WTR54G Possible Compromise

Could anyone answer this for me.  I changed the default name of the router, used WAP security with a very complex word number combination to generate the SSID, and enabled MAC Address filtering to allow only my laptop to access the network.  All of a sudden I was unable to access the network or the internet from my laptop.  No matter what I did, the wireless network could not be found.
I went into the properties of the router and changed the security word and saved the settings and everything worked fine.
Does this mean my system was hacked?
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Well, once you are connected to your wireless network, there is profile(wireless network profile) that is saved/stored automatically to allow you to connect when you perform a reboot...You don't have to enter any of your network credentials anymore and you stay connected to your wireless network...If you get disconnected from your wireless network(maybe whatever reason) and you attempt to re-connect to your wireless network then you can no longer connect to it unless you remove your network profile that was origially stored when you first connected to your wireless network...Once the wireless network profile is removed you can select your SSID, press connect, re-enter your network key andit connects, that's how it works...
However, when you changed the SSID your laptop thought that was a new wireless network and that's why it connected to the new SSID without any problems...
Next time if you face the same problem please do this -
For XP :
Click on Start and goto the Control Panel and double click on Network Connections, right click on Wireless Network Connection and click on Properties.
Now on this window, click on the second tab Wireless Network and give a check mark on "Use windows to configure my wireless" and then remove all the network names present in the Preferred Networks Window. Then click on OK...
Right click on the Wireless Network Connection again and click on View Available Wireless Networks and try to re-connect to your network...
Now it will give you the opportunity to put the network/wep key, make sure you enter the correct network key and confirm it...
It will connect...
For Vista :
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Network and Sharing Center >> Manage Wireless Networks, here remove all the networks present and close the Window...
Click on Connect to a Network and try to re-connect to your Network, it should ask for your Network Key/Password, enter the correct password/network key and click Connect...
It should connect...Once you are connected you should restart the computer, it should connect to Internet...

  • Help diagnosing a possibly compromised iBook

This is a repost of a previous question, with (I believe) all domains and e-mail addresses replaced.
I recently received a message from the network manager at my workplace telling me that he'd logged a number of warning about spam related to my IP address. I'm concerned that my Mac may be compromised, and am hoping that someone can help me figure out what is going on and just how bad this is.
Rather than try to list all the things I've gone through in trying to diagnose the problem, I'm basically just going to put some snippets of the log files he e-mailed me, and then hopefully someone can guide me along in the diagnosis process.
This is from what seems to be a postfix log (my username is the username for company e-mail, companymailserver is the name of the mail server, and my.ip.address appears to be an IP address assigned to me while using my home ADSL connection). I live in Morocco, which explains the .ma extension.

I installed Little Snitch to try to monitor any outgoing connections; I haven't noticed over port 25, but noticed a bunch of traceroute requests to IP addresses I don't recognize. I block the requests, as I can't figure out what application might be requesting the traceroutes, but I don't know if that was actually related. It's also possible that whatever is sending the spam is either a) coming from an application that Little Snitch approves of, like Mail, or b) somehow this is not actually my computer causing the problem (please please please).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated; I thought that I was fairly security conscious, and this worries me.
    Thanks in advance,
    Greg Westin

dnsupdate is a program for having a subdomain point to my dynamic IP address. I don't think I have anything else special running.

    Re: Trojan BackDoor.Wirenet.2
Feb 15, 2014 1:25 AM (in response to Linc Davis)
I was recently reviewing comments from Linc Davis and after replying was told it might be better to start a new discussion
Ive been having issue with my MacBook Pro, finding locks open in System Preference, Password Login issues, Bluetooth enabling without going into System Preferences, in fact I rarely use Bluetooth,.. and reconfiguration of Security & Privacy, wifi starting without opening network  preferences. I did run the diagnostic test Linc Davis posted in support for "Trojan BackDoor.Wineret.2".
Maybe the wrong test for me to run.
But I was informed that a colleague had aquired my password for my MacBook Pro,  Im not sure if its true, second hand information, although this colleague did have access,...... How or if the P/W was attained maybe from me leaving exposed laying out in written form, not sure ....but I have since changed the password, many months back, and the issues I mentioned still come and go, any possiblity these could be changing romotely
Basically what I'd like to know is any of the information from the diaognostic test of Linc Davis's is revealing anything out of the ordinary. Additionally, I've been suggested to do a clean install becuase of a root access possibility.
I would take this to the proper authority, however where Im at: the judical system could care-less, ....the police don't even have cars, pen, let alone paper to write a report.
    Thank you for any suggestions

