WVC54GCA future firmware suggestions

Hello all, feel free to add your own suggestions for future firmware improvements for the WVC54GCA camera.
AUTOMATIC TIME UPDATE FUNCTION:
At power-ON the camera presently updates the right time from a web time server.
This does NOT work after a power failure, which affects the modem as well. The modem takes some time to power up, the camera by then has decided to abandon the time update and defaults to 2005.
Suggestion: make the WVC54GCA try at least every hour to update its time, or even more frequently.
Or as an alternative:
Delay the initial time search by 5 minutes.
Cheers.

I'd like to see an increase in the motion detection event legnth.  Support for recording events to a NAS would be a great improvement as well.

  • Suggestion for future firmware release

Hi, I'm proud to be a possessor of an AirPort Extreme and I would reccomend some useful deficiencies for future firmware update.
The ability to specify DNS1 and DNS2 for DHCP Client (I don't want that AirPort resolve itself)
The ability to quickly turn off and on wireless for health and green respect.
I'm thinking at a small application that doesn't restart AirPort but only turn off and on wireless and wired host continue to work.
Obviously AirPort Extreme doesn't have any hardware button to turn off wireless, but this could be a great thing for future models of AirPort...
    Best regards!

Why not let Apple know directly about your suggestions?

  • SSH changes vs future firmware update

Hullo, I have made some changes to WD My Cloud via SHH: I disabled ipv6;I stopped two services through crontab (S85wdmcserverd and S86wdphotodbmergerd)etc, according to http://blog.cloud-client.info/?p=1365 In case of future firmware update and I perform the installation will the changes done be overwritten?Would be advisable to accept the update in the future? Thank you in advance.

Indeed, an answer from a user that has experienced the aggravation of firmware updating and vowed never again will he update; unless he has two clouds (one to update and the other to keep as backup). yes... once you update your firmware, all changes will be lost and if you had store script files in the /usr/local/sbin directory, they will be gone too... In a sense it is a good thing because if you had done a lot a changes, this reverts your device back to original factory state. Now I have heard rumors that if you by pass too many firmware updates and decided to upgrade from, lets say 3.04 (which happens to coincide with my current version) to the latest firmware 4.xxx which is probably 6 update versions ago, your device will be bricked. They say, the customers that runs and replies in this forum, that you will need to upgrade your firmware one by one until you reach the latest version. The other rumor is that many have updated their firmware to the latest version to find that nothing works, speed is slower, usb connections don't connect and of course drop outs are more frequent. Then there are those who says "I've upgraded and everything is fine", but that particular user probably has 5MB of data on his drive. Now here is what I suggest. 1. Always have another copy of your data which has nothing to do with firmware updates. Never ever copy your data to the Cloud device and erase the original unless you have another copy somewhere else. If you don't have another device and don't wish to buy another device, either leave the original on your original drive and use the Cloud as your backup, or subscribe to one of the free or paid online storage to keep a backup copy, but don't rely on the online storage as your only copy either, since places like Megaupload may disappear overnight and your only copy may be in the hands of the FBI.2. if you upgrade your firmware, it is better to have another Cloud for a 3rd backup. That way if something fails (and it would feel like it expecially when it goes white light on you), you have another device to use while the other one is being RMAed.3. If you have stopped the scans from occuring, the first thing that happens after an update is a flurry of activity from your Cloud trying to catch up on its scans and you might get locked out. So be prepared to SSH into it as soon as it lets you which is way way after the white light stays on for several hours (speaking from experience). 4. Once you SSH in, be prepare to repeat the fixes that you applied to your last version. For four years (or more), I haven't seen a switch to turn off the media scans although in version 3.04, they actually turned off the scans automatically dues to processor overload and it had a message on the UI telling me that the scans has been stopped and in order to restart the scans you must reboot (I didn't reboot for 6 months). You can skip firmware upgrades as I have without too much problems. Although they have fixed a couple of potential security threats, none of them should potentially affect you since you are behind a router. Although eventually I expect that I will have to upgrade my firmware simply for the reason that the matching iphone app will require the latest version. Perhaps on that day, I will sell my Cloud and move on to a more robust NAS. Good luck..  edit: the/bin/sh /etc/rc2.d/S86wdphotodbmergerd stop /bin/sh /etc/rc2.d/S85wdmcserverd stop  are not permanent changes. If you reboot the Cloud, those two process will restart. The update-rc.d commands will disable the processes until you upgrade the firmware.

