X-Fi midi effects

I just bought an X-Fi and I've found that it doesn't seem to respond to cc91 and cc93 (reverb and chorus levels) like all my previous Sound Blaster cards have (these controllers have almost no effect). Setting reverb and chorus levels with the X-Fi involves calculating MSB abd LSB NRPN values and steeting them with cc99 and cc98 to select the effect and cc6 and cc38 to input values. This must be done for every channel and since I have several thousand Midi sequences, setting them all up this way would take all of my free time for months. Is there a way to get the X-Fi midi synths to respond properly to the normal cc91 and cc93 controllers for reverb and chorus? I use Sonar 4 and Nuendo 2.
Have I missed something in setting up the X-Fi, or is there a simple sysex message I could add to my sequences to make cc91 and cc93 work like they should?
I depend heavily on midi for my music production and this quirk makes the X-Fi all but useless as it stands now. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Good luck waiting for support from Creative. Still waiting here myself!
Not only are the Reverb and Chorus effects not so responsive on the XFi, there are several other controller messages that are low or non-responsive with this new card.
If anybody hears from Creative or finds a way to deal with these issues, please post it here!
I most surely will post it on this thread if I get things working!

hello there,  there is a rare window that keeps popping up every time i start Logic.  It's a "tempo" window with strange layout about midi effects and so,.... is it normal?  How can i improve this?  Thanks.

Hmm, that's some sort of MIDI Arpeggiator setup in your environment. Strange that you don't know it, this has to be custom-installed, it is not part of the standard setup.
You can do two things about it:
1.unlock your current screenset (shift-L), then close the (Bass Driver) window, then relock the screenset (shift-L). Next time you open up this project you won't see the Bass Driver, but it is still in the project.
    2. You can remove the whole page: open the Environment (cmd-8), then go to the dropdown menu arrow top left of the Environment window and select the Bass Driver layer. If it is selected, dropdown again and choose Delete. Now Save your project under a different name (Save As...), so that you still keep the Bass Driver setup in the original project. If you don't need to keep it, you can simply Save.

  • MIDI effects like at Ableton Live?

I'm trying to decide if to go for Ableton Live or Logic Pro (an update). What I have not found so far is something like Ableton's MIDI effects that offer far more than a simple appregiator. I specially would be looking for ways of introducing randomness to MIDI tracks. Also I wonder if it is possible to script songs so parts can be triggered by events and played in different combinations.
    Thanks!

yes, you can do the scripting in Live in what are called "scenes." Each part you record can be entered into scenes as a clip. Then you just automate what parts play and when or you can trigger them all live if you have a midi controller.

  • Possible fix for X-Fi MIDI effects

I think I may have found a solution (somewhat) for those of you who haven't been able to get much reverb or chorus on MIDI instruments. I believe part of the problem lies in the default SoundFont settings for "reverbEffectSend" and "chorusEffectSend". By default, a SoundFont bank only allows controllers 91 and 93 to access 20% of the total effect available. This may be half of what is causing the problem. You didn't notice this on earlier Sound Blaster cards is because the maximum reverb level in the EAX control panel was EXTREMELY wet (you can test this on Live!/Audigy by allowing the reverb to affect the WAVE output as well--the wave output will be more wet than you will be able to get your SoundFont files).
Unfortunately, I don't have an X-Fi to test this out on, so I will need some willing guinea pigs. If you aren't adept at editing your own SoundFonts, try downloading the latest version of GeneralUser GS (version 1.4) from my website athttp://www.sccmusic.250x.com/sfont/genuser. Version 1.4 is adjusted to allow 100% of the reverb and chorus effect instead of the default 20%. Try it and see if you can get some decent wetness.
Here is a nice, wet MIDI for you to try with it as well: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~coll0360/musi...march_in_d.mid
Now, for those comfortable working in Vienna 2.3 (must be at least version 1.31.0), try the following:
Find a SoundFont that will be your guinea pig (the simpler, the better). Expand the "Instrument Pool". Next, expand the first instrument you see. If the instrument has only one sample, right-click on it and select "Modulator Properties". If the instrument has more than one sample, create a "Global Zone" if one doesn't already exist, and then right-click on "Global Zone" and select "Modulator Properties"
Once in the modulator properties window, scroll down until you see:
    MIDI CC91 reverbEffectSend <None>
Click on that entry and you should see the value under "Amount" listed as "200". This is (I believe) only 20%. Change that value to "1000" and press Enter on your keyboard. The MIDI CC 91 entry should now show up in red. Repeat the same adjustment for:
    MIDI CC93 chorusEffectSend <None>
and close the modulator properties window.
Repeat this step for each instrument in the bank and you should be able to get a much nicer reverb and chorus effect with MIDI.
Please let me know how this works out

