WTR54G Wireless/Wireless Woes

I've been having problems with my WTR54G when I am connected wireless in a hotel. It's being used as a wireless client to the hotel network with two laptops connecting wirelessly through the WTR54G. Everything works great and seamlessly (both machines have access to the Internet) with one huge problematic exception ...
The two laptops cannot see or ping each other. No Firewall software is configured. One machine is MacBook and the other is a Windows XP machine. On a wired network, they can ping each other without any issue.
By symptoms, you would expect that AP Isolation is enabled, but it is not. It's clearly disabled.
I'd like to figure out a way to make this work. Is there something that I am missing?

No effect, but I did experiment by switching the Internet connection to a wired type. Both wireless laptops can now see each other as a result. Unfortunately, I now have no Internet access when I use this mode.
I fear that the AP Isolation when using the wireless Internet may be an undocumented "feature". A few other clues such as the inability to change the wireless channel of the WTR54G, when operating with a wireless Internet connection, seem to suggest some real limitations of this device. AP Isolation may come along for the ride as that's the only way they can get it to work with a single radio.
Are my observations correct? Is this something that is simply unsupported?
Does anyone have a workaround?

  • Wireless Networking Woes - Which option should I go with next?

Hi all. I moved into a new place about two months ago and have had continuous struggle getting my wireless network working since then. I have a cable modem and an Airport Extreme which I bought about 2 years ago. I can pick up wireless pretty well within about 20 feet of the router but past that the signal tends to fall off pretty dramatically. At 40 feet I can't pick up a signal at all.
I thought at first that the problem was the wi-fi card in my new MacBook Pro (as I was dropping connex other places as well). I got it replaced but that didn't help at all. I also tested an older MacBook Pro and couldn't get a signal outside of 20 feet either.
I purchased an Airport Express last week to see if that would help. Unfortunately it didn't as it could barely connect to the Airport Extreme outside of about 10-15 feet and therefore didn't extend the range enough to reach where I need to go (40 feet from the router/AeBS). I also tried to purchase a new Airport Extreme to see if that would improve things. It didn't.
I'm now trying to figure out how to move forward. I need to get a strong internet connection 40 feet from the base station which doesn't seem like it should be all that difficult. I guess I'm down to a few options:
#1 - Replace the original Airport Extreme router with a different router. Probably would be the NETGEAR WPN824 RangeMax Wireless Router based on some research I've done.
#2 - Run a powerline adapter so that I can access the network over the electrical lines. It sounds like something like the Netgear XAVB101 Powerline AV Ethernet Adapter Kit will work pretty well for this.
#3 - Move. I really hope it doesn't come to that.
I guess I could also run an Ethernet cable across the entire place...that would be preferable to moving eh?
Anyway, any thoughts on these options or anything else I can try. I've spent countless hours on this and it's really, really frustrating to not be able to do something that seems like it should be fairly easy. It's possible that the construction in the new place is causing these issues. However, I still need to try to figure out a work-around.
    Any suggestions?

    Jon,
Before you do all of this, might I suggest you download istumbler and do a wireless survey of your new home? It may be that you have some neighbours wifi signals cramping your own. istumbler should give you a comprehensive list of results, including channel numbers and strengths, which may help
    Kind regards

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard woes...

Has anyone heard of this problem before...?
I was typing away on my wireless keyboard. Have had it for over a year. Zero problems before.
I was attempting to copy/paste text in Quark and discovered a couldn't (using the keyboard commands).
    I could type sentences/characters. I just couldn't cut/paste.
Then I discovered when I hit the Delete key it would enter an equal sign "=" or "an equal sign and a zero "=0" instead of deleting.
Very strange behavior. Thinking it might be a quark problem I tried editing text in Word. Same thing.
Then I tried renaming/deleting text in file names on my desktop. Same thing.
I rebooted and now my Computer won't pair with the keyboard. It sees it in Bluetooth set up and gives me a code. But when I type it in and hit return -- I get a "can't pair" with device error.
I've changed batteries. I've left the keyboard sitting without batteries for 30 minutes.
    Still can't pair.
    Is my keyboard dead/dying?
Again the computter sees the keyboard via bluetooth. It just can't pair with it.
Light on the keyboard does the blink-blink pause blink blink thing showing it's discoverable.
    Any thoughts?

