WWAN question

I am considering getting a Fujitsui Life Book T731.  It is a touch laptop.  The one I want to get is claimed to have Verizon 3G WWAN capability.  Does this mean I can take it to the Verizon Wireless store and have it activated by purchasing a dedicated line without using a mobile hotspot?  I am already with V-Wireless and have a tablet.  I am looking for the same kind of connectivity as we experience with the Samsung tablet we have.  We are in a rural area and the tablet works all the way from 4G to 1G.  We tried to set the tablet up as a hotspot, but it didn't work great with an old Mac laptop.  I know the laptop can pick up wireless because it has worked with linksys.  The problem with the hotspot is that when the signal goes below 4G LTE, the hotspot doesn't seem to work or is very slow.
Thank you

OOPS I just realised (looking at part 86 of the hardware maintenance manual) that there are TWO mini pci-e slots :*)
I should be good now! Thanks!

  • T400 AT&T WWAN question

I know this has been discussed already, but my searches couldn't find the info I needed.
I have a T400 6475-B14 and I would like to be able to use it with an AT&T SIM.
However I'm not sure if I need to install new hardware, or if my machine already has what I need.  It's still under warranty and I'm pretty sure that the WWAN card is not a CRU.
With the battery removed it shows the "Y" WWAN symbol and the SIM card slot (with blank) is there, but there are different threads that say different things regarding the WWAN hardware.  I've tried looking on the Lenovo site, but I don't seem to be able to find what the right info.
Can anyone point me to definitive information on this?
    Thanks for any/all info!

the simplest to identify whether you have a wwan card, is to actually removed the keyboard, and see whether the mini pci-express slot under the Fn key location is occupied.

the above is the hardware manual that shows you how to remove the keyboard.

  • USB Serial CDMA Mobile WWAN CCL PPP PL2303

    Hello all,
I have an internet connection issue or issues. It seems this is a complicated issue because there are so many layers involved.
    Hardware:
    iMac9,1
2, IOGear USB Extension cables (powered)
Mobile phone manufacturer supplied USB-Serial Cable.
Huawei branded CDMA 2000 1x RTT mobile phone with Qualcomm modem and Prolific PL2303 USB-Serial Bridge.
R-UIM card for local ISP in Nepal (United Telecom Limited)
    Software:
    Mac OS 10.6.8
I have tried a few different ways to make the connection and getting a connection isn't necessarily the issue.
First I tried to use the Prolific PL2303 kext. It's widely known you have to add the devices Vendor ID and Product ID to the info.plist file for the driver to load the device at boot time. But, apparently we don't need that third-party kext because Apple has built in support for Huawei as evidenced in three existing kext files: WWANSupport, WWANSupport1, and AppleUSBMergeNub (that lives as a plugin inside IOUSBFamily.kext). Problem was that the phone was not being recognized by the system even though the Vendor ID was a match. Any guesses why?
I figured a way for the device to be recognized via the CellPhoneHelper.kext. Huawei is not listed but duplicating the 'Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM (KPC680)' IOKitPersonality and then reconfiguring it to match my Huawei device by changing the Vendor and Product IDs worked perfectly. Once I cleared the system cache files and rebooted the phone was recognized immediately as a WWAN device and I could set it up in Network Preferences. Using the Generic and CDMA settings for the modem script I am able to connect. That's where the fun bit ends.
The connection gets wonky. It randomly leaves me in limbo, seemingly connected but not able to receive any data. If I 'disconnect' using the WWAN menu, it shows me as being disconnected but actually I am not, the phone is still be connected to the tower. If I open up a serial program I can see that the phone is still sending data. The only way for me to end the connection is to unplug the USB cable. Then I can 'Connect' again and everything pretty much repeats. I will have a decent connection and then at some random point I will loose it and be unable to disconnect from the tower. This is a stationary setup; not roaming.
One thing I have noticed is that the tower will give me a different WAN address randomly. Maybe this is the issue! While connected I will see in 'ppp log' that I am being logged out and logged in again and then I am given a different LAN address and WAN address. Sometimes I will get an error, 'Could Not Authenticate" and I will be disconnected. Sometimes it appears to work seamlessly. This all happens automatically. I am not sure from which side this is being initiated, my modem or software or the ISP's?
I have poked around but don't really know what I am looking for. Is this an issue with the CDMA.ccl, or an issue with PPP, or is it a USB IOKit issue, or a kext issue? Who knows.
When typing 'sudo dmesg' in Terminal I get something that seems odd to me, but might be completely normal.
    AppleWWANSupport1: Version number - 2.0, Input buffers 16, Output buffers 4
    AppleWWANSupport1: Version number - 2.0, Input buffers 4, Output buffers 2
I took note of the Input and Output buffers in the CellPhoneHelper.kext info.plist and they are 16 and 4 for my device. I don't know why 4 and 2 immediately override those. I don't see anything in AppleWWANSupport1 that has 4 and 2 set for buffers. Could this be the issue, i.e. the connection freezing because the buffers get full? Or could it be because the mobile phone is using two channels for the modem, /dev/cu.wwan and /dev/cu.wwanCNTL and that is normal??
I took a look at the CDMA.ccl modem script. I am not a modem script designer but I noticed that 'C' is set twice in the same init, &C1&C2. I am not exactly sure why that would be, any ideas?? Track remote DCD (&C1); Unix compatible DCD control (&C2). What about 'hsreset'? Not sure but I guess the Prolific PL2303 chip handles the serial port flow control options? The literature is a bit out of date on this.
So, lots of questions and no answer so far. A bit too complicated as there are so many layers working together and this is not a supported configuration. I do see a lot of people asking similar questions but mostly it's on different systems, like Linux, etc.. and with different hardware.
Would love to hear from someone with experience, a programmer or someone familiar with Apple's IOKit and modem inits.

