X-Fi and sound slow-down/speed

For a while now my X-Fi Fatality with up to date drivers has some weird problem. It may sound two-fold, but I think the issue is related to the same problem.
In my favourite media application, MediaMonkey, I play my mp3/m4a files and sometimes it suddenly starts to play a file at double, or more, speed. If you're old enough to remember Alvin and the Chipmunks, well, it's close to that. If you then double click another file, it will play it at normal speed, click another file again, and back to the double speed. I think this is an important fact of the problem, which I will explain down below.
Now recently a second phenomenon started occuring (I do not think I have noticed it before) while playing World of Wacraft. When I have alt-tabbed to the desktop and started some background music (not sure if this causes it, or merely the alt-tabbing) and go back to WoW, sometimes it starts to play samples within the game at half or slower speed (I also suspect higher speed too). Now, part of the game are still using sounds that are normal and some others are getting played back at slower speed. Again this is important.
What I think is happening, based on my (limited) experience working on audio drivers for BSD, is that one or more channels of the sound card are being set to a wrong playback speed. This makes sense if you keep in mind that for the media player it will start the playback of the next song on another channel. This theory gets more support if you understand how games generally deal with audio playback. You have a number of channels, one or more used for music, and others for various sample playbacks (such as weapon sounds, enemy or your own shouts/pain sounds/grunts). In WoW this shows with certain spell effects or voices from your characters, you either hear 'this spell is not ready' in a very slow, low way or with certain weapons hits it sounds incredibly short, as if it 'pops'.
Only reason I am now posting is because a friend of mine got an X-Fi yesterday, installed it and the latest release drivers and today complained to me that her media player was playing audio at double (or more) speed. So I am much more convinced it is a driver issue that's causing this.
Anyone else experiencing this? I saw some forum posts and sounds that some beta driver in June/July fixed this, but I have been diligently tracking the release drivers (I haven't tried the current beta yet) and for me the problem is not fixed, not for my friend.

Hmm... there are so many euro rack pro models available ... but, in generally, if you plug the mic into behringer (XLR) and then record it through X-Fi line in (as I guided earlier), you should get + 60dB gain for microphone already in behringer .. this should be enough (max output from Behringer is 28dBu if you connect the mixer to X-Fi through Main outputs).
Are your microphones stereo or mono? If stereo then, is the X-Fi Mic input stereo too?
Also, you need to remember; when you record using non-ASIO software (as like cool edit) you set all 'internal' signal levels (source/recording levels) through X-Fi mixer software (creation mode) in any case. For microphone (if you connect directly into card, there maybe is +20dB boost option available (X-Fi Mixer). Working in ASIO driver mode, you should get highest levels. I can't remember if SF6 supports ASIO fully ...
If there is this jumper for two different michrophone types (like there was in some earlier SB cards), you'll find all necessary information on this matter from X-Fi User's Guide.

This is the way I have connected my small mixer (PHONIC MM502, different from the one in the picture) into this PC w/ AP92:

  • My external hard drive goes in to constant access mode and really slows down my computer

I'm using an external hard drive for time machine.  After working for an hour or so the drive goes into a constant access mode and realy slows down my IMac.  I look at activity monitor and everything looks good, no high CPU usage or memory issues.  The only fix is to use the power button to shut down my IMac.  After restart it works fine for a while.
If I turn off time machine the problem seems to not happen.  I tried disk utility on the external hard drive and it says the dirve is fine.  I change out external drives and the problem still occures.  Any thoughts?

I didn't realize my profile stated otherwise.
Please check near the bottom of your original post above to see OS X (10.7.2).  You might want to update that to avoid confusion and save some time in the future.
OK, please take a deep breath.
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme....likely because it is not reliable. You might want to review this Apple Support document to confirm:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2038
So, we are not going to be able to provide you with much assistance on that issue.
Some users seem to be able to make this work....some have some problems....and some (like me) who have tried this have nothing but problems.
Sorry, I can't help on this one, but maybe another user who has had better luck will post to provide his secrets.
The iTunes and iPhoto libraries and files are my only copies now.  I moved everything from my Macbook to the external then deleted the originals.
Not sure if you have thought about this.
If you deleted the "originals", then your only copy of your data is on one hard drive. You have no backups if the drive has a problem.
A minimum backup plan would be to have a copy of important data on two different drives. When....not if...one drive fails, you have the data on the "other" drive.
You have no "other" drive according to the information that you have provided.
Further.....Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point....you cannot know when.....Time Machine will pick up the change on your Mac and delete the iTunes and iPhoto data from your Time Machine backups.
The files might stay there a few months, or even longer. But, I have seen instances where the files were deleted within a week or two.
So my advice would be to only delete data from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

Error code: MobileMe Services has encountered a problem and needs to close
I get this mesage everytime i open Outlook and it slows down opening. This problem started when itunes updated. What do I do to solve this?