Just an update. Since my keyboard is out of warranty I figured I was out of luck and fixing to buy a new one. Then my wife mentioned she had wiped it down the other day with windex. Doh!!!
That made me think perhaps moisture had gotten down inside.
With nothing to lose I grabbed a T-screw driver (and an 000 phillips) and decided to open the thing up and see waht could be done.
When I got to the membrane/circut board under the key board and the metal grounding plate they were very damp with condensation.
I peeled the two layers of the membrane apart and blow dryed them gently. Wiped off the metal plate with a cloth sprayed with tuner cleaner and put it all back together.
    It works!!!
Always a chance corrosion could bite me later. But so far so good. Everything is up and runnng.

  • Wireless Reception Woes - Fixed

I bought my wife a Macbook Pro this March. The first thing we noticed when we fired it up was the poor wireless reception compared to my PowerBook G4. Even kept side-by-side, the Macbook Pro had poor reception and high latency (when it did stay connected).
I knew it didnt have anything to do with my Wireless router (Netgear WGT624), because my other 2 Windows laptops and PowerBook connect just fine. I invested in a QuickerTek Connect @ $200 and it worked as advertised. Personally, I thought it looked ugly and returned it.
I took the MacBook Pro into the nearest Apple store and explained the problem to the Genius there. Given the volume of discussion about this topic on this forum, I would've thought he'd have a knowing smile on his face. However, he said he'd never heard of this issue. He showed me how he was seeing "all the bars" on the Airport icon when connecting from my wife's MacBook Pro at the Apple store.
Nevertheless, I insisted it didnt work at home and he sent it in for repairs. When it came back, lo and behold, wireless networking works just fine - it is on par with my PowerBook G4 now.
What did the repair center do? They replaced the "ANTENNA ASSY". I take it that means they replaced the antenna assembly (the dark gray bar on the hinge between the screen and keyboard).
My advise - if you are having wireless reception issues and your MacBook Pro is still under warranty, take it into an Apple Store for repairs.
Macbook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

I went ahead and invested in a QuickerTek Transciever for MacBook Pro (http://www.quickertek.com/MBProXCVR.php - $200). The wireless reception improved a lot.
While I was reading another post on these discussion board, I came across a suggestion to only enable Wireless G on my router. All this while, my router (Netgear WGT624) was set to use Auto 108Mbps on Channel 6. I set it to "Wireless G only" and changed the channel to 8.
Now I have impeccable wireless reception. I'm going to return the Quickertek transciever and save myself $200

  • Panda usb wireless driver woes

I have a mid-2009 MBP where the airport adapter has failed.  I bought a Panda Wireless usb adaptor, primarily because it a) is cheap, b) has mac drivers, c) has good reviews on amazon.  It's definitely a little flakey -- every so often it simply refuses to connect to any networks, even a saved network that it has connected to many times before.  There is no way to restart the driver without rebooting the machine, and if I bump the device so that it comes out of the usb port it hangs my Finder and I have to mash the power button to reboot.  I used the v1.11 drivers when I had SnowLeopard, and when I went to Mavericks I went to the v1.12a adapter.  The flakiness is a little different between the two drivers (the newer one doesn't hang my machine nearly as often )
So I'm thinking of buying a new adapter.  (I didn't buy 5g.)  I would definitely be willing to shell out a little more cash for a device that works better and is faster.  Does anyone have any recommendations?  If I buy a more expensive model, will it work better, or will it be just as flakey and just cost more?

well, i want this wireless usb adapter for my powerbook g3 (lombard) i post eariler asking if someone could help me create a small network, because i need internet on my powerbook, and i want to put tiger on it too, (i finnally bought the cds) can i put tiger on my PB using my iBooks Combodrive? like when i put the cd in is shows up on my desktop them go to my PB go to my iBooks HD, (shared files) desktop > Tiger, then upgrage to tiger, can i do that? all i need to know is how to get these two computers talking.
    Thanks!

