X-fi card comparison

Hi guys soundcards aren't my speciality so i need some opinions. firstly my needs, i mainly will be want to listen to music and watch films, gaming is not as much as a prioty, i noticed all x-fi cards since 2006 have the crystalisation and cmss features. will a more modern titanium xfi card to a better job of making a crappy 28kb mp3 sound better than one of the older generation models such as the creature xtreme music ?
http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Sound.../ref=de_a_smtd
i know its discontinued but i can get it for ?/3rd of the price of the newer titanium one. what will the diference between the two when it comes to music and dvds. is the newer generation worth the price bump for my needs.
also i noticed this one, which looks like the the latest gen version of the xtreme music?
http://www.amazon.co.uk/CREATIVE-30S...84232869&sr=-0
however it seems to be a budget version :s
on balence which would be the best one, other suggestions are welcome too. i dont mind a slightly older gen if it does the job
Thanks

hmm on balance it looks like im going to go for the older extreme music, it looks like a great card still today despite being 5 years old. i can get it for ?35, is this a good deal or are there better more modern alternati'ves?
thanks

This [post|http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=6724880#6724880] mentions the possibility that the ATI 2600 cards are manufactured on two separate lines, and that problem cards may be associated with just one of them.
Thought it might be helpful to start posting specific card info and see if a pattern emerges.
There are 3 main places on the bottom side of the ATI card where potentially relevant information is written. There is also info in System Profiler. Please include what you can but at least Part Number, Serial Number (mask the last few digits), and a brief summary of the problem symptoms you are seeing -- or that your system runs trouble-free. Feel free to copy/paste my text as a template.
Please continue placing general comments in the threads listed above, and help keep this one focused on the card info. Thanks.

  • Graphics Card Comparison

Looking to replace a system for presentation use from a 2007 iMac to a current MacMini.
    • 2007 iMac has a ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB of GDDR3 memory for a graphics card.
    • Current MacMini uses nvidia geforce 9400m graphics card
Would this be a step backwards in performance?

The 4330 and the 9400M are almost the same in terms of performance. You get a better score in the benchmarks for the 4330 but it only amounts to about anywhere from 5 to 10 Frames per second in terms of gameing power, plus the 4330 only has a 64bit bus which hampers the whole card. For presentations and other non gameing applications, the 9400M is a lot better, and with a better build quality from Apple with better support, you get what you pay for
PS, As for bluray... it may be better then DVD, but no one knows if it will last as long as DVD has..

  • MBP or iMac gfx card?

Which is better? the 8600mgt in the MBP or the HD 2600 pro in the iMacs?
    especially for...
    gaming?
    3D graphics work?
    video encoding?

As a general rule, the graphics cards in desktop computers will outperform the cards in laptops of the same relative age/trim level, so I would expect the HD 2600 pro to be better - but +only very slightly better+. Note that the Nvidia 8600M edges out the ATI Mobility Raedon HD 2600, which is the mobile version of the Raedon card - this may be the comparison the previous poster refers to; the HD 2600 PRO is the desktop version, which outperforms the companion mobile card from ATI. I couldn't find a head-to-head of the Nvidia mobile (the M in 8600M) vs. the Raedon desktop (missing "Mobility" in the full name), possibly because mobile-to-desktop graphics card comparisons are not the norm.
The upshot is that the graphics card should not be the driver of your choice between iMac and MBP - base that on need for portability, display size, and cost.