    Hey Chris.
I think this is part of the problem with the X-Fi cards.
I started playing different projects and found that certain soundfonts get good reverb and chorus. These fonts are ones I created myself and had set the reverb and chorus levels really high from the beggining. So your solution seems it will correct that part of the problem.
But I still have a problem with certain envelope controller sends which the X-Fi card isn't responding to at all. Particularly, certain projects I have which did a lot of envelope changes throughout the song using the VDW soundfont. Now they don't respond at all and just sound flat through the whole song, which sucks
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
P.S. It is going to be a real drag to have to set the reverb and chorus levels high on all my soundfonts!!!

  • Using Midi Reverb and chorus in the Mixer Window

When I have my 16 midi channels of my triton in open logic with midi data inside, and I turn the Reverb or Chorus button in the mixer window, there are no affects taking place. why?? Thanks

    Hi,
Does your Triton have the General MIDI effects onboard? If not, then that is why it is not working.
Your MIDI device must have the effects onboard. So please consult your Triton manual.

  • Midi fx export

    hi All -
Was excited about the new midi fx plug ins and scripting possibilities on X.
Was wondering does anyone know whether it's possible to record/ bounce or export the midi effected track as a new midi file with all the fx data written onto the track.
    thanks!
    Y

What I usually do is just enable automation Latch, select the objects in the enviro and then send data. You can only select so many paramaters at a time, for example 2000 events won't all transmit and record properly so you can't do it in 1 fell swoop but it goes pretty quick, you can then write it to the region (as opposed to automation data-or does this method not work for your purposes?
What may be happening is you're transmitting MIDI data and expecting it to work as autom.-I don't work this way so i don't know what to expect but maybe it's a difference between v4 and v5 (which is still used in 7) automation. You didn't exactly say which version you came from...

  • X-Fi Midi - No reverb effe

I recently purchased an X-Fi Extreme Gamer sound card. I use Guitar Pro 5 and PowerTab
midi sequencers to score songs. I immediately noticed that neither one of the sequencers
can coax reverb out of the X-Fi, and chorus is barely audible when maxxed out. Other brand
name sound cards work fine with these sequencer programs. I bought the X-Fi because I
wanted the best wavetable General Midi sounds around. X-Fi came through on that end, but midi music with no effects is rather stale. I know about maxxing out the reverb and chorus
in Vienna, but this is not a solution because the effects are not controllable by the
    sequencer.
I have seen a few other threads where others were having the same problems using different
sequencers, so I'm pretty sure the problem lies with the X-Fi card. Basically, I just want
to know if this issue will ever be solved (i.e. updated drivers, etc.) or am I stuck with
no midi effects? It appears that Creative is not very concerned about this issue, and
will not even acknowledge it even exists. With the large amount of previous threads on this issue being ignored by Creative, there's no way that they are unaware of the problem.
Creative, if this problem is never going to be addressed, please just let us music guys
know, so we don't waste any more time trying to rememdy the issue!
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Did you install the Creative Volume Panel, so you can switch to Audio Creation Mode GUI. In there you can do many things with midi like, 3DMIDI, ASIO, FX Return, ECT. Also, there's the sounfont bank manager. You can load sf2 files to enhance the midi patch sounds.
    I hope this somewhat helps

  • X-Fi Midi Synth Reverb and Chorus Controller Is

I bought an X-Fi a couple of weeks ago, and I soon realized that midi effects controllers cc9 and cc93 (reverb and chorus) didn't work with the X-Fi hardware synths. I called CL Technical support about this and this is the response I got:
"I have spoken with our testers who say that the CC9-Reverb and CC93-Chorus amounts are set in theSF2 file. That value is typically set to hit 20% at maximum CC data entry (27). To work aroundthis, you will need to use NRPNs to set the amount to a greater level, or edit the SF2 contentitself. Please let me know if this information hel
    ps.
No, it doesn't help, reverb and chorus effects in midi files are set with midi controllers #9 and #93, this is true of virtually every midi file available on the internet, including commercial midi files. CL's testers are wrong. SF2 files have embedded minimum amounts of reverb and chorus for certain patches, midi song files customize the amounts of reverb and chorus with controllers cc9 and cc93 to suit each particular song, and even change it during the song. Adding NRPN's involves editing the midi file by calculating the MSB and LSB for each desired value and adding four controllers for every channel of every song every time you want a change in the effects. Controller cc9 and cc93 have control sliders or knobs in every major audio/midi multitrack program and these require no editing. A midi synth that ignores this loses much of its realism, and this just isn't acceptable for those of us who make serious use of midi song files. I have several thousand midi files and it would take months or even years to edit them all. This is a bug that may only affect a small percentage of X-Fi users, but for those it affects, it's a major bug. From the response I received from tech support, it appears that they aren't planning to do anything about it, so I thought I would publicize the issue here and see if I can't change their minds. I drove a 20 mile round trip and paid $40 for my X-Fi and I've had to pull it out of my computer and put my Audigy back in. I'm not a happy camper at this point, but if CL is going to fix the issue, I'm willing to wait for a while because I think thye X-Fi is worth it.