  • K8N SLI Platinum Wireless Network Woes

Hoping that someone has any ideas that I should try.
Recently put a new rig together (specs in sig) and everything was fine untill I installed my wireless PCi adapter about 3 weeks after building and fully testing (using a long patch cable to the router). I have updated every driver + windows + firmware etc already.
I am using a D-Link DWL-G520+ PCI adapter and a D-Link DSL-G604T ADSL modem/router/4-port switch/access point. The problem is that I randomly lose the wireless connection, and the only way to get re-connected is to right-click on the network icon in the tray (now with a cross through it) and select repair, which disables the adapter and re-intialises it and reconnects.
I know the router\access point is OK as I have a laptop using an internal intel wireless adapter which stays connected when the desktop drops its connection.
I have been using this wireless setup for a couple of years now, with a Gigabyte MB no problems until the MSI board.
I have tried the card in all PCI slots, checked for conflicts, and fiddled with all of the settings I can get at but I just cant seem to get it to stay stable.
Im getting to the end of my tether with it, should I just try a different card?

You said "Very Good - Excellent signal strength, then all of a sudden it reports there is no network in range (at this point the laptop is still connected)".
That sounds like the MSI mobo is working fine but the card is losing the wireless signal.  The "no network within range" message you get indicates that the card is interfacing properly with the mobo but the card is losing the signal from the router.  Clicking on the icon and redetecting networks works, so again mobo and card interface seems to work.  Sounds to me like a D-link signal reception issue.  Try moving the router closer to the computer and see if this helps as I think the signal strength could be the issue.  A different card might have a better working antenna (the one you have is probably defective) but stick with the same brand (or "netgear" which I believe is using the same electronics) for best results and compatibility.
The Aerocool, while it has impressive specs, is a "bargain type psu" and does not the same reputation as Enermax, Antec, Tagan or OCZ and you have some expensive components that make high power demands.  Remember that it does not make sense to spend a lot of money on high priced components and cut corners when it comes to the thing that powers them all.  Fluctuating power from the psu is the next suspect if a different card has the same exact problem.  (The chances of that are remote if your computer has  no other problems.)
    Good luck.
Edit-  I just checked the price of the Aerocool and it is not cheap at $106. Sometimes you can spend a lot and not get a lot.

  • [SOLVED] Wireless Connectivity Woes

I've been using Arch since November of last year, and I've finally come across one of those problems that is so irritating it's difficult to find the answer.
THE PROBLEM: Both myself and a friend of mine have found ourselves unable to connect to a wireless network on our laptops. We use wifi-menu to connect to a network which saves a netctl profile to use at a later date. We have wpa_supplicant installed.
SYMPTOMS: When we select any wireless network from wifi-menu, we are immediately returned "Job for '[email protected]' failed" and are told to check the service's status or journalctl -xn for more information. The information to be gathered there is null and void. Essentially just says that the service failed, but not why. I've attempted using DHCP_DEBUG='yes' and also setting the dhcp timeout to 30, but it had no effect. In fact, it didn't even wait for the timeout.
ATTEMPTS: I attempted to use NetworkManager and nmcli to resolve the issue to no avail. nmcli simply failed to connect. Enabling NetworkManager.service with systemd worked temporarily. Essentially, I could plug in a cable or connect to wifi with no problems, but the connection would only last around 30 seconds before giving up. Unplugging and replugging the cable would have the same effect, or I could restart NetworkManager.
NOTES: Not sure when it started happening (so don't know if it was an update problem). I have not RTFM for netctl, mostly because it's low priority (I use a wired connection most often).
This is something that's worked just fine for me since I started using Arch. Was there an update that caused this to happen? I use the latest version of everything, so I would have any of the newest bug fixes, but also the newest bugs.
If there's any information you need, I'll be happy to give it. Networking isn't my forte; it's always worked out for me.