  • Detecting the presence of a SIM card in an internal WWAN SIM slot

Was wondering if anyone can think of a way to remotely and/or programatically detect if a SIM card has been physically inserted into a ThinkPad's internal WWAN slot?
ie Can we query through WMI or any other mechanism whether a SIM card is currently installed in a ThinkPad.
This question could equally apply to any OS / hardware version, but my current situation is for a number of ThinkPad T410s running Windows XP.
    Any ideas appreicated?

  • W520 power supply rating vs. performance question

I have had a W520 with the i2820 processor option and the quadro 1000 video for over 3 weeks now. I bought several spare 170 watt power bricks for it, but in one location I kept the 135 watt brick from my W510.
When I moved from the w500 to the w510, when I used a 90 watt w500 brick, the w510 would boot with a BIOS level message that said that the power supply was not adequate and that the machine would be stepped down to a slower speed. The reduction in performance was dramatic and noticable. (The w510 had the 45 watt consumption i920 chip and the more power hungry graphics)
When I use or boot the w520 with the 135 watt supply, there is no message. My benchmarks do not change from those registered when on the 170 watt power supply, starting with the Win 7 system benchmarks for processor and video. Further, the 135 watt brick is cooler to the touch than the 170 watt one under sustained usage (3 hours plus).
The question: given that the w520 in my configuration seems to draw less power than the hot and hungry w510, is the 135 watt supply going to work "as well as" the 170 watt one? As a briefcase lugger, any way to shed weight is valued.
Other considerations: I have no WWAN card installed, and have the CD/DVD removed and substituted with an SSD. The main drive is also SSD, bringing down somewhat the power requirements.

I remember another post, that I can't seem to find now, which refers to a software utility that displays wattage being consumed by the system.  This would be quite helpful.
Couldn't that be used to study what is being used, and how much of a power adapter is needed to operate the system?
I am trying to come up with a solution for vehicle usage, and I am afraid, it will have to be a 12V to 120v power inverter with a brick plugged into it.
Another factor will be the amount of power consumed when recharging the internal 9cell battery and the external 9cell slice. Doing this while operating the system with WiFi / WWAN active will increase the demand.

