X: drive HP Pavilion d7 HD crash
0) PROBLEM: no Win 7 Home Premium OA boot/ goes into SMART check failing error HD1 (301). reboot gives X: boot
1) Boots to boot drive X: (whatever that is!) and includes mystery G: drive.
Drive letters changed/incremented from pals’ *identical* machine ie:
Command <dir /a> reveals my D: is pal’s C:, E: is pal’s D:, F: is pal’s E:, G: = pal’s F:, X: and G: both aren’t on pal’s machine at all (pal’s Command Prompt is run from within Win 7 itself, while my Prompt is within HP Recovery Mgr>Computer Checkup ). Hopefully this already makes sense to you. I see few clear answers on web about where X: is being read in from - and no info on G: whatsoever. more in diagnostics...
DIAGNOSTICS:
HP Extended Disk Test (safe mode) diagnostics:
Initial Error Log Start Time on tests give error Dates 1/1/11, then after several tests error Dates are actual 7/27/14 (with 1/11 dates remaining earlier). FAIL ID:
90DX6W-67T76L-MFPX1G-60B203…..Hard disk 1.
Drive Scrubber boot disk initially listed no HD at all, but today it does indeed list a drive (which at least probably explains the 1/1/11 problem above?).
chkdsk says “…found no problems…” on all disks (Fdisk appears no longer available in Wind 7 Home Premium OA!? )
Mystery X: and G: partitions, as in #1 below, when booted from internal drive. However, Kaspersky’s boot disk in fact displays volumes correctly with C, D and E drives, plus a drive named “sda1” (system partition), which looks like the internally booted X: drive (w boot folder). Presumably that almost answers this question, but not #1’s behavior below, where internal boot bumps CD:, D>E, E>F.
HP Recovery Manager> Microsoft System Restore (option 1 doesn’t touch Personal Files) says:
“No restore points have been created…” (on my pal’s identical machine, these seem created automatically!/hmmm). I didn’t OK the undoable-Recovery.
___________________________________DETAILS:
2) DISK IMAGE: Can I use installers from my pal… it’s the exact same HP machine (we each bought the same computer at Best Buy). If yes, will this cause either of us any problems with dupe machine name or IP addresses, etc?
AND 3) is it possible to boot on an external USB drive (with or without an internal HD)?
I’m a former Mac user (and Roxio/Mac EQA tech) from the first Mac days now living in a Mac user’s PC-Command_Prompt nightmare. In middle of my Win 7 backup the hard drive “appears” to have crashed. I was gonna learn Windows after this backup! So much for figuring a drive would last at least a couple of years/sob…HELP (and thanks in advance for helping me to Love Windows…). I bought my HP Pavilion d7-1340dx notebook at the same time (and same exact model) as roomate’s, so comparison of drives at least helps the questions.
I've got System Mechanic from Target, but don't wanna use it if it doesn't fix this. Never posted anywhere before, but am de$perate Mac guy! HP laptops seem to have BAD problems keeping the hard drives cool (same with my pal's).
Cheers, Bryan, SF Bay area
Thanks for the reply - yes, I know the drive is going, going and I'm happy to have backed stuff up and get a new HD, but didn't know about "Create a system image," and so have no burned Create Image discs for my machine. That's basically what I on about - either using roomie's Image (20 discs!), or repairing partition and burning my own from a hard drive that appears to work with an external fan on it....Heat's a problem with HP laptops, since both roomie and buddy both have heat issues...
re: Question 2) DISK IMAGE - The OS "installers" is a Mac term for what PC's loosely call the "ControlPanel>System Security Backup Your Computer>Create a system Image" (burn your own CD's) which I only learned about during this crash.
I only made the "Create a system repair disc" but roomie has *identical* machine and I just burned her System Image discs.
Another forum said "...both computers must share the same set of discs or another set of discs should be ordered from HP..."
Question is what untoward affects would this have with net IPs, etc. I'm assuming with the 20 DVD+R's I did yesterday that it backed up all of her C: drive, meaning after Restore'ing her Create'd Image I'd have to delete her files from my computer, right?
re: Question 1) X: drive - given that I've been able to Backup files with an external fan pointed at my (overheated) Hard Drive, I was going to burn my own Create Image from my machine before it quits.
I suppose these are stupid Win Questions, but the last PC I worked on was an early 386. IF System Mechanic has a chance to fix this partition X: thing, say so and I'll try it, since fdisk appears unavailable in Win 7.
Don't know who you are or where you're at, but thanks to god and science for your input.
Bryan

