X-Fi CMSS-3D settings for stereo speakers

I have just gone from a 5.1 to a 2.0 speaker setup and hence I'm interested in a proper CMSS-3D setup (for 5.1 I had turned it off) for gaming (music I will still like to output without any processing)
In any case, as I understand, I should set speakers in X-Fi Control panel to 2.0/2.1.
Then, the question is - should Windows (7, in my case) be set to 2.0 or 5.1/7.1?
Also, how should I set the games? To "stereo" or to some kind of surround setup (5.1/ 7.1)?

Yes, Creative Control Panel to stereo and Windows to 5.1/7.1. The option on Creative Control Panel enables the effect and the proper speaker layout, and the setting in Windows tell all software that the system supports interpreting surround information.
Some versions of the drivers do not allow different layouts, but the newest one works fine if I am not mistaken.
Strangely enough, when I set the sound to 7.1 in Windows, when doing the basic test in the Control Panel, I get the sound only from L and R channels. Is that correct? I guess in that case I should be able to hear them all...

  • SBX Pro Studio Settings for 2.1 Speakers (Z/ZX/ZXR) question

What would be the best settings for a 2.1 speaker system? Previously i had this setup:
    Windows Sound Panel: Stereo
Sound Blaster Settings: Stereo + SBX ON
Now i have it setup to this:
Windows Sound Panel: 5.1 (rear, sides, sub disabled)
Sound Blaster Settings: 5.1 (rear, sides, sub disabled) + SBX ON
Only thing ive noticed with this new setup is i can enable 5.1 on games and movies but still just use 2 speakers.

the latter setup allows 2.1 virtual surround (SBX Pro Surround) utilizing all 6 sources from games / movies.
when you disable SBX Pro Surround - rear & center sources play on fronts as is - without the virtual surround filters applied to it (basically the card downmixing instead of the game).
ATM my rear speakers are disconnected so I disable them and get to keep my center working as part of an uncommon, fully supported 3.1 setup

  • Optimal headphone settings for Xfi XtremeMu

I've just bought myself some nice new Sennheiser HD595 headphones and I'd like to do most of my music listening through my computer (CDs and DVD-As played through the dri've in the computer), but I'd like some advice on how to set my Xfi XtremeMusic card to the right settings.
I've fiddled around and found that the Crystaliser does make the sound sharper, but I'm worried that it might be obscuring other sounds or distorting the noise somehow to achieve this effect (I'm fairly fanatical about getting the best possible sound out of my music - "the way the musician intended it to be heard" or something like that).
I've also swapped between the 2. speaker setting and the headphone setting and can't really decide which one sounds better - although at higher volume the 2. speaker setting has a constant fuzz in the background. However, some of the other posts on this board suggest that 5. is the best setting for headphones.
I also tried the CMSS-3D headphone setting and it definitely sounds worse, like the sound is wrongly positioned around my head.
Basically, I'm just a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of permutations and combinations in the sound settings, and would like some advise on how to tweak it to the best music-listening effect.

In the config. consoles I think it's better to leave it as headphones or 2. speakers. Since you have to plug the headphones to the line-out jack if you configure as 5. you'll lose the center, sub and rears when listening to surround content. When you use a 5./7. setup, CMSS "fills" the missing channels with the stereo source. With headphones it makes stereo music more?"upfront" so it doesn't sound "inside the head", but according to some reviews, the HD595s have already?an upfront soundstage. CMSS 3D is nice when you listen to 5. DD/DTS content with headphones, the spatialization is pretty good and I prefer it over the basic stereo?downmix (or even dolby headphone), but you might want to turn it off for stereo content (mostly music) as it changes sligthly the sound (you already noticed that).
CMSS 3D is almost a must for games, it enables MacroFX and elevation filter (in UT2003 let a manta run over you, you'll immediately notice the difference), just enable also bass boost for games, it tends to favor mids and highs.

  • HTML5 MP4 Codec Settings for Safari 5.1.5

    Hello all,
I am having a problem with HTML4 MP4 h.264 videos in Safari 5.1.5 only running under Lion. Does anyone have any exactly specifications for compressing videos that will play in this version of Safari? Also, if you have sucessfully exported videos for 5.1.5 what software are you using to encode? I have tried several options (After Effects, QT7 etc) and not had any luck. Thank you!