I didn't see your message last month, but was just searching for other cases of reported Wirenet infections. I've seen three cases now in the last two months, so this is obviously being actively distributed somehow, and up until March 13, Mac OS X did not protect you from it.
Wirenet, aka NetWeird, is malware that includes backdoor functionality, which means that it gives the hackers behind it the ability to install additional components on your system or make configuration changes. Basically, whatever they want to do. So, the question is, did you actually have it installed, or did your anti-virus software just detect an installer that you hadn't opened yet?
It may be too late to get such information. If you are like most people, you deleted all detected files at the time they were detected, thus destroying any evidence we might be able to work with. If you can still extract information from your anti-virus software about what file(s) were found and where they were located, that would be exceedingly helpful.
If you think you may have actually opened a suspicious installer or app, and that this malware was actually installed on your machine, there is only one possible response that can ensure that your machine is clean: erase the hard drive. See:
How to reinstall Mac OS X from scratch
If you're not sure, it would probably be safest to do this.

When I try to update Flash Player I get a message screen saying my account may have been compromised in a recent security leak. But until the day before yesterday , I didn't even HAVE an account with Adobe. I only ended up creating one so I could come on here and ask for help. So how can I now update my Flash Player if Adobe won't let me?

You don't need an Adobe account to download or install:
    Adobe AIR
    Adobe Reader
    Flash Player
    Shockwave
Download the Adobe Flash Player installer directly by right clicking one of the following links and selecting "Save target as" or "Save Link as", depending on your browser.
Flash Player for ActiveX (Internet Explorer)
Flash Player Plug-in (All other browsers)
Close your browser and you can run the installer to update.

  • IP Security - possible compromise

I previously had an airport extreme and last October changed to AirPort Extreme (802.11n). WHile the security on the previous Airport extreme was set, I have concerns about my current one.
Recently I found some e-mails rejected by servers, that lead me to find my IP on 6 blacklists for spam; while I don't send any bulk mails. I have a feeling my IP has been compromised. Does anyone have any ideas how to increase security on my AirPort Extreme (802.11n) ?
    Any ideas welcome
    Thank you
    Steven

I changed the setting to WPA2 Personal but now my computer can't find the Airport Express or my network.
The following are the minimum requirements for a wireless client to access a WPA2 encrypted network:
    For a Mac:
    o An AirPort Extreme Card
    o OS X 10.3.3+
    o AirPort for Mac 4.2
    o AirPort Utility 5.0
    For a PC:
    o Windows XP w/SP2
    o AirPort for Windows 4.2
o A wireless adapter that supports AES encryption.
Any idea how to get back to my own network by connecting to my Airport Express?
Try temporarily connecting directly to the base station using an Ethernet patch cable between the base station & your Mac.

  • Cursor memory use in a background job

I am researching a solution for a client, and need help as I'm admittedly an Oracle greenhorn. They run 10g Enterprise Edition.
{color:navy}*The problem*{color}: create a low-priority background process that uses DB inactivity windows to read through a large table (over 25 million records) a row at a time, and perform some simple operations with a few fields from each row. The process needs to be running 24x7 by default, although able to be administratively paused/restarted at any time. It also needs to pause itself M hours after last row read, and restart after a subsequent N hours.
    h3.
    Oracle Jobs
First, I'm wondering whether this sounds like a task suitable for a "job" managed by the Scheduler (<tt>DBMS_SCHEDULER</tt>), which could be enabled or disabled to mimic pausing/restarting functionality.
    h3.
    Cursors and memory usage
My second, main question lies with memory usage. One of their main concerns is that the background process not occupy much memory on the server. The general flow I've worked up:
<li> Function1: declare and open a cursor for the main SELECT. This would be run once only. Call Function2.
<li> Function2: the second, main function would perform a fetch of one row on the cursor, and make a call to an auxiliary function to operate on the data. Function2 would be executed constantly as the main process.
<li> Function3: close the cursor. Would be executed upon reaching the last row of the table, or if for some reason the admin. should decide to abort the process prematurely.
<li> If the client decides such, this process may be constant, so it would be restarted automatically with a call back to Function1.
However, I don't understand cursors enough to know if that would occupy a lot of memory on the server throughout the life-cycle of the master process, knowing ahead of time that the resultset the cursor identifies is very large. I've attempted to research this both in manuals (the DB Administrator, SQL Reference, Application Developer's Guide) and these forums, but not able to track down a clear answer -- I got lost somewhere between PGA and SGA memory. The furthest I've gotten in understanding cursors is that they're a mere instruction set, not a copy of the resultset, and therefore don't occupy a substantial amount of resident memory. I would very much appreciate some verification about whether this is accurate or not.
I'm wide open to suggestions -- thanks in advance for the help!