  • EA6900 Update and Two Suggestions for Future Firmware "Nice to Haves"

Hey, first off, I've been a user of Linksys Routers for many years now, so I am familiar with the different settings and other selections that you generally see on the firmware pages.  As to the EA6900, I am very, very PLEASED with how this router initially set up, along with the different pages in it's firmware.  With the one exception noted below, the pages and the various settings "flow" very well.  This baby is up and kickin and the house is literally dripping in both 2.4 and 5 GHz RF.  The DHCP Reservation and MAC Wireless Filtering Tables worked without a hitch.  The setup for FTP and NAS was simple!  BTW, the setup for FTP shares is far easier than what we had to do using the EA3000 firmware.  Kudos there!  I am using the router associated with a server that is hosting about 25 different wired devices throughout the house, with a Cisco SG-200-08 Smart Switch behind the router for the LAN, which is load balancing on a Teamed (2 NIC'S) 2GB Adapter .  The router grabbed Comcast's Native IPv6 and set that up flawlessly.  Here is the information on how all that went (read from the bottom up): http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28693387-IPv6-Dumb-Questions-About-My-IPv6-Goat-Roped-Hookup  Information on how the netwrk worked in Teaming  and LAG mode is here: https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/4071888#4071888
OK:, So, Mr. Linksys Firmware Developer, whoever and wherever you are, I have two suggestions on the user GUI that would make everyone's life a little easier next time the firmware is updated:
    1.  Please make it so numbers, particularly MAC and IPv6 numbers, can be copied and then pasted to another place in the firmware.  For example, in the Information tab of the Device Settings section, I should be able to copy MAC and IP numbers and then be able to paste them, say, in the DHCP Reservation Table. Other Linksys device firmware allowed for this.
    2.  For goodness sakes, PLEASE don't nest the Diagnostics tab under the Troubleshooting group.  It drives me nuts to think that getting the router's status, to ping or traceroute, or to do a firmware backup would be found in "Troubleshooting".  Suggest that all y'all just remove the Diagnostics tab to the far left side of the application and have that item as its own stand-alone group!
Then I will be most happy.  As if it really matters, BUT I wanted to give all y'all my perspective from a user way down in the day-to-day weeds. A most happy Boy otherwise.

  • Suggestion to Apple for future firmware update

Can I make a suggestion or two here of some features if there's an upgrade to the firmware of the iPod Video?
-It would be mighty cool to have one more option for Backlight...maybe one where every time it switches tracks, it would light up for 5 or 10 seconds.
-I WISH the timed sleep function could be put on the main menu rather than having to go into the Clock settings first.
-A display option added that would show just the artwork.

The first one is a really good one with an option to set your iPod to light up for a couple seconds when it switches tracks. So many times in the car I won't recognize the track (especially if it is something new I added to iTunes) and I have to touch the iPod to force the backlight on so I can see what it is.
Another one I would love to see, and have send the idea to Apple years ago, is to allow the screen color to be changed rather than being white. One very useful application of this would be to use a dark red screen so when using the iPod at night when you want to look at the iPod the blinding white screen ruins your night vision, so having the option to change the screen color, while cool in its own right, would be great to have a "night" setting using a dark red screen.

