Having had some photos done at a photographers, they have passed me the disc of the slideshow, which is in avi format, however I cannot view it on my imac, I would be really grateful if someone could advise me what software I need to download that is compatible with the imac whereby I can view the slideshow and also whether I can then save the slideshow to iphoto. Hope you can help, I am not great with technology as you can probably guess.
I use Smart Converter which is free on the App Store. It is easy to use , just drag and drop the files to convert to Quicktime , takes no time and great results.

Just recently my office need to do a questionnaire type application, and since they are using an older style desktop database product (Microsoft Visual Foxpro), I tried to adapt the survey code from Oracle magazine.
The need was to have multiple questions for a user to answer, based upon a criteria they pre-select.
However getting the logic down of a different number of questions per criteria and number of answers, they settled on using the existing software (blech.....).
I would welcome any input on how to attack this problem in App Express, and will post further questions in another thread..

If you are printing to physical printer from Safari : Use Reader print button from Reader toolbar
If you want to save a PDF from Safari to your local : Use Reader Save button from the Reader toolbar.
PS: if you have PDF in read mode the hover the mouse at the bottom of the page and the floating Reader toolbar will appear.

I am creating a church-related urgent prayer chain that will receive its information through text messages being sent to a group. I do not know how big a group can be created and used within an iphone 4s, but read somewhere it should be limited to 10 phone numbers. I will be dealing with at least 200 phone numbers. I would like to create a group which holds the 200 phone numbers, and every time i need to send a text, just grab that group, type the text, and hit send. Is that possible? What application do I need to get? What can you tell me about it? Thank you!

BradenThere aren't any ports in common between both Macs except the USB, that can't be used to connect both Macs. The easiest solution is to connect both Macs with a FireWire 800 cable and get the Thunderbolt to FireWire adapter, which you will have to connect into one of the Thunderbolt ports of the 2013 iMac.
Then, to transfer files to the 2013 iMac, you have to put the 2009 iMac in Target Disk Mode, so start it holding the T key, and you will see the FireWire icon on the screen. Now, the 2013 iMac is detecting the hard disk of the 2009 iMac as an external disk, so open a Finder window and select it, under "Devices", and you will be able to transfer the data you want to your 2013 iMac.
If you have to transfer applications and settings, too, I recommend you to use Migration Assistant with both Macs connected with the FireWire cable, too > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889 -
What application should I set to open the Data_Viz Carbon Translator files?
I was looking over the files in my AW application folder. Quite a few say (in Get Info) that they should be opened with a very old OS 9 game application I happen to have. And also the "Kind" is listed as a document for that same game. That's not right. What Application should I select instead? The path to these files is: AppleWorks 6, AppleWorks Essentials, Translators, Data_Viz Carbon, Translators, and then the files. Some examples of these files are AppleWorks SS 5.0, Excel 97, and Word 5.0-Mac Win.
Thanks! I have no idea how long this has been this way.You do not need to open these files directly. They are used by AppleWorks to translate documents from and to other applications, and you can't do anything with them directly. The claim that they can be opened with some game application is simply the Finder not recognizing them and making a wild guess.

I have application where I acquire data from sensors using stain gauge and thermocouple modules with 6225M DAQ card. Also I am writing some data that i get from a joy stick to a serial port in the same application. In order to run executable file of this application what software do I need? I installed labview runtime engine in the target machine but it didn't run my program. Do I need to install any drivers for the DAQ card? i am using labview 8.6.Of course you need to install the DAQmx driver. If you have LabVIEW 8.x, when you create the installer, you have the option to install different versions of the driver ranging from a full install to a minimal one. If you have tasks saved in MAX, you would want to install MAX and export your current config. Then select to have the installer import the config on the pc with the exe.

I've gotten several .wmv files in my email and being new to Macs I don't know what application opens these files. I can download them successfully however I always get an error message that says Saffari cannot open these files. Help!
.wmv is a Windows Media file.
You can use Windows Media Player for Mac to open those.
You might also need Stuffit Expander to extract the Windows Media Player file after it's downloaded. -
Canoscan 9000F One-Touch Buttons: What 'Registered Software Application' Do I Need?
I have a Canoscan 9000F Mark II. I'm trying to get the scanner buttons to work with it -- particularly the COPY button. I've installed all available Canon software for Windows 7 (x64) for this scanner. When I hit the COPY button, I get this dialog box:
So I went into the Scanner Properties for the scanner and found this Events tab. But for every scanner button including COPY, it says "No application is registered for this event." It won't let me select anything other than Take No Action. The other choices are grayed out:
If I go to the original Canoscan 9000F (NOT the Mark II version) drivers and software page, I see this software called MP Navigator EX. I installed that just for the heck of it, since none of the Mark II apps seemed to want to register as a "registered app" for this function.
When I did that, it actually put that as a choice (the only choice) by Start This Program:
I thought that would do the trick, but then when I hit the COPY button, I get this dialog box:
So I figure that MP Navigator EX is missing from the Mark II download page for a reason -- it's for the original 9000F and is not compatible with the Mark II.
OK...so...what IS compatible?
What app do I need to "register" for this buttons in order for them to work?
I'm completely stumped. Someone please help; I'd greatly appreciate it.

The rep not only had no idea how to fix the problem -- he first tried to deny that the problem existed at all, using phrases such as, "it SHOULDN'T need any other app in order to work," "you SHOULDN'T be getting that message from the Canon software," "it SHOULD work as long as you have the Canon Toolkit installed." Uh huh. Except that I obviously do, I am, and it doesn't.
He was also completely unaware that there are TONS of forum messages and other posts on the Internet about the same or similar problem. Tons of them. A Google search came up with 193,000 results. The rep said that this is the first time he'd heard of anything like this. Which means he's either lying or blatantly ignorant.
After about 45 minutes of repeating myself, and then finally pointing him to the pretty screenshots on this thread here (which he first, when I offered to give him the link, quickly dismissed as, "that won't be necessary,"), he finally decided that the problem was going to have to be escalated to the engineers.
That was a week ago. Most likely my request just went into the round file and was quickly forgotten. I'll be VERY surprised if I hear back again on it. Suspect I'll have to call again, get another rep, and go through the same stupid routine all over again.
Nice job, Canon. How about checking your forums once in a while? Do a Google search on this problem, for crying out loud. It's NOT an isolated case, by any means. It NEEDS to be fixed, and PRONTO!

Need help with simple file sharing application
I have an assignment to build a Java File Sharing application. Since I'm relatively new to programming, this is not gonna be an easy task for me.
Therefore I was wondering if there are people willing to help me in the next few days. I will ask questions in this thread, there will be loads of them.
I already have something done but I'm not nearly halfway finished.
Is there a code example of a simple file sharing application somewhere? I didn't manage to find it.
More-less, this is what it needs to contain:
-client/server communication (almost over)
-file sending (upload, download)
-file search function (almost over)
-GUI of an application.
GUI is something I will do at the end, hopefully.
I hope someone will help me. Cheers
One more thing, I'm not asking for anyone to do my homework. I will only be needing some help in the various steps of building an application.

The user logs in with his nickname and ip address. He defines his own shared folder and makes it available for other users that log on to server.
Now each user has their own list of files from a shared folder. It's an ArrayList.
User manager class is there to store another list, a list of users that are connected with server.
When the user is searching for a particular file, he is searching through all the users and their respective files lists. Therefore for each loop inside a for each loop.
Now the problem is how to connect all that with Client and Server class and put it into one piece.
