external hard drive compatible with macbook pro 10.5.8, i need a hard drive that will work with 10.5.8 to back everything up before upgrading to 10.6. a hard drive that is compatable with 10.5.8 has been impossible to find, a hard drive that works with both opperating systems is what i am looking for, any information that can help is appreciated

You can buy just about any USB2.0 hard drive and use it with your MacBook Pro.  Many older external drives come pre-partitioned and formatted FAT32 for use on Windows.  Your Mac can use that file system as well, but it has limitations on file sizes.  You can always re-partition your external drive and re-format it as HFS+ (MacOS Extended Journaled) then your old Mac OS version and your new one should both be able to access it just fine.  One thing to keep in mind is that many older OSes don't really handle drives larger than 2TB well, so you would probably want to try to keep your external drive to something smaller than 2TB...

  • External Hard Drive Compatible with Mac and Windows?

So my old laptop is a Dell Latitude and I bought a Western Digital external hard drive and put all my files/pics/music on it. The information the WD came with said its compatible with Mac and Windows, but when I plug it into my brand spankin new Macbook, it doesn't register with the computer and won't show up. What's going on?

I recently ran into that problem. In order to have the hard drive compatible for both PC and Mac it must be in a FAT32 format. In order to do this though all your files will be deleted (in order to reformat). You can do this by plugging in the hard drive into you mac and going under disk utility and there you will find your hard drive and under erase change the format to FAT32 and then you press erase (all will be deleted off the external drive though)

  • Are these Seagate 2TB drives compatible in my Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66 GHz?

I still have an Apple Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.66 that was introduced August 7, 2006. I currently have 4 of the following Seagate internal hard drives installed: ST3750640AS SEAGATE BARRACUDA 7200.10 - HARD DRIVE - 750 GB - INTERNAL - 3.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 RPM - BUFFER: 16 MB
I want to know if these hard drives will work in this computer: Seagate Barracuda XT ST32000641AS 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive. This computer is powered by two 2.66 GHz dual core Intel Xeon 5150 processors.
The old drives were purchased from NewEgg and I want to purchase the new ones from there also. Are these 2TB drives compatible in my computer?
    Thanks,
    Lou Hosta

    SATA is SATA.
Apple introduced GPT (GUID) years ago to support 2TB and larger (default partition scheme).
SATA III is also backward compatible with SATA II (otherwise, who would Seagate have to sell to?)
The only issues have been with green drives, using green version for RAID or for performance purposes.

Where can I find and download a print driver compatible with OS 10.7.5 on iMac for USB HP LaserJet P1006?
Ran software update. Apple notes that a driver is unavailable, consult HP (who seems to offer only info but no software download available).
Any troubleshooting info or hints are appreciated.

    Hi LPfromMA,
I'm sorry to hear you've run into difficulties finding the driver for your HP Laserjet P1006 for your Mac OS X 10.7.5.
I have included a document with the steps to download and install the driver for your printer and your Mac. It has a section for a USB connection.  I have also checked HP.com and there is driver for Mac OS X 10.7.

  • How to make the CD/DVD drive compatible on Satellite 5000-204

    Hi all,
I see a thread on replacing CD/DVD drive on this notebook, but it was closed, so i write this post.
The most of recent unit is "cable select" type and will not be recognized from many Toshiba notebook.
To solve that you must search a drive for which you can found a firmware update that change it to be "reverse cable select" type, as Nec or Optiarc
If you buy a drive that can't be recognize (like me) read below.
I succesfully replaced the DVD-ROM/CD-RW unit with a Pioneer DVR-KD08 DVD writer.
This unit is a "cable select" type (as most other recent unit) so it can't be recognise by this notebook (and many other Toshiba models). The solution is to connect pin 45 and 47 together on the drive or on the connector adapter (this second solution is simpler).
If you watch the drive from behind these pins are the second and third from the left on the upper row of pin of the connector.
In the connector adapter it's simpler to connect these pin (with care) with a solder iron directly on the circuit board.
Obviously on the circuit board the pins are the second and third from the right.
After this the unit will recognize ok.