*Fix the bug where certain videos freeze at the same point every time, skipping past this point they play fine again
*When charging on computer, the player fills up its charge bar after about an hour or so and says its charged but after a short while it starts charging again with the bar on full. If you take it off charging after the first charging bit you get significantly shorter battery life than leaving it charging for a further few hours until it says its fully charged again.
*Support playing protected content from the SD card e.g. audible books
*playing MP4 files with AAC audio is broken with this firmware (Worked in the previous firmware).
*The battery can lose a significant charge whilst off.
*An mp3 will only show album art if the Album field of the ID3 Tag has something in it
*When playing an album, the cover art shown is not always the one embedded in the current track(It appears to show the most common one for all the tracks in the album, even if the track is played on its own). Therefore if one track in the album contains different cover art it does not display the different embedded art for that track
*The random play is not always that random
*When playing a song then connecting to pc after disconnecting the song has stopped and is at the beginning
*Some SD cards are reported not working any more after updating from the previous version
*When plugging in headphones when the player is off there is a flickering of the screen and the player momentarily comes on then goes off
*The repeat track mode only repeats a track 6 times before stopping
*Sometimes when plugging the player in it does not dock even though it charges (When turned on and off)
*You turn off the player just after it goes into the red battery section, turn it on next day and the battery is the same, turn off without playing anything, try and turn it on several hours later and no battery at all (No low battery warning was given at any point) perhaps the battery discharged the last bit while turned off in standby mode.
*When the battery is very low and the player can't turn on, perhapse the power led should flash twice when you try to turn it on to indicate this, otherwise you might think the player is broken. (I got very worried the first time it happened)
*In my computer when viewing the properties of the zen by right clicking the icon (which is not enabled by default) the battery status only show the value when the player was first plugged in and does not update to show a higher charge after time, even after closing and reopening my computer, to view the updated status you must unplug and re plug in your zen.
*When a custom background is set and you are viewing a full a screen image and you press back, the background image flashes for a second on the screen before stuttering and flashing back to the thumbnail view
EDIT: Added a many more things

  • WVC210 - Firmware Suggestion

I've been helping my retired friends, who winter down south, set up inexpensive home surveillence systems for their primary home residents (Usually 3' to 5 cameras).  Until I found the WVC210 I've used Panasonics BL-131A's.  I'm really impressed with this Linksys camera, in fact it would be perfect for home surveillence camera if the firmware had a few more features.  The ideal system is one that includes stand alone wireless ip cameras that require only the camera/router/internet for the system to function.   Both the Panasonic and the Linksys have this capability.  They both also let you access them anytime on the web and have PTZ to check out the property.  (Panasonic does allow for better Zoom)
Panasonic sends the motion detection email alert but the Linksys goes a step further by including a 5sec avi/with sound attachment. Would be greatly improved by having the ability to email more than a 5sec file.  Would have helped to have it send using a more compressed file than avi (more information in the same size file).  Argument could be made that some mail providers limit file size to 1mb but most providers have upped the attachment size these days because most of us send photos and video files that are much larger. Lets say we up the email attachment to a 2 or 3 min video.  Then instead of just seeing someone walk to the front door, we see them ring the doorbell and make sure they walk away if we are not home.
FTP Alert - Again both cameras have this ability and again Linksys probably includes the 5 sec attachment. (Advantage Linksys)  This is where Linksys could, however, gain many more customers like myself.  We don't need to record/save files at set times during the day, we just need to record and save files if there is activity.  Instead of just using FTP to accept an alert, it would be perfect to have the camera stream data to our FTP data storage site for longer periods when motion is detected. Lets say the firmware had settings that allowed streaming to go for maybe 10,20,30 min. Probably would want to have the ability to limit to file size if there were a lot of false triggers sent.
Both the Linksys and the Panasonic cameras don't handle morning or afternoon sunny days. Linksys has a big advantage by using a dome over their lens. Now they need to exploit the advantage by coming up with some non-glare plastic to use for the dome.  Overall its a great camera and I will use more of them in the future.  Wish there was an inexpensive outdoor version of it.  Wouldn't take much to make it waterproof and that would be enough to use outdoors in places without severe weather.

Steve, I've also got to comment on Cisco's tech support.  I've called them a couple of time and got to a tech in minutes and had no problems understanding them.  I can not say that about most support centers today.  Yours is excellent!!!!!!
I have looked at your suggested cameras and while they look good I prefer cameras that have PTZ to cover as close to 180 degree as possible with a single camerea.  I also want them to be wireless and not require a computer as a montoring device.  I earlier downloaded and looked at the Cisco Video Monitoring v1.2.1 but could not find many features at all.  The web based application that came with the camera certainly looked better and had more configurations.  The camera picture even looks clearer using the camera's software.  I'm hoping that when Cisco acquired Linksys they kept the programmers that developed Linksys v1.1.0 software because this interface and features beat most any of the monitoring systems I've seen costing a couple hundred dollars.  Wish I could use it to monitor those Panasonic cameras.   :>)