Getting mp3 music out of your 4 satelite speakers and center channel requires either enabling the X-Fi CMSS 3D Sorround setting in your Audio Console or, alternately, if using your X-Fi card with an external Decoder, you could (if available on your decoder) enable Dolby PLII Music enhancement or X2 Stereo enhancement. I personally prefer the results from enabling CMSS 3D Surround and then adjusting my center channel for an even sound stage. Crystalizer Mode: In general, 24-bit Crystalizer produces crisper high frequencies, punchier mid-range percussion and note onsets, and stronger kick bass hits. I'm not sure that I would use the Crystalizer Mode as a substitute for good EQ settings but perhaps in conjuction would be the best approach. Depending on the 5. speaker system you have, Base Redirect shouldn't have to be used unless your satelite speakers and center channel are playing Bass frequencies that really should be assigned to the Sub-woofer. Some speaker sets and amplifiers have bass redirection feature i.e. you do not need discrete 5. signal to hear the sound on the subwoofer. Such sets always output bass - even if you connect a normal stereo source. Again, however, it is possible that if you have an analogue speaker set that does not support automatic Bass Redirection via the amplifier, then you would have to enable Bass Redirect at the sound card level in order to redirect the lowest frequencies to the subwoofer. I do not have to conduct a Bass Redirection, however, not all systems are equal in terms of functionality. The best settings for a 5. system are really contigent on the room size, speaker type and placement, room wall materials, amplifier type, content played (movies, music, spoken word., etc.) and, listeners personal preference. Personaly I would run the supplied Speaker Calibration utility and when you have the sound you personally enjoy, stick with it. Best advise I can offer to be perfectly honest. Hope this helped.

  • CMSS can cause for weird results. Please read this if you have surround issues

I'm a musician who frequently uses the Audio creation mode because this is the environment most optimal for creating music. For some time now, I've facing a certain problem where today, I finally found the solution about.
    my problem
The problem I was having, is that some applications (they're optimised for stereo) played sound on my center speaker differently than those who use the windows 7 drivers. What happened in a nutshell, is that when I play sound in flash, the center speaker volume is about 3 times as loud as all the other speakers. Although this gives a nice and clear sound for presentations, this can be a pain when you want to listen to music.
    my setup
For me, this is a bit awkward, because I have a big room where my speakers are positioned for my TV. My computer is next to my tv, but my center speaker is not in front of my pc monitor, but rather in front of my tv. Due to this, the right ear gets way more sound than my left one. Strangely enough, it weren't all the applications that had trouble with this. My music player plays everything equally throughout my speakers.
    the mixer
The creative mixer (startup console) has several ways of tweaking this. Like assigning what channels to play if sound gets played through L/R, and their individual volume bars. You can guess it maybe. Changing these settings affected both applications differently. I could use the sliders to fix one, and then mess up the other. So when I went through all my settings I couldn't find what causes this.
    CMSS is the fault here
I went reading this forum, and came to this post: http://forums.creative.com/t5/Sound-Blaster/How-to-enable-sound-for-my-center-rear-and-side-speakers-using/td-p/52 What gives, this option is not available when you are in Audiocreation mode. So it shouldn't affect my sound right? WRONG!
    the problem
Even though you can't tweak the settings during audio creation mode, the settings are still in affect. So you have to switch to entertainment mode to access the CMSS-3D. I went there, and I had stereo enhancing surround enabled. When I changed that, it solved my problem. Since during audio creation, I mainly use stereo applications, I do not need surround enhancement.
    my setup now
I turned it off, and as suspected, windows only parses sound to the left and right, not the other channels, even in audio creation mode. In the mixer, I have enabled output to all 7 channels I have for L/R output, and now the sound gets balanced to all my speakers. True, I get stereo sound over all the speakers, but when I want to use surround, I switch to the entertainment mode anyway.
Could a mod sticky this? I think its worth to have this stickied.

So my touchpad wasn't working and I have an HP dv6-6135dx. It started being messed up shortly after I took my PC apart to upgrade the screen. Sometimes it worked perfectly, sometimes it was completely unresponsive, sometimes the ring around the touchpad was lit, other times it wasn't etc.... It got worse and worse to the point where the touch pad almost never worked.
I followed this guide, and it didn't fix the problem; however, this got me thinking, and I pulled the keyboard out and reseated the touchpad cable where it connects right under there. BAM works perfectly. THANK YOU so much for this post, for some reason I didn't think to reseat the cable... I must have not plugged it back in completely when I took my laptop apart. You can find the service manual for the dv6t here Its in the first post