I have a new hard drive as my old one crashed. Everything seemed to transfer fine except for my entire iTunes library. It shows all of my old songs, but when I click on one it states "the song could not be used as the original file could not be found.would you like to locate it".
Either how do I locate it, and I've tried every trick I know, or how do I restore all of my songs from one of two sources. I have my old hard drive backedup on an external drive which should have all of my songs, and I have most of my songs on my old iPhone 3S which I'm using as a backup iPod.The "missing file" error happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, one of its parent folders, or the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout, or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place. In the case of a library moved from one system to another there are also potential permissions issues. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to Get Info, then click No when asked to try to locate the track. (Due to a bug in iTunes 12 you currently have to say No twice!) Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, a folder renamed, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions. If the difference between the two paths is an additional Music folder in one path then this is a layout issue. I can explain further if that is the case.
In some cases iTunes may be able to repair itself if you go through the same steps with Get Info but this time click Locate and browse to the lost track. It may then offer to attempt to automatically fix other broken links.
If another application like Windows Media Player has moved/renamed the files then the chances are that subtle differences in naming strategies will make it hard to restore the media to the precise path that iTunes is expecting. In such cases, as long as the missing files can be found somewhere, you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes. See this post for an explanation of how it works.
See also Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

External hard drive that stored music has crashed. How can I safely get my songs from my I Pod back onto computer into a new external drive?

I have Adobe Photoshop CS5 installed in two computers. The hard drive of my home computer crashed and I had no time to deactivate the software. The hard drive needed to be formatted. How can I activate the software CS5 again ? Thank you for an answer.
If it's the same computer, same CPU and same HD, no de-activation or re-activation should be necessary.
Install from scratch and apply all updates manually.
Please do a forum search. I and others have repeatedly answered the question about failed updates of CS5 a whole bunch of times recently.
Bottom line: the Adobe auto updater is utterly useless in CS5 and prior versions. You need to download the updates and apply them manually yourself.
I and others have even supplied the links for Mac and Win, which you haven't even bothered to specify. -
I'm trying to download my Master CS6 onto a new hard drive because my old one crashed and I keep getting a message saying " Cannot write the file" or "I don't have permission to access the requested resource." ? What does this mean?
Yes- it is a Mac. I went through adobes system requirements and re- downloaded supportive software. The notice seems to happen near the end of the down load with the messages above. I'll look into your suggestion. Thank you- appreciated.

I've tried everything I can think of, anyway. (Wouldn't fit in the title) Pardon my nubbishness in advance. Sorry, I've been searching for the answer for two days (on and off) for a solution, but to no avail.
So I was using CS5.1 for a while with no problems. Everything went well until one day it gave me an error on hardware acceleration. All it did was give me a scrubby zoom. I spent a few days researching it and eventually gave up on finding a solution.
So I thought I'd try out CS6, to see if it fixed anything. It doesn't. It's worse, even. It crashes randomly at various actions (like switching tools, changing layers, saving), and it crashes without fail if I use liquefy or transform a layer and then try to duplicate it (I'm just trying to make a gif, darnit!) If I'm just drawing and erasing and using undo, it doesn't crash as much. Scrubby zoom is still a problem.
My driver is up to date according to the HP website:
Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver2010-12-03 , Version:8.15.10.2189, 78.05M
It's really old, but HP isn't updating it. I've tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it. Moot point.
The driver is compatible with OpenGL.
I also tried this driver, but apparently it's not compatible.
Additional info/things I've tried:
Processor: Intel Core i5 CPU M 450 @ 2.40GHZ 2.40 GHz
RAM: 4GB
System type: 64-bit
No third-party plug-ins.
60% memory available to Photoshop.
Photoshop is updated to the latest version.
Windows is updated (I spent a freggin day trying to figure that out because updates were frozen, and then spent 3 hours trying to figure out why F8 wouldn't bring up advanced boot options so I can delete old update logs so I can update windows so I can get photoshop working--TO NO AVAIL)
GPU support option is greyed out, so it's already turned off.
When it crashes, all Windows says is "Adobe Photoshop CS6 has stopped working".
Then the details afterwards note "files that help describe the problem", which include...

