X crashes when ending X session [SOLVED]

Hello,
I am suddenly having a problem where X crashes when I end an X session. I am using the slim login manager, the fglrx driver and wmii as a window manager. When my machine first boots, slim starts and I can log into X, and everything works fine, but my machine locks when I try to end my X session. The screen goes blank and neither Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, nor Ctrl+Alt+Delete nor Ctrl+Alt+Fn work. However, I hear that my laptop fan turns on high so it sounds like X is in a tight loop somewhere using all the CPU. I must reboot to recover. If instead of ending my X session through wmii's quit command I kill X with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, I get the same result except that my screen doesn't go blank. Wmii ends and I'm left with an immobile mouse and my wallpaper and X in a tight loop.
Now, my Xorg.conf, .xinitrc, and slim.conf have not changed in months and have been working perfectly, so I'm just about 100% sure it's not a configuration problem. I do note that this has been occurring since I upgraded xorg-server (1.4.0.90-6 -> 1.4.0.90-8), xkeyboard-config (1.1-1 -> 1.2-1) and xf86-video-ati (6.7.197-2 -> 6.8.0-2) a couple of days ago. Has anyone else experienced any problems with X and the recent update?
EDIT: OK, I set up telnet on the machine and found that when X dies and the machine locks up, I can still telnet in and reboot the machine. The odd part is when I look at the process list (ps -e) when the machine is locked, I don't see any X processes. I can see and kill my login process, but the machine stays locked up. I checked my Xorg.0.log.old after restarting and I see:

It seems something is segfaulting when trying to exit X. Aaargh.
OOPS: I posted too quickly. A little googling found this Debian bug report. I switched my keyboard model from "latitude" to "pc101" and all was well. Looks like this version of the X server has some problems.

Edit:
Well turns out, the synaptics error pops out when running openbox too. I Ctrl+Atl+F1ed, and there is was again, but still openbox starts and works fine! My touchpad works fine, with scrolling and all that.
How do I get awesome to run?
EDIT:
Turns out the Synaptics driver issue was totally irrelevant. I sorted that out (double loading of drivers) by reading https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=835318
But awesome does not start. I get that nvidia screen and then get thrown back at the console, with no errors or anything!

  • Connect Training Classroom Crashing after Ending Breakout Session

Upgraded to 9 on our on site server.  Everything working well EXCEPT the last two times we have had meetings with breakout rooms, when we close the breakout room the Main room refreshes.  It causes all the pods to reset to default, so we lose audio, video and the share pod.  Some people even get thrown out of the room.  It has only happened when there are more than 5 people in a breakout.  If its just  one or two people in the breakout it doesn't happen. Anyone else having this issue? I have a broadcast going for the next four days with many breakout sessions planned.  Ill update if it keeps on happening or not.

Hosted or Licensed? You might want to reach out to Adobe quickly and let them know of this issue. If you're licensed, they might be able to offer you a room on their Hosted site temporarily to run your upcoming meetings while they look into the problem. No reason you should have an unsuccessful Meeting just because the software is flaking out on you.

  • Compiz crash when executing a video [SOLVED]

I'm currently running Arch 64 using Compiz and Emerald.
Whenever I try to play a video using Mplayer or VLC, regardless of the video, as soon as the player opens X crashes and I'm thrown back to tty1, with errors appearing from different programs having no resources. I'm still in my learning stages of Linux, so where could I find some logs to look at and post here so I can possibly get a better look at the issue? I'm guessing I'm looking for X server logs. If I can find the logs for this I'll probably be able to fix it myself, I notice log files in Linux are very verbose.
I doubt that hardware resources are a problem, I have Radeon 4870 and 6GB of DDR2 RAM with a Q9550 processor.

Fixed it, turns out it was giving out because it wasn't set to displaying on my X server, I had to set VLC to X11 and audio to ALSA.
Why it didn't automatically go to ALSA beats me, for some reason my Intel audio card moved to device 0 when it was set as device 1, which it was, yesterday? :S. Oh well.