  • Creative Gaming Audio & the EAX2 R

Partially as a response to this thread about "Onboard sound versus X-Fi review/shootout?"...?http://forums.creative.com/creativel...message.id=430?... this post further expands the subject of on-board sound on to gaming & continues deeper into the needs/wants of a "gameaudiophile".
[color="#ff6600">- GG's!?Even though the link below points to an old article / review from 2005 03 07, it might give people here some guidance in finding their temporary way back to the still not so old HDA on-board sound until Creative's driver technologies see a brighter day. Intel High Definition Audio Aricle on the C-Media CMI-9880 & Realtek AL C880
http://www.behardware.com/articles/5...ition-dio.html?-------------------------------------------------------------- - Now I'm a pretty frequent gamer who have come to rely heavily on Creatives post EAX2 systems in regards to great positonal audio, doppler effects etc. As we all know, EAX on the higher notes is TBA & ETA unknown for the time being. This gives us time to fool around with eventual on-board stuff. So I did & let me tell you that the Sensaura 3DPA, which is implemented on the CMI-9880 (on my ASUS P5AD2 Premium MOBO) does not come close to a love affair. Setups for up to 7.CH is at your disposal, virtual modes as well. 6 Ds3D voices , EAX-2 & Jack Sensing... It's all working as in runnig but just doesn't reach any particular high.
[color="#ff6600">Gaming Audio & the EAX2 Roof? Some of you might wonder what my nit-picking about EAX is about. You might not be a gamer. The regular mp3-cowboy regards EAX to be merely a bug. You simply have to hear it in a game, preferably an online-shooter where picking up enemy footsteps & sounds etc are the difference between knowing where to turn your sights or getting it in the back. It's about anticipation as well as immersion. The EAX3+ modes make a huge difference in those regards. For many gamers, the importance of audio quality & positioning might not be clear when first starting out with a game. But as they grow into it, get accustomed with their surroundings, they start to notice & realize how important audio really is. Many of my friends who I have lured into gaming over the years have often been astonished by the difference between on-board audio solutions & the Creative addon cards. Then amazed about what miracles a good headphone setup can do. The real jaw-droppers were the higer EAX modes. EAX became their "eyes on their back". To put it bluntly: Gamers are a new but different breed of audiophiles. We are not content with movie-style directional audio alone, we also demand depth, distance, elevational sound possibilities. True 3D audio. EAX has been the best answer so far as to keep us somewhat happy. No EAX, no satisfaction. Part of the problem is that we have always been trusting Creative to keep deli'vering, and they probably will. But what if, just if, we would like to step out & try something different for a change. Just to know that some other company might do it just as good for us? Well, the options aren't many & they're limited.

    ps.
Anyone running the AuzenTech X-Meridian 7. card for instance? I understand the X-Mer being very high quality as far as everything besides gaming is concerned. Reading a lot of reviews, primary concern would be the "higher than X-Fi" FPS hit - what is your real-world experience outside of the constructed RightMark 3D tests? Audio positioning / doppler? How does the Dolby Headphone, Dolby? Pro Logic IIX, Dolby? Digital Li've, DTS? Interacti've & DTS? Connect technologies hold up against their Creative counterpart EAX3-5, CMSS/CMSS2 etc? IMHO, EAX2 alone is not good enough & does not cut it when it comes to fast FPS-games. Maybe some of you have had first-hand experience with the Razer Barracuda AC- card instead? The reviews tell me a story about "nice first try" for Razer, considering it's their first shot at serious gaming audio. Positional is mentioned to be somewhat over optimistic etc. As I understand it, their "EAX3-and-up-killers" are called Razer Fidelity?, Razer Enhanced Sonic Perception? (ESP) architecture and Razer?s 3D (720?) Positional Gaming Audio Engine?. Any hardcore gamers tried it's?Of course, both the X-Mer & AC- utilize EAX2, but as I mentioned.., that's an obstacle to get around for the companies serious about getting gamers to migrate from Creative. It's simply not enough for some of us The substitute technologies must at least come very close of making up for the lack of EAX3-5. Many reviewers barely touch the gaming audio aspects of the tested card, simply stating that "it's adequate enough" (?!!). Well.., that might not hold true for those of us who expect to invest several more hours on virtual battlegrounds than playing mp3's or mixing etc.Happy hunting!

