WSX on Synology NAS?

My goal is to access my VMs from a tablet or a smartphone. With WSX on my Windows host machine, I managed to control them quite well (instead of using a remote control client like VNC or Teamviewer).
However, it would be easier to run WSX directly on the Synology NAS-server on which most of my VMs are backed up on a Samba share anyway, and which is running 24/7 anyway. With what CPU would that work? Is a certification as "VMware ready" (like for DS412+ and DS712+) indispensible for WSX to work?

I think it was more of a question like since the Synology is running an embedded linux kernel, if it would be able to host the WSX server guts on it, since after getting the bootstrap code, we can compile and run a good percentage of linux software on the atom d2700 dual core proc.
I guess if anyone has the time to give it a shot, please update the thread. I'm curious as well, but won't have the ability to test it for some time.

  • ITunes Match on a Synology Nas - many exclamation marks in the first row

    Hi,
I transfared my entire iTunes Libary of roughly 26.000 Songs (1.000 plus bought on iTunes) to my Synology NAS.  Now when I start iTunes on my MacBook via WiFi it takes quite some time to be ready to play. Each time I open the Library on my NAS iTunes iTunes Match updates.
iTunes looks like it's hung up, but it's just increadibly slow working in the background. Afert around 15 to 30 Minutes it's throu with it, however it shows on many songs an exclamation mark in the very first row where there's no title to it and in the column with the cloude symbole on top.
When trying to play on of these songs it says: "The Title "Nothing Changes" cannot be played, because iTunes cannot find the original. Do you want to search for it?" Then I say: "cancel", double click on the same file again a a few seconds later the cloude icon switches from exclamation mark to the download symbole and I can play the song.
Why is iTunes Match searching each time for changes in the library, even when opening iTunes three times a day...  Can I determine how often iTunes Match should update the Library?
    Thanks for help!

Is the NAS mounted when you open iTunes? If not, then of course iTunes can't find the music files.

  • How do I connect my Synology NAS to my AirPort Extreme base station?

I'm considering replacing an Apple AirPort Extreme base station with my current 5 year old router.  I would appreciate if someone could tell me how the AirPort Extreme differs from any regular router.  I do not have any OS X devices, but I have a lot of iOS devices.  If my understanding is correct, I can set up the AirPort from an iOS device.
Also, I need to know how I would connect my Synology NAS system to the AirPort Extreme network via an Ethernet cable.  I would need to be able to acces the files on the NAS through Windows clients.  My Synology NAS currently has a web interface....would I still be able to access that web interface with the AirPort?
Thanks for all your help in advance as I am VERY new with networking devices.

I would appreciate if someone could tell me how the AirPort Extreme differs from any regular router.
The AirPort Extreme is a combination router, wireless access point, and Ethernet switch. It also provides both external USB hard drive and printer sharing. So, it is not much different than most other routers on the market today. The one main difference is how you administer it. Unlike most other routers that employ a web-based administration interface, the AirPorts use a dedicated utility, called the AirPort Utility.
I do not have any OS X devices, but I have a lot of iOS devices.  If my understanding is correct, I can set up the AirPort from an iOS device.
Yes. There are versions of the AirPort Utility for OS X, Windows, or iOS devices.
Also, I need to know how I would connect my Synology NAS system to the AirPort Extreme network via an Ethernet cable.  I would need to be able to acces the files on the NAS through Windows clients.  My Synology NAS currently has a web interface....would I still be able to access that web interface with the AirPort?
Your Synology NAS would connect to the AirPort Extreme pretty much the same as for any other manufacturer's routers. That is, you would connect it to one of the available LAN (opposing arrows) ports on the Extreme. You would still use the same web-based interface as before.
Note: When connected to an Ethernet port, the NAS would still function as usual. The AirPort Extreme would not provide any file sharing functionality when connected in this manner. All file sharing features would be the responsibility of the NAS device.