  • Getting Started with Wireless: Wireless configuration on 877W router - STUC

Just letting you know that I've already posted an identical post under "Getting Started with Wireless" but don't feel that I'm getting any attention so I made another post. Thank you.
    Hi all
I have a Cisco 877W router running IOS v 12.4(15)T3. Have been trying to configure wireless to run WPA-PSK and is stuck at the final stage. Spent a lot of time configuring the router using CLI but ended up using the Web GUI interface. I was able to configure the wireless settings (I think) but failed when connecting to the router from WinXP-SP2 and was wondering if you have any suggestion for me. I've ran the following debugs on the router:
    VNRouter#sho debug
DHCP server event debugging is on.
    dot11:
802.1X module WPA/WPA-PSK/CCKM key management debugging is on
    dot11 Syslog debugging is on
Below is the error message when connecting wirelessly

I've created two VLANs (and tied these two vlans to 2 separate SSID) on this router for a reason and so far has not been able to connect to any of them (SSID). I've also attached the config so you can have a look. Thanks in advance for your help.

The configuration looks fine. In most cases, the connectivity issues with WPA-PSK is due to the mismatch in PSK on the Client and the AP. Try re-entering the PSK key on both the router and the client and check if you are seeing any issues.

  • Officejet Pro 8000 wireless - wireless radio not turned on?

I bought the printer a year ago and, instead of installing it wirelessly, I connected it directly to my Windows Vista 64-bit machine with via USB. I now want to convert it so it connects wirelessly to my wireless router. I went thru the re-installation / conversion (using the HP website) and during the installation it could not detect a wireless printer. I ran the Wireless Network Test report form the printer and it said the wireless radio on my printer was turned OFF and that it had to be ON in order for it to be detected. It also indicated the "Network Status" was "offline"  ...not surprising. How do I turn the Wireless Radio on?

If it is an 8000 A809a then it does not have wireless.  If it is an 8000 A909n it does.  I'll assume it does.
Press and hold the wireless button on the front of the printer for 3 seconds to turn it on (and off).

  • Macbook pro can't find my 7515 on network wirelessly.

I installed the 7515 which is connected to the same network as my macbookpro via USB and it works fine when connected via cable, but computer cant locate printer on network wirelessly. I am stumped

OK, first restart your router by pulling its power plug momentarily.
Next, on the front of the printer go to Setup > WIreless > WIreless Setup Wizard.  Run it.
The printer should now be connected to the Belkin.  If it is not, check for firmware updates for the Belkin.
On your Mac, download and install this: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907
    Finally, reset the printing system:
    - Go to System Preferences > Print & Scan
    - Right (or control) click in the rectangle listing your printers and select Reset Printing System.
WARNING - this will delete ALL of your printers!
    - Select the plus sign to re-add a printer. Select the Defualt tab on the top of the window. Look for the printer, select it and wait until the "Add" button becomes available. Click it.

  • Wireless internet not working at my house when I use my laptop (using a linksys wrt54g2 router)

I am using a laptop for wireless internet (Dell D610). I have no problem using wireless internet at my school and in other places, but at my house, I can’t browse the internet. The router at my house has a strong signal (4 or 5 bars) and when I try to connect to it, it says that I am connected, but when I open up the internet browser, I can’t get online. The router is in a room right next to mine and it is on the same floor. It is a Linksys WRT54G2 router.
When I go to the network connections folder, for the wireless network connection icon, it says “not connected, firewalled.” I can still browse the internet, though (at places other than my house).
Another thing that I want to mention- I can't connect to other routers in the neighborhood either (the ones that aren't secured). It just doesn't connect (but for the router in my house, it connects). But my roommate told me that a bunch of people have connected to this one guy's router.
What is the problem here? What can I do to make the internet work? Why would I be able to access the school's wireless internet and not the one in my house?

