Can you please post me a sample code showing the fields which need to be populated for updating the order?
    Thank you

  • System update configuration issue with local repository related to machine type

    Hi,
Sorry if the issue has been posted earlier, i tried searching but cudnt find relevant post. Here is my issue:
My machine is Thinkpad R52. Type as printed on label is: 1858-CLG
While adding machine type in update retriever, I added machine type as 1858 (as it doesnt accept 1858CLG). After connecting to the support site, it downloaded all required updates onto a local(shared) repository.
I installed system update, configured it to pickup update from local (network) repository in the registry.
Now when I launch system update, it determines my machine type as 1858CLG & it connects to local repository only to display message as "No updates were found for this machine type"
Though I cud see updates if I directly connect to help center.
I think the problem is with machine type identification, not sure though.
Please advice on what I'm doing wrong. Is it with update retriever configuration or system update configuration.
    Thanks much,

Solution for me was to change status of packages from "Test" to "Active" using Update Retriever.
Since this is not documented in Best Practices (but is stated in chapter 5 - modify settings) I spent several hours figuring it out..

  • Cannot insert more than 1 WSUS update source with different unique ids

    Hello LnG
I am aware that are a whole bunch of forum threads on this error however little bit of additional help would be of great help, as I have nearly tracked this 'pain' down.

Can I rely on the last modified/created date for inactive update source and delete it off the database? in this case can I delete {BCB9D60B-2668-459B-BFFD-6DDD11AADC53}?
When i browsed to the registry location on the Central Server

Does it imply that a stale record?

  • WSUS updates folder question

My wsus update I created on my SCCM server is getting to full , so I want to move that folder to another drive. So my question is where in sccm or wsus (that is installed on the same server) do I repoint to the new location? Also since there is a lot of

  • WSUS Updates to Available and Required collections - multiple deployment packages?

Hi, I'm trying to follow various documents but cannot find a single unified methodology for how WSUS updates are now supposed to work
I am creating software update Groups and trying to keep them under 1000 updates each as they take 2 hours or so.
So i have a Pre2103, All2013, 2014January to May, 2014 June to September and starting from this month i will do one monthly
My Client base is servers or workstations. I have 2 collections - Available (DCs SQl etc that need manual intervention) and Required (everything else)
So i now create a deployment package for each group - but now i have to do that twice? Once for available collection and once for required collection? Am i missing an easier/better way of doing this?
Once these have all been set up do i then have to deploy them with an ADR? Inject them into the Gold image of my workstations?
I would like the internal WSUS to work exactly like (or as near as can be) to the way microsoft's works. EG if i take a vanilla windows 7 or 8 build and connect it to my network, it gets the GPO, installs the client then goes to SCCM and gets alll the updates
to bring itself up to date without me having to then go back into SCCM and create a specifc deployment of job or to manually send out anything.
Or will this only work when the collection gets updated and is aware of the new computer?
    Thanks

OK i'm doing this now. As in the initial message i posted, everything up til 14th October is
done and dusted. I have 4x Software Update groups. Pre2013, All2013,2014JantoMay and
    2104JunetoSept
For each of these groups, i created a Folder under the root All Software Updates", filtered
my searches and moved each grou of updates into its own folder for neatness, as well as a
    "Superseded and Expired" folder
To deploy each of these i HAD to create a deployment package for each. Only done "Required"
so far so i have 4 Deployment packages.
So, now i am going to step through what i think i need to do to set up updates released on or
    after 14/10/2014
I have no software update group or deployment package for October's releases and no ADRs at
    all.
Just a list of 232 updates in All Software Updates. I deleted expired and superseded etc.
In this view, there are 64 Assets total. 7 unknown!!? What does this even mean? How do i find
out which are unknown? In the all device list, they are either clients or not. Nothing says
    unknown!! Anyway thats for later...
    I have 2x collections. WSUS-Available (x23) and WSUS-Required (x41)
None of the 232 updates are downloaded and theres a mixture of required not required and
    percent compliant. .
I have a workstation on the domain and have run a windows update (updates managed by my
system administrator) and it says Up to date - and it takes ages.
If i change this to "Check fromo Microsoft" i get 42 important updates and 34 optional
updates available. This is my target scenario to hit from SCCM WSUS
    OK here goes.
I select all 232 updates and move them to a folder called 2014October
i go to Automatic Deployment Rules and Create a new one called WSUS2014Oct-Required
    select Patch Tuesday Template
    Collection is WSUS-Required
create a new software update group
    Auto Deploy
Released last 2 weeks - every update classification
Run on a schedule - every second tuesday
    Client local time
1hour / as soon as possible
    default/default/default
now i need to create a new deployment package. Call it WSUS2014Oct
Point it at sources and a folder called 2104October
Now i choose Download software updates from a location on my network and select the local
    drive "E:\WSUS\WSUSContent" folder
So now i have a "Required" ADR and i click Run Now
BUT now i need to do one for the Available group as well. I notice that during the ADR i
    cannot select Required or Available.
So i guess i need to suppress reboots on Servers then?
Also if i am using the same deployment package, why do i need to reselct the download
location again? its the same updates
Also, now that i have 2x ADRs the first one i created creates the deployment package and the
second ADR now points to that deployment package too so i now dont have separate packages to
    monitor
Also, after running them both i get errors and no software update groups are created. So im
guessing thats the problem as the error is 0x80070002 the file you specificed could not be
    found
also get error on the available group saying Auto Deployment Rule download failed
This is ridiculous. Why does creating an ADR allow creation of a SUG if it doesnt work.
    Very frustrated