  • Location is not available to mapped network drive in Windows 8 using Synology NAS

    Original Thread:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-files/location-is-not-available-to-mapped-network-drive/ca7eac5c-0e3d-494b-b488-e245978e4db9
I have recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 standard edition. I have come across a problem when using the option for mapped network drives. Under Windows 7 I would normally map a network drive (Synology NAS) and I could access all files, copy and paste, install
apps, and link media, all from within the mapped network drive. However, under Windows 8.1 I have come across a couple of problems.
    1. When I try to copy a file from my "Mapped Network Drive" to the C:\Drive (OS Boot Drive), I get the following error,
"E:\ is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. if the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or internet, and then try again. If the
location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted."
However, if I copy a file from the "NETWORK/Network Location" the file copies just fine with no problems. And, If I also copy a file from a "Added Network Location" the file also copies just fine with no problems. And, if I copy a file from
my "Mapped Network Drive" to my D:\Drive (non OS Drive), the file copies just fine with no problems.
    2. When I try to install apps from my "Mapped Network Drive" they will sometimes install and sometimes not (I am also choosing the option to run the programs as Administrator). Again if I try to install using either the "NETWORK/Network Location"
or an "Added Network Location" the apps install just fine with no problems.
    3. When I link media (music or videos) from my "Mapped Network Drive" they will work but once I reboot they no longer work as if they have lost the file path or link of the original source location.
    4. When I use FireFox (browser) and I set my default download dir to my "Mapped Network Drive" it will work once originally set it but after I reboot, it no longer works. However, again if I set the default download dir to either the "NETWORK/Network
Location" or an "Added Network Location" the default download dir works fine even after reboot.
While I am able to access my network drive using any of the three options, "Mapped Network Drive", "NETWORK/Network Location", and "Added Network Location" but only "NETWORK/Network Location", and "Added Network
Location"appear to be reliable. Tbh I would prefer to be able to use my "Mapped Network Drive" in Windows 8 as I have been able to under Windows 7.
    More info:
I currently have UAC set to "Never Notify".
I also have Windows 8.1 installed on three different systems and all of them give me the same exact problems. One of the systems is a completely clean install with no 3rd party apps installed.
Just so its clear I am able to access the "Mapped Network Drive" but unfortunately this method of access appears to be unreliable in Windows 8 but in Windows 7 it works flawlessly.
If I map a network drive from another pc running windows 7 or 8, I can access and use the mapped drive with no problems. This problem appears to be related to the Synology NAS devices and I have researched the Synology forums but only found one thread about
    the problem, here:
    http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=76687
I have searched several forums and attempted to pick the brains of my local computer shops for any incite on this problem but I have been unable to find a solution/fix.
Any help resolving this is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Based on your description, we can temporarily disable the firewall to see whether the issue persists.
For this issue seems related to the Synology NAS devices, in order to get professional help regarding the product, we can contact the vendor support to see whether the issue
    can be fixed.

  • Windows 8.1 to Synology NAS (DS2413+) - SMB 20MB/s but HTTP 100MB/s?!

    Hello all,
Using the normal Windows 8.1 file sharing (SMB) on a high-end laptop with a mapped drive to a shared folder on my new Synology NAS (DS2413+), I get approximately 20MB/s speed... which is so slow the NAS is pretty much useless in my office as we need to
move terabytes of data and don't have much time to do it. If I transfer the exact same file from the same laptop using the Synology's web interface "File Station" (HTTP), the speed is approximately 100MB/s! We can live with 100MB/s. File Station
is really not an option for us though because we need the Windows file sharing stuff like mapped drive letters.
The laptop is plugged directly into the NAS with a network cable... there is no switch involved. I can replicate this behavior consistently - 20MB/s using Windows file sharing (SMB) and 100MB/s using File Station (HTTP.) I've tried everything I can think of
on the laptop after a couple days of troubleshooting and could really use some help. Hopefully someone else has run into this and solved it?
Some of the troubleshooting stuff I've done includes deleting the network adapter on the Windows 8.1 laptop and reinstalling it, to make sure I hadn't screwed up any default settings... nothing changed with the speeds, but I think that's a moot point because
transferring files is 5x faster with HTTP than SMB, so the network connection itself is fine. I have also enabled SMB2 on the NAS and confirmed with the PowerShell cmdlet "Get-SmbConnection" that SMB2 is being used.

    Hi Mysticron,
As we have issue in use SMB, please take the following steps to fix this issue:
    1. Deploy High-speed Networking Features
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4872
    2. Enable Receive Window Auto-Tuning
    3. Disable SMB Signing
For more information about SMB, please refer to the following article.

    Hope it will be helpful.