Maxing everything was the first thing I tried, and no go. Still so little reverb it was hard to tell if it was working, and no detectable chorus. I even went back with Vienna 2.4 and checked my soundfont again, and all was as it should be.
Putting together a brand new sound card is a major undertaking and it's understandable if something gets missed here and there, especially as most of the designers and testers probably aren't serious musicians. It's easy to see how this one could slip past, especially if they were using Soundfonts that have reverb and chorus programmed in to some of the instruments. Everything works fine until you start varying cc9 and cc92 and nothing happens. I haven't checked because I removed the X-Fi and put my Audigy back in, but it's a good bet that none of the midi effect controllers work properly. This is a relati'vely minor issue for most users, but for serious musicians who use midi, it's major. However, I'm sure CL will fix the problem as soon as possible. I just hope it doesn't take too long because the X-Fi is a really, really good sounding card, except for this one problem.
Gi've the X-Fi another try. I had these same issues at first but now cc9 and cc92 work in Sonar4.
These controls work, its just that the reverb is very low and the chorus has to be activated. In the effect editor choose the amphitheater preset as oppose to the default for reverb as it is the most audible.
    follow these steps:
    . choose creation mode
    2. enable EAX effects and set to max
    3. select amphitheater preset for reverb
    4. activate the 5 bus buttons for chorus in master aux effects box (Front L\R, ect)
step 4 should work best for stereo setup
    This should do it.

  • Hi, I need help. On my channel strips, I don't have a Midi FX tab. What do I do? I have Logic Pro X.

    Can anyone help please?

In case you don't know, MIDI effects can only be put on a software instrument channel, so if you are expecting it to be on the main track of, say, a drummer producer kit it won't be there because that is an aux track.  Right click somewhere on an instrument channel strip in the inspector or mixer and find the "channel strip components" sub menu - you'll see the MIDI effects with or without a checkmark next to it.  The mixer and inspector can be set up independantly - which I didn't know until just now.

  • Audio/MIDI Interface to replace a Tascam US-122L?

    Hi guys,
I bought a Tascam US-122L off ebay last week to replace an Asio Alesis iO2, with the intention of using it for recording, multi-tracking and most importantly gigging (MIDI keyboard thru Mainstage) at a festival next week.
I had the usual problems that people have with the US-122L on OSX Lion, and have managed to get it working for audio but not MIDI, effectively rendering it useless for the biggest thing I need it for.
As a result, I have decided I need to find another interface as I really don't have time to spend all next week trying all the different fixes that may or may not work.
So, can anyone recommend an interface which:
    - is fully compatible with OSX Lion, and Logic and Mainstage 2.
    - has both audio & MIDI capability-for example the M-Audio Fast Track doesn't have a MIDI port, so it would be of no use to me.
    - is USB powered, not mains
    - is of decent quality for audio
    - is portable- not much bigger than the tascam at the most, preferably smaller
I need to be able to pick one up second hand (online) for preferably less than £80, if possible. I'll be using it on a late-2011 MacBook Pro and have a powered USB hub.
    Thanks,
    Alex

  • "Midi Events" Environment, floating window. How to repeat in next project?