  • Airport Express for stereo / Belkin Wireless G Plus Router/

Quicksilver G4 using Ethernet connection directly to Belkin Wireless G Plus
Router . Airport Express working remotely via router to stream audio to
loudspeakers. Was able to choose (from iTunes window) whether to play thru
computer speaker (1) or remote speakers (2)
Problem: I temporarily disconnected the Airport Extreme unit. No options now... can only play thru computer. iTunes no longer
shows a dropdown selection option to stream to remote speakers.
Have reset Airport Express. Have used Airport Setup to re-install....have
done this using both a laptop G-4 (successfully to be able to a/b select
either computer speaker or streaming to remote) but when trying to do
the same re-install from the G-4 Quicksilver.... and getting a message that
the installation was successful.... iTunes streaming network signal doesn't show up in the Quicksilver menu bar AND neither is there an option to select
    streaming to remote speakers.
Other manipulation tried: disconnected cable modem, reconnected to
"reset" the modem. Other observation: the Airport Express indicator
    is steadily green.
I hope this makes enough sense that someone like Tessarex can suggest
a solution to enable iTunes streaming with the G-4 Quicksilver, via the
wireless Belkin router to the Airport Express and stereo. (I don't want to
have to resort to using my wife's laptop to initiate

With your QuickSilver G4 connected via Ethernet to the Belkin router, you should be able to stream iTunes to the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) by joining the Belkin's wireless network as a wireless client.
    Try the following...
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), temporarily connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, use the AirPort Admin Utility to check these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
    - Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
    Music tab
    - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
    - Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (checked)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    - iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
    - Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Best settings for xtremegam

Is there any webpage that gives the best settings for each of the modes for specific purposes?
For example, I use the HD555s and I mostly play cs .6. What would be the best settings for .6? Especially for the best positional sound?

There's not that much to it, really. Just put it into 'Game' mode, turn the Crystalizer on if you like it (use 50% or you risk distortion), and enjoy. Having 'Game' mode enabled will let the card use EAX 5 whenever it's available, as well as fully accelerate the sound; the other modes stick on something like EAX 3.
There is CMSS, which manipulates the sounds to try and emulate how your ear affects the characteristics of sound coming from different directions (if you run a fast tap and listen to it with your head looking in different directions you should notice the pitch changes slightly -- CMSS tries to do this).
Only problem is that the CMSS technology isn't perfect, as everyone's ear is slightly different and your brain is used to how <i>your</i> ear changes the sound depending on direction. CMSS can only guess, so while it's close your brain may very well spot the imperfections and ruin the effect. Also, CMSS lowers sound quality which may be painful on your relati'vely high-end HD555 headphones. I choose to disable it.
One tip though, if you <i>don't</i> use CMSS then use two speaker mode rather than headphones. The headphone mode messes with the sound slightly (including the volume) but is more designed to make your bog standard cheap headphones sound good, rather than high-end ones that deli'ver speaker quality like yours.
Other than that, not much more to know. If you're feeling brave you could go to the Equalizer (EQ) and try dragging some of those sliders around. The left slider is the deepest sounds, and the right slider is the highest; the ones in-between obviously go from deep to high. I use this:
    [img"]http://serve.ryanjohnwilliams.com/images/x_fi_equalizer.jpg">
It's best to work incrementally from the inside out, so start in the middle and then drag each slider up a little. Working up the right hand side will make the sound crisper, while the left hand side will bring out the explosions and gunshots. You could just use my settings and then perhaps tone some of them up/down to taste (since I use different headphones/speakers). EQ is essentially just a more complex bass/treble (or rather, bass/treble is a simplified EQ), but the added control can really let you get the card working perfectly with your headphones/speakers.

  • Best settings for surround sou

Hey everyone! What do you think are the best settings for a surround sound gaming setup with the X-Fi ExtremeMusic card? At the moment I have CMSS-3D on, with Stereo Surround and the Stereo Envelopment turned to Surround at the max. Is there any better way of having the settings for surround sound for gaming? Also, the 24bit Crystalizer is at 50%, is that ok? Thanks in advance for the replies!

I like using Stereo Surround to 50% and rock equalizer, with Crystalizer to the max

Are you using a stereo receiver or surround sound system for the audio by chance.  What you are describing sounds like a receiver that is not setup correctly, or does not have the speakers connected to it correctly to support Dolby surround, 5.1 or 7.1.  Which is why it is only happening on some content.  It would only be on the ones that are encoded to support Dolby audio.