Danke Cat.., but it's pretty much just a pure love letter to honey EAX, who happens to be sorely missed by my big rig if you manage to take notice? - Not dangerous at all really since Creative will hopefully outperform the competition anyhow in the end, right? I'm counting on it anyway. In general, these OS-shift problems currently stirring up are most likely a passing thing; taking audio & audio technology more into the spotlight than anything else. - Which is a good thing for Creative as well (handled nicely), promise, & so is acknowledging / discussing differences between soundcards.
If you are referring to the reviews as inhibiting some sort of advertisement character then yes, advertisement leaning towards Creative since none of the other products have been able to outperform any of the Creative cards when it comes to the topic of gaming ^^ as of yet. Many also use Creative cards as reference in tests, link to & publish Creative specifications etc. Does not necessarily have to be a one way street. Or do you perhaps mean that it's not ok to namedrop? Or hyperlink? Ahwell.., I should have read the manual I guess.
As marshall_lai also kindly pointed out, there is also a huge business opportunity helping lesser incorporated to implement EAX+ & technologies in a proper manner!
Anyway.., Parental Advisory & brainpower recommended in any reply & Enjoy!

  • End date of given month

    Hi Guys,
i am facing this issue from last 1 month can anyone please give me a solution
i am wrintin the lastdate file with month like  OCT 2010 by doing this  am not getting any results in score card comparison chart, i f i change that to month end date like 31 OCT 2010 i am getting the results, can some body give solution to write the end date of a  given month to the lastdate file
here is the code i am using
    begin
         ask
         global  origin middle background Green
         Title 'Set Data Load Date'
         Skip 1
         TITLE 'date  Selection'
              NAME procMonth
PROMPT 'Enter  month to process: '
    End
... copy latest to the lastdate document
    output     lastdate      over
    exh     control     procMonth
    output      off
    thanks in advance

You need to apply two FM to get the end day of the month.
First you need to apply FM MONTHS_PLUS_DETERMINE. This will give you the date after 3 months.
                CALL FUNCTION 'MONTH_PLUS_DETERMINE'
                  EXPORTING
                    MONTHS        = 3   " << for 3 months
                    OLDDATE       = l_start_Date   " << 12/01/2007
                 IMPORTING
                   NEWDATE       = l_3_Date. " << 02/01/2008
Then call the FM RP_LAST_DAY_OF_MONTHS . this will give you the end date of the month
      CALL FUNCTION 'RP_LAST_DAY_OF_MONTHS'
        EXPORTING
          day_in            = l_3_Date  " << 02/01/2008
        IMPORTING
          last_day_of_month = l_3_Date  " < 02/29/2008
        EXCEPTIONS
          day_in_no_date    = 1
          OTHERS            = 2.
Call both FMs again to get your another date(after 4 months).

When my Mac Pro arrives I am going to install dual Nvidia 8800's. What slot do I use for the second card? I will also be installing Vista through Bootcamp.
I know the cards are SLI capable. Does the Mac or Windows support SLI? If so. how do you enable it? Any additional advice concerning anything is also welcome. I have always been a PC user since the release of Win95 and I am taking the leap.

Vista is easy to install, doesn't need any help really, doesn't run in, under, or through BootCamp. Just format a drive as Master Boot Record, setup one or more FAT partitions (you will need to delete and create NTFS when it gets to the install screen in Vista). Then once running, you install some Apple hardware services and support to allow switching, synching time, and such. And install the latest Nvidia Vista drivers.

  • Procedural algorithm vs object base algorithm

i'm a student in a hong kong institution. And i'm using java to write a mutiple player card game as my final year project.
My supervisor suggest me to think about using a object base or a database to store the game rules: i.e. the algorithm to store the rules.
However it is really odd to me, becauese when doing some card comparison, let say the player check if his card set is bigger than the other player,i will simply think about a method which receive the other player cardset and do the camparison in the method and then return a true or false value.
With my supervisor suggestion, now i try to think about storing the comparsion in a database or a object call GameRules which embed the algorithm.
For the object base approach i have some idea about it advantage e.g. the GameRules object could be implement or extends for other kinds of game.
But the database approach i really can not imagine.......
I would like to discuss the topic with you, so that i can learn from you all.