Wow, so many good questions make me only think of more questions! Part of the problem is I don't get to talk directly to the client -- any questions I have (such as statistical data about the main_table) must be formed to my manager, who relays them to the client and then we wait for an answer.
    Toine wrote:
Are these 'DB inactivity windows' predictable time windows or do you mean that the process should only eat up resources when activity on the database server is low?Not predictable timeframes, but rather the process should take advantage of database server inactivity.

For the large table, how does it get its data and what happens to a row once it has been processed? Is the data static or constantly changing and if it does change, does it happen in a batch or in a series of small update/inserts etc.To my best knowledge, and without compromising the client's security: _the main table represent debts_. This is a financial institution, and it is their primary table. Each record contains about 100 fields which include various dates, amounts, rates, etc. Unfortunately, as I commented before, this table does not have a numeric primary key, but rather the 2 fields (one numeric and one varchar2) which serve together as unique identifiers. It's not a static table, as new debts are added a bit at a time for new clients, etc. Also, the existing debts are updated when rates change, etc. I've requested statistical information on the extent to which the data is updated.
    Billy Verreynne wrote:
All SQLs that are parsed and executed in Oracle, is done as cursors. Do not confuse that with how the client deals with that cursor, explicitly, implicitly, via a cursor or ref cursor handle, etc. SQL = cursor.
Andre raised an important point - it sounds like what should be business/functional specifications having technical detail included that needs to be part of the solution. Been in a few boardroom brawls myself over that - telling clients that they must state WHAT needs to be done, and not technically HOW it will be done. Worse offenders usually are senior or executive management that used to be techies decades ago and still think that they are somehow still technically competent at a software engineering level.Of course I was referring to an explicit cursor when I asked about disabling consistent read. I'm very doubtful that this is a good idea any more.
Another challenge I have with this client is that since they are a large company and actually have their own development team, the requirements come from different members of that team. Depending who wrote them, they are better or more poorly stated, and often mix in detailed technical requirements framing a boxed solution. You would expect the management to revise these requirements and weed out the nonessentials that we should be able to propose ourselves... go figure. <steps down from soapbox>
I know it's hard for everyone to understand the main requirements when I've piece-mealed the problem description together. I'm just concerned about not revealing too much information that might even possibly compromise the client.
How does the following solution sound:
I've discarded the "explicit big-momma cursor that does it all ;)" possibility, as it presents way too many issues. Instead, we can propose to the client that we add a column to the debts_table which tracks processing status, 0 or 1. 0 if it hasn't been processed yet or errors occur in processing, and 1 once it's processed successfully. 0 would be the default for all existing records and on addition of new debts. In this way, all I would have to do is select one row at a time, possibly in order of the debt's addition date, and if its processing status is 0 then process it. If it completes successfully, update the status to 1. Flow would return back to the select statement, which would select the next row with status=0, and so on.

  • Bridge and Elements 11

Is it possible to buy the last version of bridge having Elements 11? I have an old version that was included in Elements 8.
In Elements 11 is included Organiser tha is very unfrendly and complicate.
Bridge was fantastic to browse, organise and navigating.
The possibility to buy Bridge as an "App" to be added to Elements would be Super!
    Best regards
    Max

I can't buy CS& so any possible compromise?
The option Curt provided would be nice but I'm not sure this would work. However, you can try it yourself because you seem to have both Elements 8 and 11.
Under Bridge preferences is a tab called File Type Associations where you can set the file types to open in using Bridge. If it works Elements 11 should be in the list to choose from.
Photoshop CC is like CS& or not. It's not so clear for me!
Like Elements has a new number after each upgrade so does Photoshop. ONly Adobe chose to put all applications under a collective name Creative Suite or CS. The latest version of this was CS6 and inhere is Photoshop version 13 and Bridge version 5. But as said aka CS6.
Now Adobe changed its policy and now distributes all applications through the Creative Cloud (aka CC).
Inhere is PS version 14 and Bridge version 6 amongst many other applications with each their own version number. I don't know if there will be a CC2 in the future but we will find out eventually..