So I looked up other issues regarding "aticfx64.dll", and nothing helps. The most similar thread I could fine was http://forums.adobe.com/message/5149760, but I don't have anything related to ATI, so it doesn't help. > _< Everything was working fine before, so I don't know why this happened.
Please help. ; ^; I always try to figure it out on my own before I ask for help, but I'm totally stumped. If you need any additional info, please tell me. I'll try to get it (if I know how to access it). I'll keep searching for answers.

HP Pavilion Elite e9220f crashing repeatedly after critical update
HP Pavilion Elite e9220f, Windows 7 64-bit.
Crashed on 5/9/13, wouldn't reboot. Freezed with blinking cursor in upper left corner of blank screen after HP splash screen.
Changed HD from RAID to IDE mode in BIOS and Windows started but crashed with blue screen on trying to install the IDE controller driver automatically after start-up. Blue screen crash codes indicated the hard drive controller was the source.
System Restore lists several critical updates for Windows over the last few weeks. I ran System Restore in safe mode to 5/4/13 restore point, then rebooted to safe mode for confirmation of restore, and it then booted normally and successfully installed the IDE controller driver, but then crashed again as soon as subsequent critical updates were reinstalled. Disabling Windows Update via services.msc then restoring to 5/4/13 again finally stabilized the system, able to use normally without crashing.
To try to solve the underlying problem preventing further critical updates and allow me to turn on Windows Update again, I found the firmware update on HP's site for the hard drive, WDC WD10EADS-65M2B0, from version B0 to BX. However, after updating the firmware to BX, Windows now crashes upon starting even still at restore point 5/4/13 or even all the way back to 4/28/13, and now before it can even attempt to install the IDE controller. In otherwords, updating the firmware made it worse. The system is again unsable.
Anyone else having this problem?
JoEbYXI agree that it is inexplicable, if that was indeed the case.
If the PC has a single drive, then it makes zero sense to use RAID mode. RAID is an acronym which stands for redundant array of inexpensive disks. The use of any form of RAID (0-5) requires a minimum of two physical hard disks.
AHCI and IDE are the only viable options with a single hard disk.
Did you make a backup or image of the hard disk?
What is the installed OS?
You will need to enable the SATA msAHCI driver in the operating system as this Microsoft document explains. Use the Microsoft Automated Fixit on the document to resolve the issue. It will take care of the registry change required. Afterwards you will need to enter the BIOS and verify the SATA mode is set to AHCI and if not, change it to AHCI before the next boot into Windows.

How can I restore my iPod touch data to a new hard drive when the old one crashed
My computer crashed and I want to put the contents of my iPod Touch back on the new hard drive. How do I do this without accidentally Syncing and copying over my data? The vast majorioty of the music on my iPod is my own from DCs I own.
You should probably disable the autosync functionality first by going to Edit -> Preferences, clicking the Devices tab, and enabilng the prevent iPods,iPhones, and iPads from automatically syncing option.
Next, authorize the new computer with your iTunes Account. In iTunes, choose Store -> Authorize This Computer and enter in the correct credentials.
If possible, either copy a backup file from your old computer to your new one or create a new backup of your iPod in iTunes before letting it sync. To do this, right->click on your iPod Touch from under the Devices section in the left hand pane of iTunes and choose Backup. You might also want to take a look at this article to see what it all included in the backup.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766
Now onto synced content such as music, videos, photos, etc. For iTunes purchases you can copy them back into iTunes by choosing File -> Transfer Purchases. For all other nonpurchased iTunes content, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering different software availbable to assist you with this task.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2452022?start=0&tstart=0
Once the backup has been made and all other synced content such as music, videos, and photos are back in your iTunes library, restore your iPod from that backup you made earlier. Here is more on backing up and restoring your iPod.