  • [SOLVED] Random crashes when playing videos on Atom J1900 / Intel HD

    Hi,
Following my first thread (which has been gladly solved, finally), I'm still getting stuck on the "crashes when playing videos" thing.
FIY here are the specs, copied from my original thread:
I've just bought a Gigabyte Brix to be used as an HTPC. The exact model is GB-BXBT-1900.
I've installed 4 GB of 1.35V RAM (Corsair CT51264BF160B), which is supported by this model, and a Kingston SSD (V300 60GB).
Then of course, I've installed Arch x64 with a base system and Xorg with DE (Xfce).
It can happen after 2 or 50 minutes (it rarely goes beyond this limit), mainly when using VLC, but I could reproduce the same behavior with SMPlayer or even Kodi: the display freezes and I can no longer move the cursor, use the keyboard (to change TTY for example) or access the machine remotely. I'm forced to press the power button for 5 seconds and boot again.
No sign of any warning in the logs, no high temperature on any sensor, nothing that could help me find what to blame. The wired keyboard attached does not show blinking LEDs so I'm assuming it's not a kernel panic.
The thing is, those crashes happen *only* when playing videos. Otherwise the machine is extremely stable and can stay up and running for days or weeks without a crash. But if you play a video on it, be prepared to reboot within the next half-hour.
So I'm assuming this has something to do with the display driver, or its configuration. I did not change anything to the default one, just added "intel_pstate=disabled" to the boot command line as advised in another thread, but it didn't help.
And now some fresh system informations you might need:

Hello, i too have random freeze without any "usable" info.
The blame "may" (well i think it is) be a "baytay + i915 kernel drivers" fault, these thread are intresting :
    - https://github.com/OpenELEC/OpenELEC.tv/issues/3726
what intresting is that there is path (for use of "legacy-turbo"), sory not remenber where i get it
    -- gpu-drm-i915-fix-vlv-crash.txt --
Revert back to legacy turbo for vlv, fixes random crashes.

Lightroom 4 crashes when trying to open the slideshow module. I spent over three hours with both Adobe and Apple tech support and we know it is a permission issue but have not been able to get it solved.  It started with the last upgrade to 10.8

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
The first step should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word, all lower case, with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • HFM Web Session Crashing when selecting certain brands

I have an issue where one user is expereincing the following:
    HFM  - Sys9 - version 9.3.1.2
When a user selects a specific custom2 dimension (in this case a brand member) when trying to input data in a DEF the web sesion crashes.
    Other relevant info:_
    1. Only one user is experiencing this issue.
    2. User has msxml 4.0 sp2 & msxml v6 installed on the local computer (as recommended by Oracle)
    3. IE crashes when certain brands are selected
    4. If Firefox is used then web session does not crash when the same brands are selected
    5. User has the same IE version as rest of the users
    6. Only certain brands are causing this issue. To emphasise, it does not crash for other users and nor does it crash when using Firefox.
Any ideas om how to solve this issue. Thanks in advance

Here is a thought .... Do the crashing brands have any special chars in them ? like "_" etc.
Compare Tools->Internet Options->Advanced settings between the crashing user and a non crashing user.
Not sure ilf this will solve it ... but its a place to start

Crap thought that text was all the characters I was allotted, not just the title.
Anyway I wouldn't have even posted this if you guys would have allowed me to reply to the already existing thread I found through google. Said about 20 or so people had the same problem and no one found the contributor's answer useful, including myself.
Anyway, I use Firefox, because it is one of two (other being internet explorer) that Trend Micro's security package includes protection with. Same with spyware blaster which I also use but Trend Micro is the deal breaker. Also I like Firefox 4 and your ad blocker is better than google chrome's. However if I continue to have problems with clearing my browser history it is back to Opera and Google Chrome for me. IObit Security supports both of them, it also seems to be the best security system I have ever come across, I will just pay for their subscription and stop using Trend Micro.
This is a very big problem I hope it is being addressed. Only addon I have is your ad blocker. Also this is completely on your end, not ours. I am the perfect test, my computer is brand new, and by brand new I mean I just started using it the other day, the same day my firefox browser kept crashing as I attempted to clear my browsing history.
Windows 7, 8GBs RAM, AMD athlon II quad core 2.90 GHz
Can't even clear an hours worth of browsing history without firefox crashing.