  • Photoshop CS5 serial number not working?

I bought and downloaded Photoshop CS5 from this site about two years ago, and since then have purchased a new computer. I want install CS5 on this new computer, but my account isn't listing CS5 under my lists of products. When I try and register the serial number I found under my program's System Info, I get an error message that says my serial number isn't valid.
A little while ago, adobe had an information leak and my account was one of the ones listed as possibly compromised- could this be the issue?
If not, why won't it let me register CS5 to my account? I really want it on my new computer. I purchased the product legitimately and I don't want my money disappearing after only two years.

Explain your situation to Customer Support, and see if you can submit some sort of proof. For example a credit card statement. Your bank can help you with that. See if your ISP can fish up the email.
Also if you purchased it as an Educational discount, you might get in touch with that section.
We are users and perhaps a Staff member may drop by, but for now that's the best advice.

  • My new internet connection doesn't work on my mac

I have an early 2008 Mac Book Pro 15inch and I just changed my internet provider. Now some websites don't charge or it takes them forever to do it. Some charge just fine. The internet connection is working great because I used it also on my iPod, iPhone and a PC laptop. I have a Mac OS X v10.5.8 and my Safari version is 5.0.6 (5533.22.3). I don't know what it is. I mean I can connect to the wi-fi signal but it doesn't work like it should. I still have the old internet connection for a few more days, and when I use it it works just fine like it should. Please help me if you have any ideas on how to fxs this problem. Thanks!!

    I have a Mac OS X v10.5.8 and my Safari version is 5.0.6 (5533.22.3).
Your operating system version and Safari are severly outdated and possibly compromised by the Flashback botnet.
It might be your new ISP see's it and is blocking your machine in order to get you to fix your problem.
I suggest you get offline, then backup your users files manually to a external drive (emergency quick copy method)
    Most commonly used backup methods
then take your machine (and all your disks and software) to a local PC/Mac specialist and have them upgrade your machine with a fresh install of 10.5 + programs (including iLife) then upgrade to 10.6.8. Snow Leopard.
They wil have to order a disk overnight, but after that it should be done.
Also max the RAM, upgrade the hard drive to 7,200 (no hybrids or SSDs) and have them check behind your fans for dustbunnies. Clean the machine.
Do not go to 10.7 or 10.8 on that machine, it's too old and at it's end of life stage, also you don't want to spend more money having to replace nearly all your software that 10.7-10.8 requires.
That machine is five years old, it's about to die, unless you haven't been using it much. but you can likely can get another 2 more years out of it with the steps I mentioned.
Later you can use the new internal drive for backup on a new machine if and when it does die. (it might not!)
If you take the machine to Apple, then they are going to hobble it with 10.7 or 10.8 and not install 10.6, also charge you a fortune for a new drive and RAM, that your just going to get a new machine instead.
When you get 10.6 installed, install Firefox web browser as it gets updates and much faster, Apple did not release Safari 6 for 10.6

  • Wired LAN on iPhone

    Hey guys,
I was trying to use office internet on my laptop to access net on iPhone. I have a wired LAN.
Any clues on how to do it if at all its possible???

    Anirudh Hingle wrote:
I have already followed his blog but i think he is explaining the process if one has a data cord or something...
The iPhone cannot connect to the Internet through it's cable the only way to do it is via Wi-Fi through your laptop this is the process that he was explaining.
m not sure whether it will work for wired lan
While your Network at work is wired and thus off-limits to the iPhone 9due to connection limitations) you can use your laptop to create an wireless access point thus giving the iPhone a way in.
The process described in the link is the only setup possible with you current hardware to be able to do this.
If you are having trouble setting this up my recommendation would be to just invest in a Wi-Fi router (or get your work to), you can get them for very little cost and they will save you from having to play around with network settings and quite possibly compromising your work's network security.
You could get anything from a USB dongle style to an AirPort Express or even An AirPort Extreme base Station (just to name Apple's products that will work with this)
This would greatly simplify your task for you
otherwise if you still want to use the hardware you have available to you i would recommend hopping onto Microsofts discussion forum and ask about creating a Wireless access point with your Laptop as they would be better suited to answer those questions since they are Microsoft related. That link unfortunatley is the best laid out and informative one i know of without me writing one up myself.
I feel that what you are really trying to acheive is a mixed network topology system in a Multiple star network layout (which is similar to what i run at home but mines more of a mesh architecture).
With Wired and Wi-Fi options both integrated and the best way to acheive this is with a Wi-Fi router
(wish you could draw diagrams for usage on here would make life a lot easier )