  • T430s or T431s? and a key question concerning the T431s mSATA slot

    T431s or T430s?
First let me apologize for my English, sorry if reading through this cause you any headache…
I gave away my T410 (bad bad decision) the day after I got a i7 Yoga 13 with 256G SSD, and bought a M4 256G which I planned to put in the free mSATA slot, only to find out i can't live with that yoga keyboard and that huge off-center touchpad which gets in the way all the time a few days later... anyway, end up returned that yoga13 and is using my heavily abused limping T500 now with a replaced motherboard... I was looking to go back to thinkpad and buy a T430s right away but Lenovo announced T431s one day afterwards. now i dont know what to choose, although leaning towards T431s a little bit.
things i'm looking for in my next laptop: first X1C is not an option for me, I can’t accept that screen with high dot pitch.
l  weight: less than my T410, it doesnt have to be light as an Acer S7 or Samsung 9, just reasonably lighter, and as slim as possible.
l  Processing power: doesn’t really matter, anything i5 or i7, M or U… all fine to me, I can run Lightroom, DPP and video processing applications on my desktop and I don’t play games. 8G or more RAM is needed.
l  Storage: comes with 256GB SSD or user upgradeable to 256GB SSD is an absolute minimum requirement, but I really prefer any flexibility to configure a second drive, HDD or SSD, is a big plus, preferably HDD as the second drive.
l  Screen: wouldn’t mind squeezing my eyes on a FHD screen, but I can only settle on a 900p, afterall I’m looking for a thinkpad, have to live with that screen, right?
l  Tough… every one of my laptop gets dropped once or twice… many many times in the case of my old T410… so it needs to be tough…
    l  Not much else…
So, T431s is lighter, slimmer, user replaceable 7mm SSD, mSATA available (a concerning question later), all good, and I like the new look. And I don’t care much about the indicators, lid lock, flipped logo or that new touchpad (I think I can manage, maybe…).
So what do I have to sacrifice if I choose T431s? removable battery, ultrabay for optical drive and HDD, full voltage cpu, and possibly a couple hundred dollars… since we don’t know for sure how much optional parts will cost in customized build, and of course the risk of buying an unproven, newly designed product. Did I miss any other key point?
If I didn’t miss many advantages that T430s have, I probably should go with T431s, it was all good until I found a video which shows how to disassembled a T431s (http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNTI5NzIxMzg4.html) and at about 4 mins in, it shows that the WWAN card is secured by a single retaining screw in the middle on the outer edge, unlike typical mSATA SSD which should be secured on the 2 corners of the board. Does this mean users can no longer install a mSATA SSD on T431s? if so, I can only have one 7mm SSD instead of having OS installed on a 256G mSATA, and have a 500G HDD to storage all the photos and videos, which I was intended to do, that maybe a deal breaker…
I don’t really understand these hardware upgrades, can some one please tell me for sure whether the mSATA slot on T431s, as shown in the video, can be used to intall a regular mSATA SSD. If I can, I’ll probably still struggle to make the decision, if it can’t be used to install SSD, T430s it is.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Kai
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

thanks, yes, it's the new NGFF M.2, and the new form factor is a lot more complicated than the old mSATA slot, different dimensions for different storage size, and it maybe single side for WWAN, cashe drive, or double side for actual SSD perfermance...
if i'm gonna get a T431s, i'll just buy the 320G 5400RPM low end drive, make a recovery media from Win8, and reset to factory setting after intall a 512GB 840 Pro, or the much cheaper M4...

  • Urgent: Please help with T440p WWAN

I have a simple question since I'm planning to buy a new thinkpad t440p
Does all models have a WWAN connection ?
Resellers in my Country doesn't give any custimization options and when I've been to the shop to get it they only said that there is a sim slot under the battery does this mean that I can use mobile data as soon as I get it or what ?
in the device manage I opened network adapters and I found the following list
    bluetooth device
    bluetooth device
    intel centrino advanced n6235
    Intel ethernet connection i217-lm
there is another PCI simple communication controller unidentified device
    the laptop has
    core I5 extreme vpro
    500gb hdd
    4gb ram

    Hi,
T440p laptops do not all come with a WWAN card installed.  Most - but not all - have WWAN antennas installed but may or may not have a card.  The SIM slot is always there as it's part of the generic T440p case.
The PSREF page may help you figure this out if you can find your MT-M (machine type-model).  Otherwise post your MT-M here and someone may be able to track down the exact specs.

     thanks a lot

    1. The WWAN card between the X200 and X230 are not compatible.
    2. It is ready for wwan if it has the wwan antennas installed.