Hi turingtest2 (you pass, BTW):  Thanks for the speedy reply.  MobileMe doesn't appear in the list of programs which can be uninstalled.  I tried the link you suggest: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall but when I tried to "Run Now", I get the error message:  " Troubleshooting cannot continue because an error has occurred... etc.... [code 80072F8F]"  So googled this error & found a tool called (80072f8f) Repair Tool   -  I'm leery to download yet more stuff from non-microsoft sites -- any recommendations?

  • Dv5t-1000 CTO Sound sputters and OS slows down after a few hours

    I am running Vista 32bit SP1 on a DV5T-1000 CTO machine, 4gb ram 2.0ghz c2d
I've noticed that after a few hours of use, usually after I leave the machine on alone and coming back to it, the sound completely degrades and the OS response completely slows down to a crawl. It is especially prominent if I go to something like youtube and watch a video. the whole thing sputters and stutters and sounds horrible and the os slows to a crawl.
however, if I pause the video, until it's fully loaded, THEN play it, all is well, and my OS goes back to full speed...
but the longer I leave my PC on the WORSE it gets. if I leave it overnight, and come back in the morning, the result is horrible. I have an audio alert to notify me if I have email. normally it just does a quick 'beeep-booop, taking about a quarter of a second' as it flashes the message in the corner. If i leave the machine on over night, the next morning the message will go 'b-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-p-p-p-p-p-p b-b-b-b-o-o-o-o-o-o-p-p-p-p-' and takes about 5 seconds to complete the notification!
At this point, if I try to restart the computer, or shut it down from the start menu, it does nothing. I go to start select restart, nothing. I go to start, select shutdown, nothing. I have to physically hold down the power button and kill the computer!
I've updated to all the latest drivers for all my components straight of the h-p site. I even tried upgrading my nvidia drivers to the latest from nvidia.com. that didn't work so I reverted back to the h-p ones (from LAST YEAR by the way, can we get an UPDATE!)
so please, tell me WHAT GIVES! In addition to using my computer for daily activities, I also produce music on it. And if I use my pc for more than 2 hours, and I want to work on music, I have to reboot or suffer as my computer completely locks up.
PS. this thing says I cant make a word using the letters h and p... is this a JOKE?!?!?!?!?!?!

sorry about my tone, I don't realize how I sound when I'm typing, though I do think it's ridiculous that a forum about h-p doesn't allow you SAY h-p
anyway, I'm still at a loss for what to do, and it just occured to me that this may not be the place to get official help. are there h-p people here? or should I be contacting support? I have a feeling all they're going to tell me is to update the drivers...

  • WRT54G slows down speed and makes many downloads fail

I can't get utube videos when I'm going through the router.  I can get them if I'm on the modem only.  The same applies to long PDFs, software updates, long virus definition updates, videos in general and graphics heavy websites.  It just slows down eventually to a standstill and the download fails.  As stated when the router is not connected the above items pop up or download reasonably quickly through the modem.  We have moderate speed DSL.
    Help!

So the concern that you explained is that you cannot run videos,PDF's or any software updates while connected through router.. So in that case you need to upgrade the firmware of the Router which can be downloaded from the Cisco website ( homesupport.cisco.com )...
Then reset the Router and power cycle the whole network....
Once done with that you have to reconfigure the Router again according to ISP ( Internet Service Provider ) setup...
Disable the anti-virus and security centers if any...

  • Since upgrade to 10.6.7, fans speed up and never slow down

I have an Intel iMac, 2.8 GHz i7, 8GB RAM
Just as the subject line indicates:
After upgrading to 10.6.7, when my iMac starts to heat up, the CPU fan RPM will increase but it will not slow down until I reboot - even if I allow ample time for the machine to cool down and let it sit idle for hours.
Right now, the CPU temperature is only 100 degrees F, utilization is at 1%, and the very loud CPU fan is still running at 4000 RPM.
I've reset the SMC multiple times, and this doesn't help.
The most telling aspect is that in the seven months prior, the fan would slow as the machine cooled off.  Not so with 10.6.7
    Anyone else experiencing this?
    Thanks

Resetting the SMC was my first thought, but you have done that. You might also try resetting the PRAM/NVRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
After that if the issue persists, I would call AppleCare.