  • Solution and problem about USB port shutdown in thunderbolt

    Problem:
Recently, i find that all USB port, audio in my thunderbolt have been disabled and when i restart computer, it will work for a while, i play a song, the audio go through display for a while, then go to Internal Speakers. In System Preferences -> Sound -> Output, i find that Display Audio disappeared. i googled online, i find that USB ports are disable as same time. I went to Apple Store, changed logical board, it DOES'T work. I called them, THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED.
    What i do:
To my knowledge, the thunderbolt display connect to my Macmini by thunderbolt port, the OS recognize thunderbolt as two logical ports, one is video and another is USB ports(just like usb hub). the audio is belong to USB ports. Therefore, i guess that the problem is software, not hardware.
    Solution:
If you have this prolbem, please do not apply any update after 4 april 2012, the files include Java update for OS X 2012-001 to 003, also a flash play update( it is maybe the flashback virus). I am not sure which one cause the problem. Because my work, i have to use time machine every half day to backup my computer, so i restore my OS and find the solution.
    I hope it help you.
    Readman

For most users I don't agree with the above recommendation.  The latest Java updates address the security holes being utilized by the current strains for the flashback trojan and also attempt to remove it if you are infected.  So here's yiour choices:
    1. Must you have sound coming out of your display's not-so-good speakers vs. alternative better sound systems?  If so take your chances, or,
    2. Install the updates to at least check for the trojans (or at least use F_Secure's Flashback Removal Tool) but turn Java off.  Turning Java off is the general recommandation anyhow, no matter whether you update or not.
    3. If you must use Java, and don't update it, risk the possibility of getting one of the flashback trojans and possibility compromising your on-line security.  Here too turn Java off in at least the browsers you use.

  • Best Hard Drive Use?

    Hi,
I'm getting Logic Pro 7.2 on Monday. I'm installing a 7200 RPM, 100 GB drive in my Intel Macbook today. Here's my question:
Which would I be better off with regarding hard drive use:
    1. External Firewire or USB drive
    2. Internal 7200 RPM drive using system partition
    3. Internal 7200 RPM drive using separate partition
Also, should I install Logic as other programs or are there components of it that should go elsewhere?
    Thanks!
    Donny O. Collins

My feeling is that it is better to store your audio recorded with Logic (ie: vocals) on an external HD. The reason is that the head on the spinning internal HD disk is already busy running Logic; you don't want that head to be "hunting" around for your samples as well at the same time, which would strain it and possibly compromise Logic's performance as well.
Another reason to normally put your audio on an external HD is due to the limitation of the normal 5400rpm internal HD, which limits the number of audio tracks you can have. However, that should not be the case with a 7200rpm HD, such as the one you are intending to use internally.
Also, remember that not all HD are equally well-suited to HD recording, even if they run at 7200rpm. The ones that I have used most reliably for audio are Seagate and Western Digital, but, once agin, you will find people having different opinions here. These almost seems to be more concensus on which HD NOT to use for audio, such as Maxtor and LaCie...
I personnaly have always stored Logic on the internal HD, and samples on an external HD. If you get an external HD, Firewire is better for audio due to its better throughput for long samples, when compared to USB, so you should choose a HD with Firewire connection, or with both FW and USB 2.0
With regards to your second question, you should install Logic on your internal HD. The program will also install automatically there samples associated with EXS24's sampler. You can, if you want, copy them later to your external HD and then use Logic's Project Manager ( I don't remember right now if that is its exact name) to register their new locations.
In all cases, there is no "should" or "must do". Even my suggestions are just that - suggestions - and Logic will work regardless of where you store it, or its associated samples and recorded audio. The question is: for how long will it work without faults in one configuration as opposed to another. Thus, whatever you choose, you should get an external HD for backup purposes anyway. Personally, I have not only my audio on an external FW drive, but also a clone of everything on my internal HD - most importantly OSX. This allows me, for instance, to boot from the ext FW HD and use a defragmenting program (I use iDefrag) or Directory repair (I use Disk Warrior 4 for Intel) regularly. Preventive measures are good, trust me! And, of course, in case my internal HD were to fail, i would be able to continue working off my external HD - for a while - while not having lost everything.
    Hope this helps a little
    Cheers
    A.