  • 5D Mark III firmware suggestions

    Hello,
Could Canon team give us their positions on these suggestions please ?
    1) The Auto ISO is far from being convenient.
    - Could we specify the min shutter speed instead of being limited to a restricted number of predefined values ?
    - When shutter speed is set to "auto", could we set a priority as regards the one-over-the-focal-length rule thanks to a slider ? This is exactly what is so WELL done for some autofocus settings, so why not extend it to the "auto" value ?
    2) When we switch the lens to manual focus, could you make the focus grid and red blinking vanish ?
    3) Could you display the focal length on the rear LCD when reviewing a picture ? Presently, only aperture/speed/ISO are displayed when you click on "Info".
    4) This last one might sound like a gadget... Would it possible when pressing the M-Fn button (or other) to set the focus to the hyperfocal ? Nowadays, there are no more indications for this on the lens barrel. And it is so useful for street photography and landscape. The camera knows the focal length and the current aperture. There are tables that give the relation between aperture, focal length and hyperfocal (as simple as a rule of thumb). So this should work, no ?
Maybe I am alone here to think that this would be welcome additions (#1 top priority) and will never be heard by Canon's dev team... But I would really appreciate having their answers written down here. Thanks for your consideration on this matter.
    Cheers,
    Yoms

We agree with all of these suggestions.
And we will also add the following suggestion than CAN be implemented via Firmware Update.
PLEASE CANON consider these requests, and forward them to the right department:
1- Could we enable AF points blinking in red even when the sccene is light?
Currently they only blink red when the scene is dark, even if you set the View Finder to always be illuminated.
This is VERY useful because in lot of situations the black overlay AF points is not very easy to see in light scenes.
2- If possible: also make them more visible (blinking red) in AI Servo, because they're currently hard to follow in lot of situations.
3- Could we assign different functions to the RATE button? It's currently almost a waste of button for only a couple of functions.
4- Please implement a "Hot / Sutck Pixels" REMAPPING function to let the user tell the camera to hide these deffective pixels in stills and video mode.
This is ESSENTIAL in digital cameras (every sensor has deffective pixels, most of them "mapped" in factory to be hidden, but not all). Digital sensors may even show more hot/stuck pixels over time. It could work in similar way than the "Dust delete data"
5- We expect an Option for CLEAN 4:2:2 HDMI output as promised by Canon, besides the current Full HD HDMI output option with shooting information, which is essential for using external monitors.
6- PLEASE, could Canon implement PEAKING in Video mode? The 5D Mark III is a $3,000+ camera.
There are currently cameras by other manufacturers with Peaking, 1080p60 for less than $1,000...
The 5D Mark III had strong advertised aimed towards the video market, yet it doesn't have this basic feature for filmmaking & video.
7- Please, could Canon improve the ALL-I mode?
It delivers poor quality (considering the BIG memory space required) when there are low motion scenes, showing more macro blocking than IPB and a noticeable "fizzy" noise, even at Low ISO.
8- Please, improve the Sharpness algorithm in Video mode, to get SHARPER images when setting it higher than zero.
Currently it produces noticeable halos, making it almost unusable for professional work.
The list could be longer, but all these improvements are VERY important and CAN be made via firmare update and would make the 5D Mark III more competitive and a higher value.
    Thank you very much Canon!
We really hope you listent to your customers.

  • Future firmware (2.0) update question

Hello, I have just gotten a new iPod touch and am awaiting the new update. However, I feel uncomfortable about online purchases (all my music comes from CDs and such), so I am wondering if I can update my iPod at an Apple Store?
And to clarify, the update will be available sometime in July and will cost roughly 10$?

James, all indications about getting the upgrade installed at an Apple store are "No". I base that on the previous upgrade, which was a file sitting on the computer that when accidentally removed caused the iPod to revert to the previous state. As this is likely to be the same format, it would be likely that the file would need to be present on your computer.
Similarly, all previous models of iPod were updated either through iTunes or by the now retired "iPod Updater" app. At no point in the history of this device could one make an appointment at the Genius Bar to have the newest firmware/software upgrade added in. I would see no reason to start now.
Of course, we have all been wrong speaking about the future, which is why Apple wisely forbids speculation.
As was mentioned, you can set up an iTunes account using iTunes cards. But, as also mentioned, this upgrade is all about being connected, and the two main features it enables (App store and .mac connectivity) are going to need payment. One will be online purchases, and the other very much wants you to set up recurring billing (but is not required).