    Hi buddy
First of all thank you for participation in the forum its always nice to have users who shares the own experience and knowledge.
Thanks you also for this info how to make the CD/DVD drive compatible.
But to be honest Im a little bit skeptical because there is a chance that the drive could be damage during this procedure.
So everyone could do this but only at the own risk!!!
Usually the compatible drives can be found in the user manual and it would be useful taking a look into the user manual before buying an NOT compatible drive ;)
    Cheers mate

  • External DVD drive compatible with Windows 8

I am looking to purchase an external DVD drive to use with the U430 laptop which is running Windows 8.  Which units does lenovo offer that can run in this OS?  Would the 0A33988 work; the specs only list Windows 7.  I don't think the DB60 will work in Windows 8.

  • Probook 470 windows 8.1 upgrade to windows 10, any driver compatible issue?

Probook 470 windows 8.1 upgrade to windows 10, any driver compatible issue?

    Hi,
First I assume there is a bluetooth module inside your computer.
If so please test to reinstall its driver. To get a driver for the device, you need to know the brand and model of your computer or your motherboard.
Generally computer manufacturers will provide all drivers for their computers on their website. Search with your computer model on manufacturer's website could help you get a proper driver. If failed, search your motherboard from its manufacturer instead
    will also help.
After that, uninstall your bluetooth module from Device Manager and install the driver you just downloaded, reboot to see the result.

  • 2000-era Zip disk == 2014-era external Zip drive compatible?

    Hello,
Way back in 2000 or so (when I used to do DTP & artworking), I installed one of these internal IDE Zip 100 drives on my non-USB, PCI-card-only Windows PC:
    Internal IDE ZIP 100 Drive
I have tons of zip disks with terrabytes of old work files on 'em.
Fast-forward to now. My old my non-USB, PCI-card-only Windows PC with the above IDE Zip drive is no more. I need to buy an external USB Zip drive for my G4 (running Tiger)  so that I can access all those old files stored on all my old circa 2000 Zip disks. My question, therefore, is: Does anybody know whether or not my 2000-era Zip disks are compatible with any of these more modern external USB Zip drives?
Iomega ZIP 100MB USB External Disk Drive
    IOMEGA ZIP 250 USB DRIVE
Thanks in advance for your help.
NB: I MUST buy a USB Zip drive so that I can use it on my new 2014-era Windows laptop

Here is the Straight Dope; right from the horses mouth:
Is the Zip® 250 drive compatible with my Zip® 100 disks?
    Document # 30008.html
The Iomega® Zip® 250 drive is fully read/write compatible with Zip 100 disks. Performance with a Zip 250 drive reading and writing to a Zip 100 disk may be slower than with a Zip 250 disk.
Note: You cannot use Zip 250 disks in a Zip 100 drive. If you place a 250 disk in a Zip 100 drive, the drive will immediately eject the disk.

  • Satellite M30: Are the SD-R6472 and SD-R6572 drives compatible?

    Hi,
are the SD-R6472 and SD-R6572 DVD-RW DRIVES compatible with the Toshiba Satellite M30?
    THX

    Hi
I dont have found any further information about the compatibility of this drives with the Satellite M30.
But if you want you can visit the Toshiba website:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/generic_content.jsp?service=EU&ID=ONLINE_SHOP
There you can find options and accessories for many Toshiba units.
    Check it.
Ps: You can also try to ask the Toshiba service in your country for the details.

  • Are HFS+ formatted drives compatible with VISTA?