  • G5 Quad won't calibrate...& other issues

Wow, I've been through the ringer attempting the seemingly straightforward task of combining the working parts (which includes most of them) of two parts/repair G5 Quads into one working Quad. As a consultant and troubleshooter, I expect computers to respond consistently in most cases. I forgot I was working on a G5...
Okay, where to start...? Well, the main thing I'm tackling right now is the joyous Thermal Calibration task. Trying ASD 2.6.3 on 2 separate Quad chassis and logic boards (and 1 CPU module), I am unable to get through the Calibration procedure.
    Some questions and observations:
    1. Thermal Calibration will sometimes give me a fan-related error, but usually just dies and locks up the computer entirely. In this case, the Overtemp LED (#2) comes on, along w/ the Checkstop LED (#7).
    2. Despite this, the computer will boot up and seems to run fine initially. But then w/o any significant CPU load or heating, the fans and pump will gradually increase (we're talking over 5-10 minutes) in speed until my G5 is ready to taxi down the runway and take to the skies.
    3. CPU B Core 2 seems to be the most temperature sensitive, occasionally hitting 30-40F higher than the others, but it seems to bounce around somewhat. While the others are in the 105-115F range at idle, B2 jumps around from 120-155F.
    4. Would another version of ASD be able to complete the Thermal Calibration? Apple Service Source shows 2.6.3 as the correct version for the Late 2005 G5s. Does anyone have experience w/ calibrating using another ASD version?
    5. I have tried so many combinations of CPU cards, number of CPUs, chassis/logic board, etc, that I am now at a loss. When I think I have it figured out, one combination seems like it should work and is working, something screwball will happen like the fans ramping up or a random lockup. I'm tempted to toss all of this out in the street. I like a challenge and project, but when it doesn't behave consistently, I start lamenting my time wasted w/o the satisfaction of hard-earned success.
    6. Here is what my component testing has shown and how I've combined parts:
Quad #1: 2-pump LCS w/ the lower LCS loop failed
-lower CPU card possibly compromised from this, although it seemed to work fine in a single-card arrangement
-logic board, power supply, and upper CPU card tested fine
Quad #2: 1-pump LCS w/ bad upper CPU card
-logic board, PS, and lower CPU card tested fine
So I have made 1 supposedly functional CPU module using Quad #1's upper CPU card and Quad #2's lower CPU card and 1-pump LCS. I have tried this Frankensteined CPU module in both Quad chassis/MLB combinations, w/ similar results. Main difference I have noticed is that Quad #1 doesn't like Quad #2's LCS, causing the pump to run (or think it is running) at 3600RPM and error out on ASD pump testing.
Sorry for the novel, but I'd appreciate any thoughts, answers or comments to help restore my sanity. I had thought that a "last, greatest Power Mac" would be a cool system to have, but now I'm wondering if I shouldn't have just saved my time and dropped a bunch more money on a Mac Pro instead.
    Thanks,
    Fred
P.S. Sheesh...as I typed this, naturally the Quad snickered behind me and proceeded to idle along happily for 30 minutes, then properly put itself to sleep...and properly wake as well. WTH??

    DaddyPaycheck wrote:
What leads you to believe you have two good logic boards?
Heheh....an excellent question indeed! At this point, I'm not too sure of anything anymore... But seriously, to answer your question, a few things make me think the logic boards might be ok:
    1. The machines have come up and run w/o failure, overtemp, etc, with only 1 CPU card installed (making them essentially dual 2.5s). In fact, last night I ran a Compressor batch as a test w/ one of the "half Quad" configs serving as the cluster controller and processor, and it ran w/ maxed out CPU activity for about 26 minutes straight. This was after running for a couple of hours playing iTunes and surfing the Web. Temps on the installed CPU's 2 cores never reached above 150F while I was observing, and fan speeds did not ramp up into the stratosphere as before w/ both CPU cards.
    2. I figure that, unless I purchased these machines from really nefarious people (and I don't think I did) who combined more than 1 failed item into a Quad chassis in order to get rid of it, the odds of having both a failed LCS or CPU and a failed MLB are very small (in the absence of corrosive residue, I'm assuming an LCS failure didn't cause an MLB failure). Since I've determined that one Quad has a failed LCS leading to overtemp, and the other a bad CPU card, I feel I most likely have proper logic boards.
    3. I haven't yet been able to produce a logic board failure during ASD testing.
That last one is less significant to me, as I've seen RAM and CPU failures that were not caught by ASD. But all 3 of those items together make me think there's a high likelihood that my logic boards are good (although failing to get through thermal calibration may be a sign to the contrary, but they run okay). Not a guarantee, of course...
For documentation's sake, last night in Quad #2 (which I've been working from for the last bit), I pulled the CPU module, then removed Quad #1's CPU1 card from the lower location, replacing Quad #2's CPU2 card in the upper location in the process. This left the lower location empty, and halved the Quad to a Dual 2.5. When I did this I started over w/ thermal paste, removing all of what was there and applying new (I had not completely removed the existing before). As I said above this has worked well even doing a Compressor batch. My next step is to reinstall a lower CPU card, also after full thermal paste cleanup.
Thanks for reading and your thoughts. I welcome any additional suggestions and ideas.