  • Next Zen Micro Firmware Suggesti

I thought it would be a good idea to have a section where people can put in their ideas for new zen micro firmware updates, as for myself i have 2
. when you select "random play all" from the DJ section it sets your micro to play in shuffle mode, then afterwards when u play music it shuffles the songs you had selected yourself. I think it would be a good idea to add to the next update when "random play all" is off, and one has selected the music on their own it resets to normal mode.
    2. the Creative Jukebox Zen had some EQ features that the Micro does not have. It was able to speed up and slow down songs by 2x. as well it had some EQ settings to make songs sound like they were being played in different enviroments, such as bathroom, concert hall, living room and such. I think the next firmware update should have these features included.
Anyone else got some ideas? :P

    mikerules,
    No, that's not true.
Where exactly did you read that? Do you have a link?

  • Features i think should be included in future firmware..

    Hi
In a ideal world, what updates would you like to see to the firmware?
I think the time and date on the front springboard would be a welcome addition.
The ability to seach through and add radio stations.
Also and one of my bigbest niggles with ATV is how the movie trailers are (not) sorted into any particular order, this makes it very difficult to see what new ones have been released, a Latest Releases catagory would be awsome with the older ones dropping back a general catagory, or the ability to mark them as viewed.
Well thats just a few things i could think of, what other things would you like to see Apple implement into the upcoming firmware?
    Di3sel

    Yes, I understand your frustration.
You are not addressing Apple on this forum. This is a user to user forum, populated by iphone users.
If Apple ever makes this possible, they will either make an announcement or simply include it with a release. Either way, you will not find out if or when here, until or unless Apple makes an announcement.
    Sorry.

  • Future Update Suggestions

Two wonderful additions to iTunes would be:
    1. Song Associations - Could choose multiple songs that "must" be played together under shuffled playlists. For instance, Pink Floyd "Happiest Days Of Our Lives" should ALWAYS be followed by "Another Brick In The Wall Part II". And Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker" should ALWAYS be followed by "Livin'-Lovin' Maid".
    2. Formula Field - Could combine or segment other fields. For example if you have songs that you would like named "artist - Song name" but those are currently seperate fields, you could create a formula field to combine the two with a divider ( - ). Just a thought.

  • New Apple TV and future firmware/os updates ?

It might be a basic question, but I am very new to apple tv device. The new apple Tv model looks good and have plans to purchase one. What I wanted to know is, does it support new firmware/os/iTunes updates ? the way ipod touch/ iphone supports. For example if new movie websites (as of now youtube and netflix) are introduced in coming apple tv versions , then is that possible that I can also update to get such new features ?
    If Yes, how to ?

Hi, i recently factory reset my apple tv (1st gen), and do software update.
it successfully goes to firmware 3.0.2. and said its updated and no more updates available.
whats confuse me is, that in Remote 2.0 apps for iphone/ipad, stated the remote will work with apple tv 1st gen using OS 3.1.2 ?
Now.. how the heck im updating to os 3.1.2 on my atv if it says its updated already!? many thanks

  • Future iPhone suggestion on the camera aspect

I have been with the apple iphone for many years now (since june 29th of 07) and have seen nothing but progression for the apple iPhone. Since the 4 has been out I have been taking more pictures because of the clarity it gives and also because of the flash as a new bonus. I'm writing this post because I wanted know if y'all as team apple would add another feature with taking pics. As we all know the flash is in the back of the phone and it has greatly helped with taking pics in low lighting but with the camera on the front there is no flash. For the next generation of the iPhone I think it would be a great help to adding a flash in the front or for an even better look add a small display on the back of the iPhone (possibly the size of the face window). Im suggesting this so that taking self portraits would also be great look within low lighting. The reason why I'm bringing this up is because I have a young lady I'm talking to and she doesn't like taking pictures and when I finally get her do so it was kinda dark in that area. I had to turn the phone around to get the flash to support the dark area and the picture came out ok but I know it could have been better if only I could see what I was taking a picture of. But to sum it all up I am very happy with my product and there is no other phone I rather have and only over time will us iPhone users see greatness from apple. Hope to see this feature soon and thanks for listening.