  • Time Capsule vs Synology NAS

    Hey everyone,
So my current set up at the moment is a Mac Mini with a 3TB external hard drive hooked up for my iTunes library and a 1TB external hard drive used for Time Machine backups for the Mac Mini and 2 Macbook Pros.
I can't decide which would be better to use a Time Capsule or a Synology NAS for the following:
My iTunes library to share to my Apple TV, and other iDevices.
Time Machine backups for all 3 computers and 2 iPhones and 2 iPads
And possibly a file sharing location for use with OS X Server.
And Caching location for app downloads used with OS X Server
What device do you think would be better to use.

Is your mini running OSX server now??
If you plan to install a computer running Server, then I would work out that setup..
This is a "don't quote me" but when you use a server.. you don't want the files to be on network drives.
ie using a server and using network drives (either TC or Synology) means you have competing requirements.
Server should have local disks so it has full control over permissions etc.
Synology in particular is designed as a server replacement.. you don't use a small server plus a synology. You can use TC but only as TM backup location and router.
    For your bullet points.
My iTunes library to share to my Apple TV, and other iDevices.
The Synology would be better.. but you still will need a computer running. Home serving of iTunes must be done via a computer.. therefore your library is located in the wrong place. The built in iTunes in the synology.. is really ??? Sorry cannot say much until I get it setup and running.. !!
Time Machine backups for all 3 computers and 2 iPhones and 2 iPads
Any will do as TM target. iOS devices backup to iTunes or iCloud.. There is no TM for iOS. And it will need a real iTunes.. not synology itunes.
And possibly a file sharing location for use with OS X Server.
And Caching location for app downloads used with OS X Server
You are using the Synology as dumb storage. A USB drive plugged into the OS X Server computer will be faster, cheaper and more reliable. You are effectively buying two servers and bypassing on of them to simply use its hard disk.. pointless.

  • HT4352 Hi, my media is stored on a synology NAS, can Apple TV access the movie folder there?

    Hi,
My media is stored on a synology NAS. I use a Samsung Smart tv and stream media content form the NAS to the tv. The annoying thing is I cannot rewind /forward movies, which seems an unsolvable problem. This is why I consider purchasing an Apple TV. My question now is, can Apple TV be linked with my NAS so that I can stream movies form there to the tv via the apple box?
    Many thanks for your replies

    no it don't support nas
it only support a computer running itunes with a shared itunes lib
that computer could store it's media on the nas but the appletv only see the computer

  • Which Synology NAS for wireless use?

I want to buy a 4 bay Synology NAS to attach to my Airport Extreme. It will serve most of my devices wirelessly: MacBook, a Windows notebook, Apple TV, and varied media players, maybe Time Machine for my Mac. Which model is enough for a wireless connection?
I assume the DS412+ is overkill; the network isn't fast enough to do it justice. That leaves the DS413 and the DS413J.
    Which model would you recommend?
What kinds of transfer speeds can I expect?
I assume the bottleneck is the Airport Extreme. I'm hoping that this gets upgraded to 802.11ac soon, so would that warrant the DS412+? Should I get the DS412+ to futureproof my set up? (I might even wire my house with CAT6 one day.)
    Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The AirPort MAC address is the one to use when limiting wireless access by MAC address.
Do include the computer MAC address to be certain you can still connect to the router via wired Ethernet cable in case the wireless network becomes unavailable.
I fully configure my router with a wired Ethernet connection before turning on any wireless access.
That way, the router is never visible and unsecured until you've completed your configuration.
And when complete, be sure to save the router config file. My D-Link writes the config to my local hard drive.
It's a pain to re-enter all those MAC addresses from scratch if you have to reset the router to an unconfigured state. At best, you can simple reload the saved config file.
At worst, having a screen print of the permitted MAC addresses and device names makes re-entering the info manually much easier than running around the house or office trying to locate the MAC addresses of all the phones, pods, tablets, game systems, and printers!
From a security standpoint, filtering wireless access by MAC address doesn't absolutely guarantee that a determined hacker with unlimited time and a 'sniffer' can't ever get in, but a casual thief simply looking for free WiFi will keep looking for an easier target.