  • T400 WWAN card Change

    Hi!,
I'm thinking in buy a new laptop, a T400. am trying find some pre-configured system in the Personal Systems Reference (PSREF), I found it, but the configuration I choose (2767R9U) come with Verizon WWAN card. My question is, Can I buy the AT&T card and change it?, I ask this because am not sure if this configuration come with a SIM reader slot. A familiar has a similar incindent with a vaio, it has verizon card, and when he want to change for a AT&T card, the computer doesn't have a SIM reader Slot, so I want to confirm it before buy the laptop.
    Thanks a lot,
    Sorry about my english!!.

Currently, I have two ThinkPads model T400. They are both WWAN upgradeable, meaning that the antennas and SIM card slot are in place but missing the actual WWAN card.
So rest assured that you will not have a problem. Assuming that you will be purchasing the appropriate IBM/Lenovo AT&T WWAN card.

  • Another Boot Camp Question (Internet Security this time)

Still doing my "homework" to prepare to install Windows (I will be using Vista Ultimate for awhile to start).
I've been reading a bit here about how Windows can be vunerable just by being connected online.
My routher does have the firewall on, and I'm also looking at a few security suites (mainly Norton IS 2009 and Kaspersky). Feel free to chime in with recommendations for or against, but my main question is this:
I assume after installing windows it will update itself. Should I install Windows without being connected, then install a security suite, then reconnect to do updates and registrations, etc? Is there a recommended procedure for that based on anyone's experience?
    Thank you.

    *My NewOsProcedure before iNet connect*
When you ask youself "In whose best interest is the continuing existance of viruses", the answer is companies who sell Anti Virus software. To protect my access to internet content made possible by software written & constantly being security updated by Microsoft with a second/third party's software is absurd. You don't have to agree with this or believe me saying that I've never suffered for not using one.
In Windows 7 I admit to missing use of free online One Care mostly for Registry cleaning which I would only trust to Microsoft. Also miss XP Sysintenals utilities that scanned for rootkit & defragmented the registry
although "Autoruns" still works in W 7 to show things loaded that would otherwise be unknown.
Windows on first start up leaves you vulnerable to some extent unless you close the holes.
1)Right click Computer icon Desktop->Properties->Advanced System settings
->Remote Tab Disable Remote assistance, make sure Remote desktop is not selected.
2)From Control Panel->Windows Firewall off by default in earlier releases, differs in windows 7 but be sure that it is turned on. In W 7, using a router I have Home Net blocking everything and Public more open allowing only Core networking element. Disabling Messenger, iTunes Media player as they turn themselves on, does not prevent them from performing acceptably unless perhaps you are sharing media.
    3) In Network connections properties, I retain only Client for MS networks which can be unchecked, QOS Packet Sch, IP 6 & IP 4 and disable items in the "Sharing Tab" which may be new with W 7.
    4) Right click Computer icon Desktop->Manage->Services&Apps->Services -
Depending on whether you are sharing, using remote desktop, wireless, things I'm not into, these are services that I disable (Some may not be on pre
    W 7:)
Bluetooth, Branch Cache, Computer Browser, Home Group, Internet connection Sharing, iPod, Media Center Extender, Net.Tcp Port Sharing, Offline Files, Peer anything, PNRP machine name pulication, Remote Access Conn..., Remote Destop (all), Remote Registry, Routing & Remote access, Secondary Logon, Server, Smart Card, Tablet PC, UPNP device host, Windows Biometric, Wind. Card space, Windows Connect Now, Windows M. Player Sharing, Windows Remote Mgmt, Windows Search (this is personal, I disable drive indexing as well etc. I've seen that Ms. has included *Wolfram Alpha in Bing. *Who's gonna bother arguing with a MacArthur Genius if he suggests that the Universe is a giant computer? ), WinHTTP web Proxy..,WLan AutoConfig and WWAN AutoConfig. In Services, you do not want to disable anything critical to OS start up.

  • Ideapad S12: Get WWAN started with Dell 5530 Card

    Hello there,
I bought an ideapad S12 (Intel Atom 1,6 GHZ, NVidia ION 256 MB, 2 GB RAM). So far so good until I detect that indeed there is a sim card slot, but no internal wwwan card built in. Didn't matter anyway, the kind lady at the lenovo hotline told me, that I have to buy the Ericsson f3507g-Card.
I thought to be very clever and bought me the identical Dell 5530 WWAN card at only a fraction of the price. After hours and hours reading installation advices in several forums I was able to install the dell drivers onto my netbook and after deactivating the pin query on my sim card, the card is also detected by the data manager from my provider (3datamanager at www.drei.at).
And (finally) here comes my question: are there additional antennas for WWAN in the netbook? If no, I likely have to buy an antenna and screw it into my (yet) maiden netbook ;-) Has anyone experience with assembling WWAN antennas in S12-netbooks? Which model should I use and where should I put it?
    Thanks in advance

  • X61 WWAN can I replace preinstalled card from Verison to GSM type.