  • [SOLVED] kwin crash when using OpenGL mode after upgrading to 4.7

I have a Ideapad Y460 (Graphic: ATi Mobility Radeon 5650). Recent days I upgrade my KDE from 4.7RC (4.6.95) to 4.7 (4.7.00) and also Catalyst from 11.6 to 11.7.
    Update:
The problem has been solved. I used [kde-unsupported] source and kdebase-workspace package in that source contains OpenGL ES support while Catalyst doesn't support it. Thank @csslayer.
But when I use OpenGL mode, kwin crashed. I run
    kwin --replace
to start kwin, then the Desktop Effect shows:
OpenGL compositing (the default) has crashed KWin in the past.
This was most likely due to a driver bug.
If you think that you have meanwhile upgraded to a stable driver,
you can reset this protection but be aware that this might result in an immediate crash!
Alternatively, you might want to use the XRender backend instead.
And there is a re-enable button. But the systemsettings window crashed when I pushed it.
I checked ~/.xsessiong-error and it shows this:
X Error: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter) 3
    Major opcode: 20 (X_GetProperty)
    Resource id: 0x1c0015a
I downgrade Catalyst but the problem still exists while KDE4.7 RC run well on my laptop. So I'm not sure whether it is caused by kwin or by Catalyst 11.7 or other packages.
Does anyone know the solution? Thanks for your patience.

I found an solution. Go to Settings/Mail, Contact, Calendar/Fetch new data and than enable Push and choose to fetch hourly or every 30 minutes. In this case your iPad will stay connected to wifi even when smart cover is closed. If you select Manualy than wifi connection will be terminated when in sleep mode.

  • Fcp crashed when it reaches the end of tape

When I 'capture now' HDV footage to FCP 6.0.3 using sony HDV firewire, FCP crashes when it reaches the end of the tape. Basically, I've been working around the problem by hitting 'esc' just before the end, but it sure is annoying. Anybody else? Any ideas?

Are you using Capture Now or are you logging your clips then Batch capturing?

My problem is that my X dissapears if i hold about any key board button. Even when i'm typing this post i have to be carefull not to hold the backspace to delete some text.
also i'm running a dual monitor screen setup and when i move my mouse from one screen to the other it passes on to the other screen but it also stays on the first screen.
and i'm not able to see my virtual consoles anymore, it does switch to them but i don't see anything. when my X crashes it's the same, i should be able to see my console but nothing. it does respond however, when i press the up key and then press enter it starts x again because my last command was startx.
i'm running a very minimalistic Openbox with tilda on an updated arch directly updated from the official repo with the nvidia driver.
    this is all very anoying

  • IPhoto crashes when I write name on people's faces. Can I solve this problem?

From 2-3 weeks my iPhoto crashes when I select Faces and I add the name of people which is in the photo... can I make something ?
Those problems starts when iPhoto rebuild my library because it was damaged...

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and check to see if the same problem persists.  If it does make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a viable backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
If the problem didn't repeat in the new library then your current library is damaged. In that case make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a viable backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    3- Sudo -S nano

Since then I even tried OpenJDK instead of Oracle JDK, tried downgrading to Eclipse 4.2.1, unsintalled and reinstalled everything, tried the Eclipse portable version from their site, and the problem was still there. What should I do? What can cause this, it didn't happened 1 week ago, what's gone wrong?
I even tried removing everything from workspaces but my source code, and all .eclipse and sh!t, I even tried running it as another user, and it still crashes on help -> welcome or every fifth minute in best case.