  • Aperture and Synology NAS 212j

Hi everyone. I just bought a Synology NAS (2x2tb HD) which I plan to use with all my media (music-photos-videos) so I can access it through a mac mini server, connected to my living room tv. Concerning my photos, I have them all in a Macbook Pro (400Gb library) working with aperture 3, all managed files stored within the Aperture Library on the MacBook.
What I was planning to do is, while keeping my macbook as it is, (with all photos and aperture library stored in it, as a back-up), create a new aperture library on my mac mini and point it to the masters file located at the NAS.
I already placed a copy of all my masters in the NAS and I can actually access all these pictures once the NAS DiskStation is mounted on my wired network.
I then tried to copy all the folders and files inside the aperture library icon (except the masters), and paste them on the Mac Mini's Photo folder so that I could launch Aperture (option click) and chose to open that library.
The problem is that I get an error message: "There was an error opening the database for the library '/volume/photo/vacationeurope2012.aplibrary".
The solution I am looking for is how to keep my library and masters on my macbook and, at the same time, create a "copy" of that same library, where the library database would be stored in the mac mini and all the files (masters+projects) on the NAS.
I am now trying something new, which is to transfer the copy I have on a external HD of the whole 400Gb Aperture library and place it the MacMini. I'd then open aperture and make it relocate the masters, pointing them to the Synology DiskStation.
Any other ideas would be greatly apreciated!!
    Thanks
    Gustavo

    Hi Gustavo,
Be careful with what you place on your NAS because it is not HFS+ formated, and that means that some of the information that Mac OSx needs can't be stored on other file systems.
I currently own a QNAP NAS and I also wanted to move my iPhoto, iTunes, etc Libraries onto the NAS, but before I did so I looked it up a little bit and it seems to not be that good idea unless you purchase, of course, yet another Apple product: Time Capsule or Airport Extreme.
On the other hand, I would also like to stream videos to iPads and iPhones in my household. For that, you really need a powerful CPU. State-of-Art 2-bay NASes feature Atom processors and they choke on large files...
I may start looking into migrating my current setup and go for a Mac Mini (with enough horsepower for video transcoding) with a Time Capsule attached to it.
Man, Apple works flawlessly and I do love them, but they are sooo incompatible with every single other thing out there...

Following error message 'The item “iPhoto Library” can’t be moved because “10.0.1.3” can’t be modified' pops up, when I'm trying to copy my iPhoto library to my  Synology NAS. Any thoughts what I need to do in order to succeed?

Would you rather recomment me to change to another programme like to iphoto to store and work with my photos?
I would use the NAS for documents and other data that do not need a library with database files inside. For iPhoto a small portable drive that you can plug in directly would be perfect; you can get one for 79$ http://mac-portable-hard-drive-review.toptenreviews.com/western-digital-review.h tml
Before you try to copy your iPhoto library anywhere, make sure it does not have any inconsistencies, that could prevent copying. Run a rebuild, using the First Aid tools. See this post by Old Toad on how to do it: Re: iPhoto version 8.1.2
The item “iPhoto Library” can’t be moved because “10.0.1.3”
That error message is very typical for copying between incompatible file systems. I get this error message usually when I try to move iPhoto libraries or Aperture libraries to drives with MS Dos (FAT) or unix formatting, or when some of the image files inside the library contain ethnic characters (Umlaute), have very long file names, or the filenames contain other special characters.
Do you have any other large data sets that you could try to move to your NAS instead of your iPhoto library?  Movies, Music? Then move these first to have enough working space, when you try to move the iPhoto library. If you are running out of space, it will be difficult for the OS to move large amounts of data at once. That will need working space.

    What means "Error 17"?
    Any idea what went wrong?
    Hope you can help.

That's the problem with using a 3d-party NAS with Time Machine; it has it's own software that's supposed to interact with OSX, and when something goes wrong, it can be very hard to sort out just what and where the problem is.
First, make sure that model is fully compatible with Time Machine on Lion (some are, some aren't), and install any software/firmware updates Synology has for it.
Second, make sure the names (of all odd things) of your Mac and network aren't too long and don't contain any special characters, per #C9 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Third, make sure you're following Synology's instructions exactly.

  • Time machine will not backup to Synology NAS DiskStation.

I own a MacBook Pro8.2 (15-inch, Late 2011) running on Mac OS X 10.7.5. Time Machine backups go to a Synology NAS DiskStation, which works fine with my wife's MacBook Pro (17-inch, Late 2011) also running on Mac OX X 10.7.5. If I try to backup the 15-inch MacBook Pro, I can get started but down the road I get the following message: "The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup dish". Try several times again but it always fails again. Does anybody have a good suggestion how to solve the problem? I am puzzled.

Most likely, the backups are corrupted.  Try to Repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