Can't get my USB HD to work wireless via Airport Extreme Base Station 802.11n.
Apple manual says USB HD needs FAT32 format to work with VISTA. Found freeware to accomplish this-- http://www.ridgecrop.demon.co.uk/index.htm?fat32format.htm
and successfully formatted the 500GB HD to FAT32 in a single partition--
BUT, the setup still did NOT work correctly. I could now see the drive from within VISTA, but my test write/save to the USB HD wirelessly via AEX failed-- Microsoft Word froze. Test of Microsoft Word file COPIED from laptop's HD to USB HD via AEX appeared to work. But when COPIED file opened, Word program froze again.
Then today I read the following on Wikipedia: "On Windows, a fairly complete filesystem driver for HFS+ exists as a commercial software package called MacDrive. This package allows Windows users to read and write HFS+ formatted drives, and read Mac format optical disks. [9]
A free alternative to MacDrive is HFSExplorer [1] written by Erik Larsson. HFSExplorer is a useful application for viewing and extracting files from an HFS+ volume (Mac OS Extended) or an HFSX volume (Mac OS Extended, Case-sensitive) located either on a physical disk, on a .dmg disk image, or in a raw file system dump."
Wow, imagine my surprise, given that Apple says to format FAT32. If the Wikipedia info is correct, forget FAT32 and its limit of 4GB file size. HSF+ would be a much better format than FAT32 if it's truly compatible. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience on this issue? I really want to be able to backup wirelessly from VISTA and via my AEX, which I otherwise love! Thanks for any help on the issue.

I have been at it today as well
HFS is the better compatible format for VISTA. You can drag the files, but there is no way of having a software backit up for you. The drive will show up As Network Drive and i have been trying for the past 5 hours to figure out how to make it possible. After numerous attempts i gaave up.
So i came down to dragging and dropping the files i want to back up instead.
    Good luck

  • What is the "best" internal hard drive compatible with macbook pro 13.3" product number: MD101LL/A  that does not damage OS?

I'm looking for an upgrade in space ( 750gb - 1 TB) and performance on the hard drive, but I have read in many forums that many "compatible" hard drives may damage the OS. I plan on installing bootcampt with Windows 7 and the latest Mac OS. I'm wondering if anyone has updated their HD and if they've experienced any problems with it, or if anyone has any suggestions. Thank you for your advice in advance!

I'm wondering if anyone has had any particular experience with the Seagate 1TB solid state hybrid drive (found here: http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Solid-Hybrid-2-5-Inch-ST1000LM014/dp/B00B99JUBQ). It boasts SSD-like speeds at a fraction of the cost, and its right around my budget, but perhaps its too good to be true?
I have two of those Seagate SSHDs, using one as the internal drive in my primary MBP.  Boot and shutoff times are dramatically less than before (using 7200 rpm HGST HDDs).  In other respects, I have no complaints regarding the drive performance.  I can recommend them based on my limited experience (~3 months).  The $99 price does look very attractive.
Note that when you install a HDD of larger capacity in a MBP, it should be reflected in your backup strategy.  Do you have a backup drive to accommodate the additional data that you will be able to store on the new internal HDD?
    Ciao.

  • External hard drive compatible with mac

I recently purchased a Lacie external hd (the porsche design P´9220). Had some initial trouble with getting it up and running, had to switch primary partition hd to actually get the 1 TB storage amount. I did this on a pc in computer management, because I couldn´t figure out how to do this on my mac. Anyway, when I swiched the primary partition hard drive to the right one, I only had two options for formating, either NTFS or exFAT. I thought exFAT would work on mac, but turns out it doesn´t.. Is there any way I can format this hd to fat/ fat32 either on mac or pc?? The whole point of buying this hd was that I thought it would be compatible with BOTH mac and pc at the same time..
Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

    Nah:
    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two and size them to your preferences. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you created for Windows use, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the Format Type to MSDOS then click on the Erase button.

  • External hard drives compatible with time capsule generation 3

I am trying to connect a little 160Gb HP hard drive to my time capsule via a hub which also connects successfully a non wireless printer. This particular hard drive uses two usb in's to connect. Once i plug it into time capsule, it powers up, thinks for a while, the wee blue light becomes solid and there it is.
However it does not show up in the finder sidebar under Shared - though i have set preferences to show everything. the hard drive is formatted correctly, and i can access it when i plug it directly into the imac.
am i missing something ? or is it just not compatible with my time capsule ? - perhaps the two usb connections are the cause? i just want to be able to save files and access them on the external hard drive via the network from imac and laptop, instead of having to plug it in to either.....
    any help much appreciated...
    janemae

yep am using a  usb hub, time cap. has only the one usb port- yes two usb outs on the hard drive , sorry, which merge into one into the hd, is bus powered...