  • ISight problem... works initially; then photo dissolves and sound slows too

I have a MacBook pro with built in camera; my daughter has an imac with iSight camera unit. We can do iChats via AIM, and used to have no trouble, but lately, the iChat runs for about one minute, at which point the picture I am seeing begins to deteriorate into squares, and slows down; I lose normal action and sound as well... although my daughter and granddaughter can still see and hear me. Any suggestions on solving this problem

    Hi
First has your daughter set the Quicktime streaming setting, goto sys prefs/quicktime/streaming/streaming speed, set to 1.5mbps(dont use automatic)
In ichats prefs click on video and change bandwidth limit to 500.
    Restart iChat.

  • Windows 7 Pro on iMac (mid 2011) and network slows down

We have an office with about 8 mid 2011 21" iMacs running Windows 7 Pro courtesy of Bootcamp.  The machines boot quickly and all programs open quickly.  They each have from 2 - 4 mapped network drives to a 2012 Windows Server 2008 R2 HP GL380 server on-site and are wired with Gig Ethernet HP business class switches).  The users' Documents, Desktop, and a couple other directories are re-directed to the file server using an Active Directory Group Policy Object (GPO).
A couple of the computers will regularly start to slow down after only 20 or 30 minutes of use.  The rest have occasionally experienced it but it's always independent of others experiencing the slowdown.  The computers with the more regular slowdowns I've also booted into OS 10.7.x and the transfer rates to the same file server are fast and consistent.  BTW, all computers are current on Windows updates and Apple updates.

  • Photoshop fast in morning and then slows down

Hey everyone.  I hope someone can help me with this because I haven't found anything on Google.  At least, nothing that works.  When I first get to work in the mornings, the big banner files I have open very quickly.  However, after about an hour goes by, Photoshop slows down and everything takes so long to open.  Any ideas on what might be causing this and how I can fix it?  Help would be greatly appreciated!

Yup, definitely sounds like a memory problem, but if you post information about your system, OS, 32/64Bit, Photoshop version etc, someone may be able to give you more detailed help.
I'm assuming that MikeJones11x was talking about an SSD (Solid State Drive) in his answer above, and he's right, adding an SSD to a system with give you a huge performance boost, but you need to be careful.
Never use an OS/Apps SSD as your Scratch Disk; if you want your Scratch Disk on an SSD, install a second one, which is what I've done in my own system. Another thing to be wary of is the Controller in an SSD, depending on whether it's being used for the OS/Apps, or as a Scratch Disk.
This is a fairly complicated subject, and I won't go into any more detail in this reply, but if you'd like to investigate this further please either post a reply here, or e-mail me, I'll be glad to help if I can.
    Good luck

  • Selected Image Units and Filters slows down or closes Montion

Is would appreciate if somebody could guide me regarding this problem. Somtimes when I apply some Image Units or Filters to my project the program slows down or crashes . I have been reading in some of the posted questions here that is PC card ATI RAdeon HD 3870 would help to improve the rendering times
If I change the factory's PC Card Nvidia Geforce 7300 by this Radeon would this will really improve this problem ?.
Is there a recommeded site where I can get /buy third party emitters/replicators?.
Thanks a lot for your time to answer my question

Thanks a lot Andy. I am using just NTSC 780x480 projects only since HD seems to be very large for my hardware. I am really new to MAC but I had to admit that I am a little bit dissapointed with the results of my Mac Pro. I took a course in a Mac school to learn a little bit about the use of FInal Cut Studio and the hardware used for the training seems to have exactly the same peformance that my Mac Pro ( at least in speed) that is promoted as more efficent or profesional equipment without taking into consideration price differences vs. the rest of the available macs computers . But coming back to your question: Filters used are for example "light rays" or "glow" or when I apply some image units as "comic effect" for example takes time to my hardware to apply the effect . If I am lucky and the effect is applied if I try to modify the effect just after couple of changes the program crashes. I have intalled 3 times the program so I am not sure if this problem is related with corrupted program. Other filters sees to work very good and the rest of the particles and emitters are fine when are used in my projects.