Whats the Wireless Settings you have set on your Router, I there might be the possibility that you have set the security mode on your Router too high thats the reason you are not getting connected to your Wireless Network. Follow the setps to change the Wireless settings on your Router and i think this might help in getting you connected to your wireless network.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
Click on the Sub tab, Wireless MAC Filter..
Make sure the Wireless MAC Filter on your Router is Turned Off.
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • HP2540 can no longer be contacted wirelessly. (SOLVED)

Having installed the printer under Linux using CUPS 1.4. I used the Wireless Direct connection to connect to it via my browser and http://192.168.223.1 and set the security to off as we have no neighbours and the router too is unsecured.
The printer returned a connection address of http://192.168.2.254:9100 and the Wireless light stayed on. The printer could then be found and installed wirelessly by CUPS.
In an effort to retrace my steps and explore the possibility of a Wireless Direct connection I reset the printer with Cancel/Wireless, and now cannot connect via my LAN or by Wireless Direct. Error messages point to an authentification problem. The Cancel/Wireless/Wireless/Unplug sequence didn't work either. I can't get to the printer's set-up page to reset it. Is there any other way or do I now have a USB-only printer.
    Thanks.
(Edit) Redid Cancel/Wireless, unplugged printer for 5 mins, restarted it and reprinted the EPrint connection page. Used the new security code supplied to log on to printer and reset the router connection. Established an EPrint connection directly to my Android phone too. I'll mark this SOLVED.

    Download and run this utility.
Also, WEP is not secure.  It can be broken with freeware in about 10 minutes.  Switch to WPA or WPA2.

  • How do I make my wireless internet password protected?

I set up my wireless router and went to the 192.168.1.1 to set up everything. But how do I make it password protected, so unwanted people can't access my wireless internet? I did it before but can't figure it out again, haha. I went to Wireless>>>Wireless Security, which default the security mode is set to disabled. Should I enable it? If so, which one? This is my house, by the way. WPA Personal WPA Enterprise WPA2 Personal WPA2 Enterprise RADIUS WEP If this is all wrong, then where do I go to enable a password?

Yes. You should enable it. Otherwise anyone in your proximity can access your wireless LAN, your computers and your internet connection.
You should use WPA2 Personal with AES and a strong longer passphrase to get the highest security. The passphrase can be up to 63 characters long. But it kind of depends on what your wireless clients can do which you must connect. Depending on how old the computers/wireless cards are some can only do WPA, some only WEP. You should not use WEP unless absolutely necessary. WEP can be cracked within minutes. WPA and WPA2 are considered secure at this time.
Thus, kind of the preference should be from highest security down. (choices may be slightly different for your router).
    WPA2 Personal AES
    WPA2 Personal AES+TKIP
    WPA Personal AES
    WPA Personal TKIP
    WEP 128bit
    WEP 64bit
However, don't worry to much about the security of WPA. The differences between WPA and WPA2 are more theoretical. Just don't use WEP. Using AES+TKIP should allow WPA and WPA2 clients to connect. Some WPA clients have still difficulties with that and you may have to revert to pure WPA.
Windows XP requires an update for WPA2. Available for download from microsoft.

  • Mac os 10.6.8 & hp officejet pro 8500a plus (910g) stopped printing wirelessly.

hp officejet pro 8500a plus (910g) prints from mac os 10.6.8 with a usb, but stopped printing wirelessly
HP Network Configuration Page states Network Status: ready and Active Connection Type: Wireless
Wireless Network Test Report - looks A-O.K.
Turned off modem, printer and laptop & restarted modem, printer, laptop computer
Seems that the computer can't "find" the printer, maybe.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

If you open System Preferences --> Print & Fax and click the "+" symbol at the bottom of the printer list on the side, you should get an "Add Printer" dialog window to pop open.  Is your printer visible in that window?
If not, try printing a configuration report from the printer, to get the IP address your printer currently has.  If you type that number into your web browser of choice (Safari, Firefox, etc.), does the printer's "embedded web server" page load?
If so, you could set up the printer on your Mac using the IP address in the "Add Printer" dialog. To do that, you select "IP" at the top of the window rather than "Default" (which is a discovery list), and paste the IP address into the "Address" field.  If the printer is available, it should pick the model automatically.
    Cheers,