I have specified in my customsettings.ini

  • Server 2003 R2 Crippled after latest WSUS updates

I'm posting this because I'm stuck with a problem that has affected all Windows Servers (both 2003 and 2008) that I've installed the latest group of WSUS patches on.
After installation of these updates, the server hangs on restart at "Applying computer settings...". It hangs at that dialogue for between one and two hours. Eventually if I'm patient I can get to the desktop, but the server is incredibly slow.
One of my servers can't be logged onto and is hung at "Logging off..." after I attempted to restart it through the Windows interface.
This has also affected several of my Server 2008 servers, but eventually I was able to log onto them, then shut them down, then when they started back up they seem to be functioning normally.
It appears I am able to restart in Safe Mode, so if there are any suggestions as to a fix that can be implemented in Safe Mode that is an option.
Has this happened to anyone else and is there anything I can do to get my servers back in operation?

    A little update from today.
This is a closed network not connected to the WWW so I am unable to post any config info. I have the physical server back up but the virtual server is only partly working (I have a work around that lets me log on locally).
To refresh, these are both Server 2003 R2 Ent. One is physical and is DC/AD/DNS. The other is virtual, is a web server, and is hosted on ESXi 4.1. Servers were performing normally until a group of 6 WSUS updates were applied. Once that happened and the servers
were restarted, they both would hang at the "Applying computer settings..." screen and stay there for days. Some services would still be available to the network and others were not (IIS still worked on the web server).
What I did today on the physical server:
    1. Cold booted with network adapter disconnected - result: no change
    2. Booted into Safe Mode and removed all updates that were applied last from WSUS - result: no change
    3. Booted into Safe Mode and disabled the service Network Location Awareness - result: server would complete boot up and let me log in normally, but NIC was not functioning (it's a single NIC). I was able to enable the Network Location Awareness service
but the NIC was still not functioning, no network connectivity (tried to repair through Windows, no change)
    4. Then while logged on, disconnected the network adapter cable from the NIC and plugged it back in, and then it seems the NIC started working again.
All servers, both physical and virtual, connect to a 12 port Cisco 3750 using MM fiber NICs.
On the virtual server with this problem, I did not remove the WSUS updates that were applied. I booted it into safe mode, disabled the Network Location Awareness service but it would not boot normally until I removed the virtual NIC through ESXi.
Once the virtual NIC was removed, I could log on locally, but I could not restart the NLA service. When I try to restart this service, the services.msc snap-in stops working and the server appears to partly "freeze" (example: I can change screen
resolution but the Start button does not respond).
While logged on locally and with NLA service still disabled, I reinstalled the virtual NIC through ESXi and the server re-established connectivity to the network.
At this point I can only log out, because if I restart it with the virtual NIC attached it goes back to hanging at the "Applying computer settings..." screen.
I'm not too worried about the virtual Server 2003 because we plan to move web services to Server 2008, but I still don't know why this is happening, what the relationship is to the WSUS updates that were applied (none of this happened before that), or how
to prevent this from happening in the future.
Thanks for your patience and advice.

  • PowerShell Display Title Of WSUS Updates

I am looking to publish to the application support teams in our company a list of the WSUS updates that I am about to push out to their servers. This is the script I have so far, it lists the Critical updates only:
    $ListOfUpdates = Get-WSUSUpdate -Classification Critical
    $ListOfUpdates
How do I display the Title property only for each update? I've tried a ForEach loop and tried to get $ListOfUpdate.Title, but that shows no results.
    Thank you for any help.

    Hi,
    Try piping through Select-Object:
    $ListOfObjects | Select -ExpandProperty Title
    Syntax:
    http://ss64.com/ps/select-object.html
    Don't retire TechNet! -
(Don't give up yet - 13,085+ strong and growing)
I've tried a Property with * in the results, and get this:
    Update : Microsoft.UpdateServices.Internal.BaseApi.Update
    Classification : Critical Updates
    InstalledOrNotApplicablePercentage : 100
    Approved : NotApproved
    ComputersWithErrors : 0
    ComputersNeedingThisUpdate : 0
    ComputersInstalledOrNotApplicable : 3
    ComputersWithNoStatus : 0
    MsrcNumbers : {}
    Removable : False
    RestartBehavior : Never restarts
    MayRequestUserInput : False
    MustBeInstalledExclusively : False
LicenseAgreement : This update does not have Microsoft Software License Terms.
    Products : {Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012}
    UpdatesSupersedingThisUpdate : {None}
    UpdatesSupersededByThisUpdate : {None}
    LanguagesSupported : {all}
    UpdateId : e81faa96-a4b2-40a2-a6b1-f18564acd1f8
I take it the "UpdateId" is the field I am after, but why isn't there an entry that is the same as the "Title" field that is displayed on the original search?