To put it technically the Game Rules detail game state legality and game state changes as a result of a "move" in the game.
The Rules are generally detailed individually with references to other Rules.
It should be possible to abstract out a Rule, a State interface, StateChangeEvent and StateChangeListener interface/abstract classes.
A game turn consists of an attempt to change the current State of the game. This change can trigger StateChangeEvents, StateChangeListeners can be used to apply appropriate Rules to those changes. A Rule can result in the change being declared illegal, a further change in the game State being made (leading to further events etc) or both.
A generic way to apply rules is also needed as otherwise (basically which Rules a StateChangeListener should do apply for a given StateChangeEvent. This is more trivial than it sounds fortunately.
An interesting twist to the use of a Database to store the rules is in how you do it.
Python (scripting language) can also run in a Java environment as a Jython Script. Now these Jython scripts are simply text, therefore Strings. Now you can store the rules in a database, query for the script you want to run and run the script on the fly. The integration of Java objects into Jython is trivial as well.

  • RAID card or Disk Utility RAID - Need simple comparison please.

Folks, I am trying to make sense of the necessity or lack thereof for Apple's RAID card. Can someone provide a simple breakdown or comparison of the RAID card and/or loading the Mac Pro with drives and striping them using Disk Utility. I was under the impression that I could buy a Mac Pro, fill up the drive slots and just have Disk Utility set up the RAID. I'll be working with HD.
    Enlighten me please

Can someone provide a simple breakdown or comparison of the RAID card and/or loading the Mac Pro with drives and striping them using Disk Utility.
Users that are working with uncompressed HD 1920x1080 10bit RGB video usually aim for storage speeds of 240MB/sec or more. Obtaining this level of performance across the RAID is the trick.
The Apple RAID 5 card can provide 306MB/sec. when configured as a striped RAID set, using four Seagate 250GB model 7200.10 internal hard drives with 16MB cache, when the volume is empty. By the time the striped RAID set reaches 80% full performance drops to 214MB/sec. A setup that can provide 240MB/sec. when the volume is 100% full will provide a more reliable configuration for 1080 uncompressed HD video processing.
Disk Utility can provide this same level of performance without the RAID 5 card.
So what is the advantage of the Apple RAID 5 card?
The redundancy of RAID 5 can add a layer of protection against the failure of a single hard drive. RAID 5 can be rebuilt whereas RAID 0 provides zero data protection. The problem with RAID 5 in a four drive setup is that one disk is required for storing parity data. This leaves the RAID 5 slower as only 3 disks can be used for performance. In a RAID 5 four drive setup the top speed available will usually be approximately 210MB/sec. and when full closer to 180MB/sec. As you can see RAID 5 adds some data protection but the price is lower performance. That is the feature that the Apple RAID 5 card offers combined with a bootable internal solution.
    Do I need 240MB/sec. performance?
Users that are not working with uncompressed HD 1920x1080 10bit video may find slower RAID performance will work for them. HDV requires approx. 25MB/sec and DVCPRO HD needs 100MB/sec.
On the other hand, when I am working with large video files the faster the RAID, the easier it is to work with large files. So while I may not have dropped frames with slower DV formats I still
prefer to work with as fast of a RAID configuration as I can justify.
    Other Options?
The Mac Pro has many superior performance options available for creating fast RAID volumes. My current favorite setup is the eight channel Areca ARC-1221x RAID 6 controller paired with an external Enhance E8-ML enclosure. You can see an AMUG review of it here:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/areca/1221x/
This setup provides a RAID 6 array with twice the redundancy of RAID 5. It also supports up to eight hard drives which significantly enhances performance. Using eight Seagate 320GB model 7200.10 hard drives in a RAID 6 configuration with the ARC-1221x provides over 430MB/sec. when empty and over 220MB/sec when 100% full. Up to two drives can fail and the RAID can still be rebuilt. The ARC-1221x is available to AMUG members for $680 until the end of the month here:
    http://www.tekramonline.com/amugpromos.html
The Enhance E8-ML 8 bay enclosure is $595. Details are here:
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/enhance/e8/
You will also need two external Mini-SAS to Infiniband cable model Ext-MS-1MSB. I got mine here:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000FUOMO0/arizomacinusergr
So for $1340 you get an 8 bay RAID 6 setup that provides awesome performance, supports RAID levels 0, 1, 3, 5, 6, 10 or JBOD and can even be setup to boot the Mac Pro with any of these RAID configurations. I think this is a great setup.
    More Options
If the user already has SATA PM enclosures and wants to add external RAID 5 capability for minimal cost, HighPoint has introduced the new RocketRAID 2314.
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/highpoint/2314/
The HighPoint RocketRAID 2314 only costs $200 but it adds nice RAID 5 performance with SATA PM enclosures when using the new Mac version 2.11 driver. Using two SATA PM enclosures with 5 hard drives mounted in each enclosure for a total of 10 drives can provide RAID 5 performance of over 370MB/sec when empty and over 318MB/sec when 100% full. It doesn't offer RAID 6 or boot capability but this is very nice RAID 5 setup.
The card costs $180 on sale here:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000NAXGIU/arizomacinusergr
Two quiet Sonnet 500P five bay enclosures will run $1000
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/sonnet/500p/
So for $1180 users have a high performance RAID 5 setup that supports up to ten SATA hard drives. The RAID 5 performance is twice as powerful as an internal four bay solution. Plus, this setup allows users to still utilize the Mac Pro internal bays for importing more data or for backup.
The Apple RAID 5 solution is a nice one. It just seems a little pricey compared to other faster solutions that are available. However, if Apple ever came out with a new RAID 6 card that used the internal 4 ports plus offered two external mini-SAS ports for a total of 12 drives, that would be a product totally worthy of a $1000 premium.
    Happy hunting!