This is proving a slightly bizarre, lovely but rather annoying issue.
I have searched high and low on the web today for an answer, I cannot find it. allow me to explain, I've just upgraded to Logic Pro 9, and after enjoying the Thievery Corporation demo I set to work on scoring a video doc of mine, as really I'm an ex musician who now works ostensibly in Final Cut, on my Mac Pro.
Anyway my first Logic project is going well, lots of plugin purchased, first 5mins complete, now here's the thing, when I open my first project a floating window also appears with it, and it is listed separately from arrangement on the window tab, in this case arrangement is called "imtro" and the floating window is called "imtro:Tempo". It opens and closes with the project, if I hit the top corner of the floating window to close it goes and closes, and cannot be re opened unless I close the project.
I thougt it was a new feature in Logic 9, as it operates as a lovely appregiator inside of Logic. It had 4 boxes (orange) Midi Effects (On/Off), Arp Starts (immediately/on first 1/1, 1/2, 1/4 etc) then a 1/16 appregiator, and 1/8 appregiator button, both with all the varaitions you could imagine, and finally a Delay button. And put simply when I select any track in the arrange window, and swith to Midi Effects to On, it plays wonderfully appreg..., in record it creates all the notes in the piano scroll and event list as I'm playing.
Trouble, once dismissed, I cannot recall it without closing the project, reopening the project.
Worse yet on starting new project for the next piece of music in video doc' I've discovered, it's not a feature I can find anywhere, what's going on?
Back in the original project if I pull the window by the right corner there's a whole bunch of boxes, and it turns out this is an Environment. The trouble is in any other project I open the Environment window from the window tab, and Midi Effects environment is nowhere to found. So I learnt how to import environments from my first project into this project, but cannot seem to get the environment to float over the project where clicking on track in the Arrange window allows the Midi Event float to effect the track I'm playing, yes you can reassign the header of the track to it but it doesn't work as well.
Now have I just stumbled on a new feature, I heartily recommend for Logic 10, or am I missing something? Or is this some kind of glitch or corruption, which just appears to be a good one? I certainly can't read about anywhere, and I can't repeat it by just calling it up in the project? What am I missing? I wonder if Tempo being in it's name is significant, as a floating window, when imorted in Midi effects it appears as the "project name:Enviroment: rather than "project name:Tempo".
    Anyone?

The layers in the env. are accessed by the drop down menu at the upper left of the env. window. It has a text field and a downward facing triangle. You may need to go into the view menu, and enable the inspector - it's at the top of that. You can also just hit "I" (as in the letter 'eye').
When you are importing, you should select the 'total replace' option. There are connections that are not made if you just import that layer.
Edit: I should add that 'total' replace will get rid of any instruments you already have, so use it with caution. If you have a bunch of work done, investigate merging.

  • Can't Drag/Copy/Paste Plugins In Mixer??

for some reason when i'm in the mixer and i try to command or option command grab an audio effect, it won't work. same goes for midi effects. however, it DOES work if i try to copy an es2 onto a different channel???? is there anywhere i can change the key command for this or something so i can see if that changes things?
has this happened to anyone else?
it won't even let me drag the audio effects to change the signal flow within the same channel, yet i can drag the software instrument wherever i want.
i even went back to check in logic 9 to see if it would work there and it does just fine.
this is a really bizarre bug and i'm wondering if i have something unchecked somewhere but i don't think i do.

    works perfectly fine here.
But as I said on gearslutz. You have to click right in the middle of the plugin button.
When it switches to the silly power/mixer/arrow view, you have to click on the mixer to drag.

  • Image Fade Out/Load new Image/Fade In

I think I am having an event timing issue. My desire is to
change the "header" image on each selection of a tabNavigator. I
can swap the image without issue through a img.load process. I
placed the image on a canvas and set the "showEffect" and
"hideEffect" on the canvasto fadeIn and fadeOut. (I actually have 2
images on the canvas) On the tabNavigator "change" event I call my
getImage() function and set canvs.visible=false, I have the tab
index for img.load=headerPic[idx] and then I set
canvs.visible=true; The result is that I do not get the first
visible change, I think. Tab 1 is initialized to visible in
ionComplete, clicking on tab 1 has no effect since it is selected
already. When tab 2 is selected the image changes to the new image
immediately and then fadesOut. Tab 3 then will fadeIn. Also
regardless of the tab selected, if I select another tab the ongoing
fade effect will continue on the newly selected tab. It seems the
load method doesn't care about effects - so I don't know how to
    sequence these effects.
    Thanks in advance.

You can use the completeEffect on Image to have an effect
    every time an
image loads, such as you can see used here
    http://examples.adobe.com/flex2/inproduct/sdk/photoviewer/PhotoViewer.html,
but I don't think there's a corresponding effect that you can
    apply to the
    old image before the change.
I think you're going to need to use ActionScript to get the
    control over the
effects that you want, so you can call either the end() or
    the reverse()
method on the effect when the graphic needs to change in
    mid-effect.

Yes, I can see what you're saying, and no, it makes more sense this way. Example: an audio-only project. See what happens when an instrument track is added.
And the "it's global" argument is not valid imho. It's a contextual menu. That context is: wherever the mousepointer is when rightclicking.