Sometimes this works. Otherwise you will have to wait for an updte to the car system or the iOS on the iPod
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset the car system
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

  • Adjust volume via iTunes for multiple speakers

I upgraded my iTunes to 6.02 and finally it is possible to select multiple AE and my PC at the same time to stream music to them.
It works almost perfect for me! Just one thing bugs me:
I can't adjust the volume on my AE via Airtunes if I selected my computer and my AE. When I try to adjust my volume in iTunes, the volume on my computer changes but the volume on my AE doesn't.
If I select just one of them, either works perfectly but not togeter.
My settings are right (preferences > advanced > disable iTunes volume control for remote speakers = OFF).
The funny thing is that on a Mac it works perfectly but on my Win XP Pro not!
Is this a common problem for Win XP and is there a solution for this?
    Windows XP Pro

I have the same issue, but don't blame Apple. Just getting multiple AE's to work is so cool I'm still in heaven.
I don't see how Apple could engineer the ability to stream different volume levels to different AE's.

  • Can Apple TV connect to my stereo speakers via AUX cable?

I want to turn my old stereo system into "AirPlay" speakers using the AUX port on my stereo. I want to do this so that I can play music through the speakers without being limited in distance by the length of my AUX cable from my iPhone/MacBook to the stereo.
The stereo has an AUX port, and I see that the Apple TV has an "optical audio" port, but I don't really understand what that means.
    My Questions:
    1. Is there an adapter to convert the Optical Audio port to AUX into my stereo?
    2. Will the apple TV act like an AirPlay device for my speakers (with no HDTV)?
    3. Should I be looking at Airport Express Base Stations instead, since they have an "Analog/Optical Audio Jack" on the back and don't require an HDTV?
Hopefully I've made my question(s) as clear as possible...
    Thanks!

I would recommend the Airport Express based on your needs

  • When playing iTunes from 2006 MacBook via Airport Express remote stereo speakers, the music keeps dropping in and out

I've tried hours and a trip to the Apple Store to resolve this problem, and no luck so far.
We have two Airport Expresses -- one is an older "g" version (from 2006), one is a newer "n" version (a couple of years old).
We have one older MacBook (from June 2006) (so it can only use "g" wireless and also cannot be upgraded to OS X 10.7 "Lion").
We have one MacBook Air and an iMac (both less than a year old), an iPad (about 2 months old), and a recently acquired AppleTV (in the past few weeks).
We also have two iPhones that do use our local wireless network on occassion.
We have stereo speakers that are currently connected into one of the Airport Expresses.
For years (until the past few weeks) I played music from iTunes on my first generation MacBook to the speakers with no problems (using the older "g" Airport Express).  Recently, however, when playing music remotely over the speakers we have gotten fairly regular (though at random intervals) drops of the music in and out (drops are for a second or two each).  So far, here's what we've tried to do:
    (1)     Went to the Apple Store, where they thought the problem might be compatability between the g and n equipment in our house.  They suggested that we get an Airport Extreme and use that as the base so that 2.5 GHz and 5 GHz networks could each be set up, allowing the two systems to play nicely.  Spent a couple of hours setting everything up.  No dice.
    (2)     The skipping happens even when (a) I turn off the Apple TV; and/or (b) turn off the older Airport Express and just use the Extreme and the "n" Express (with the "n" Express as the connection to the stereo).
    (3)      When I have the wireless network drop-down menu selected on my MacBook, the skipping occurs immediately after the computer is "looking for networks" (as shown at the top of the menu).  The computer does this at random intervals on a regular basis.  The skipping, however, will occur even if the menu is not selected.
    (4)     Here's the weirdest part.  The skipping has even occured when playing iTunes from our newish iMac, with the older MacBook shut down, with the older Airport Express shut down.  In this case, the skipping only appears to occur when we have the wireless network drop-down menu selected and again, it occurs when the computer is "looking for networks" which occurs at random intervals.  In this situation, the skipping only seems to occur when the menu is selected.
At this point, if I can't find another solution, I'm going to return the Airport Extreme, and just give up playing music over our stereo speakers from the MacBook (and instead transfer music to the iMac and play from it).  But I thought I'd try a last-ditch effort to ask for help to see if anyone could figure out what might be causing the problem.  I would chalk it up to the problems of using my old "g" network MacBook on a newer "n" system (though I'm not about to spend $1K+ to upgrade my laptop just for this), but for (4) above, which seems to indicate something else is going on.
Any help would be most appreciated!

Unfortunately, your description of the problem and the placement of both your main and AirPort Express routers does lend itself to believe the problem is most likely Wi-Fi interference. If it isn't the microwave or portable phones, it could be obstacles like walls between the routers that may be preventing the stream from consistently reaching the Express.
In your configuration, the stream will first travel to the main router, and then, from the main router to the AirPort Express. If, for example, you started the stream in the same room as the Express, that stream would have to travel across several rooms at least twice.