  • MSI NEW P.E. Series Video Card - GTX670 Power Edition 2GD5/OC with Twin Frozr 4

Glad to be back in the forum and I was been busy for awhile. By this time lots of PC hardware already came out especially from Nvidia. Just like today my share would be MSI's N670GTX PE 2GD5/OC video card.
First of all lets talk about the GTX670 GPU chip. This GPU is the younger sibling of GTX680 which uses the same 28nm GK104 chip but with one disabled shader cluster/core.The reference or standard GPU clock is 915Mhz with a turbo boost of 980 and as for the memory is concerned, it has a 256bit memory bus connected to a 2GB GDDR5 memory with speed of 6008Mhz. Just like with any Kepler based architecture, the card would also have all the goodies like "Adaptive V-Sync", "AA TXAA (Temporal Super Sampling)", supports "DX11.1" and improved 3D Vision Surround.
Moving on, let's check out now what MSI did with their GTX670 SKU based video card. The card is under a new Series named "Power Edition" (series comparison table below) and it comes factory overclocked from GPU clock of 915MHz to 1020MHz and Turbo boost of 980Mhz to 1080Mhz. It also comes with the 4th version of Twin Frozr Thermal Cooling design with a theme color of Black and Blue which matches the color of MSI's midrange to high-end motherboards as well. The dual 8cm PWM fan based cooler are equipped with Propeller Fan Blades which draws air better and now has the so called "Dust Removal Technology", basically as you startup your PC the fan will rotate counter clockwise for 30 seconds clearing the dust from the cooling heatsink. Adding a finishing touch, MSI equipped the video card with their Military Class III components ensuring the best performance, efficiency, higher overclocks and durability.