  • Final Cut 7 - HD / ProRes Options

    Hello Forum
I have a new documentary project. Like the last one it will be 98% moving photos (between 2000x2000 to 6000x6000 pixels at 72dpi) with a narration, most of which are animated in AfterEffects and then moved over into FCP. There will be a few seconds of HD and DV video footage although I am not sure of its format / camera. The whole program is about 30 minutes.
I invested in final cut studio 3 and now have an insane array of ProRes and HD options available. This is great but also a bit intimidating. Not sure where to start and what to pick.
I will be delivering a quicktime file to be played back on an ~60inch plasma screen (HD 1920x1080) as well as DVD and BlueRay outputs. And eventually also for web. My main goal is to edit for speed and compromised quality in the offline / rough cut stage and once picture's locked move to a higher quality timeline without having to reanimate all the photos for a higher resolution.
What do you all recommend for this project for offline and online timeline settings?
Any advice is as always much appreciated.
    Thank you
    Regards
    sk

Final Cut did not interpret the titles incorrectly.
You are exporting HD 1920x1080 video which is square pixels and then asking Compressor to make it rectangular pixels for PAL SD 720x576(whether it is 16x9 or 4x3). The HD to SD conversion is causing the distortion of the titles. This should help explain it better
    http://library.creativecow.net/articles/gerard_rick/pixel_madness.php
I would try adding the titles after it has been converted to PAL SD. I prefer Natress(a plugin for FC around $100/70 Euros) over Compressor for PAL to SD conversion.
If you can't buy Nattress here is one approach:
*Export without titles and convert to PAL in Compressor
*reimport into PAL 16x9 SD sequence
*add your titles from the HD sequence(your titles will have to be resized)
*open a title in the motion tab and adjust scale & distort to get the best possible compromise(copy & paste setting to all other titles-you may have to manually check each one as some may have special needs)
    *export and compress for DVD
This does involve extra work but there is no simple answer for converting to SD without compromises.

  • Disabling JavaScript

Currently there are two unresolved vulnerabilities in Adobe Reader and Acrobat JavaScript function. It's recommended to disable JavaScript, but when you do disable it- it prompts the user with the following dialogue box: "This document contains JavaScripts. Do you want to enable JavaScripts from now on? The document may not behave correctly if they're disabled." There's no option to turn off this popup, which means it's still left up to the user on whether they want to possibly compromise the box or not.
Now, I'm not just dealing with my home computer here, I'm dealing with an Enterprise class network with approximately 400 users..most of which will see the popup, read it and select yes in order to get away from the hassle of being asked this...every time they open a PDF file. This also means that when a user selects "yes", they are effectively bypassing the reason for having set it to disable JavaScript. This is working against what System Administrators are trying to accomplish by protecting their systems against vulnerabilities and possible attack. There are no other options that I can find providing a way to actually lock down this setting and make it "silent" for users...
Anybody have any ideas?  Adobe, can you please do something about this setting and add a function to make it run silently to the end user?

If you can't contribute something meaningful to my question and situation other than the lack of security gibberish, don't reply, please. Go troll your own post in the forums.  http://forums.adobe.com/thread/426908?tstart=0   (For anyone else who wants to just post their opinions and not a solution, here's a good place to do so).
I'm looking for a solution to the work-around issue, not debating how unsecure their software is and how vulnerable the next patch will be. "Go to something else"...is not a solution that will work in my case.