May computer has started crashing with either re-booting or BSOD's. I am running the system with Vist 64 bit, all original hardware (I have not changed out anything) :
AMD Phenom 9850 Quad-core processor 2.50 GHz
6GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 9800GT
I have run all the hardware diagnostics (PC Dr.) both in dos and from windows and eveything has passed. I have formatted and re-installed everything and have made sure everything is up to date. But my screen still flickers or blue screen of death, or re-boots randomly. I keep getting the error that nvlddmkm device driver has stopped functioning or needs to be recovered. I am at a loss as to where else to check..Hi,
Download the latest NVIDIA video card driver from the NVIDIA web site to your desktop. Download Driversweeper and use it to remove the NVIDIA stuff. Read the directions. Then install the NVIDIA driver.
Check here for software, bios and firmware updates. Look at the updates listed under VISTA
You might also try removing the video card and switching to on board video to see if your video card is the problem.

My hard drive on my macbook pro crashed, can I get my music back on it from my iPhone?
when my hard drive crashed, I lost everything off my macbook. is there a way to import my music back on my computer from my iphone?
No. Use your MacBook's backup to restore your files. (If you don't have a backup, I'm sorry, your files are gone.)

I just updated to firefox 3.6.8 this morning after getting prompted to update as I started firefox. The firefox update successfully installed page said that I should update to the latest adobe flashplayer, so I did that as well, although that installation failed for whatever reason. I figured that I would update it later. I started watching live streaming videos on a website, and it was working for awhile, but firefox started to not respond. I tried opening up task manager, but even that started to lag and took minutes to open. The problem seemed resolved for awhile, but firefox started to not respond off and on, task manager stopped responding completely, explorer crashed, and my computer blue screened. It wouldn't even get off the blue screen after minutes of waiting, so I shut my laptop down manually. I'm positive that this couldn't have been a virus, since I only visited my usual websites, and I have both adblock plus and noscript installed. As for my laptop now, it won't boot to windows vista. I tried the hard drive test and failed. Now my laptop isn't even able to turn off no matter how long I hold down the power button. It's not an old laptop, so I doubt that it was just time for it to die.
I have always been a fan of firefox, but this is just horrible. I don't know if it was firefox's fault but it sure seems like it...
I'm currently on my older laptop, since my other one is obviously dead now. My broken one had vista installed and again, firefox 3.6.8 version.I have the same problem. I have never had a problem with Firefox before, and use it as my main browser. However recently, after updating to 3.6.8, its been crashing all the time. Up to 20 times an hour. Usually it occurs when I click a link from a Google search, or in Yahoo. Even if I send in a crash report and restart Firefox, it crashes as soon as the same page is brought back up, or the same link is clicked. I have also had it crash when completely idle. Its very frustrating as it is my favorite browser. I've resorted to using Google Chrome for the time being.

External Hard Drive not recognised after horrible crash and reformat.
There's yet another problem with my MBP.
First of all this happened: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=969838&tstart=0
Since I got it fixed I bought a 500GB Freecom external Hard-drive and used it to back up all my stuff. It was a case of plugging it into the USB port and it mounted on the desktop. I've had it for about a month.
I've only just got my MBP back from getting the keyboard replaced, then on Saturday night it crashed. And kept crashing. Then it wouldn't boot. Then it crashed when booting. Then it took me to a command prompt. I reset all the parameters laid out in the troubleshooting guide. I managed to boot in safe mode, but my Freecom drive wouldn't mount anymore. But it kept crashing and crashing. I finally managed to boot from the installation CD and I reformatted the drive and installed OS X (Tiger) afresh. But now my Freecom drive won't show up on the desktop at all!
I ran a Hard Ware test after the reformat, and the code 4MEM/2/40000000 came up, then again, 1FCA8574, then 41530574.
When I had the Freecom plugged in it would show in System profiler but not mounted on the desktop.
What is wrong? I am really annoyed because my Warranty ran out yesterday and I'm only after getting it back from Apple to get the keyboard replaced!
Please help!
(PS - I have Leopard on its way to me, would installing this help?)(PS - I have Leopard on its way to me, would installing this help?)