    Hi,
I have a new x61 I have purchased in the USA, with a preinstalled wwan card for Verison services in the USA, however, my mobile services provider is Orange, 3G GSM system.
My x61 model # is 7675-59U and is equipped with an auxiliary antena attached to the right side of the screen (telescopic one).
OS Windows XP PRO, 4GB Ram (only 3 usable).
My question is: can I change/replace the existing preinstalled Verison card (by Sierra) with another card which will work with GSM providers, I have found available, unlocked, Sierra GSM wwan cards  #MC8775 on Ebay, these are the cards listed at the Lenovo System Service Parts list.
    Will the Bios support it?
Will the existing aux. antena support it?
If yes, what else (beside a contract with the providers) would I need to be able to configure it and activate the services.
    Thank you!
    Avi.

I have not done this myself but based on the specs and other posts you can do this.
If you buy a non-Lenovo aftermarket MC8775 you will need a hacked BIOS to stop the startup warning error (search for Zender).

  • Getting started ... Help!!! (A TRUE beginner's question)

I suspect EVERYONE in the world understands what I'm about to ask, but ... I don't.
I just received my new ThinkPad T410i.
The instructions say, "1. Install the battery pack. 2. Connect to power."
BUT ... in the battery pack bay, so to speak, there's this little plastic tag, with arrows, indicating that I'm either suppose to pull this out or push it in. There's a small cardboard or plastic insert in the slot--which comes part way out when you pull on the plastic tag. And then you can take it the rest of the way out or slip it back in.
WHAT IS THIS??????????? And ... what am I supposed to do with it? Just put the battery in over the little plastic push/pull tag and pretend it's not there?!?
My apology: I've lived in the desktop world since ... I don't know ... 35 years ago? Something like that. Sooooo, laptops are COMPLETELY new to me.
And, if I can say this, the instructions should be far, far clearer for folks like me.

    @SoNouveau,
I think you are refering to the slot for the SIM Card which is used for WWAN connection. If you are not using the 3G connection, ignore the plastic tag and leave it in there.

  • T500 W WAN questions

It's time to regale you all again with my overly-annoying basic questions!
according to Lenovo, my T500 is 'Mobile broadband ready'. Does this mean I can shove in any WWAN card and expect it to work? Or will only the Lenovo-supplied cards (like the ones for sale in the online store) work? Does the antenna come pre-installed?
    Thanks.
    CJ

The WWAN antennas are pre-installed in a 'Mobile broadband ready' ThinkPad, and you will definitely need to use a Lenovo supplied WWAN card.
I can personally confirm that the Ericsson WWAN card available through the Lenovo Australia web site does work well in a T400 2764CTO with the Telstra Mobile Broadband Next G service (note this is NOT the Bigpond Next G service).
    Cheers,
    Bill

  • Twist WWAN Upgrade - add GPS capability??

I've confirmed with technical support that the S230u twist can include a WWAN.
(Available-- But I can not find this WWAN option while configuring/ordering your unit build.)
I've tracked down the part number from tech support... 04W3786.
I've read the forum thread on upgrading the WWAN on Thinkpad,  but support told me I would have to send my unit to Lenovo for the upgrade.
Is this a user serviceable part?
Will this WWAN upgrade my Twist unit to include GPS capabilities,  as referenced on this page?
    http://www.lenovo.com/products/us/laptop/thinkpad/
Thanks for any information..    Support transfers me to "Sales"   and then sales transfers me back to "Tech support" and I'm already feeling frustration over a fairly simple question.

    Hi, westmichigan
According to this page for the Twist, the WWAN card can be replaced by a user. As for this adding GPS capabilities, I think that this would help and make it GPS-capable, but I cannot say for sure. The card can be replaced by as user, however, using the steps here in the Hardware Maintenance Manual (pg. 63)
    Hope it helps,
    Adam