  • Ray Traced 3d and MY video card overheats

    Hello,
First off, I am not trying to get support to fix this, although some insight what might be going on would be great if someone has an idea.  I am using a GTX 480 with After Effects.  Yes, I realize this is not a supported GPU but it does work, in my case, not the best.
THE ISSUE:  I created a motion graphic that was basically 3 words and some shadows and reflections. I used the ray trace 3d render option, and when I was close to being done, I tried to render it.  Unfortunately the video card temps skyrocketed from 70-80 to over 100 degrees celsius before rendering 2 seconds of the clip.
Is this something anyone else using a similar video card has experienced?  I just want to see if anyone else has this issue using a GTX 480. Again I understand its not supported by Adobe, but this is what forums are for, to find others that may have had same issue.
I can still render, but it involves me pushing the card to the limit, pausing, and then restarting after the card has cooled down.  I do have the most recent drivers from Nvidia, v 306.23.  The ambient temps in my house are around 70 degrees Farenhiet, and my card idles at around 45-50degrees celcius.  I have 24 gigs of ram and a i7 920. just for comparison sake, not sure if this is needed.
It might be an air flow problem too.  I plan on getting a new pc when the new i7's come out next year, but this is putting a hamper on my work now. I am only a hobbyist/part time freelance at the moment.
    Thanks for any input.

I believe standard maintenance for air cooled electronic equipment that has no air filtration system built in should be a monthly light cleaning and a semi annual thorough cleaning. One of the facilities that I occasionally work for on a freelance basis only cleans their machines when they fail. Something has failed on almost a third of my visits.
The last PC I built I put a filter in the air inlets. There's all kinds of materials you can get that do a good job of catching most of the lint without fouling up the air flow.
I have my laptops cleaned at least semi annually but I vacuum out the air vents twice a month with a low power device that doesn't spin up the internal fans. You've got to be careful that you don't damage the equipment by over revving rotating parts with too much air pressure.
If I were to set up an office workspace I'd put an electrostatic air cleaner in the office to minimize dust. One equipment failure on a project with a deadline would pay for a really high end filtration system. I run electrostatic air filtration in my home instead of the paper air filters on the HVAC system. It's amazing how little dust and lint we get in the house.

  • 7970 6gb Vapor video card in Mac Pro 1, 1

Hello, i recently ordered this card fo rmy Mac Pro (since it works on bootcamp side at least, and support for the Mac side may come soon due to new Mac edition of 7950 being released). My question is, how do i connect the power cables? It comes with 8-pin cables (8-pin to molex 4-pinx2 cables). My Mac has 6-pin connections. So what do i have to do to connect it?do I simnply connect the 6-pin cables into the 8-pin ports on the card? Do I use 6-pin to 8-pin cables? Do i use Molex 4-pin to Sata cables? I also cant figure out how many molex ports my Mac has. I have read of at elast one (for the second optical bay), but i need more than one. Does my Superdrive use a Molex? will i have to unplug my superdrive ? Please help. In the event taht i need to buy a PSU, can you recommend one that is under 70 bucks that would have the connections I need? Thanks
here is the card I ordered. http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&gid=3&sgid=1157&pid=1497 &psn=&lid=1&leg=0

The Mac Pro 1,1 can run 10.8
    That is incorrect.
EFI emulation is an unstable and temporary option.
Also, the bandwidth limit is theoritical as current cards cannot max out the bandwidth on 1.0 or 1.1 pci-e.
    Also incorrect.
It has been proven with a 1,1 that a 5870 provides minimal increases  in performance over the 5770. Compared to 2008+ Mac Pros that see a significant (FAR more than your assumed 2%) increase in the same comparison because of their PCIe 2.0 bus. As you can see here: http://barefeats.com/wst10g3.html
And here you can see there is very little difference between the 2008-2009-2010 models in performance with the 5870: http://barefeats.com/wst10g2.html
Why? They have PCIe 2.0 and the 1,1-2,1 have PCIe 1.0 which limits performance. That means the 5770 is the fastest card avaialbe the 1,1 can take full advantage of.
